ICC World Cup 2023: Babar Azam scores first ODI fifty against India

AHMEDABAD: Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Saturday, scored his maiden ODI half-century against arch-rivals India in the high-octane ICC World Cup 2023 fixture.

Babar had a dismal record against India in ODIs, having scored only 168 runs in seven innings with a dismal average of 28.

Coming out to bat at number three after young opener Abdullah Shafique was removed by right-arm lanky pacer Mohammed Siraj in the eighth over, Babar Azam soon adapted to the conditions and scored with ease.

The right-handed batter put together an important 82-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan and amassed the milestone in the process.

He reached his half-century in just 57 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and ended a five-match streak without a fifty-plus score.

Babar Azam was eventually cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj on the next delivery to mark India’s comeback.

For the unversed, Babar’s first appearance against India in ODIs was in the group-stage fixture of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and he could score a mere eight.

In the blockbuster final of the tournament, he scored 46 in Pakistan’s historic 180-run victory over India.

Babar scored in the forties twice against India in the 2018 Asia Cup and was dismissed for 48 by Kuldeep Yadav during the 2019 World Cup.

In the recently-held Asia Cup 2023, Babar Azam was castled Hardik Pandya on 10, the last meeting of the two-arch rivals in the fifty-over format.

In T20Is, however, Babar Azam has thus far accumulated 92 runs in four innings with the best score of 68 not out.

Notably, when this story was filed Pakistan were reeling at 172/7 in 36 overs with Hasan Ali (1) and Mohammad Nawaz (2) at the crease.

Babar Azam’s Pakistan eye history in ICC World Cup 2023 in India

The much-anticipated moment for Pakistan cricket fans arrives tomorrow (Friday) as Babar Azam-led Pakistan begin their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign against the Netherlands at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

Since arriving in the city eight days ago, which also marked the first instance of a Pakistan men’s side landing in India in seven years, the Babar Azam’s side has made the most of the training sessions and two warm-up games to acclimatise in the city where they play first two of their nine league matches.

The warm-up games against New Zealand and Australia also served opportunities to Pakistan to fine-tune their combinations and provide the much-needed match time to the entire squad.

“We have been in Hyderabad for a week and our preparations have been really good,” Babar told PCB Digital on the eve of Pakistan’s tournament opener.

“We have had two practice matches in which we tried different combinations and gave everyone an opportunity to see if they could play in any situation. Overall our practice went well and we will give our best.”

Pakistan enter the 50-over World Cup as one of the favourites after an impressive run in the just-concluded World Cup cycle as they had the best win-loss ratio of 2.400 with 24 wins in 36 matches.

That the team has performed so consistently has also been because of their mainstays emerging as solid performers over the years.

Their captain, Babar Azam, has evolved into a modern-day great since recording the most runs for a Pakistani at a World Cup in the 2019 iteration and is perched at the top of the ICC ODI rankings for batters.

He is one of the two players to score over 2,000 runs in the last four years. His impressive 2,196 runs have been at an average of 66.54 and a strike rate of 93.72.

He has smashed nine centuries in this period, which is the joint-most with Shai Hope, who is the other batter to breach the 2,000-run mark.

Babar Azam’s compatriot Imam-ul-Haq is ranked sixth with 1,284 runs at an average of 45.85 and a strike rate of 84.41. He has struck two centuries and 13 half-centuries in the past four years.

Shaheen Afridi, who became the youngest bowler to bag a five-wicket haul in his last ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup contest, has emerged as one of the most-feared bowlers in the game.

Such has been his impact in the format that despite being on the sidelines for around seven months because of a knee injury, Shaheen has been one of the key bowlers in the vaunted Pakistan’s pace attack.

He has 46 wickets in the last four years at 25.26 and with an impressive economy of 5.42.

In between the two editions, Pakistan continued to produce exciting fast-bowling talents. Haris Rauf, who debuted in October 2020, has made a name for himself by producing excellent spells in arguably the hardest phase of the ODI game – the middle overs.

He surpassed the 50-wicket mark in the recent Men’s ODI Asia Cup 2023 and has 53 scalps to his name, but the most fascinating bit of his bowling has been the economy, which has been 5.68.

“Both bowling and batting are our strengths,” Babar Azam replied when asked what he felt his side’s strengths are.

“Our batters have been performing from the top-order down to the lower-order. Every player is stepping up and taking responsibility. In bowling, our fast bowling has always been our strength but even our spinners are showing promise.

“Since we have come to India, we have seen our spinners take wickets in the middle overs, which is a good sign. We will try and keep this momentum going.”

When Pakistan take on the Netherlands on Friday, it will be the first time in a little less than 11 years that they will play an ODI on Indian soil.

They have not played a single 50-over international game in Hyderabad since 1987, but the team has made sure that they have all preparations in place for the mega-event.

“As far as my experience goes, and having watched matches in India on television, I’ll say the pitches seem really good. Matches are going to be high scoring.

As for the boundaries, they are normal-sized, not too small but not too big either. The pitches are true – sometimes you need a little more time (as a batter) early on (in the game), but once you play on it for a while it feels really good.

