Pakistan crush Bangladesh in Hockey World Cup qualifier opener

DHAKA: Pakistan outplayed Bangladesh 8-2 in the opening game of the three-match series here at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

The series serves as a platform for a spot in the FIH 2026 Hockey World Cup Qualifiers.

The Green Shirts started strong as captain Ammad Butt pierced one through the nets in the fourth minute of the game, courtesy of a penalty corner.

However, the hosts made a comeback at the stroke of the first quarter, with Hozifa Hossain scoring the equalizer.

Pakistan showcased its dominance and replied with another goal in four minutes to take the lead. This time, it was Nadeem Ahmed who struck through the nets.

The visitors continued to dominate and ended the second quarter with a 4-1 lead.

Pakistan effectively controlled possession, enabling them to add four more goals to their tally. Ghazanfar Ali, Waheed Ashraf Rana, and Hannan Shahid each contributed one goal, while Nadeem scored his second.

Bangladesh found the back of the net in the 58th minute with a goal from Amirul Islam. However, they were unable to close the gap, and Pakistan secured a comfortable victory in the match.

It is noteworthy to mention that the series was initiated by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) after Pakistan was unable to travel to India for the Asia Cup in August and September due to strained political relations between the two neighboring countries.

Bangladesh’s Nahid Rana penalized for Code of Conduct breach

DUBAI: Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct during the second day of the first Test against Ireland at Sylhet.

Rana violated Article 2.9 of the cricket governing body’s Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, the governing body stated.

The article relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”

The ICC stated that Level 1 offences carry a minimum sanction of an official reprimand and can lead to a fine of up to 50 percent of the player’s match fee.

“Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” it said in a statement.

Consequently, Nahid Rana has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point, marking the 23-year-old’s first offense in 24 months.

The incident happened in the 27th over of Ireland’s innings when Rana, in his follow-through, threw the ball back towards Cade Carmichael, which hit him on the pads. The batter, however, did not move off the popping crease.

Rana admitted the offence and accepted the charge proposed by ICC match referee Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Sam Nogajski and Ahsan Raza, alongside third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Tanvir Ahmed.

Nonetheless, Mahmudul Hasan Joy’s highest Test score of 169* demonstrated a commanding performance from Bangladesh on day two against Ireland.

The Tigers ended their day on a high with 338-1, leading by 52 runs after bowling out Ireland for 286 in the opening hours of the day’s play.

Bangladesh thump West Indies to clinch ODI series

MIRPUR: Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan’s gutsy knocks, backed by a clinical bowling performance, powered Bangladesh to a 179-run victory over West Indies in the final ODI of the three-match series here on Thursday.

With this victory, the Tigers won the series 2-1, marking their first after losing four consecutive away series.

Set 297, West Indies batting faltered under pressure and were bowled out for a mere 117 in 30.1 overs.

The visitors’ chase started on a shaky note as they lost their top three batters inside eight overs.

Nasum Ahmed ran through the top-order, trapping Alick Athanaze and Ackeem Auguste for 15 and nought respectively. As a result, West Indies were reduced to 28-2 in 6.2 overs.

Soon after, Nasum castled Brandon King for 18 to put Bangladesh on top of the game.

Following the early hiccups, the visitors’ batting lineup could not handle the slide, with Bangladesh spinners tormenting through the middle-order.

Akeal Hosein remained the top-scorer with 27 from 15, striking four boundaries and a maximum.

For Bangladesh, it was an all-round bowling effort; however, Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain — player of the series, stood out with three wickets each.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Bangladesh racked up 296-8 in their allocated 50 overs.

Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar forged a 176-run partnership for the opening wicket, which set the tone for Bangladesh to finish strong.

Hassan made 81 from 72 balls, studded with half a dozen fours and the same number of sixes, while Sarkar struck seven fours and four maximums on his way to 91 from 81 balls.

For West Indies, Akeal Hosein starred with the ball, picking up four wickets in his quota of 10 overs while giving away 41.

West Indies outclass Bangladesh in thrilling Super Over finish

MIRPUR: Skipper Shai Hope starred as West Indies edged Bangladesh by one run in a thrilling last-ball Super Over finish to level the three-match ODI series 1-1 here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

Set 213 to win on a tricky surface, West Indies managed to level the score at the end of their 50 overs.

However, in the one-off over, Bangladesh fell short of the 11-run target,  losing the match by just one run.

Akeal Hosein was given the responsibility of defending the total in the Super Over. Albeit, he had a sloppy start— which included five runs from his first ball, including a no-ball and a wide, he eventually managed in defending the score.

