Christian Pulisic plays down injury concerns after USA’s win

United States of America (USA) star Christian Pulisic played down injury concerns after he was hooked at half-time in the World Cup co-hosts’ 4-1 opening win over Paraguay, telling journalists it was just a precaution.

“I just got a bit of a kick in the first half, so I’m really hoping that it’s nothing. Taking a little bit of precaution today. But I’m hoping I’ll be fine in the next few days,” said Pulisic.

The AC Milan forward is the US team’s talisman, shouldering the weight of a nation’s expectations as they try to make history with a deep run in a World Cup in which all of their games will be played on home soil.

Pulisic was a constant menace in a rampant first half, providing an assist as well as helping create Paraguay’s own goal with a clever one-two with Weston McKennie.

But he was taken off at the half, and later told reporters he had received a knock in “the back of my leg.”

“Sort of my (left) calf area. But I’ve had similar things before…I’m staying positive. I don’t think it’s anything at all.”

Coach Mauricio Pochettino also said the forward was substituted because “we didn’t want to take any risks.”

The US will hope Pulisic is correct, after the convincing win, with games ahead against Australia on Friday, and Turkey.

“An incredible start, but there’s a lot more that we still have to do,” said Pulisic.

Balogun double inspires USA to commanding win over Paraguay

LOS ANGELES: Folarin Balogun scored twice as hosts United States of America (USA) launched their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion with a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay in front of a packed home crowd on Friday.

The Monaco striker starred in a dominant attacking display as the United States delighted 70,492 fans at a sold-out stadium in Los Angeles, putting themselves in a strong position in Group D, which also features Australia and Turkey.

A number of high-profile celebrities were in attendance for the occasion, including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton, as the co-hosts produced a performance worthy of the occasion.

The United States made the perfect start and took the lead inside seven minutes. Weston McKennie drove forward from midfield before linking up with Christian Pulisic, who returned the ball to his teammate.

McKennie then found Balogun inside the area, and the danger ultimately resulted in an own goal by Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla.

Balogun thought he had doubled the advantage midway through the first half, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The striker was not denied for long, however. Just three minutes later, Antonee Robinson released Pulisic down the left flank, and the captain’s cross found Balogun, who finished from close range to make it 2-0.

The hosts continued to dominate proceedings and added a third goal just before halftime through another moment of brilliance from Balogun.

The forward collected a pass from Malik Tillman on the right side of the penalty area, skipped past two defenders and curled a superb finish into the top corner to complete his brace.

Paraguay showed signs of life in the second half when Julio Enciso created an opening for substitute Mauricio, who reduced the deficit and briefly gave the South Americans hope.

Any hopes of a Paraguay revival were quickly extinguished in stoppage time when Gio Reyna produced a moment of quality to seal the victory.

The midfielder curled a delightful effort into the far corner with the outside of his right foot to cap an impressive performance from the hosts.

Iran to travel to USA one day before first World Cup match

The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) on Tuesday announced that their team will fly to Los Angeles the day before their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against New Zealand.

The Iranian team will be based in Tijuana, Mexico, throughout the tournament, despite playing their first three round matches in the United States.

Iran will open their campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on Monday, before facing Belgium in the same city on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

Their involvement has been overshadowed by the military conflict between Iran and the United States.

While the players obtained the visas necessary to enter the United States of America (USA), 15 members of their support team in management and administrative roles did not receive them.

The visa dispute erupted just days before the World Cup kicks off on Thursday. The tournament is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“In accordance with FIFA’s programme, the team delegation will travel to the United States on a charter flight,” the Iranian federation’s spokesperson Amir Mehdi Alavi said in a statement carried by Iran’s ISNA news agency.

“The team will travel to the host city one day before the match against New Zealand, and for the following two matches, we will be at the host venue two days before the game,” he added.

Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali separately warned against the display of certain symbols during matches.

“If, in the stadiums where we play, we see any flag or symbol other than that of the Islamic Republic of Iran, or if norm-breaking slogans are chanted, the team official will certainly have a duty to stop the match,” he was quoted by Iran’s official IRNA news agency as saying.

“It is the responsibility of the organisers to rectify the situation,” he added.

FIFA rules prohibit political symbols at World Cup matches.

Iran confirms World Cup 2026 participation, seeks conditions from hosts

Iran’s football federation said on Saturday that the men’s national team will take part in the FIFA World Cup 2026 this summer, but demanded that the joint hosts, the United States of America (USA), Mexico and Canada, agree to its conditions amid the Middle East war.

