Devine, Halliday hand New Zealand first win at Women’s World Cup

GUWAHATI: Skipper Sophie Devine’s and Brooke Halliday’s composed half-centuries, followed by a clinical bowling performance, sealed a comprehensive 100-run victory over Bangladesh in the ICC Women’s World Cup here at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Set 229, Bangladesh were bowled out for a mere 127 in 39.5 overs.

New Zealand inflicted a poor start on Bangladesh as they removed openers Rubya Haider and Sharmin Akhter for four and three runs respectively.

The early wickets did not allow Bangladesh’s middle-order batters to settle as BlackCaps bowlers cut through the batting lineup.

Fahima Khatun top-scored with 34 from 80 balls with the help of two fours. She was the highlight of Bangladesh’s innings, adding a string of partnerships later down the order, which helped them cross the 100-run mark.

Eventually, New Zealand bowled them out for a modest score, resulting in their first victory of the tournament.

For the Blackcaps, Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu picked up three wickets each.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, New Zealand posted 227-9 in their 50 overs, thanks to Devine and Halliday’s 112-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Bangladesh kept it tight from the start, leaving them reeling at 38-3 in 11 overs. However, the duo’s partnership drove New Zealand and helped them reach a respectable total.

Devine made 63 from 85, striking two sixes and two fours, whereas Halliday struck five fours and a six on her way to 69 from 104 balls.

For Bangladesh, Rabeya Khan remained the standout bowler, picking up three wickets in her quota of 10 overs while giving away 30 runs.

Women’s World Cup: Knight helps England survive Bangladesh scare

GUWAHATI: On a day when England needed somebody to stand tall, Heather Knight rose to the occasion with a gritty unbeaten 79* run that helped them overcome a spirited Bangladesh challenge in the eighth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 here at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

England eventually managed to chase down a partly 179-run target, huffing and puffing to victory by four wickets with 23 balls to spare.

The Three Lions started the chase on a shaky note as opener Amy Jones was trapped lbw after scoring one in the first over.

Bangladesh dealt the second blow in the form of Tammy Beaumont as Marufa Akter got her second wicket. As a result, England were 29-2 in 6.1 overs.

The tigers continued to mount pressure with tight bowling; however, Heather Knight stood in their way. She formed a string of vital partnerships that eventually saw them over the line.

First, she added a 40-run stand with Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored 32 from 41 balls with the help of five fours.

Bangladesh had a hold of the match with a double strike in the 18th over. Brunt and Dunkley were removed for nought in quick succession. The slide continued as two more wickets fell in a short span of time.

Consequently, England were reduced to 103-6 in 29.3. Yet they survived courtesy of Charlie Dean and the Knights’ match-winning partnership of 79* runs.

Dean remained unbeaten on 27 from 56, striking two boundaries, whereas Knight’s masterful knock included eight fours and a six.

For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun picked up three wickets.

Earlier, England capitalized on the decision to bowl first and, courtesy of Sophie Ecclestone’s three-wicket haul and impressive bowling performance, bowled out Bangladesh for a modest total of 178.

Opener Rubya Haider was sent back on the last ball of the fourth over, whereas skipper Nigar Sultana also perished in the next over, which slumped them to 25-2.

England kept checking Bangladesh with economical bowling and regular wickets in the middle overs.

Sobhana Mostary remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with 60 from 108 balls with the aid of eight fours. She was involved in a string of partnerships that provided some respite before Rabeya Khan’s brisk knock lifted them out of trouble.

She struck six fours and a maximum on her way to 43 from 27 balls.

For England, Sophie Ecclestone remained the standout bowler, picking up a three-wicket haul. Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, and Linsey Smith took two wickets each.

Rashid Khan dismisses ‘second-best in Asia’ tag, stresses hunger to improve

SHARJAH: Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has shared his thoughts regarding the ‘second-best in Asia’ tag, stating that his team’s goal is to improve their performances.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Rashid said that they have not called them the second-best side.

“There’s always talk about us being the second-best team in Asia, but that’s not something we claimed ourselves,” he said.

The spin wizard highlighted Afghanistan’s past performances and stressed the need for improvement in their performance.

“That label came because of our past performances. If you look back — Asia Cup, World Cup semi-finals, ODI World Cup — we’ve beaten some top sides. Even in the Champions Trophy, we defeated England. Of course, in the future, if we don’t play well, we could slip to third, fourth, fifth, or lower,” he continued.

