Veteran Pakistan spinner hints at retirement from cricket

Veteran Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah has suggested that his cricket career may be nearing its conclusion.

He indicated that he is considering retirement following discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

In an exclusive conversation with ARY News, the 39-year-old confirmed that he has opted out of domestic cricket this season, signalling that a formal decision on his future could be imminent.

“I am not playing domestic cricket this year. God willing, I will finalise my decision after meeting with the PCB,” Yasir stated.

One of Pakistan’s most successful Test bowlers of the modern era, Yasir represented the country in 48 Tests, claiming 244 wickets at an average of 31.38.

His dominance in UAE conditions, where Pakistan played their home Tests for nearly a decade, was particularly remarkable, as he bagged 116 wickets there at an impressive average of 24.56.

Yasir Shah also holds the illustrious record of being the fastest bowler to reach 200 Test wickets, a mark he achieved in just 33 matches.

Reflecting on the current national side, the seasoned spinner expressed satisfaction with the team’s recent performances.

“The Pakistan team is doing well. They have won their last two T20 matches. Our prayers are always with them,” he said.

When asked about Mohammad Rizwan’s recent removal from the ODI captaincy and earlier exclusion from the T20 squad, Yasir responded with composure and empathy, drawing parallels to his own experiences of being dropped despite consistent performances.

“Our effort as players is always to perform for Pakistan. Rizwan is doing that as well. Whichever player the selectors choose as captain, the entire team supports him,” he remarked.

The veteran also addressed his own absence from the national setup, suggesting that his exclusion was not performance-related.

“Sometimes these things happen. My performances were good. Earlier, I had a knee injury, and they assumed it had returned. I told them that if fitness was the issue, they should conduct a fitness test. But no such reason was officially given,” Yasir Shah explained.

While his Test legacy remains undisputed, Yasir’s white-ball record was modest. He featured in 25 ODIs, taking 24 wickets at an average of 47.91, including one five-wicket haul, and appeared in two T20Is without success.

Two Pakistan players join Delhi Bulls for Abu Dhabi T10 League 2025

The Delhi Bulls have bolstered their lineup with the addition of two Pakistani cricketers, including all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed, ahead of the ninth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, set to take place from November 18 to 30.

The franchise confirmed the signings of Iftikhar and young pacer Ubaid Shah through its official social media channels.

For 19-year-old Ubaid Shah, this will be his first taste of international franchise cricket.

The right-arm quick, younger brother of Naseem Shah, impressed during his Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 campaign for Multan Sultans, where he claimed 12 wickets in 11 matches.

Iftikhar Ahmed has played 66 international T20 matches for Pakistan, scoring nearly 1,000 runs at a strike rate of 129.10.

The hard-hitting middle-order batter has become a reliable presence in short-format leagues worldwide. His experience spans the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Earlier, the Delhi Bulls had strengthened their pace department with the signings of Salman Irshad and Mir Hamza during the player draft held on October 19.

Elsewhere, the draft also saw Pakistani players making their mark across franchises.

Deccan Gladiators picked up spinner Usman Tariq, who recently starred in the CPL 2025 with 20 wickets in 10 games, and young pacer Ali Raza.

Meanwhile, Zaman Khan, Asif Ali, and Akif Javed will represent Ajman Titans, adding more Pakistani flavour to this year’s T10 spectacle.

Australia announce squad for first Ashes Test squad

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia (CA) announced a 15-member squad for the first Test of the Ashes against England, which is scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Chief selector George Bailey hailed “impressive” uncapped opener Jake Weatherald as having all the right attributes after he was named in the squad.

In-form batter Marnus Labuschagne was recalled, but young opener Sam Konstas was dropped from the squad that will be captained by Steve Smith in the injury-enforced absence of Pat Cummins.

Should the 31-year-old pad up against Ben Stokes’s England, he will be the sixth opening partner for Usman Khawaja since David Warner retired early last year.

Previous experiments with Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head, Labuschagne and Konstas did not pan out. But Bailey would not say if Weatherald would definitely make his debut in Perth on November 21.

