Women’s World Cup: Australia-Sri Lanka share points after washout

COLOMBO: The fifth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 between Australia and Sri Lanka has been abandoned without a ball bowled due to persistent rain here on Saturday.

The conditions in Colombo worsened, which prevented the toss from happening as both teams were awarded one point.

Following the washout, Australia now sits at the top of the table with three points, whereas Sri Lanka slipped to fifth place with a negative run-rate of -1.255.

Before heading into the match, both teams had contrasting results. Defending champions Australia defeated New Zealand by 89 runs in a one-sided affair, while India outplayed Sri Lanka by 59 runs (Via DLS method).

Meanwhile, Pakistan is set to clash against arch-rivals India at the same venue; however, the forecast shows an ample chance of rain, which could interrupt the match.

The 13th edition of the marquee event is jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, running from September 30 to November 2 across five cities.

Eight teams are competing in a round-robin format, out of which the top four will advance to the knockout stage.

Women’s World Cup: Confident Sana eyes maiden ODI win over India

COLOMBO: Pakistan women’s team skipper Fatima Sana expressed confidence in her side ahead of the clash against arch-rivals India in ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, set to be played on Sunday here at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

Fatima Sana remained confident despite Pakistan trailing India 0-11 in the head-to-head record in women’s ODIs.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Sana stated that they can win against any side if they play good cricket.

“Records are meant to be broken. It is not true that we will never win against India. We can beat any team by playing good cricket,” she said. “We have good memories of playing against India in the past.”

Reflecting on the defeat against Bangladesh in the opener, the 23-year-old highlighted upcoming matches and aimed for improved performances.

“Coaches told me to believe in myself. Losing one match doesn’t matter; the whole tournament is still ahead. We don’t think about outside distractions,” she said.

The all-rounder also lavished praise on Diana Baig and mentioned the importance of senior players’ support.

“Diana Baig is a very good player, and she supports the youngsters. Hopefully, we will deliver better performances in the coming matches. Muneeba Ali has performed in the past; you can’t drop a player after just one or two matches. Senior players’ support is very important for me.”

She aimed to repeat the Qualifiers performance, held earlier this year in which Pakistan demonstrated impressive performance and emerged victorious.

“We played well in the Qualifiers; we need to repeat that performance. We have the power to beat any team,” she concluded.

Jadeja stars as India crush West Indies inside three days

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja starred with bat and ball as India hammered West Indies by an innings and 140 runs inside three days of the first Test on Saturday.

India declared on their overnight 448-5, a lead of 286, and then bundled the West Indies out for 146 in the second session at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

It was another heavy and demoralising defeat for West Indies, who are a pale shadow of the team that once ruled world cricket.

Left-handed Jadeja stood out for India with 4-54 from his spin bowling after he hit an unbeaten 104 for his sixth Test century and was named player of the match.

Alick Athanaze, a left-handed number three, made 38 and offered some belated resistance with Justin Greaves in a partnership of 46, but the rest of the West Indies batting fell apart.

Washington Sundar and then pace bowler Mohammed Siraj struck regular blows before Kuldeep Yadav wrapped up the match as the West Indies innings folded in 45.1 overs.

Siraj continued his good form with figures of 4-40 in the first innings after West Indies opted to bat.

He then extended his tally of wickets this year to 30, after playing a key role in India’s 2-2 draw in England.

India have still not lost a Test to the West Indies at home since 1994.

West Indies were swept 3-0 at home by Australia this year and were bowled out for 27 in the third match — the second-lowest score in Test history.

Their batting woes continued after they won the toss and could only manage a meagre first innings total of 162.

KL Rahul led India’s batting dominance with his 100 before Dhruv Jurel, who made 125, and Jadeja put on 206 for the fifth wicket on Friday.

Jadeja took on the West Indies spinners, hitting left-arm orthodox Jomel Warrican for five sixes.

Chase claimed two wickets, and debutant left-arm spinner Khary Pierre claimed his first in a Test after wicketkeeper-batter Jurel registered his maiden Test century.

