SOUTHAMPTON: Tabraiz Shami ripped through England’s batting order as South Africa bagged a thumping win by 90 runs to seal the T20I series 2-1 against the hosts, here on Sunday.

Shamsi shone with his career-best figures of 5 for 24 to reduce England on 101 in their chase costing the hosts their third series loss this summer after skipper Jos Butler took charge of England’s white-ball team.

Reeza Hendrick blasted an astounding knock of 70 off 50, smashing nine scintillating boundaries while Aiden Markam anchored the Proteas’ innings with his unbeaten 51 off 36.

With his late cameo of 22 off 9, David Miller helped his team set the hosts a huge 192-run target to chase.

Opting to field first after winning the toss, England bowlers remained unimpressive and costly except David Willey who produced sensational bowling figures of 3 for 25. While Chris Jordan and Moeen Ali made a scalp apiece.

England, on the other hand, struggled with the bat as they were bowled out in the 17th over, with seven of their batters failing to reach double digits.

South Africa’s clever bowling strategy earned them wickets early in the second innings as right-arm pacer Anrich Nortje dismissed the opener Jason Roy for 17 off 18 while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj got rid of skipper Butler for 14 off 10 to restrict the hosts on 39/2 at the end of the powerplay.

Andile Phehlukwayo and Markram then joined the party and bagged a wicket each as Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali fell cheaply on 7 and 3, respectively, before Shamsi wreaked havoc on England’s batting.

The left-arm spinner stormed England’s lower order with back-to-back wickets dismissing Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, David Willey, Chris Jordan and Adil Rasheed in the span of five overs between the 12th and 16th over.

Bairstow top-scored England’s scorecard with his 27 off 30 before he succumbed to Maharaj to bring the curtains down for his side.

Topley’s six-for aids England stun India in second ODI to keep series alive

LONDON: Reece Topley stormed through the Indian batting line with a six-wicket haul to help England beat India by 100 runs in the second One-Day International, here at Lord’s on Thursday.

Fast bowler Topley shone with his career-best figures of 6/24 as India were bowled out on 146 while chasing a 248-run target posted by England.

India displayed a mediocre batting show as England’s pace attack effectively dismantled their top order forcing India to distress on 31/4 within the 12 overs.

Topley led the charge for England getting rid of the opening pair early. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma went back without scoring while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan fell cheaply on 9.

Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant fell prey to Brydon Carse on a duck while Virat Kohli’s rough patch with the bat continued to haunt the star batter as he ended up getting an outside edge on David Willey’s bowl.

After the initial collapse, India’s middle order put up a slight resistance with Suryakuymar Kumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami building a few unstable partnerships to push the scoreboard to 140/6.

The Blue shirts underwent another collapse in the lower order losing the last four wickets by adding just 6 runs to the total.

For England, apart from sensational bowling figures produced by Topley, Willey, Carse, Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, the hosts reached a competitive total of 246 with help of astounding knocks by Moeen Ali, Willey, Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow after being put to bat by the Indian skipper.

Moeen remained the top scorer of the match with his cautious knock of 47 off 64 balls, including two boundaries and two sixes.

Meanwhile, Willey and Livingstone scored glittering 41 and 33, respectively, after Bairstow smashed 38 at run a ball in the top order.

Pandya stuns England as India bounce back in first white-ball encounter

SOUTHAMPTON: Hardik Pandya soothed India after a crushing red-ball defeat, with his sensational all-round performance as the touring side beat England by 50 runs in the first T20I, here on Thursday.

All-rounder Pandya smashed a blistering half-century off 30 balls coupled with pivotal knocks played by Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav, enabling their side to reach a massive total of 198 in the first innings.

However, England’s chase fell short of expectations as six of their batters failed to get into double figures while Pandya maintained his sublime form and claimed four wickets to knock the hosts out on 148.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma tried to compensate for his absence in the Edgbaston Test after testing Covid positive as he blasted quick 24 runs off 14 balls, hitting four boundaries before he was caught behind the stumps on Moeen Ali’s delivery in the third over.

Hooda and Yadav carried the momentum forward for the Blue Shirts as both the batters moved the scoreboard at an accelerating pace. Hooda scored 33 off 17 balls laced with three fours and two sixes while Yadav made 39 off 19 including four boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Pandya combined excellently with Yadav and Axar Patel to upset England’s bowling attack as he pushed the ball for six boundaries and a huge six during his scintillating knock of 51 off 33 balls.

On the other side, England’s skipper Jos Butler went back on a duck after being bowled out by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the first over, forcing the hosts to get off to a poor start.

Pandya wreaked havoc on England in the fifth over dismissing stong-looking Dawid Malan on 21 followed by a cheap dismissal of Liam Livingstone on a duck in the same over. Jason Roy also fell cheaply on four by Pandy in the 7th over.

England were shattered by the tourists on 33/4 before rookie Harry Brook and left-hander Moeen Ali built a strong partnership of 61 runs. The side underwent another collapse in the 13th over as spinner Yuzendra Chahal removed the pair in the same over.

The rest of England’s batting line lacked vigor as it began to lose wickets at regular intervals and the side was eventually bowled out for 148 in the 20th over.

For India, Pandya starred with the bowl while Chahal and Arshdeep Singh grabbed two wickets each. Bhuvneshwar and Harshal Patel made one scalp apiece.

With the early win, India now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against England with the second match scheduled on July 9 at Birmingham.

