T20 World Cup: Hat-trick hero Shepherd powers West Indies past Scotland

KOLKATA: Romario Shepherd took a hat-trick-laden five-wicket haul to seal a 35-run victory for West Indies over Scotland in their second fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 here at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.

Set a stiff 183, Scotland were bowled out for 147 in 18.5 overs.

After losing 37-3 in 5.4 overs, skipper Richie Berrington joined hands with Tom Bruce, adding a 78-run partnership from 47 deliveries to put the chase back on track.

The pair brought the total to 115 in 13.2 overs before Jason Holder dismissed Berrington to give West Indies an opening.

The skipper top-scored with 42 off 24 with the help of two sixes and three fours.

Following the wicket, Scotland slumped to 122-5 and then 133-8 in 16.4 overs, putting West Indies in a dominant position.

The architect of the lower-order collapse was Shepherd, who picked up four wickets in the 16th over.

The right arm pacer first removed Matthew Cross, Michael Leask, and Oliver Davidson on the second, third, and fourth deliveries of the over to bag a hat-trick.

He then closed out the over with Safyaan Sharif’s wicket to leave Scotland in disarray.

Consequently, Scotland fell 35 runs short of the target, handing the 2016 champions a solid start to their campaign.

For West Indies, besides Shepherd, Jason Holder, who started the proceedings, took three wickets to his name and added his name to the bowling chart.

Earlier, after being put into bat first, West Indies racked up 182-5 in their 20 overs.

West Indies had a cautious start with 54 on the board without a wicket in 8.2 overs.

However, Scotland’s bowlers reaped high rewards for keeping it tight in the early overs. They got two wickets in quick succession to reduce West Indies for 58-2 in 9.2 overs.

Brandon King made a sluggish 35 off 30 balls, striking four boundaries and a six. On the other hand, Hope managed 19 from 22 with the help of two fours.

With two wickets, in came Shimron Hetmyer, who turned things around with his record-breaking 22-ball half-century. The left-hander smashed the fastest fifty for the West Indies in the World Cup and powered his side into a dominant position.

He eventually departed after scoring 64 off 36, smashing half a dozen sixes and two fours. At this stage, West Indies were in a commanding position with the score at 175-4 in 19 overs.

In the last two overs, Scotland bowled tight overs to hold things back with Brad Currie returning as the most successful bowler for them with two scalps to his name.

Quetta Gladiators sign Spencer Johnson as direct signing for PSL 11

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Quetta Gladiators have signed Australia left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson as a direct signing for the upcoming edition of the tournament.

The announcement, anticipated over the past few days, was finally made via the franchise’s social channels.

“Pace. Bounce. Passion. Bringing the fire from Australia, please welcome Spencer Johnson as our Direct Signing . The game has just gone a level up with our new Gladiator,” the caption of the post read.

Johnson, 30, is not part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad due to injury. He has not played any professional cricket since appearing for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise KKR against LSG in April 2025.

Overall, he has played five ODIs and eight T20Is for Australia. Besides his international experience, he has played 71 T20s and scalped 85 wickets.

It is worth mentioning that PSL 11 represents a significant transformation in the tournament’s player recruitment system, as the traditional draft format has been replaced by a full-scale auction for the first time since the league’s inception.

Each franchise has been allocated a purse of PKR 450 million for squad building, with an additional PKR 55 million reserved for direct signings under the new model.

All participating teams, including the two newly-added franchises, Hyderabad and Sialkot Stallionz, have already confirmed their retentions ahead of the auction.

Most franchises have also announced their direct signings, with Quetta Gladiators being the only side yet to reveal theirs.

Meanwhile, Multan Sultans remain in a unique position heading into the auction. The franchise, currently without an owner, will enter the bidding process with a full purse after retaining no players and making no direct signings.

Notably, the Multan franchise is scheduled to be sold through a separate auction in Lahore on February 9, just two days before the PSL 11 player auction.

Cristiano Ronaldo sits out second straight Al Nassr match

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo missed his second consecutive match for Al Nassr on Friday, with reports linking his absence to an ongoing dispute involving the Saudi Pro League and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The 41-year-old Portuguese forward has not featured since Al Nassr’s 2-0 win over Al Ittihad and was also unavailable for Monday’s victory against Al Riyadh.

While the club had expected their star striker to return, international media suggested Ronaldo remained unhappy over unfulfilled promises regarding changes to Al Nassr’s management structure.

Speculation around his absence had already surfaced earlier in the week, with some reports pointing to frustration over the club’s activity, or lack thereof, in the January transfer window.

Ronaldo was reportedly disappointed by the level of support provided to strengthen the squad, particularly after his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema joined rivals Al Ittihad.

Despite the uncertainty, Al Nassr supporters made their feelings clear at Al-Awwal Park. In a show of loyalty, fans raised yellow placards bearing Ronaldo’s name and iconic No. 7 during the seventh minute of the match.

Amid the growing narrative, the Saudi Pro League released a firm statement on Thursday, stressing that no individual player holds influence beyond his own club.

“The Saudi Pro League is structured around a simple principle: every club operates independently under the same rules,” the statement read.

On the pitch, Al Nassr continued their strong run, climbing to second place in the standings with their latest win, just one point behind leaders Al Hilal.

WATCH: Babar Azam takes stunning boundary-line catch against Netherlands

COLOMBO: Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam delivered a moment of brilliance in the field, pulling off a spectacular boundary-line catch during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 opener against the Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground on Saturday.

The stunning effort came on the second ball of Mohammad Nawaz’s first over, when Netherlands’ in-form batter Michael Levitt launched a shot that appeared destined to clear the ropes.

