Rashid Naseem sets two more Guinness World Records

Pakistan’s Rashid Naseem and his daughter Fatima Naseem have added three more records to their tally on Guinness World Records Day.

20 November is marked as Guinness World Records Day, an annual celebration of record-breaking. It is a day when people around the world attempt to break and set new world records.

Rashid Naseem holds the highest number of world records for Pakistan, while Fatima Naseem leads the country in the female category.

Fatima set a new record by holding eggs in both hands and bursting balloons. She was tasked with bursting 70 balloons in 30 seconds, which she surpassed, popping 76 without breaking any eggs.

Rashid Naseem achieved a record by breaking 42 marble tiles with a shin against the target of 35. His second record involved bursting two balloons simultaneously using dual nunchaku.

For the unversed, Guinness World Records also highlighted their achievements on its official page as part of the 70th anniversary celebrations, releasing a special message and a performance video that has crossed 100,000 views.

Rashid Naseem has previously showcased his skills in Italy, Germany, Spain, Korea, China, Singapore, and Romania.

He remains the only Pakistani consistently representing the country internationally without government support.

All-round Raza stars in Zimbabwe’s big win over Sri Lanka

RAWALPINDI: Sikandar Raza’s all-round show powered Zimbabwe to a commanding victory over Sri Lanka in the second match of the T20I tri-series here at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing 163, Sri Lanka’s batting line faltered and were bowled for only 95 on the last ball of the final over.

Zimbabwe bowlers inflicted a miserable start on them as the Irelanders were 25-3 in 6.1 overs.

Nissanka’s horror run on the Pakistan tour continued as he could not open his account, while Kusal Perera (4) followed him after in the second over. It was cheery on top for Chevrons as Kusal Mendis was run out after scoring six.

Zimbabwe continued with impressive bowling and did not allow any of the batters to settle, except skipper Dasun Shanaka, who remained the top-scorer.

Shanaka made 34 from 25 with the aid of two sixes and two fours.

For Zimbabwe, Brad Evans starred with the ball and picked up three wickets. Richard Ngarava also chipped in with two, whereas Sikandar Raza, Ryan Burl, and Graeme Cremer scalped one apiece.

Earlier, Brian Bennett’s 49 from 42 and Sikandar Raza’s brisk 47 off 32 helped Zimbabwe post a respectable total.

Put into bat first, Zimbabwe managed to score 162-8 at the end of their 20 overs.

Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani added 26 for the opening wicket in 3.1 overs before the latter was caught and bowled for 10 off Maheesh Theekshana’s bowling.

Brendan Taylor was the second to go after managing just 11 from nine, bowled by Eshan Malinga to leave Chevrons 40-2 in 5.3 overs.

With two wickets down in the power play, skipper Sikandar Raza arrived at the crease and stitched a 61-run partnership with Bennett. The pair took the score over the 100-run mark in 12 overs before Wanindu Hasaranga broke the threatening stand.

Bennet hit five fours and a six in his knock. Zimbabwe were eyeing a big total with wickets in hand; however, the Islanders made a strong comeback with quick wickets in the last phase of the innings.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga remained the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to his name. Eshan Malinga also supported him well with two scalps.

Steve Smith fires cheeky ‘Mastermind’ dig at Panesar

Australia’s stand-in skipper Steve Smith has taken a sharp dig at former England spinner Monty Panesar over his recent remarks relating to the Sandpapergate scandal.

Smith will be leading his side in the first Ashes Test after regular captain Pat Cummins was ruled out due to an injury.

The first Ashes Test between England and Australia will start tomorrow at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Panesar, earlier this month, had advised the England team and the UK media to target Smity by revisiting the ‘Sandpaper Gate’ scandal — when Australia were caught tampering with the ball using some sandpaper under Steve Smith’s leadership.

“If it were the opposite, the Australian media would be all over it,” Panesar said. “They would have said, if it was any of the English players, ‘the cheaters have arrived.’ Right?”

