Zak Crawley out as England announce squad for Sri Lanka Tests

The England and Wales Cricket (ECB) on Sunday announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming home Test series against Sri Lanka, with top-order batter Zak Crawley missing out due to an injury.

England will host Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series, starting on August 21 at Old Trafford.

Crawley has been ruled out of the series due to a fractured finger. He sustained the injury while attempting a catch in the last Test of the three-match series against West Indies.

In Crawley’s absence, Dan Lawrence is expected to open the innings alongside Ben Duckett during the Sri Lanka series.

England are scheduled to tour Pakistan for a three-match Test series in October after the series against Sri Lanka.

Zak Crawley is now in a race against time as the typical recovery period for a broken finger is approximately six to eight weeks, and the upcoming series against Pakistan is just nine weeks away.

Essex’s Jordan Cox has received his first call-up to the England squad for the Sri Lanka Tests, following his outstanding performance in the County Championship.

Cox scored an impressive 763 runs at an average of 69.36 in 12 matches this season.

Meanwhile, pace bowler Olly Stone has returned to the squad in place of uncapped seam bowler Dillon Pennington, who suffered a hamstring injury during The Hundred.

Sri Lanka pip Pakistan in World Cup standings with England thrashing

BENGALURU: Lahiru Kumara-led pacers decimated England’s batting lineup before sensible half-centuries from Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama led Sri Lanka to a thumping eight-wicket victory in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a modest 157, Sri Lanka knocked the winning runs for the loss of two wickets and 146 balls to spare.

Sri Lanka, however, had a contrasting start to their pursuit as they lost two wickets with just 23 runs on the board in the sixth over, courtesy of David Willey’s back-to-back strikes.

The left-arm pacer removed Kusal Perera (4) and Kusal Mendis (11) in the second and sixth over respectively to put Sri Lanka under pressure.

Sadeera Samarawickrama joined Pathum Nissanka at the crease and the pair launched an astounding recovery.

Samarawickrama and Nissanka batted sensibly and scored at a decent rate amid their match-winning 137-run partnership with both scoring half-centuries.

Nissanka top-scored for Sri Lanka with an 83-ball 77, laced up with seven boundaries and two sixes.

Whereas, Samarawickrama smashed seven boundaries and a six on his way to a 54-ball 65.

For England, only David Willey picked up two wickets while the rest of their bowlers went wicketless.

A dominant eight-wicket victory over England lifted Sri Lanka to fifth spot in the ICC World Cup 2023 standings, replacing Pakistan while defending champions sank to the ninth place.

After opting to bat, England raced to 44 runs in the first six overs, however, returning allrounder Angelo Mathews broke the partnership on the third ball of the next over.

Angelo Mathews was drafted into Sri Lanka’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad in place of injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana.

Dawid Malan departed after scoring 25-ball 28, featuring six boundaries.

His opening partner Jonny Bairstow departed in the 14th over after scoring 30 runs with the help of three boundaries.

Sri Lankan bowlers dominated and kept picking wickets at regular intervals, while Ben Stokes waged a lone battle from the other end and scored an anchoring 43 runs from 73 balls, with the help of six boundaries.

Moeen Ali was the only batter who could support Ben Stokes in a brief 37-run stand for the sixth wicket before Angelo Mathews sent the former back to the pavilion.

Ben Stokes departed in the 31st over at 137-8, and the whole team got bundled out at 156 in the 34th over.

Lahiru Kumara picked three wickets for Sri Lanka, while Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha picked two wickets each.

England edge Sri Lanka to book semi-final berth, Australia crash out

SYDNEY: England batters held their nerves calm to complete a tricky final-over run chase against the spirited Sri Lankan bowling attack and qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals.

With England booking their semi-final spot, the defending champions Australia failed to make it to the final four.

England were off to a flying start to their run chase as skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales laid a solid foundation with a magnificent 75-run partnership.

However, Wanindu Hasaranga’s twin strikes in his two consecutive overs halted England’s march to an easy victory as he removed both the openers.

Jos Buttler fell in the eighth over after scoring 28 off 23, while England’s top-scorer Hales narrowly missed his half-century and could score 47 off 30 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and a six.

Following their dismissals, England ran into a frustrating collapse as they lost four wickets in a span of 53 deliveries for the addition of just 47 runs.

Ben Stokes, however, held his ground firmly in the nervy chase and guided his team to win with a 42 from 36 that only included two fours but kept the score ticking over until Chris Woakes’ cut for four with two balls remaining.

Following a decent performance from their bowlers, one of the tournament’s favourites England would now need to chase down the 142-run target to make their way to the semi-finals.

After opting to bat first in their last fixture of the ongoing mega event, Sri Lankan openers – Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka – provided a decent start to lay the foundation for a competitive total as they added 39 runs at a rapid pace.

Amid the flying start, Mendis found it hard to charge on the English bowlers before falling short to Chris Woakes in the fourth over. He scored 18 off 14 balls.

Nissanka, on the other hand, batted brilliantly and went on to top score for his side with a magnificent half-century knock; scoring 67 off 45 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and five sixes.

Besides Nissanka, none of the Sri Lankan batters could make an impact against the strong English batting lineup and only Bhanuka Rajapaksa had a notable contribution of a run-a-ball 22.

Whereas, five of the Sri Lankan batters failed to amass double-figures and consequently, their side could score 141/8 in their quota of 20 overs.

Sri Lanka’s 141-run total is the lowest total by any team batting first at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Mark Wood led the bowling attack for England with three wickets despite going for 17 runs in his first over, while Sam Curran, Rashid Khan, Ben Stokes and Woakes struck out a batter each.
