MIRPUR: Bangladesh’s wicket-keeper batter Mushfiqur Rahim joined an elite club on Thursday by scoring a century in his 100th Test, achieving the feat during the ongoing second match of the home series against Ireland.

Resuming on 99 overnight, Mushfiqur reached his hundred with a single in the second over of the morning session on day two of the second Test.

The 38-year-old batter removed his helmet, raised both hands in the air and dropped to the ground in celebration.

His knock placed him among an exclusive group of players to have marked the 100-Test milestone with a hundred.

The others are Colin Cowdrey (104 runs), Javed Miandad (145), Gordon Greenidge (149), Alec Stewart (105), Inzamam-ul-Haq (184), Ricky Ponting (120 & 143 not out), Graeme Smith (131), Hashim Amla (134), Joe Root (218) and David Warner (200).

It was the 13th Test ton for Mushfiqur Rahim, who is now level with Mominul Haque for the highest number of centuries in Test cricket for Bangladesh.

He eventually fell to left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys for 106, edging to second slip where Andy Balbirnie completed a sharp catch.

The Ireland team offered warm applause as Mushfiqur left the field to loud cheers from the home crowd at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Mushfiqur faced 214 balls and struck five fours during his milestone innings, which helped ease the early pressure after Bangladesh slipped to 95-3 on the opening day.

Bangladesh won the first Test by an innings and 47 runs.

Mushfiqur Rahim set for landmark 100th Test against Ireland

DHAKA: Bangladesh stalwart Mushfiqur Rahim is set to etch his name into the history books as he approaches a remarkable milestone— becoming the first player from his nation to play 100 Test matches.

Mushfiqur is expected to reach the landmark in the second Test against Ireland, scheduled to begin on November 19 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. The first Test of the two-match series will be held in Sylhet from November 11.

This comes after Cricket Ireland agreed to play two Tests. Earlier, Ireland had preferred to play a One-Day International (ODI) series instead of a second Test.

Currently on 98 Tests, Mushfiqur Rahim made his debut as an 18-year-old in 2005 at Lord’s – the home of cricket.

The wicket-keeper batter holds several records for Bangladesh, including the most runs in Tests (6328) and the highest individual score (219) against Zimbabwe.

Overall, the batter has represented Bangladesh in 98 Tests, 274 ODIs, and 102 T20Is.

The Ireland series will also mark the start of an action-packed home season for the Tigers.

Bangladesh’s 2025–26 home season will also feature a full series against Pakistan, comprising two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is in March–April.

Bangladesh dominate as Shanto, Mushfiqur hit tons against Sri Lanka

A record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership between captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim put Bangladesh in control at 292-3 on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

After a wobbly start at Galle, the pair stitched together 247 runs –the highest fourth-wicket stand for Bangladesh in Tests against Sri Lanka– steering the tourists to a commanding position at stumps.

Having elected to bat first, Bangladesh were reeling at 45-3 when the duo came together.

What followed was a gritty rescue act – a partnership built on sound temperament, clever shot selection, and an unflinching resolve as they dug their team out of early trouble.

Mushfiqur, the most capped Test player in Bangladesh history with 97 appearances, silenced his critics with a timely ton.

The veteran, under the pump after a lean patch spanning 13 innings without a half-century, rolled back the years with a knock of poise and purpose.

Bangladesh stalwart has fond memories of Galle, having struck a monumental double hundred there in 2013, and once again turned tormentor-in-chief for the Sri Lankan bowlers.

He did enjoy a slice of luck –a tough chance spilt by debutant Tharindu Rathnayake on 25- but made it count, navigating a nervy passage in the 90s, before scampering a quick single to notch up his 12th Test hundred.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, positive from the outset, kept the scoreboard ticking with deft footwork and a keen eye for the loose ball.

He brought up his sixth Test century–– and second against Sri Lanka–– with a cheeky paddle sweep off Prabath Jayasuriya, marking his first ton since November 2023.

Sri Lanka made early inroads with right-arm quick Asitha Fernando drawing first blood, removing opener Anamul Haque for a duck.

Off-spinner Rathnayake, handed his Test cap on the back of a prolific domestic season, struck twice in quick succession.

But once the Shanto-Mushfiqur duo got their eye in, it was one-way traffic.

Sri Lanka also handed a debut to opening batter Lahiru Udara, another domestic heavyweight, while the hosts paused before the start of play to congratulate retiring stalwart Angelo Mathews.