“Our goal is simply to improve as a team and deliver on the day. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t — that’s cricket. What matters is staying hungry to perform and aiming to get better every time. The whole ‘second-best in Asia’ narrative is just something the media has created, not us,” Rashid concluded.

For context, Afghanistan is currently playing a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Notably, after being eliminated from the Asia Cup 2025 group stage, they started their series against the Tigers on a poor note as well.

Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by four wickets in the T20I opener at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

After opting to bat first, Afghanistan could only muster 151 for 9 in their 20 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored with 40 from 31 balls, studded with three sixes and two fours.

In reply, Bangladesh hit the winning runs in 18.4 overs, courtesy of a strong opening foundation. Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan starred with the bat, both scoring half-centuries.

Despite the defeat, Rashid Khan remained the standout bowler for Afghanistan, picking up a four-wicket haul in his quota of four overs.

The second T20I between the two teams is currently underway at the same venue, with Bangladesh eyeing a series win after opting to bowl first.

WATCH: Nashra Sandhu gets out in bizarre fashion against Bangladesh

COLOMBO: Pakistan’s right-handed batter Nashra Sandhu got out in the most bizarre manner during their clash against Bangladesh here at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

The 27-year-old was bowled on the second delivery of the 35th over off Shorna Akter’s flighted delivery outside off stump.

Sandhu tried to play the ball in the crease and ended up losing her wicket with the bat hitting the stumps.

Sandhu’s dismissal highlighted Pakistan’s struggles with the bat as they failed to post a respectable total against Bangladesh’s clinical bowling performance.

After opting to bat first, Pakistan’s innings folded on a mere 129 runs in 38.3 overs, courtesy of Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter’s opening spells.

Both combined to pick up four wickets each and dismantled Pakistan’s top-order, which set the tone for the other bowlers to tighten the screws and never allow to play with freedom.

In reply, Bangladesh chased down the total with ease in 31.1 overs, losing three wickets in the process.

Rubya Haider starred with the bat and scored  54* from 77 balls, laced with eight fours.

For Pakistan, like batting, there weren’t major contributions. Rameen Shamim, Diana Baig, and Fatima Sana picked up one wicket each.

Bangladesh outplay Pakistan to kick off Women’s World Cup campaign

COLOMBO: Clinical Bangladesh thumped Pakistan to start their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 on a winning note here at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Set a partly 130-run target, Bangladesh hit the winning runs with ease on the loss of only three wickets with 19 overs to spare.

In defense of a below-par total, Pakistan removed Bangladesh’s Fargana Hoque in the third over. She departed after scoring two runs. Rubya Haider held one end firm with the second wicket falling on the last ball of the 11th over.

Rameen Shamim trapped Sharmin Akhter lbw to give Pakistan a glimmer of hope. As a result, Bangladesh were reduced to 35-2.

However, skipper Nigar Sultana and Rubya Haider forged a 62-run stand on the third wicket, which never allowed Pakistan to make a comeback into the match.

The partnership eventually ended with Sultana’s wicket, who made 23 from 44 balls.

Meanwhile, Rubya kept on scoring and reached her half-century in the process. She crafted another stand off 34* runs, which saw Bangladesh reach home.

Rubya Haider remained unbeaten on 54 from 77 balls, striking eight fours, whereas Sobhana Mostary struck six boundaries on her way to 24 from 19.

For Pakistan, like batting, there weren’t major contributions. Rameen Shamim, Diana Baig, and Fatima Sana picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter’s bowling spells helped Bangladesh bowl Pakistan for a modest total.

Pakistan could not capitalize on the decision to bat first at R. Premedasa Stadium, Colombo, and were bowled out for 129 runs in 38.3 overs.

Marufa Akter piled up a miserable start for Green Shirts as Omaima Sohail and inform Sidra Amin were sent packing for nought in the first over.

Following the early hiccup, Muneeba Ali and Rameen Shamim put on a brief 42-run stand, which gave their team some respite.

However, Nahida Akter struck in the 11th and 13th over to remove both batters, which put Bangladesh on top. Muneeba scored 17 from 35 deliveries, whereas Rameen struck two fours in her 23 from 39 balls.

As a result, Pakistan slumped to 47-4 in 13.4 overs, and Bangladesh continued to put pressure with regular wickets.