“No, not confirmed in the XI,” Bailey said. “Obviously, we’ve got 14 of our 15-man squad playing round four (of the Sheffield Shield).”

“Still some information to gather out of that. Cameron Green, being one, returning to the bowling crease, that’d be good.”

All-rounder Green has been playing as a batsman only since his return mid-year following back surgery 13 months ago. He has bowled just a handful of overs this season.

Should be able to demonstrate he can handle a sufficient workload to support the pace attack, Green will likely drop to bat at six with Weatherald opening.

In that scenario, Labuschagne, who is back after being dropped for the last Test series against the West Indies, would come in at his preferred number three, having blasted five centuries in eight innings this season.

If Green is still struggling, then Labuschagne would potentially open alongside Khawaja with Green at three and Beau Webster retaining his spot at six.

Tasmanian left-hander Weatherald has been a top-performing opener in domestic ranks over the past few years.

He put himself on the Ashes radar by clobbering 183 for Australia A during a red-ball series against Sri Lanka A in Darwin this year, with his form continuing in the Sheffield Shield.

“I think if you look at his performance over 18 to 24 months, it’s been really solid, and then there’s a method there that I think we like and is complementary to those other players around him in the squad,” Bailey said.

“He scores at a good rate. The way he goes about building his innings, it’s been impressive.”

His inclusion meant disappointment for Matt Renshaw, who had been tipped to get the nod as Konstas has struggled for form.

Smith takes charge because Cummins, who will travel with the squad to Perth, has not played since picking up a lower back injury against the West Indies more than three months ago.

The day-night second Test in Brisbane from December 4 is a tentative target for Cummins to return.

The ever-reliable Scott Boland will replace Cummins in the seam attack alongside quick bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon provides the spin option in his 140th Test, where he can surpass Glenn McGrath to become the sixth-highest wicket-taker in history by claiming two more victims.

Uncapped Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott were included as the back-up fast bowlers, and Josh Inglis will provide cover for wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Following Perth, the five-Test series moves to Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

England drew 2-2 on home turf in the most recent Ashes series in 2023, but have not won in Australia since 2010-2011.

Shaheen Afridi reflects on Pakistan’s victory against South Africa

FAISALABAD: Pakistan skipper Shaheen Afridi hailed batters for propelling his side to victory over South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series here at Iqbal Stadium on Tuesday.

Set 264, Pakistan hit the winning runs on the loss of eight wickets with two balls to spare. For the home side, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha starred with the bat, both scoring gutsy half-centuries.

Rizwan top-scored with 55 from 74 balls with the help of six fours, while Salman Ali Agha hit five boundaries and a six on his way to 62 from 71 balls.

After being put into bat, South Africa’s innings folded for 263 in 49.4 overs, courtesy of Abrar Ahmed’s and Naseem Shah’s three wickets.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Shaheen, who was leading the ODI side for the first time, shed light on the team’s victory.

“I think it’s a normal game for me and nothing special. Whatever the situation, just do your best and nothing more. I think we thought maybe we’ll get some help early on with the ball, and there will be dew in the second innings, but it totally changed,” he said.

The skipper praised the batters for taking the team out of trouble and aimed to avoid repeating the mistakes that had happened during the chase.

“I would give credit to our batter; they handled it well. We need experienced batting like this. Credit goes to them, they batted really well on a tough surface.”

“That always happens, but we’ll try to make it not happen again. Thanks to the Faisalabad crowd. Cricket here after a long time, and thank you for coming out in big numbers,” Shaheen concluded.

Cristiano Ronaldo hints at ’emotional’ retirement

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he plans to retire “soon” as the Portugal and Al Nassr star prepares for a tearful end to his glittering career.

Ronaldo discussed his thoughts on retirement and his life after football in an interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored.

The 40-year-old, who has scored a remarkable 952 goals, is one of the most decorated players in the history of the game, but the end is in sight for his astonishing career.

Asked when he would consider hanging up his boots, Ronaldo, who is under contract with Al Nassr until 2027, replied: “Soon. But I think I will be prepared.

“It will be tough, of course. It will be difficult? Yes. Probably will cry, yes. I’m an open person. It will be very, very difficult, yes.

