Injured Rodri out of Spain’s World Cup 2026 qualifiers

Spain confirmed Monday Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez will not be joining them for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, after suffering a hamstring injury.

Rodri is “out of the squad because of injury” said the Spanish national team in a statement, ahead of games against Georgia and Bulgaria on October 11 and October 14 respectively.

The 29-year-old was taken off in the 21st minute of City’s Premier League win over Brentford on Sunday, confirming after the game he had felt discomfort in his hamstring.

Rodri was a key part of Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph but suffered a serious knee injury in September of that year, missing the majority of last season as he recovered.

Spain did not say if they would be calling up another player in place of the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

On Sunday coach Luis de la Fuente selected Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias to replace injured Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.

Mohammad Amir opens up on comeback plans

Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir has dismissed talk of an international comeback, stating that it’s time for Pakistan cricket to move forward.

The 33-year-old explained that he has no intentions of making a comeback and his decision is final.

“For the past two or three days, I have been hearing that Mohammad Amir is making a comeback and taking back his retirement. No discussion has taken place with me about any comeback or withdrawing retirement, nor do I have any such plan. The decision I made regarding retirement is final,” Amir remarked

“My fans say that I should come back, but Pakistan cricket also needs to move forward,” he continued.

He also backed the Pakistan team for T20 World Cup glory after ending as runners-up in the Asia Cup 2025.

“There are young players in the team. If the youngsters play consistently, in two or three years a strong team will be formed. I hope the team will be well-prepared for the World Cup. We played the Asia Cup final; now I hope we play the World Cup final and win as well,” he stated.

Mohammad Amir lavished praise on wicket-keeper Sarafaraz Ahmed and talked about his potential role as a chief selector.

“Even if he is not appointed Chief Selector, if he comes in as a selector, it will be a good decision. Sarfaraz Ahmed has played with the current players, which could be an advantage,” he said.

“Sarfaraz Ahmed is an honest and sincere person; Pakistan cricket can benefit from people like him. Cricketers should also be capable of managing affairs and should be good players. Many cricketers came before, but they left the team in turmoil,” he concluded.

For the unversed, Mohammad Amir had previously announced his retirement from international cricket back in 2020 at the age of 28, citing differences with the then-team management.

However, he, along with Imad Wasim, came out of international retirement in 2024 and declared availability for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Ultimately, Amir decided to step away from international cricket again in 2019.

Unbeaten India thump Pakistan in Women’s World Cup clash

COLOMBO: A clinical bowling led by Kranti Goud’s three-wicket haul powered India to a comprehensive 88-run win over Pakistan in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 sixth fixture here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.

The win kept India’s perfect record intact against Pakistan, taking their tally to 12 victories and leaving the Green Shirts winless in ODIs.

Set 248, Pakistan crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 159 in 43 overs.

The girls in Green endured a poor and sluggish start as opener Muneeba Ali (2 from 12) was run out, followed by a controversy. While Sadaf Shamas was caught and bowled after scoring six from 24 balls.

As a result, Pakistan were reduced to 20-2 in 7.3 overs. Aliya Riaz followed her in the 11th over and was caught after scoring just two.

Following the early hiccups, Sidra Amin and Natalia Pervaiz tried to steady Pakistan with a 69-run stand. The duo’s steady batting took the team’s total to 95; however, with the asking rate soaring, Pervaiz fell cheaply.

Nonetheless, Sidra held firm with wickets tumbling around her and eventually reached her half-century in the process. The right-hander found no support from the other end and eventually departed in the 39th over. She made 81 from 106 balls laced with nine fours and a six.

With her wickets, it was only a matter of time as Pakistan’s innings folded in 43 overs.

For India, Kranti Goud and Deepti Sharma scalped three wickets each.

Earlier, Diana Baig’s impressive four-wicket haul helped Pakistan bowl out India for 247. After being put into bat first, India were bundled out for 247 in 50 overs.

The openers provided a 47-run start with Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana scoring 31 and 23 runs respectively.

Pakistan got its first breakthrough in the form of Mandhana, who was trapped lbw by Fatima Sana. India’s second wicket fell in a short time as Sadia Iqbal castled Rawal.

As a result, the women in blue were reduced to 67-2 in 14.5 overs. After openers were sent back, Harleen Deol and captain Harmanpreet Kaur added 39 runs to the total, which steadied India’s innings.

Despite wickets falling, Deol held firm and was involved in another stand of 45 runs with Jemimah Rodrigues. The duo’s batting helped their team cross the 150-run mark.

However, the duo’s wickets in the 33rd and 34th over pegged the hosts back and allowed Pakistan to tighten the screws in the latter half of the innings.

Deol, who top scored with 46 from 65, struck four boundaries and a six in her knock, while Rodrigues managed to score 32 from 37 balls with the aid of five fours.

India’s total could have been well under 250, but it was Richa Ghosh’s cameo that lifted them to a respectable total. She made 35 from 20, striking two maximums and three fours.

For Pakistan, Diana Baig picked up four wickets, whereas Sadia Iqbal and Fatima Sana supported her well with two wickets each.

Ahmed Shehzad urges Saim Ayub to learn ‘art of batting’ amid poor form

Pakistan Test cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has urged opening batter Saim Ayub to ‘learn the art of batting’ following his horror run with the bat in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025.

Saim Ayub had endured a poor run with the bat in the continental tournament. The southpaw bagged overall four ducks, including three in a row, and could only manage to score 37 runs in just seven innings.

On the contrary, he had an impressive outing with the ball as he picked up eight wickets in six innings at an economy of 6.40 per over. Following his bowling contributions, he became the No.1 all-rounder in ICC T20I rankings.