The call comes after Canada refused entry to the federation’s chief last month before the FIFA Congress because of his links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the ideological arm of Iran’s military, which it designated as a terror group in 2024.

Iran’s presence at the tournament, which will take place between June 11 and July 19, has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel.

“We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account,” the Iranian federation said on its official website.

“We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions.”

The Iranian football federation (FFIRI) president, Mehdi Taj, told state TV on Friday that Tehran has 10 conditions for attending the global spectacle, seeking assurances over the country’s treatment.

The conditions include visas being granted and respect for the national team staff, the team’s flag and its national anthem during the tournament, as well as demands for high security at airports, hotels and routes to the stadiums where they will play.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has insisted that Iran’s footballers would be welcome at the tournament.

But he warned that the US may yet bar entry to members of the Iranian delegation with ties to the IRGC, which it also designates as a terrorist organisation.

“All players and technical staff, especially those who have served their military service in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC, such as Mehdi Taremi and Ehsan Hajsafi, should be granted visas without any problems,” said Iranian football chief Taj.

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino has reiterated that Iran will play their World Cup games in the United States as scheduled.

Iran, who are due to be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the World Cup 2026, face New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in Group G.

The Iranians open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.

“No external power can deprive Iran of its participation in a cup to which it has qualified with merit,” the Iranian federation said on Saturday.

FIFA president Infantino reiterates Iran will play World Cup in USA

FIFA President Gianni Infantino reiterated that Iran will play their World Cup 2026 games in the United States of America (USA) as scheduled, as football’s power-brokers met in Vancouver on Thursday.

Iran’s participation at this year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States has been shrouded in uncertainty since the eruption of war in the Middle East in February following strikes by the United States and Israel.

Infantino, who has repeatedly stated that Iran will be at the World Cup, underscored that stance at the start of his address to delegates as FIFA’s 76th Congress got underway in western Canada.

“Let me start by the outset, confirming straightaway that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026,” Infantino said. “And of course, Iran will play (in) the United States of America.”

Infantino’s remarks drew swift support from close ally US President Donald Trump, who told reporters in the Oval Office he was “OK” with Iran’s participation.

“Well, if Gianni said it, I’m OK,” Trump said. “I think let ’em play.”

Iranian officials had floated the idea of shifting their group games from the United States to Mexico, but that proposal had already been nixed by Infantino.

In a further twist last week, Italy-born US special envoy Paolo Zampolli was reported to have floated the idea of Italy taking Iran’s World Cup place.

The US government later distanced themselves from that proposal, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Iran’s footballers would be welcome. But the tension surrounding Iran’s World Cup participation rumbled into the build-up to Thursday’s summit.

Iran’s delegation was the only absentee from the 211-member congress as Thursday’s meeting got underway after a clash with Canadian border officials earlier this week.

Officials from the Iranian football federation (FFIRI) abruptly left Canada after landing in Toronto, abandoning their onward trip to Vancouver.

Iranian media said FFIRI president Mehdi Taj, a former member of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and two colleagues flew home after being “insulted” by Canadian immigration officers.

Canada, which designated the IRGC a terrorist organization in 2024, said Wednesday that individuals linked to the force were “inadmissible.”

Iran, who are due to be based in Tucson, Arizona, during the World Cup, face New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt in Group G.

The Iranians open their World Cup 2026 campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.

FIFA supremo Infantino went into Thursday’s summit with his organization under fire over skyrocketing ticket costs for the World Cup, which one supporters group has branded a “monumental betrayal” of fans.

Infantino brushed off those criticisms in his address, insisting that all revenues from the World Cup, estimated between $11 and $13 billion, would be pumped back into football development.

“There are expensive tickets, yes, (but) there are also affordable tickets,” Infantino said. “And what is important is that all the revenues that we generate from the world go back to the entire world and finance football in all of your countries.”

Infantino’s close ties to US President Trump have also come under scrutiny. Advocacy group Fairsquare filed a formal complaint in December, arguing that Infantino had breached FIFA rules concerning political neutrality by awarding Trump the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize” during last year’s World Cup draw.

However, Infantino received a huge boost to his hopes of securing re-election as the head of world football on Thursday after receiving pledges of support from the African and Asian regional confederations.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have both said they will back Infantino if, as expected, he stands for a fourth term in 2027.

The African and Asian confederations account for 101 votes in FIFA’s presidential election out of a total of 211.

Infantino has already secured support for re-election from South American football’s ruling body CONMEBOL, which is worth a further 10 votes.