Bumrah powers India to dominate England on second day at Edgbaston

BIRMINGHAM: India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball after smashing Stuart Broad for the costliest over in the Test history to drive his team towards a dominant position as England were reduced to 84/5 on a rain-hit second day in the rescheduled final test, here at Edgbaston.

India were bowled out for a mammoth 416 after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja reached his second Test hundred in the first inning. Indian skipper Bumrah played a late cameo of 31 runs, taking the veteran pacer Broad to the task, who conceded 35 runs in an over.

After a rough first day with the bowl, England displayed a dismal batting show as Bumrah stormed through the host’s top order grabbing three early wickets. Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, and Ollie Pope were sent back to the pavilion by the skipper at regular intervals amid the spells of rain.

England star batter Joe Root managed to survive India’s furious pace attack for a brief before he fell prey to Mohammad Siraj on 31 in a caught-behind wicket just before the conclusion of the day.

Meanwhile, nightwatchman Jack Leech proved futile in serving the purpose as he was efficiently removed by Mohammad Shami on a duck.

Vaughan supports Buttler for England’s limited-overs captaincy

LONDON: England’s former captain Michael Vaughan has put his weight behind Jos Buttler to lead his side in the limited-overs format while calling him the best white-ball player in the world.

After England’s white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan is reportedly set to retire from international cricket, Vaughan backed wicket-keeper batter, Buttler, for the role, in his recent column for The Telegraph.

“For me, it’s a no-brainer that Jos Buttler takes over that role. He’s the best white-ball player in the world, he’s got a very smart cricket brain, and he’s got that calmness you need,” said Vaughan in his column.

Vaughan also advocated for Buttler’s inclusion in the Test squad as he believed the wicketkeeper fit well with the aggressive mindset of England’s new regime under head coach Brendon McCullum and skipper Ben Stokes.

“England have this fearless, aggressive nature, and the balls don’t seem to be doing as much in the UK as they have done in previous seasons. If something as radical Buttler as Test opener was ever going to work it would be now, under this management group of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum,” he concluded.

The 31-year-old known for his aggressive batting style has a phenomenal record both in T20I and ODIs. His powerful knock of 162 off 70 balls remained instrumental when England smashed the highest total in ODI cricket, recently against the Netherlands.

In all, Buttler scored 4120 runs in 151 ODIs averaging 41.20 with 10 centuries and 21 half-centuries. Meanwhile, he appeared in 88 T20Is, scoring 2140 runs at an average of 34.5 with 15 half-centuries and a century to his name.

Latham, Williamson star before England bowlers bounce back on third day

LEEDS: New Zealand opener Tom Latham and skipper Kane Williamson starred with the bat before England bowlers shook the middle order to restrict the Kiwis to 168 for the loss of five wickets on the third day of the Leeds Test.

England resumed the proceeding of the third day with an edge over opponents as Jonny Bairstow and debutant Jamie Overton had thrashed the Kiwi bowlers a day earlier but the Kiwis managed to bundle the hosts out on 360 in the first session.

Kiwi pacer Trent Boult upset all-rounder Overton depriving him of his maiden Test hundred as he walked back to the pavilion on 97. Stuart Broad and Bairstow continued to dominate the Kiwi bolwers and combined excellently for 55 runs before Broad was bowled out by Boult on 42.

Last match’s hero for England, Bairstow continued with his sublime form as he topped the scorecard for his side. He blasted 167 runs with an impressive strike rate of above 100, laced with 24 boundaries.

Boult starred with the bowl for his side, grabbing four crucial wickets followed by Tim Southee, who bagged three wickets. Neil Wagner took two while Michael Bracewell made one scalp.

New Zealand, on the other hand, raised a solid start to their second inning as the pair of  Latham and Williamson put England bowlers at unease. The duo put up a strong partnership of 97 runs after their side lost its first wicket on 28.

Debutant Overton was able to derail the partnership as he dismissed Latham on 72, openings the flood gates for the Kiwis. England bowlers dominated the final session as they stormed through New Zealand’s middle order and took four back-to-back wickets to tighten their grip on the match.

Skipper Williamson, who missed the last match after testing positive for Covid-19, failed to take complete advantage after he gained the momentum. He was dismissed by Mathew Pope, two runs short of a half-century.

For England, Potts grabbed two wickets with Jack Leech, Overton and part-timer Joe root making one scalp each.

New Zealand will resume the play on the fourth from 168/5 with all-rounder Dary Mitchell and wicket-keeper Tom Blundell on the crease.

Roy, Salt shine as England blunt Netherlands in a rain-hit second ODI

AMSTELVEEN: Openers Jason Roy and Phil Salt led the charge for England to take their side to a comfortable victory by six wickets against the Netherlands in the rain-hit second ODI, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 236 runs, England batters completely dominated the opposition in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side as wet outfield delayed the start by nearly three hours.

After scoring the highest ODI total in the previous game, the energetic England side came out on the crease with a similar force, bringing up 100 runs in the 15th over.

Roy, who fell cheaply in the last game, joined the party this time as he glittered with a powerful 73 runs knock, laced with 13 fours and a six. Whereas, Salt blasted 77 off 54 including 9 boundaries.

England skipper Eoin Morgan, continued with his dismal form when he was dismissed on a duck for the second time in the series. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone failed to impress this time as he was bowled out by Tim Pringle cheaply.