Shai Hope starred with the bat, scoring a vital 53 from 67 balls laced with four boundaries, which lifted West Indies out of trouble.

West Indies create ODI history with all-spin attack

West Indies have become the first ODI team in history to bowl all 50 overs with spin during the second ODI against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

The former world champions delivered a spin masterclass on Tuesday, bowling all 300 deliveries of spin, and conceded just 207 runs, and claimed seven wickets at the Shere Bangla Stadium.

Remarkably, their only pace option, Justin Greaves, was not used at all.

Previously, the most number of overs or balls bowled in an ODI was by Sri Lanka, who had bowled 44 overs of spin out of 50.

They achieved the same feat thrice, against West Indies in 1996, New Zealand in 1998, and Australia in 2004.

Soumya Sarkar top-scored for Bangladesh with 45 but it was Rishad’s last-gasp effort that gave a decent score on a difficult pitch.

He made an unbeaten 39 off 14 balls with three sixes and as many fours, all of which came in the last 2.1 overs.

He added 50 runs for the unbroken eighth wicket stand with captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was unbeaten on 32 off 58 balls.

Athapaththu conjures miracle to knock Bangladesh out of Women’s World Cup

Sri Lanka snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to record their first win of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, edging out Bangladesh by seven runs in a nerve jangling finish in Navi Mumbai on Monday.

With Bangladesh cruising and only nine needed off the final over with five wickets in hand, having mustered just three runs off the penultimate over, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu took the ball herself and turned the game on its head.

Four wickets tumbled in four balls as Bangladesh collapsed, losing five wickets for just two runs.

Athapaththu, calm amid the storm, finished with career-best figures of 4-42.

The drama began with Rabeya Khan trapped leg-before off the first ball, followed by a run-out next delivery.

Then, Bangladesh’s hopes sank when their captain Nigar Sultana danced down the track only to find long-off lurking.

When Marufa Akter was adjudged lbw next ball, Athapaththu had conjured the unthinkable, defending nine with a single run conceded in the over.

For once, fortune favoured Sri Lanka, whose campaign had been marred by rain, missed chances and misfiring batters.

Hasini Perera, who struck her maiden ODI half-century, made 85 off 99 balls, peppered with 13 fours and a six.

She was the backbone of Sri Lanka’s 202 all out as she reached the milestone of 1,000 runs in ODIs.

A 74-run partnership with Nilakshika de Silva gave Sri Lanka a solid launch pad, before another collapse saw six wickets fall for 28 run.

Even so, the Sri Lankans held their nerve in the death overs to seal the win and climb to sixth in the standings.

With four points, they are level with New Zealand and India, although will need results to go in their favour to grab the last semi-final spot.

Australia, South Africa and England have already booked their places in the last four.

Bangladesh team receive hostile reception after Afghanistan whitewash

DHAKA: Bangladesh cricket team players received a hostile reception at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport following their whitewash against Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series, which concluded on October 14, 2025.

Afghanistan, for the first time, clean-swept an Asian Side during the ODI series played at the United Arab Emirates.

Bangladesh, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, were completely outplayed in the series, losing by five wickets, 80 runs, and 200 runs in the three matches, respectively.

Following the team’s return, the players were booed at the airport, and their vehicles were also attacked, according to Bangladesh player Naim Shaikh, who took to social media and penned down an emotional note.

“We who take the field, we don’t just play – we carry the name of our country on our chest. The red and green flag isn’t just on our bodies; it’s in our blood. With every ball, every run, every breath, we strive to make that flag proud,” he wrote.

“Yes, sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t. Victory comes, defeat comes – that’s the reality of sports. We know that when we lose, it hurts you, angers you – because you love this country just as much as we do.

He further revealed the situation they had faced during their reception at the airport.

“But the way hate was directed at us today, the attacks on our vehicles, that truly hurts. We are humans; we make mistakes, but we never lack love or effort for our country. Every moment, we try for the country, for the people, to bring a smile to your faces.

“We want love, not hate. Let criticism come with reason, not anger. Because we are all children of the same flag. Whether we win or lose – may the red and green always be a source of pride for all of us, not anger.

“We will fight, and we will rise again – for the country, for you, for this flag,” Naim Shaikh concluded.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has urged players to refrain from using social media to respond to critics.

Simmons, ahead of the West Indies series, shed light on the matter and said that the players in an individual capacity are allowed to express their views; however, they should avoid doing so as a Bangladesh player.

“It is your right as a person to be on social media, to say what you want on social media. But as an international player, as a national player for Bangladesh, my players should not be on there,” Phil Simmons said.