Iran will play World Cup 2026 matches in USA: FIFA president Infantino

FIFA president Gianni Infantino told AFP on Tuesday that Iran “will be at the World Cup” and will play their group matches in the United States of America (USA) as scheduled, despite the Middle East war.

“Iran will be at the World Cup,” Infantino said at half-time as Iran beat Costa Rica 5-0 in a friendly in southern Turkey. “That’s why we’re here. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy.”

“I’ve seen the team, I’ve spoken to the players and the coach, so everything is fine,” added Infantino, whose attendance at Tuesday’s game was unannounced.

Infantino went on to stress that Iran’s “matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw”.

The World Cup, being hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, starts on June 11.

Iran are set to play their first Group G game against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. They are then scheduled to play Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

Iran’s participation had been thrown into doubt by the war with the USA and Israel that broke out on February 28.

“For us, what matters most are FIFA’s rules and regulations. We will comply with whatever FIFA decides. Every host country has made commitments to FIFA and must honour them,” Mehdi Mohammad Nabi, the vice president of the Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI), told AFP at the match.

The FFIRI had said earlier this month it was “negotiating” with FIFA to relocate the country’s World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also said that her country is prepared to host Iran’s first-round matches at the tournament if needed.

Infantino initially said that US President Donald Trump had given assurances that the Iranian team would still be welcome. But Trump then stated that Iran’s team should not travel to the tournament “for their own life and safety”.

Iran hit back at Trump’s comments, saying that “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup”.

On Tuesday, Mohammad Nabi said Infantino had been en route from Mexico to Qatar.

“Having learnt that we were organising friendly matches here, he came to see us in person, and we had a fruitful discussion,” Mohammad Nabi said.

“Given our history in this competition, it is only natural that FIFA should support the Iranian team. Mr Infantino is providing the necessary support to our national team and has given our players a great boost.”

Asked before the game if Iran would be at the World Cup, back-up striker Dennis Eckert Ayensa told AFP: “Inshallah” (god willing).

Iran, who also played a friendly against Nigeria in the Turkish town of Belek last Friday, crushed Costa Rica, who have not qualified for the World Cup 2026, 5-0 on Tuesday.

Skipper Mehdi Taremi, with two penalties, Ali Gholizadeh and Mohammad Mohebbi put Iran four goals up by the break. Half-time substitute Mehdi Ghayedi added a fifth in the 51st minute, by which time coach Amir Ghalenoei had started to empty his bench.

Before the game, Iran’s players wore black armbands and posed with photos of what officials said were young victims of the war, including those killed in an airstrike on a primary school in Iran on the first day of the conflict.

USA rout Netherlands to secure first win of T20 World Cup 2026

CHENNAI: Saiteja Mukkamalla’s 79 and Harmeet Singh’s four-wicket haul powered USA to a big 93-run win over the Netherlands here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the 21st fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Set a daunting 197, the Netherlands were skittled for 103 in 15.5 overs.

Michael Levitt was dismissed early in a big chase as the Netherlands were 9-1 in 1.1 overs.

After an early wicket, Max O’Dowd and Bas de Leede added 32 run partnership to put the chase back on track.

O’Dowd made 13 from 11 before getting caught, a wicket that sparked a collapse that the Netherlands could not recover from.

The Netherlands innings quickly unraveled as they slumped from 45-3 to 75-6 in 10 overs.

The wickets continued to tumbled and they were eventually bowled out before completing their overs.

Bas de Leede was the top-scorer with 23 off 17, hitting a six and four.

For USA, it was Shadley van Schalkwyk among the wickets again as he picked up a three wicket haul. Beside him, Harmeet Singh was the other bowler who impressed with his wickets.

Earlier, asked to bat first, USA racked up 196-6 in their 20 overs.

Shayan Jahangir and skipper Monank Patel were off to a flyer with 27 on the board in 2.5 overs.

Kyle Klein provided the Dutch first breakthrough in the form of Jahangir’s wicket, who made 20 off 14, striking two sixes and a boundary.

With the Netherlands 27 for one, Saiteja Mukkamalla arrived at the crease and forged 55 run partnership with Patel to drive USA’s innings.

The pair batted briskly, bringing the team’s total to 82 in nine overs. However, the stand was eventually broken with Patel’s wicket, who made 36 from 22 balls, including a six and three fours.

After his wicket, Saiteja Mukkamalla anchored the chase. The right-hand top-scored for USA with 79 from 51 balls, striking four sixes and four boundaries.

The other notable contribution was from Shubham Ranjane, who made a quick-fire 48 off 24, including two sixes and three fours.