Smith has now responded, recalling Panesar’s viral appearance on a quiz show ‘Celebrity Mastermind, during which the ex-spinner famously fumbled simple general-knowledge questions.

“Who in the room has seen Mastermind, and Monty Panesar on that? Any of you?” Smith asked reporters in a pre-Ashes presser.

“Those of you that have will understand where I’m coming from. If you haven’t, do yourself a favour because it is pretty comical. Anyone that believes that Athens is in Germany, that’s a start, or that Oliver Twist is a season of the year and America is a city,” he said in a light-hearted manner.

Smith stressed that Panesar’s remarks did not affect him, stating that he is feeling far more relaxed these days.

“It doesn’t really bother me, those comments. That’s as far as I’ll go with that one,” he said, subsequently adding that he was “pretty chilled” on his return to the captaincy. “I’m a lot more relaxed these days,” Smith concluded.

PCB responds to rumours about final names of new PSL teams

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has responded to swirling rumours suggesting that Gilgit and Faisalabad have been finalised as the two new teams for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11.

Social media was abuzz on Wednesday with claims citing unnamed sources that the two cities had been officially selected.

However, the PCB strongly refuted these reports through a statement issued on Thursday. They clarified that the final decision on team names rests with the successful bidders.

“The PCB refutes news circulating in the media regarding the finalisation of the two city names for the new HBL PSL franchises,” the board said.

“The PCB would like to clarify that, as per the process, the successful bidders will have the right to choose a team name.”

Earlier this month, the PCB had shortlisted six cities for consideration: Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, Faisalabad, Gilgit, and Rawalpindi.

The cricket board reiterated that successful bidders will have the option to select their team from these six cities.

“The PCB is pleased to note and welcomes the growing interest in the acquisition of team franchise rights for two new teams for future editions of the HBL PSL,” the statement added.

The public advertisement inviting bids for the new franchises was published on November 15, 2025. The deadline for submitting technical proposals is December 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.

The PCB also stressed that information from any other source should not be considered official.

Shubman Gill ruled out of second Test against South Africa: report

GUWAHATI: India Test captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, scheduled to begin here on November 21, ESPNcricinfo reported on Thursday.

Gill, who suffered a neck injury on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata, has failed to recover sufficiently ahead of the Guwahati Test.

The 26-year-old retired hurt on four and did not return to complete his innings, nor did he take the field for the remainder of the match.

India ultimately lost the first Test by 30 runs, after being dismissed for 93 while chasing 124 on a pitch with uneven bounce.

He had previously missed a Test against New Zealand in October 2024 due to a neck spasm, too.

With Shubman Gill sidelined, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will assume the captaincy for the Guwahati Test.

According to ESPNcricinfo, medical advice suggests that playing too soon carries a high risk of recurrence for Gill, prompting doctors to recommend additional rest.

Gill’s absence also casts uncertainty over his inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against South Africa starting on November 30, with selections expected to be announced on November 23.

India now face a selection dilemma, with Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Nitish Kumar Reddy emerging as potential replacements for the injured captain.

Australia’s Jake Weatherald, Brendan Doggett to debut in first Ashes Test

Australia will field two debutants in an Ashes Test for the first time in nearly six years, with top-order batter Jake Weatherald and right-arm pacer Brendan Doggett set to receive their Baggy Green caps in the opening Test against England at Perth Stadium on November 21.

Stand-in captain Steve Smith, leading the side with Pat Cummins sidelined through injury, confirmed the selections and described the moment as “really exciting”, backing both players to make an immediate impact in one of cricket’s fiercest contests.

The last time Australia handed out two Test debuts in the same match was back in early 2019, when Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson were blooded at the Gabba.

Weatherald’s call-up brings a significant shift at the top of the order. With David Warner retired and Australia still searching for long-term stability, the 31-year-old becomes Usman Khawaja’s sixth opening partner in less than two years.