“But Piers, I prepare my future since 25, 26, 27 years old, I prepare my future. So I think I will be capable to support that pressure.”

Ronaldo is confident he will be able to cope without football because he wants to focus on his family and his off-the-pitch interests.

“Nothing will be able to compare to the adrenaline that we have for football to score a goal,” he said.

“But everything has a beginning, and everything has an end. I have other passions. I’m going to have more time for me, I’m going to have more time for my family to raise my kids.

“I want to follow Cristiano Junior because he’s at an age when kids do stupid things. I was the same. Mateo loves football as well.

“I want to do more fun things. I love playing Padel with my closest friends. We are getting quite good.”

After starting his career with Sporting Lisbon, Ronaldo enjoyed successful spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.

He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League, among other trophies, in his first stint in Manchester.

Ronaldo joined Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr after leaving United for a second time in 2022.

He still looks out for the Premier League club’s results, given his affinity with their current manager — his former Portugal team-mate Ruben Amorim.

But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner warned United fans to not expect miracles from Amorim, who is in the midst of a rollercoaster reign at Old Trafford following his arrival 12 months ago.

“He’s doing his best,” Ronaldo said. “What are you going to do? Miracles. Miracles is impossible.

“He’s not going to do miracles. They have good players, but they don’t have some of them in mind what Manchester United is.

“Manchester United is still in my heart. I love that club. But we have all to be honest and look for ourselves and say, ‘Listen, they are not in a good path’. So, they need to change, and it’s not only about the coach and players, in my opinion.”

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ruled out of BBL 15

Veteran spin great Ravichandran Ashwin was ruled out of Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL 15) on Tuesday after undergoing knee surgery.

With this, he missed out on becoming the first Indian international to feature in the Twenty20 event.

The 39-year-old, who signed for Sydney Thunder in September, said in a statement: “I’m gutted to miss BBL.

“My focus now is recovery and coming back stronger. I’m grateful to the Thunder family and the fans for the warmth they’ve already shown me.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow any current player in Indian international or domestic cricket to feature in overseas leagues.

But Ashwin retired in December during India’s Test tour of Australia and quit the Indian Premier League in August, freeing him up.

“Everyone at Sydney Thunder was devastated to learn of Ash’s knee injury that has ruled him out of BBL, and we wish him well in his recovery,” said Thunder general manager Trent Copeland.

Ashwin, who played for five IPL franchises, finished his India career with 537 wickets in 106 Tests at an average of 24.00.

He also played 116 one-day and 65 Twenty20 internationals.

The BBL gets under way on December 14.

ICC suspends Haris Rauf for code of conduct breach

DUBAI: Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf has been banned for two matches by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for code of conduct breach during the Asia Cup 2025.

According to an ICC press release on Tuesday, the pacer earned four demerit points within 24 months due to multiple breaches of conduct due to incidents that occurred during the India-Pakistan clashes on September 14, 21, and 28.

“Following a hearing conducted by ICC Match Referee Richie Richardson, Haris Rauf (Pakistan) was again found guilty of a breach of Article 2.21. He was fined 30 per cent of his match fee and received two additional demerit points,” the press release said.

“This takes Rauf’s total to four demerit points within a 24-month period, resulting in two suspension points under the ICC’s disciplinary framework. In accordance with the Code, Rauf is therefore suspended for Pakistan’s ODI games against South Africa on 4 and 6 November 2025,” it added.

During the September 14 group-stage clash, Match Referee Richie Richardson found Rauf guilty of a breach of Article 2.21 and docked Rauf 30% of his match fee.

Rauf attracted attention while fielding near the boundary as he made gestures that depicted the action of bringing down a plane. This was interpreted as a mockery of India’s military action earlier this year.

He performed these gestures in response to Indian fans chanting “Kohli, Kohli,” referring to Virat Kohli’s famous sixes off Rauf during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav was also penalized 30 percent of his fee for the same offence, while Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan received an official warning and one demerit point.

Farhan, meanwhile, came under scrutiny for his unique half-century celebration, in which he mimicked firing a machine gun with his bat. The gesture was widely criticized as provocative.