West Indies have struggled in the absence of premier fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph, both ruled out with injury.

India are strong favourites to win 2-0 against an opposition that is a pale shadow of the team that once ruled world cricket.

The second Test begins on October 10 in New Delhi.

Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI skipper

The squad includes veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who will be representing India for the first time since their Champions Trophy triumph in 2025.

Rashid Khan dismisses ‘second-best in Asia’ tag, stresses hunger to improve

SHARJAH: Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has shared his thoughts regarding the ‘second-best in Asia’ tag, stating that his team’s goal is to improve their performances.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Rashid said that they have not called them the second-best side.

“There’s always talk about us being the second-best team in Asia, but that’s not something we claimed ourselves,” he said.

The spin wizard highlighted Afghanistan’s past performances and stressed the need for improvement in their performance.

“That label came because of our past performances. If you look back — Asia Cup, World Cup semi-finals, ODI World Cup — we’ve beaten some top sides. Even in the Champions Trophy, we defeated England. Of course, in the future, if we don’t play well, we could slip to third, fourth, fifth, or lower,” he continued.

“Our goal is simply to improve as a team and deliver on the day. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t — that’s cricket. What matters is staying hungry to perform and aiming to get better every time. The whole ‘second-best in Asia’ narrative is just something the media has created, not us,” Rashid concluded.

For context, Afghanistan is currently playing a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Notably, after being eliminated from the Asia Cup 2025 group stage, they started their series against the Tigers on a poor note as well.

Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by four wickets in the T20I opener at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

After opting to bat first, Afghanistan could only muster 151 for 9 in their 20 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored with 40 from 31 balls, studded with three sixes and two fours.

In reply, Bangladesh hit the winning runs in 18.4 overs, courtesy of a strong opening foundation. Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan starred with the bat, both scoring half-centuries.

Despite the defeat, Rashid Khan remained the standout bowler for Afghanistan, picking up a four-wicket haul in his quota of four overs.

The second T20I between the two teams is currently underway at the same venue, with Bangladesh eyeing a series win after opting to bowl first.

Sana Mir responds to Indian media backlash over ‘Azad Kashmir’ remarks

Former Pakistan women’s team captain Sana Mir has strongly dismissed criticism from the Indian media over her reference to “Azad Kashmir” during live commentary at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.

The controversy began in Pakistan and Bangladesh on Thursday, when she mentioned cricketer Natalia Pervaiz’s hometown as Azad Kashmir.

Indian outlets immediately jumped in and accused her of politicising the broadcast and urged the ICC to take action.

Rahul Rawat of India Today, Aaj Tak, and Sports Tak posted on social media platforms and criticized the commentator.

“Former Pakistan captain Sana Mir has stirred a hornet’s nest by bringing up the Kashmir issue during live commentary today… The ICC is expected to act against Sana Mir.”

Senior journalist Vikrant Gupta echoed the sentiment, tagging ICC and BCCI officials while demanding “stern action” against Mir.

Fueling the debate further, Natalia Pervaiz’s Cricinfo profile — which initially listed her birthplace as Bandala, Azad Jammu and Kashmir — was later updated to Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Breaking her silence, Mir took to X to clarify and urged people to stay away from politics.

“It’s unfortunate how things are being blown out of proportion. My comment about a Pakistan player’s hometown was only meant to highlight the challenges she faced and her incredible journey. Please don’t politicise it.”

She emphasized that her words carried no political agenda and that she had no intention of hurting sentiments.

“As commentators, we focus on the sport, teams, and players, telling inspiring stories of grit and perseverance. There is no malice in my heart or intention to hurt sentiments.”

Pakistan Wheelchair Cricket Team outplays Afghanistan to clinch T20I series

KARACHI: Pakistan Wheelchair Cricket Team showcased dominance and determination as they defeated Afghanistan by 9 wickets in the fourth and final T20I here at the UBL Sports Complex.

With this victory, Pakistan sealed the four-match T20I series 3–1.