Appearing in a recent podcast, Ahmed Shehzad reflected on his past comments about the left-hander, recalling that once he warned Saim could prove dangerous for Pakistan.

“Yes is proving to be dangerous,” he said in a light-hearted manner given his current struggles.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

Ahmed Shehzad nevertheless praised the left-hander’s talent and called him a ‘blessing’ for Pakistan. He also mentioned Saim’s time with Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Quetta Gladiators.

“It’s turning out to be a blessing in disguise for us that we have this kind of talent.” “He was with us at Quetta Gladiators, where he hardly got any chances. He worked hard and started playing with more flair. Then he had one good season,” he continued.

The 33-year-old pointed out systematic flaws and the scarcity of batting talent in the country, alongside mentioning his performance and the number of matches he had played.

“In a country where there aren’t many players, when you find someone like this, you have to support him.

He has already been given 50 chances — that’s the length of some players’ entire careers. He has been handed 50 chances despite failures,” he added.

Shehzad also emphasized his bowling and suggested that he needs to play domestic cricket to regain his form rather than being discarded altogether.

“His bowling can be useful against sides like Oman or UAE, but against stronger teams, it hasn’t worked. India, for example, took him apart.”

“Saim has to learn the art of scoring runs. He should go back to domestic cricket, play ‘A’ tours. There is no need to discard him completely,” he concluded.

South Africa’s Van Heerden becomes first injury replacement under new trial

CAPE TOWN: South Africa’s Joshuwa van Heerden has become the first like-for-like injury replacement under the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) new trial regulation for substitutes, introduced in domestic competitions.

Van Heerden replaced Edward Moore in a provincial four-day game at Newlands, during the second round of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) first-class competition.

Moore suffered an injury while fielding on the second day, which ruled him out of the match.

The trial is part of an ICC initiative aimed at finding a solution for handling player injuries during a match.

Alongside South Africa, the new regulation is also being implemented in Australia’s domestic tournament Sheffield Shield and India’s Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy.

Unlike India, which currently permits replacements only for external injuries under strict protocols, South Africa and Australia are testing the rule for both internal and external injuries.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

For internal injuries, such as Moore’s, the player is required to undergo an Ultrasound or an MRI scan, with a medical report sent to CSA’s chief medical officer and CSA’s cricket operations manager

These officials determine the seriousness of the injury and whether it’s sufficient to warrant a replacement.

If the injury is external — for example, a broken bone — the match referee can approve the substitution in consultation with stakeholders.

Notably, the injured player can only be substituted if he cannot take part in the match at all. The variations in protocols result from the different methods that countries intend to use when testing the system.

Each country will provide reports to the ICC, which may then create regulations for comparable substitutions in international cricket. As it stands, substitutions during international matches are only allowed for concussion-related issues.

Following the victory, the Pakistan Wrestling Federation (PWF) president, Arshad Satter, expressed gratitude and pride in the achievement.

“We wholeheartedly thank the Pakistan Sports Board for giving priority to wrestling among all sports. Alhamdulillah, our wrestlers lived up to that trust by winning a medal, proving that Pakistani wrestlers have the ability to deliver world-class performances,” he said.

Premier League: Kudus fires Spurs into second with win at Leeds

Mohammed Kudus’ first Tottenham goal lifted Spurs up to second in the Premier League by ending Leeds United long unbeaten home run with a 2-1 win on Saturday.

Noah Okafor cancelled out Mathys Tel’s opener for the visitors in a first half that raged from end to end.

Kudus grabbed the winner just before the hour mark, and Tottenham had to show their newfound defensive resolve under Thomas Frank to inflict Leeds’ first league defeat at Elland Road for 24 games.

Spurs close to within one point of leaders Liverpool, but Arsenal can go top later on Saturday when they host West Ham.

Tottenham needed late fightbacks to avoid defeat against bottom-of-the-table Wolves and Champions League debutants Bodo/Glimt over the past week.

Frank made six changes to the side that started in the Arctic Circle on Tuesday and was rewarded with a far more purposeful performance from the visitors.

But Leeds will rue their missed chances to avoid a first league defeat at Elland Road since losing to Burnley in September 2024.

Joe Rodon should have put the home side in front when he headed Sean Longstaff’s free-kick off the post on seven minutes.

Tel was left out of Spurs’ Champions League squad after struggling to make an impression since making his move from Bayern Munich a permanent one in the transfer window.

The Frenchman was handed a rare chance to start in the middle of a front three and made it count with his first goal of the season.

Tel was played in by Kudus and his powerful shot deflected off Pascal Struijk to leave Karl Darlow helpless.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin blazed a glorious chance to level wide before Kudus did the same at the other end as a slick Spurs counter-attack cut Leeds open.

However, Daniel Farke’s men were well worthy of being at least level at the break.

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario should have done better as he could only parry Brenden Aaronson’s shot back into the path of Okafor, who tapped in to an empty net for his second Leeds goal.

Tel came close to his second with a looping header that hit the crossbar in first-half stoppage time.

The second half started in a similar end-to-end fashion as Vicario denied Calvert-Lewin with his feet.

Kudus then produced the match-winning moment with a surging run infield before unleashing another powerful shot that deceived Darlow via a deflection off Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Last season, Tottenham lost more points from winning positions than any other side in the Premier League on their way to finishing just above the relegation zone in 17th.

Frank has so far stamped out that habit as Spurs are yet to drop points after taking the lead in a match.

The visitors had to survive a scare deep into stoppage time when Vicario redeemed himself with a fine save low to his left from Joel Piroe.

Defeat leaves Leeds in 12th with eight points from their first seven games.