His inclusion also allows Marnus Labuschagne to return to his preferred No. 3 slot, an important reshuffle considering Labuschagne’s resurgence this domestic season, where he struck five centuries in eight innings for Queensland after being dropped mid-year.

Cameron Green retains the all-rounder’s role, edging out Beau Webster, and will slot in at No. 6 behind a core middle order of Smith and Travis Head.

Smith praised Weatherald’s temperament, revealing he had deliberately watched him train in challenging conditions.

“The nets were quick, bouncy, a lot of seam,” Smith said. “He just kept wanting more. He’s got courage, he’s worked hard, and I think he’ll complement Uzzie really well.”

Doggett, meanwhile, steps in after Josh Hazlewood was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

With Cummins also unavailable as he builds back to full fitness, Australia will lean on Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Doggett to drive the pace attack.

Smith believes Doggett, long considered on the fringes after several tours without a debut, has earned his moment.

“Injuries happen, particularly with quicks,” Smith said. “But it opens doors. Brendan has improved massively over the last few years; he’s skilful, and I’m excited to see him go about his business.”

England, who drew the 2023 Ashes 2-2 at home but haven’t won a Test series in Australia since 2010–11, have named a 12-man squad and will finalise their playing XI at the toss.

Australia’s XI for the first Test: Jake Weatherald, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (capt), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett.

Hakimi becomes first defender in 52 years to win African Footballer of the Year

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi won the African Men’s African Footballer of the Year award on Wednesday, capping a season in which he lifted the UEFA Champions League with his club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The 27-year-old also won a fourth Ligue 1 title last season and claimed the French Cup and UEFA Super Cup; however PSG came up short in the final of the Club World Cup as Hakimi was forced to settle for a runners-up medal in New York.

The right-back beat out two past winners in Liverpool’s Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen to claim the prize for the first time in his career.

Notably, he became the first defender in 52 years to win the African Footballer of the Year title.

“It’s really an honour for me to be here today and I’m proud to win such a prestigious trophy,” Hakimi said, before thanking his family, teammates and Morocco coach Walid Regragui.

“This trophy, it’s not just for me, it’s for all the strong men and women that have dreams in Africa and those that dream of becoming footballers.”

Hakimi is currently nursing a severely sprained ankle, but if fit, will lead hosts Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations from December 21 as they seek to win the competition for the first time since 1976.

Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the prize for the best women’s player on the continent, beating out fellow countrywoman Sanaa Mssoudy and Nigerian Rasheedat Ajibade.

The Al Hilal attacker was the leading scorer in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations this year, although her side went down to Nigeria in the decider.

It was a bumper day for the ceremony’s host country, Morocco, as Yassine Bounou scooped up the best men’s goalkeeper award and the Moroccan under-20 World Cup-winning side was voted best men’s national team.

Watford 20-year-old Othmane Maamma of Morocco claimed best young men’s player, while compatriot Doha El Madani retained the title of best young women’s player.

Cape Verde boss Bubista was awarded men’s coach of the year after leading the nation with a population of 525,000 to a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Nigerian shotstopper Chiamaka Nnadozie won her third consecutive women’s goalkeeper of the year award.

The 38-year-old batter removed his helmet, raised both hands in the air and dropped to the ground in celebration.

His knock placed him among an exclusive group of players to have marked the 100-Test milestone with a hundred.

The others are Colin Cowdrey (104 runs), Javed Miandad (145), Gordon Greenidge (149), Alec Stewart (105), Inzamam-ul-Haq (184), Ricky Ponting (120 & 143 not out), Graeme Smith (131), Hashim Amla (134), Joe Root (218) and David Warner (200).

He eventually fell to left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys for 106, edging to second slip where Andy Balbirnie completed a sharp catch.

The Ireland team offered warm applause as Mushfiqur left the field to loud cheers from the home crowd at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Mushfiqur faced 214 balls and struck five fours during his milestone innings, which helped ease the early pressure after Bangladesh slipped to 95-3 on the opening day.

Bangladesh won the first Test by an innings and 47 runs.