Positioned near the boundary, Babar timed his leap to perfection, plucking the ball mid-air before calmly lobbing it back to Shaheen Shah Afridi, who completed the catch to seal a memorable dismissal.

Levitt, who had looked dangerous during his brief stay, scored a brisk 24 off 15 deliveries, striking three fours and a six before falling to Pakistan’s sharp fielding effort.

Despite Levitt’s intent, the Netherlands struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Pakistan bowling attack and were eventually bowled out for 147 in the final over.

Salman Mirza led the charge with the ball, finishing as the pick of the bowlers with impressive figures of 3 for 24 in 3.5 overs.

Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed and Saim Ayub chipped in with two wickets apiece, while Shaheen Afridi claimed one to round off a collective bowling performance.

Faheem Ashraf holds nerve to help Pakistan down spirited Netherlands

COLOMBO: Faheem Ashraf held on to his nerve in the final overs to help Pakistan edge past a spirited Netherlands side in the opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 here on Saturday at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Chasing 148, the men in green crossed the line at 147 for 7 in 19.3 overs, surviving a nervy finish after the Netherlands applied sustained pressure through the middle overs.

Pakistan made a strong start through openers Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan, who provided early momentum.

Ayub set the tone with a brisk 24 off 13 balls, striking four boundaries and a six, before falling to spinner Aryan Dutt.

Farhan then combined with captain Salman Ali Agha to keep the scoring rate healthy, adding 50 runs by the fifth over.

However, Dutt struck again to remove Agha for 12 off eight balls, leaving Pakistan at 53 for 2 in 4.5 overs.

Despite the early wickets, Farhan remained composed and anchored the chase, eventually finding his rhythm.

He moved within sight of a ninth T20I half-century before being dismissed for 47 off 31 balls, an innings featuring four fours and two sixes. His wicket, claimed by Paul van Meekeren, reduced Pakistan to 98 for 3 in 11.1 overs.

Meanwhile, star batter Babar Azam struggled for his 18-ball 15 before falling to Roelof van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe struck again in the same over, dismissing Usman Khan for a second-ball duck, tightening the grip of the Netherlands on the contest.

Pakistan slipped further when another middle-order batter managed just 15 off 18 balls, allowing the visitors to build pressure during the crucial phase of the chase.

In the final five overs, Pakistan lost two more wickets as Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan fell for six and eight, respectively, courtesy of Kyle Klein and Logan van Beek.

With the required run rate climbing, Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Shah Afridi held their nerve. Ashraf turned the match with a flurry of boundaries, including consecutive sixes, to swing momentum back in Pakistan’s favour.

Faheem finished unbeaten on a decisive 29 off just 11 balls, smashing two fours and three sixes, as Pakistan sealed a memorable win in the final over.

Earlier, the Netherlands innings began brightly after being invited to bat first as openers Michael Levitt and Max O’Dowd took early control, finding the boundary regularly.

Levitt, in particular, put Pakistan’s bowlers under pressure during the powerplay with an aggressive approach.

Pakistan drew first blood in the fourth over when Salman Mirza dismissed O’Dowd for five off seven balls, with wicketkeeper Usman Khan completing the catch behind the stumps.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz then provided a key breakthrough in the fifth over by removing the in-form Levitt for 24 off 15 balls, an innings that included three fours and a six.

The dismissal featured a moment of brilliance in the field as Babar Azam leapt near the boundary to stop the ball before relaying it to Saim Ayub, who completed the catch.

Bas de Leede and Colin Ackermann attempted to rebuild, guiding the Netherlands past the 50-run mark inside the powerplay.

However, Pakistan struck again in the eighth over when Abrar Ahmed dismissed Ackermann for 20 off 14 balls, including four boundaries, leaving the Netherlands 65 for 3.

The visitors reached 100 runs in the 13th over, with captain Scott Edwards hitting a six off Nawaz. The spinner responded immediately, removing de Leede for 30 off 25 balls, making it 105 for 4.

Abrar continued his impressive spell by claiming his second wicket, dismissing Edwards for a crucial 37 off 29 balls, further denting the Netherlands’ momentum.

All-rounder Saim Ayub then struck twice in the following over, removing Logan van Beek for a first-ball duck and Zach Lion-Cachet for nine, reducing the Netherlands to 129 for 7.

Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi chipped in by dismissing Roelof van der Merwe for four, before Salman Mirza wrapped up the innings in the final over, removing Aryan Dutt for 13 and Paul van Meekeren for a duck.

Salman Mirza finished as the standout bowler with three wickets for 24 runs in 3.5 overs. Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed and Saim Ayub picked up two wickets each, while Shaheen Afridi claimed one.

Injury blow for Sri Lanka as key player ruled out of T20 World Cup

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback, with fast bowler Eshan Malinga ruled out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 due to a shoulder injury, while Pramod Madushan has been named as his replacement.

Malinga’s availability had been under serious doubt since he dislocated his shoulder during the second T20I against England earlier this month.

The injury occurred immediately after a rain interruption when the right-arm pacer delivered the first ball of his spell, clutching his non-bowling shoulder in visible pain before collapsing on the field.

He was subsequently ruled out of the third match of the series, and further medical assessment has now confirmed his absence from the global event.

Sri Lanka have turned to Pramod Madushan as his replacement, with the fast bowler returning to the T20I setup after a gap.

Madushan, who made his international debut in 2022, has played eight T20Is and claimed 12 wickets at an economy rate of 8.63, with his last appearance in the format coming in 2023.