“There is not much margin for the bowlers as they have to keep their lines wicket-to-wicket and deploy variations. If they err in lines, then the batters are going to make the most of it.”

Speaking about his last four years, Babar Azam said, “My journey has been really good. There have been ups and downs, which is natural. There have been challenges at times, but I have tried to live up to the expectations of the fans.

“I have met a lot of good people in the process. I met some very good teammates and was able to forge a bond with them. It has been three years since I have been playing with these boys so we have bonded well in this time.

“At the end of the day, we spend more time with each other than we get to spend with our families. We try to be happy with each other’s performance and try to give our best for Pakistan.”

Recalling the Pakistan team’s reception at the Hyderabad airport last week, Babar expressed his gratitude towards the Indian people who have turned up in numbers to greet his side, and expressed hope that he will soon see the Pakistan fans across the country in the ICC World Cup 2023 cheering their side.

“We weren’t expecting such a reception, to be honest. Many people showed up at the airport when we arrived here. They cheered for us and showed us support. A large crowd turned up in the last match.

“They seemed to really enjoy the game and they showed support for some of their favourite players. So it feels nice. I feel if we would have Pakistani fans here, it will feel even better.”

The Friday meeting between Pakistan and the Netherlands would be the seventh time they face off in an ODI.

The two sides have faced off six times in the format, their first meeting in the 1996 iteration of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, and Pakistan have come out victorious on each occasion.

Pakistan toured the Netherlands last year for what was the first bilateral series between the two sides and recorded a clean sweep.

Zaka Ashraf opens up on Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan captain

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf on Saturday, shared his views on whether Babar Azam would remain Pakistan’s captain after the ICC World Cup 2023.

Babar Azam’s captaincy often came under questioning, the recent example of which was following Pakistan’s dismal performance in the recently-held Asia Cup 2023.

He was criticized for his approach, bowling options and field settings in the continental tournament.

The cricket fans and former players had lambasted the batter, accusing him of selecting players for the major tournaments on the basis of their friendships.

Meanwhile, PCB head Zaka Ashraf appeared on the ARY News show Bouncer and talked about the country’s cricketing affairs and other aspects of the game.

When asked what was Babar Azam’s future as Pakistan captain after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, the PCB Chairman said the right-handed batter is a prolific cricketer and was impressed with his skills.

He urged the Pakistan Cricket Team to give their all in their bid for the second 50-over title, adding that the management back home will sit with the skipper and devise a strategy to overcome the shortcomings.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan suffered a setback before the ICC World Cup 2023 began as they lost their first warmup game to New Zealand by five wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday.

Babar Azam’s side will now take on five-time champions Australia on October 3 in their second warm-up game of the World Cup.

They begin their quest for the World Cup on October 6th when they take on the Netherlands at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Babar Azam retains top ODI ranking despite Shubman Gill’s threat

DUBAI: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam retained his position at the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, while Indian batter Shubman Gill further closed the gap.

Babar Azam will enter the ICC World Cup 2023 as the number-one ODI batter after Shubman Gill rested for India’s final clash of their ODI series against Australia.

However, both the batters will battle for the top spot throughout the World Cup as Gill (847) is just 10 rating points behind Azam (857), while third-ranked Rassie van der Dussen is way behind with 743 points.

Shubman Gill continued his brilliant form in the first two matches of the ODI series against Australia, amassing a total of 178 runs for the series during the opening two contests. Prior to that, he topped the runs chart in the Asia Cup 2023 with 302 runs in six matches at 75.50.

Meanwhile, Indian fast bowler Mohammad Siraj maintains a narrow lead at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings with 680 rating points over Australian Josh Hazlewood (669), followed by Afghanistan’s spin bowling duo Mujeeb Ur Rahman (657) and Rashid Khan (655).

Mohammad Siraj rocketed to the summit of bowler’s rankings after he wreaked havoc on Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup with figures of 6-21. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 10 wickets, behind Matheesha Pathirana’s tally of 11 wickets.

India’s Mohammed Shami has improved his position by nine spots and is now ranked joint 25th with Jofra Archer. Similarly, Australian seamer Sean Abbott has moved up by 14 places and is now joint 45th in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman jumped five spots and is currently at 23rd after bagging five wickets in the ODI series against New Zealand.

ICC World Cup 2023: Babar Azam asks nation for prayers

LAHORE: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam has asked the nation for their prayers as the squad heads to India to participate in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Babar Azam wrote in his post on X (formerly known as Twitter): “As we head for the World Cup, we seek prayers of all the Pakistan cricket team fans and well-wishers. I am certain that you will continue to extend your support and love, which you have always done. Pakistan Zindabad.”

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan contingent departed from Lahore airport with a layover in Dubai before reaching their final destination at Hyderabad, India tonight, where they will take on New Zealand on September 29 in their first warm-up fixture of the ICC World Cup 2023.

This delay prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to record its protest by writing a letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Babar-led Pakistan will start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6 in Hyderabad, the same venue at which they will play their warm-up fixtures against New Zealand and Australia.

