UAE stun Bangladesh in historic win to level T20I series in Sharjah

SHARJAH: A blistering knock from skipper Muhammad Waseem helped the United Arab Emirates (UAE) script history here on Monday as they defeated Bangladesh for the first time ever in international cricket.

The hosts clinched a thrilling two-wicket win in the second T20I at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, levelling the three-match series 1-1.

Chasing a daunting 206, the UAE got home with just one ball to spare, thanks to a captain’s knock from Waseem, who smashed 82 off just 42 deliveries, laced with nine fours and five towering sixes.

His fearless strokeplay up top gave the hosts belief, but when he fell in the 15th over with 58 still required, the game was hanging in the balance.

But the UAE middle order showed nerves of steel. Haider Ali, with an unbeaten 16, saw the team through, sneaking a couple off the penultimate delivery after Towhid Hridoy misfielded a potential run-out chance.

Earlier, Bangladesh put up a strong total of 205/5 after being asked to bat by the UAE.

Tanzid Hasan led the charge with a fluent 59 off 33, while skipper Litton Das played the anchor with 40 off 32.

The pair added 90 for the first wicket before Towhid Hridoy added late fireworks with a brisk 45 off 24.

Muhammad Jawadullah starred with the ball for the hosts, claiming 3/45, while Saghir Khan chipped in with two important scalps.

In reply, the UAE’s batting revolved around Waseem’s brilliance. The right-hander attacked from ball one, putting the Bangladesh bowlers under immense pressure.

Even after his departure, the lower middle order held its nerve to complete one of UAE’s most memorable victories in their cricketing history.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain, Nahid Rana, and Shoriful Islam picked two wickets apiece, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Tanvir Islam managed one each.

With the series now level at 1-1, the third and final T20I between Bangladesh and UAE on Wednesday at the same venue promises to be a high-stakes decider.

Bangladesh add one more T20I to UAE series ahead of Pakistan tour

Bangladesh will play an additional T20I in the series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ahead of the Pakistan tour.

The third T20I between Bangladesh and the UAE will be played on 21 May in Sharjah. Initially, the series consisted of two T20 Internationals.

In the light of the recent developments, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made this decision due to the uncertainty surrounding the Pakistan tour.

The rationale behind requesting Emirates Cricket Board for an additional T20I is that BCB wants to keep their team in the UAE, this enabling them to travel to Pakistan as planned.

Addtionally, Bangladesh had planned the series against UAE to prepare for the five-match series against Pakistan, which was originally scheduled to commence on 25 May.

However, the escalation between India and Pakistan prompted the disruption of the calendar. The Pakistan Super League, which was initially postponed, returned with the final on 25 May.

According to ESPN Cricinfo, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sent the BCB a new draft schedule, which had the first T20I on May 27 and the last on June 5.

For the unversed, Bangladesh outplayed UAE in the first T20I by 27 runs, courtesy of Parvez Hossain Emon’s century.

Put into bat, Bangladesh posted 191-7 in their allocated 20 overs. UAE, in reply, crumbled under pressure and were bowled out on 164 runs on the penultimate ball of the innings.

For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud was the stand-out bowler, taking three for 33 in his quota of four overs, while Parvez Hossain Emon was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his sublime century.

Shaun Tait appointed as Bangladesh’s pace bowling coach

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait as the fast bowling coach until November 2027.

Adams, the former New Zealand pacer, is stepping down from the role well before his two-year contract, signed in February 2024, was set to expire.

According to Bangladesh media, the decision to part ways was mutual between Adams and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), though the exact reasons behind his early departure remain under wraps.

Adams had taken over the role following Allan Donald’s exit after the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

While his appointment initially generated optimism, his tenure has come to an end just 15 months in, opening the door for a familiar name to return to the international coaching circuit.

In an official statement, BCB shared the details of Tait’s contract.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is pleased to announce the appointment of former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait as the Pace Bowling Coach of the Bangladesh National Team. The 42-year-old will join the team setup later this month, having agreed to terms with the BCB on a contract that runs until November 2027,” the BCB said in a statement.

Shaun Tait expressed excitement at joining the Bangladesh team, praising the country’s fast bowlers.

‘It’s a good time to be involved with the Bangladesh cricket team right now, a bit of a new era if you like. It’s been spoken about many times recently—the young talent with the fast bowlers, which is great,” he said.

The 42-year-old emphasised result result-oriented approach, stressing wins for the team.

‘This is international cricket, not a development team, and everyone expects the talent to bring results, which is very much my focus with the fast bowling group and most importantly, getting more wins for the team,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that, Tait also has considerable experience in franchise cricket, including a recent stint with Karachi Kings during the postponed PSL season 10 and a previous role as head coach of the Chittagong Kings in the BPL.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Tait has been linked with Bangladesh. He had previously applied for the same role during an earlier recruitment cycle but withdrew his candidacy at the last moment.

Former Pakistan coach likely to become Bangladesh’s bowling coach

Bangladesh are likely to bring in former Pakistan fast-bowling coach Shaun Tait as their new pace bowling coach, replacing Andre Adams.

Shaun Tait has now emerged as the frontrunner to replace Adams. The former Australian speedster is no stranger to subcontinental cricket, having worked as Pakistan’s bowling coach and later serving in a consultancy role with Afghanistan.