For the Netherlands, Bas de Leede returned with the figures of 3/37 in his four overs.

T20 World Cup: Farhan, Tariq star in Pakistan victory over USA

COLOMBO: Sahibazada Farhan’s gutsy half-century and Usman Tariq’s three-wicket haul helped Pakistan beat the USA in the 12th fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 here at the Sinhaleese Sports Club on Tuesday.

Set stiff 191, USA fell short by 32 runs despite Shubham Ranjane’s valiant half-century.

USA openers started positively with a 42 run parntership in 4.5 overs.

Andries Gous struck two boundaries before getting caught for 13. Meanwhile, Shayan Jahangir played briskly and took USA to a good score at the end of the PowerPlay.

However, the momentum shifted once fielding restrictions were lifted, as Pakistan’s spinners tightened the screws to slow down USA.

The pressure reaped high rewards in the form of skipper Monank Patel and Shayan Jahangir’s wickets. Patel managed only three while Jahangir departed for a well-made 49 from 34 balls, striking two sixes and five fours.

At this stage USA were 69-3 in 10.2 overs as Milind Kumar and Shubham Ranjane came to the fore.

The pair put on a 54-run partnership from 35 balls, with Ranjane playing the core aggressor’s role. However, the asking rate creeping up, it was not going to be an easy task for USA batters.

Consequently, USA fell wickets at regular intervals despite Ranjane reaching his half-century.

He was eventually trapped lbw in the final over, scoring 51 from 30 balls, striking three sixes and three fours.

Usman Tariq remained the pick of bowlers for Pakistan, returning with the figures of 3/27 in four overs.

Earlier, Sahibazada Farhan, Babar Azam, and a late cameo from Shadab Khan took Pakistan to a strong total.

Asked to bat first, Pakistan piled up 190-9 in their 20 overs.

Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan provided a strong start with a 54-run partnership in 5.1 overs.

However, USA quickly turned the momentum back with back-to-back wickets. Saim was the first to go, scoring 19 from 17 with the help of two sixes. The second one was skipper Salman Ali Agha, losing his wicket on the final ball of the powerplay.

The right-hander only managed one from three balls.

As a result, Pakistan were 56 at the end of the powerplay with Babar Azam and Sahibzada Farhan at the crease.

The pair launched a recovery as USA bowled a few tight overs to restrict the new batter Babar Azam from going big.

Pakistan’s scorecard read 85-2 at the halfway mark of the innings.

After a slowdown, Sahibzada and Babar soon took advantage of Harmeet Singh’s 12th over. The pair accumulated 21 runs from the over to boost the run-rate and took the score from 101 to 122.

Babar Azam finally finds his groove, hitting six and two boundaries in the over to take his runs tally to 32.

However, USA made a comeback in the 15th over as Babar departed after scoring 46 from 32 balls. In the next over, Harmeet nabbed Farhan as USA made a strong comeback.

Sahibzad top-scored with 73 from 41 balls, laced with six fours and five sixes.

Consequently, Pakistan were reduced to 145-4 in 16 overs.

After a brief slowdown, Shadab Khan played a blinder to lift their hopes of reaching the 200-run mark. He made 30 off just 12 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.

USA bowled well in the final two overs as Pakistan slumped from 177-5 to 190-9 at the end of their innings.

For USA, Shadley van Schalkwyk remained the standout bowler with four wickets to his name.

T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan-born pacer Ehsan Adil included in USA squad

COLOMBO: The United States of America (USA) have drafted Pakistan-born fast bowler Ehsan Adil into their squad ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 encounter against the Green Shirts, following an injury setback in the camp.

Adil replaces right-arm pacer Jasdeep Singh, who was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a right shoulder injury during a warm-up fixture against New Zealand on February 5.

The Event Technical Committee (ETC) of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup approved Adil’s inclusion, a mandatory requirement for any mid-tournament replacement.

The 32-year-old seamer previously represented Pakistan in three Tests and six One Day Internationals but is yet to make his international debut for the USA.

His addition is expected to bolster the American pace attack ahead of a crucial phase of the tournament.

The ETC overseeing the approval process comprises ICC General Manager – Cricket Wasim Khan, IBC representative Gaurav Saxena, host representative Hemang Amin and independent member Shaun Pollock.

Meanwhile, the USA are coming off a 29-run defeat against India in their opening match at the Wankhede Stadium.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav’s fighting half-century, combined with a disciplined bowling display, proved decisive as the Americans fell short in their chase.

Pursuing a target of 162, the USA managed 132 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs despite showing glimpses of resistance.