Babar Azam aims to leave Asia Cup behind to win ICC World Cup 2023

LAHORE: Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam on Tuesday, intended to learn from the mistakes made in Asia Cup 2023 and to give the best to win the ICC World Cup 2023 in India.

Babar Azam, while speaking at a press conference ahead of Pakistan’s departure for India, admitted that Pakistan did not play at their best in Asia Cup 2023, however, the team intends to improve.

“We could not deliver the way we should have, but we have learnt from our mistakes, as individuals and as a team. We have discussed all our mistakes as a team with the support staff,” he said.

“Asia Cup was a different tournament, the World Cup is entirely different in different conditions, so we will plan accordingly and give our best to win the World Cup,” he further added.

The 28-year-old batter also backed Pakistan’s squad for ICC World Cup 2023 amid criticism over the form of some players.

“I believe in my team more than myself. I know my players, they are capable of winning matches singlehandedly,” said Babar Azam. “These are the same players who helped Pakistan become the number-one team. I know they will give their best in the World Cup.”

He also showed confidence in vice-captain Shadab Khan and allrounder Mohammad Nawaz, who failed to live up to the mark in the Asia Cup.

“Our spinners have had a few bad days but they are not ordinary players. They have reached here on the back of their performances and I have full faith in them going into the World Cup.”

Babar Azam has represented Pakistan in 106 ODI matches, however, he will be playing in India for the first, like most of his teammates. He shared his excitement of playing in front of the Indian crowd.

“I am excited to play in Ahmedabad as it is the biggest stadium in the world and will be jam-packed,” he said. “I will try my best to perform up to my potential. However, I am not worried about my individual accolades, I want to make sure whatever I do helps the result for the team.”

He also urged Pakistans to support and pray for the team.

“The morale of the team is high and we are very confident. We will try to come back with the World Cup, we request you all to back us and pray for us.”

Pakistan’s contingent will depart for India in the wee hours of Wednesday and will reach Hyderabad via Dubai on Wednesday night.

Babar Azam can set the World Cup on fire: Gautam Gambhir

Former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir picked Pakistan’s all-format captain and top-ranked ODI batter Babar Azam amongst the top batters, to watch out for in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India.

Gautam Gambhir was asked to pick one out of the current top batters — David Warner, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Babar Azam, Joe Root and Rohit Sharma — whom he will have his eyes on at the ICC World Cup 2023.

India’s World Cup-winning opener Gambhir replied: “Babar Azam”.

“I think Babar Azam possesses all kinds of qualities that he can set this World Cup on fire,” Gautam Gambhir said.

“I have not seen many players who have so much time to play. Yes, I believe that we have greats like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Joe Root, but Babar Azam has a different level of quality,” he added.

After making his international debut in 2015, Babar soon emerged as the top batter for Pakistan and has been ruling the white-ball formats since then, especially ODIs.

Babar’s astoundingly consistent run in the ODIs lifted him to dethrone his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli as the top-ranked ODI batter in April 2021 and was also named the ODI player of the year for two consecutive years.

The right-handed batter has spent around 900 days at the top of the ODI Batting Rankings and is likely to enter the ICC World Cup 2023 as the top-ranked batter with only India’s Shubman Gill being a major threat.

Babar-led Pakistan will start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6 in Hyderabad, the same venue at which they will play their warm-up fixtures against New Zealand and Australia.

Wedding festivities of Shaheen Shah, Ansha Afridi begin

The wedding festivities of Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi and daughter of veteran cricketer, Ansha Shahid Afridi started in full swing.

Shaheen Shah Afridi is all set to take his bride Ansha home tonight and their pre-wedding festivities started last night with an intimate mehndi gathering at the Afridi house in Karachi last night.

The glittering ceremony was also attended by Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam.

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s wedding ceremony also saw the presence of cricket stars such as Misbah-ul-Haq, Saeed Anwar, Tanveer Ahmed, and Sohail Khan.

The celebrated cricketer, Shahid Afridi hosted a private dinner at his place on Monday night, a day before he weds off his daughter with Shaheen tonight, for both the families.

The videos and pictures from the gathering are going viral on social media, raising the anticipation of fans to see their favourite cricketer and his wife in their bride and groom looks.

It is pertinent to mention that the wedding invites of the couple went viral on social media earlier this month, which confirmed that the rukhsati ceremony of Ansha will take place in Karachi on Tuesday, September 19 (tonight), while Shaheen’s family will host the Walima reception in the capital on September 21.

For the unversed, the left-arm fast bowler got engaged to the second eldest daughter of the former skipper of the national cricket team, Ansha Shahid in 2021, as confirmed by both families.

The duo got nikkahfied in a private affair in February this year, attended by close friends, family and teammates.

Pakistan men’s cricket team, under the leadership of Babar Azam, will now participate in the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 in India, scheduled to commence on October 5.

Pakistan will start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on October 6 and will play at least a total of 11 matches including two warm-up fixtures against New Zealand and Australia.

The top four teams by the end of the group stage will qualify for the semi-finals.