Tait also has considerable experience in franchise cricket, including a recent stint with Karachi Kings during the postponed PSL season 10 and a previous role as head coach of the Chittagong Kings in the BPL.

However, talks reportedly resumed during the recent BPL season, and significant progress has been made toward finalising his appointment this time around.

An official announcement from the BCB is expected soon as Bangladesh prepare for a brief tour of the UAE, where they’ll play two T20Is in Sharjah on May 17 and 19.

PCB, BCB in talks amid uncertainty over Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been engaged in active discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for Bangladesh’s upcoming white-ball tour of Pakistan later this month.

The tensions between India and Pakistan reached fever-pitch following an attack last month in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) town of Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists.

However, the situation returned to normal after an immediate ceasefire on Saturday, following days of deadly jet fighter, missile, drone and artillery attacks.

In a statement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board emphasized the safety and security of its players as the board’s foremost priority.

“The BCB wishes to reiterate that the safety and security of its players and support staff remain the Board’s highest priority,” the board said in an official statement on Saturday.

“All decisions concerning the tour will be made with careful consideration of the current situation in Pakistan, ensuring they align with the best interests of the team and Bangladesh cricket,” it added.

It is pertinent to mention that Bangladesh are scheduled to head to Pakistan on 21 May for a five-match T20I series. However, the tensions between India and Pakistan have cast doubt on this tour.

Bangladesh will play across two venues in Pakistan, Faisalabad and Lahore. Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad will stage the first and second T20Is of the series, scheduled.

The Bangladesh team is set to travel to Dubai later this week for a two-match T20I series.

Nahid Rana and Rishad Hossain, both part of PSL 10, returned home on Friday after the league’s indefinite postponement.

Both players will leave for the UAE with the rest of the Bangladesh squad on Wednesday.

However, Rishad and Nahid will be unavailable if the PSL resumes, mainly due to Bangladesh’s international commitments.

BCB adopts wait-and-watch approach on Pakistan T20I series amid regional tensions

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has adopted a cautious stance regarding its upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan, originally scheduled to begin on May 25, as tensions in the region continue to unfold.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, the BCB confirmed that it is actively coordinating with both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad to ensure the safety of its players currently participating in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.

Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain (Lahore Qalandars) and pacer Nahid Rana (Peshawar Zalmi) are the two players currently involved in the PSL.

“The BCB is in active coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to guarantee the security of our players,” the board stated in a release.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed, while speaking to a local sports outlet, said the board was closely monitoring the evolving situation and would wait a few more days before taking a final decision on the tour.

“We are really working on the current situation (as far as going to Pakistan for the T20I series), and it can wait for another three to four days,” said Faruque.

“Let’s see how it progresses, but at the moment our main concern is regarding the two players (Nahid Rana and Rishad Hossain) who are currently in Pakistan playing in the PSL.”

Despite the uncertainty, it’s worth noting that the BCB has already announced a 16-member squad for both the UAE and Pakistan T20I series, naming Litton Das as captain. Mahedi Hasan has been appointed vice-captain.

They are first set to travel to the United Arab Emirates for a short T20I series, with two matches scheduled in Sharjah on May 17 and 19. The five-match T20I series in Pakistan is, for now, set to run from May 25 to June 3.

New T20I captain named as Bangladesh announce squad for UAE, Pakistan tour

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday named wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das as the captain of a 16-member T20I squad for the upcoming tours of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan.

The decision to name Litton as captain came after Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down earlier this year.

Litton Das captained Bangladesh in a T20I series last year against the West Indies in Shanto’s absence due to an injury.

The wicket-keeper batter has led Bangladesh in one Test, seven ODIs, and four T20Is. However, this is the first time that he has been named full-time captain in any format.

The 30-year-old was also part of the Karachi Kings squad in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, but he was ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury.

Meanwhile, Mahedi Hasan has been named as vice-captain for the series.

It is pertinent to mention that Bangladesh will play a two-match T20I series against the UAE in Sharjah on May 17 and 19.

Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium will host the remaining three T20Is, scheduled on 30 May, 1 and 3 June. All five matches will begin at 8pm (Pakistan Standard Time).

Bangladesh thrash Zimbabwe by an innings to level Test series

CHATTOGRAM: Bangladesh thrashed Zimbabwe by an innings and 106 runs inside four days of the second Test to level the two-match series here at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Wednesday.

Zimbabwe scored 227 in their first innings after winning the toss, with Bangladesh scoring a formidable 444 in response.

The visitors then collapsed for 111 in the second session of the third day in Chattogram.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz starred with both bat and ball, scoring a century and then bagging 5-32 with the ball to hand Zimbabwe a crushing defeat.

It was the all-rounder’s third five-wicket haul of the series after five in each innings of the Sylhet Test.

Craig Ervine (25) and Wellington Masakadza (10) were the only other Zimbabweans to reach double digits in the second innings.

Shadman Islam earlier top-scored for Bangladesh with 120 to power the hosts to an imposing total.

Leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa was the most successful among the Zimbabwe bowlers with 5-115, in the process becoming Zimbabwe’s third cricketer to take five wickets on debut after Andy Blignaut and John Nyumbu.

Bangladesh added 153 more to their overnight total of 291, with Mehidy assisted by tailenders Taijul (20 off 45) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (41 off 80).

It was Zimbabwe’s second successive defeat at the spin-friendly venue and the second time that Bangladesh have defeated Zimbabwe by an innings.