It was a day of collapses for Pakistan as they lost wickets one after another in quick succession.

For Bangladesh, Shorna Akter picked up three wickets. Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter were clinical with the ball and scored two apiece.

Shakib will never play for Bangladesh again: Sports advisor

Bangladesh’s sports advisor Asif Mahmud has declared that all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will not be allowed to wear the national jersey again following his social media post on Sunday.

On Sunday, September 28, Shakib wished the deposed former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, on her birthday in a social media post

Following Shakib’s post, Asif replied without mentioning the all-rounder’s name and reaffirmed his stance on not allowing him to play for Bangladesh.

“All of you have abused me a lot for not rehabilitating one person. But I was right. End of the discussion,” he said in a post, which later became unavailable on his Facebook page.

Shakib Al Hasan also replied to Asif’s remarks and hoped to represent Bangladesh again in the future.

“So someone has finally accepted that it’s because of him that I can never put on the Bangladesh jersey again, because of whom I can’t play for Bangladesh again. Maybe I will return to my motherland one day. Love you, Bangladesh,” said Shakib.

Following this, the sports advisor spoke to a private channel, in which he stated his views regarding Shakib’s political involvement.

“We cannot let him carry the Bangladesh flag,” Asif said. “It won’t be possible for me to allow him to wear the Bangladesh jersey. Maybe I haven’t told the BCB before, but now my clear direction for the BCB would be that Shakib Al Hasan can never again play for Bangladesh.

Shakib Al Hasan did not hold back and explained the reason behind wishing the former prime minister.

“[Hasina] was deeply involved with cricket. We had a relationship through that, even before politics. I wished her from that point of view. There was no other motive, or trying to instigate anyone,” Shakib Al Hasan said.

It is pertinent to mention that Shakib Al Hasan is a former lawmaker from the party of the autocratic former leader, Sheikh Hasina. The all-rounder has been in hot water since Shaikh Hasina’s ouster in a student-led uprising last year.

Earlier this year, a Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant for Shakib Al Hasan in connection with a cheque fraud case.

Nonetheless, Shakib Al Hasan last represented Bangladesh in the Test series against India in October 2024. He has one of the most distinguished careers in Bangladesh cricket, having played 71 Test matches, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is.

Throughout his career, he has scored 14,730 runs and taken 712 wickets across all formats.

Shaheen Afridi reflects on match-winning performance against Bangladesh

DUBAI: Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi opened up after his match-winning performance against Bangladesh in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Pakistan edged Bangladesh by 11 runs to set up its first against arch-rivals India in the continental tournament.

Shaheen Afridi starred with the bat and ball for Pakistan, first chipping in with a crucial 19 runs from 13 balls with the aid of two sixes.

Pakistan posted 135-8 in their 20 overs, courtesy of Bangladesh’s clinical bowling.

Defending a low total, Pakistan needed a special effort up front, and Shaheen provided it with his new ball burst, which set the tone early for the Green Shirts to take hold of the game.

He removed Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy in his first two overs and came back to bowl his last and took the key wicket of Shamim Hossain, which proved to be a final nail in the coffin for the opposition.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Shaheen emphasized his performance and the importance of early wickets.

“I want to dedicate this (award) to my beautiful wife and son. Early on, as a team, we need breakthroughs, and I go for that. In a small total, you need early breakthroughs, and we planned that,” he said.

The 25-year-old also mentioned the slower ball, which removed Shamim Hossain
and expressed his excitement about playing the final against India.

When asked about Shamim’s dismissal on a slower delivery, Shaheen said, ” No, no. I was working on this delivery and glad that in the main time, I delivered. We needed that wicket, and we did it.”

Before the wicket, an animated Mike Hesson [Pakistan white-ball head coach] was seen signalling the pacer to take pace off the ball.

“After early wickets, team decided (to let me go) and take on bowlers. Those sixes turned the momentum to our end. We are ready [ on facing India],” he concluded.

Pakistan edge past Bangladesh to setup India showdown in Asia Cup final

DUBAI: Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf’s impressive three-wicket hauls, backed by clinical spells from spinners, powered Pakistan past Bangladesh to set up a blockbuster final against India in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday.

This will be the first time in the tournament’s history that arch-rivals Pakistan and India will play in the final.

Set 136, Bangladesh crumbled under pressure, managing only 124-9 in their 20 overs.