Angelo Mathews receives a guard of honour in his final Test, Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, 1st Test, Galle, first day, June 17, 2025

The 38-year-old Mathews, playing his 119th and final Test, will hang up his boots with over 8,000 runs, behind only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in Sri Lanka’s all-time charts.

He acknowledged the challenges he faced in recent weeks and indicated that he has come to accept this decision as part of his destiny.

Mushfiqur also thanked his family, friends, and fans for their unwavering support over his 19-year career.

“Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years,” he concluded.

Mushfiqur Rahim mocks Angelo Mathews with timed-out celebration

CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim on Monday, mocked Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews by mimicking his famous timed-out dismissal, which occurred at the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.

The incident took place when the hosts Bangladesh were celebrating their 2-1 ODI series victory over arch-rivals Sri Lanka.

As the Bangladesh squad gathered to pose with the trophy, Rahim walked out with a helmet.

Mushfiqur Rahim was enacting as if there was something wrong with the helmet to mock Angelo Mathews for his famous timed-out dismissal during the ODI World Cup 2023.

Remember, the Sri Lankan team celebrated their T20I series victory over Bangladesh by simultaneously pointing and tapping on the watch in a bid to take a dig at the Tigers.

It is worth mentioning here that Angelo Mathews became the first player to suffer a timed-out dismissal in the history of international cricket.

Mathews came down to bat in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings after the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s wicket.

The former captain took more than two minutes to take strike after having issues with his helmet due to a broken strap. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a “timed out” dismissal, which was upheld by the on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth.

The ICC World Cup 2023 playing conditions pertaining to “timed out” dismissals reads thus:

40.1.1 After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.

Mushfiqur guides Bangladesh home in Ireland Test

MIRPUR: Mushfiqur Rahim shrugged off Bangladesh’s mid-innings jitters to hit a quickfire half-century Friday and seal a seven-wicket victory over Ireland in their one-off Dhaka Test.

Ireland were bowled out for a second innings of 292 soon after resuming on the fourth day, and Mushfiqur top-scored for the hosts with seven fours among his 51 runs.

“We had no particular ambition to dominate before the start of the game. We wanted to win it and we did it. I am happy with that,” said Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

“We never feared a defeat. In Tests you get time to bounce back… so none of us thought we could lose this game.”

Opener Tamim Iqbal made 31 and put on 62 runs with Mushfiqur for the third wicket. after Ireland saw a glimmer of hope with two crucial early wickets.

Liton Das gave Bangladesh a positive start but poor fortune saw him bowled for 23 as a Mark Adair bouncer struck him off the helmet and fell onto his stumps, dislodging the bails.

Three overs later, Najmul Hossain was caught by Andy Balbirnie at slip off Andy McBrine after making just four runs.

Najmul was initially declared not out by the on-field umpires but replays confirmed a fair catch to leave Ireland jubilant and Bangladesh reduced to 43-2.

But Mushfiqur and Tamim denied the visitors further success, taking Bangladesh to 89-2 by lunch.

Ben White dismissed Tamim after the break but Mominul Haque remained on 20 alongside Mushfiqur to take Bangladesh home.

Bangladesh also had pacer Ebadot Hossain to thank when his two wickets wrapped up Ireland’s innings at 292 runs.

The tourists added just six runs to their overnight 286-8 after Ebadot forced last man Graham Hume to give a catch behind the stumps for 14.

McBrine added just one run to his overnight 71 to give Ebadot a finish of 3-37.

– ‘Bit of a fright’ –

The visitors were staring down the barrel of an innings defeat on Thursday before debutant Lorcan Tucker became Ireland’s second Test centurion with 108.

Kevin O’Brien is the only other Irishman to have hit a Test century, scoring 118 against Pakistan during their maiden Test in 2018.

Harry Tector added 56 to lift Ireland from a precarious 13-4 and surmount a 155-run first-innings deficit.

“It was certainly backs-to-the-wall stuff on day two and a lot of people probably wrote us off yesterday but our day was as good a Test day as Ireland has had,” said captain Balbirnie.

“Having been 13 for four and to get a lead and hopefully give them a bit of a fright was good.”

The visitors were all out for 214 runs in their first innings and Bangladesh posted 369 runs in response.

Mushfiqur put the hosts in the box seat on the second day with his first-innings knock of 126.

This week’s Test extends Ireland’s losing streak in the five-day format. They have now lost all four Tests they have played since becoming a full member of the International Cricket Council in 2017.

reland next head to Sri Lanka, where they will play two Tests in Galle, the first match beginning on April 16.