The victory was anchored by outstanding half-centuries from Gohar Afridi and Usama Tariq, while all-rounder Muhammad Fayyaz continued to shine, earning the title of Player of the Tournament.

Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite a steady start, they struggled to build a big total against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling.

Jaber Safi top-scored with 38 runs, while Zar Alam (23) and Raheemullah (14 not out) provided brief resistance.

Other batters, including Mansoor Adil (14) and Abasin (15), failed to convert starts into significant scores.

Afghanistan ended their innings at 155/8 in 20 overs. Pakistan’s bowling was led by Muhammad Fayyaz, who took two key wickets, while Ayub and Ahmad Yar chipped in with one wicket each.

In response, Pakistan’s batters came out with a clear attacking mindset. Gohar Afridi lit up the ground with a brilliant 64 off just 41 balls, smashing 14 boundaries in his aggressive knock.

He was well supported by Usama Tariq, who remained unbeaten on 60 runs, ensuring Pakistan’s chase never faltered.

Muhammad Fayyaz added 24 runs to his all-round effort before being dismissed, the only wicket to fall. Pakistan comfortably reached 156/1 in 14.4 overs, securing an emphatic victory. Afghanistan’s Mir Akbar was the lone wicket-taker for his side.

At the post-match ceremony, Gohar Afridi was declared Player of the Match for his explosive innings, while Muhammad Fayyaz was honored as Player of the Tournament for his consistent all-round performances across the series.

Pakistan’s skipper Muhammad Zeeshan dedicated the series triumph to the Pakistan Army and national martyrs.

“This is not only Pakistan’s success, but a victory for wheelchair cricket as a whole. We have also worked to support the growth of Afghan wheelchair cricket, which is why this historic tour became possible,” he added.

Afghanistan’s captain, Mansoor Adi,l expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s hospitality and praised the competitive spirit of the series

“It was a proud moment for us to play our first international wheelchair cricket series in Pakistan. Our players showed passion and commitment, and we hope to carry this momentum into the upcoming Asia Cup.”

“We are thankful to the Pakistan Wheelchair Cricket Council and management for their warm welcome and outstanding arrangements. Pakistan’s hospitality has deeply impressed us, and we look forward to more such opportunities,” he said.

The successful conclusion of this series marked another milestone in the promotion of wheelchair cricket in the region. Both teams not only competed fiercely on the field but also strengthened the spirit of sportsmanship, brotherhood, and inclusion through the game.

Dominant England crush South Africa in Women’s World Cup clash

GUWAHATI: Linsey Smith’s three-wicket haul helped England women rout South Africa women in the fourth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, giving them a flying start to their campaign here at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Set a meagre 70-run target, England romped to victory by 10 wickets in 14.1 overs.

After a miserable batting display, the Proteas had little to celebrate with the ball either. England’s openers wrapped up the chase with ease, as Tammy Beaumont struck three fours in her 21* from 35 balls, while Amy Jones’ score of 40* off 50 deliveries was laced with six fours.

Earlier, the four-time World Cup champions capitalized on the decision to field first and bowled out South Africa for just 69 runs in 20 overs. This was Proteas’ second-lowest total in the marquee event.

Notably, South Africa’s previous lowest total in a World Cup match also came against England in Cuttack, back in 2013.

Linsey Smith made early inroads with the new ball and tore through the Proteas top order. She removed Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits in the second and fourth over, respectively, both batters being dismissed for five runs.

After losing early wickets, South Africa could not arrest the slide and were further dented by regular dismissals. Following Smith’s spell, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Lauren Bell chipped in with the ball and broke the backbone of South Africa’s batting lineup.

Sinalo Jafta top-scored for South Africa with 22 from 36 balls with the aid of three fours in an otherwise shambolic batting display.

In England’s all-round bowling display, Linsey Smith stood tall and was excellent with the ball, picking up three wickets in her four overs while giving away just seven. Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, and Charlie Dean bagged two wickets each.