The game was in mayhem from the start as both teams lost wickets at regular intervals. Bangladesh endured a similar start to Pakistan, losing wickets inside the powerplay.

Shaheen removed Parvez Hossain Emon for a duck on the fifth ball of the first over and sent back Towhid Hridoy for five to set up the tone. The tigers were further pegged back with another wicket in the fifth over, and this time it was dangerous Saif Hassan.

The right-hander, who was in touch against India, fell after scoring 18 from 15 balls. As a result, Bangladesh were reduced to 29-3 in 5.1 overs.

After the fast bowlers, Pakistan’s spinner took control of the match and never allowed Bangladesh batters to gain momentum.

Shamim Hossain remained the sole bright star in Bangladesh’s innings, scoring 30 off 25 with the help of two fours.

However, his wicket in the 17th over dashed the Tigers’ hope to reach the final, with the Men in Green eventually securing a narrow 11-run victory.

For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf shared six wickets between them, whereas Saim Ayub picked up two wickets to set up a thrilling win.

Earlier, Bangladesh tore through Pakistan’s top order with the new ball before their bowlers tightened the screws to restrict them to a modest total of 135 in their 20 overs.

Put into bat first, Pakistan demonstrated a shambolic batting display under the lights at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS) on Thursday.

Taskin Ahmed, who returned to the playing XI, set the tone early with in-form Sahibzada Farhan’s wicket. The right-hander was caught in the covers after scoring four.

With a charged crowd behind them, Bangladesh sensed a perfect opportunity to put Pakistan on the back foot, and it happened in the form of Saim Ayub’s dismissal only in the second over.

Saim’s horror run with the bat continued as he went for a duck for the fourth time in the continental tournament.

As a result, Pakistan slipped to 5-2 in 1.4 overs with Fakhar Zaman and Salman Ali Agha at the crease.

The pair tried to take control of the game, and they managed to do so with a brief 24-run partnership; however, it was only a matter of time before the Tigers took complete control of the match.

With Pakistan reeling at the end of the powerplay at 29, Fakhar tried to launch and ended up holing out to Tanzim Hasan Shakib.

The wicket sparked a mini-collapse, and wickets fell in heaps, before promoted Shaheen Afridi’s lusty blows and sloppy fielding from Bangladesh gave Pakistan some respite.

Hussain Talat only scored three, and skipper Agha managed 19 from 23 balls, while Shaheen struck two sixes in his vital 19 from 13 balls.

Eventually, Pakistan finished their innings with a below-par total, with Mohammad Haris remaining the top scorer. The right-hander scored 31 from 23 balls with the help of two fours and a six.

For Bangladesh, it was an all-round bowling performance; however, Taskin Ahmed stood out with three wickets in his quota of four overs.

Saim Ayub breaks Shahid Afridi’s record with fourth duck in Asia Cup 2025

DUBAI: Left-handed batter Saim Ayub on Thursday surpassed former captain Shahid Afridi’s record with a duck during the Pakistan-Bangladesh clash in the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 Super Four clash.

Saim’s poor run with the bat continued as he was removed on the fourth delivery of the second over, caught by Rishad Hossain at mid-on after hitting a flighted delivery from Mahedi Hasan.

The 24-year-old has so far had a horror run with the bat. Previously, he recorded duck in the Green Shirts group stage fixtures against Oman, arch-rivals India, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Notably, this duck was his fourth in the Asia Cup 2025 and the eighth overall in T20 internationals, surpassing former captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi for the most ducks by a Pakistani batsman in this format.

The record is still held by out-of-favor middle-order batter Umar Akmal.

Meanwhile, star players Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, and Kamran Akmal are tied for fourth place on this undesirable list, each having seven ducks.

Most ducks for Pakistan in T20Is

Umar Akmal – 10 ducks in 84 matches
Saim Ayub – 8 ducks in 47 matches
Shahid Afridi – 8 ducks in 98 matches
Kamran Akmal – 7 ducks in 58 matches
Mohammad Hafeez – 7 ducks in 119 matches
Babar Azam – 7 ducks in 128 matches

Notably, earlier in the tournament, Saim Ayub also became the 62nd batter in men’s T20Is to bag three consecutive ducks, featuring compatriots Mohammad Hafeez and Abdullah Shafique.

Abdullah is at the top of the unwanted list with four consecutive ducks in the shortest format.

Moreover, he is now at the top of the list of most ducks in the T20Is tournament in full member nations.
