SA vs ZIM: Quinton de Kock’s heroics in vain as rain washes out play

HOBART: South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock’s quickfire knock of 18-ball 47 not out went in vain as their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12s fixture against Zimbabwe was called off due to uninterrupted rain.

Set to chase 80 in nine overs, South African opener de Kock launched an attack on the Zimbabwean bowlers from the very first over and set the foundation of the run chase as he scored 23 runs in the first over.

The rain then interrupted once again in the second over consequently causing the target to be revised as 64 in seven overs.

The wicketkeeper batter continued to charge the Zimbabwean bowlers and led his side to 51/0 in just three overs but the rain intervened again, forcing the match to be called off.

Quinton de Kock remained unbeaten with his blistering 47 off 18, laced with eight boundaries and a six, while his opening partner Temba Bavuma could face only two deliveries and scored as many runs.

Zimbabwean all-rounder scripted an astonishing fight for his team after a dreadful start and bolstered the side to put on a commendable total after the contest was reduced to nine overs per side.

Batting first, Zimbabwe suffered an enthralling attack from the South African pace attack which halted them to 19/4 in the fourth over.

Following the slump, Madhevere and Milton Shumba stitched a valiant fifth-wicket partnership and added 60 runs in just 32 deliveries.

Shumba who played the anchoring role with a 20-ball 18 fell on the final delivery of the innings to Anrich Nortje.

Madhevere, on the other hand, top-scored for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 35 off just 18 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.

Lungi Ngidi led the South African bowling attack with two wickets while Wayne Parnell and Nortje struck out a batter each.

T20 WC: Taskin shines as Bangladesh thump Netherlands by 9 runs

HOBART: Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed stormed through the Netherlands batting line as he grabbed four wickets to propel Bangladesh seal a nine-run win in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 on Monday.

Set to chase 145, the Netherlands were restricted to 135, getting all out on the final delivery, after a furious early spell by Taskin, who made consecutive strikes in the first two balls of the innings to wreak havoc on the dutch batting order.

Taskin dismissed opener Vikramjit Singh and No 3 batter Bas de Leede on golden ducks before Max O’ Dowd and Tom Cooper were runout as the Netherlands jittered early in their chase and slid to 15/4 in just 3.4 overs.

Following the slump, Colin Ackermann anchored the innings with a defiant knock of 48-ball 62 laced with six fours and two sixes while skipper Scott Edwards joined him on the crease for a brief partnership of 44 runs.

The skipper managed just 16 off 24 before he was dismissed by Bangladesh captain Shakin Al Hasan in the 12th over, forcing another tumble in the batting line as the next four fell in quick succession.

Tailender Paul van Meekeren scored a quick 24 off 14 but in vain as the game had already slipped out of Dutch hands when Taskin got rid of Ackermann in the 17th over.

For Bangladesh, apart from Taskin, Hasan Mahmud bagged two wickets while Soumya Sarkar and Shakib took a scalp each.

Opting to bowl first, the Netherlands remained sensational with the bowl in the middle as the combined effort by the bowlers reduced Bangladesh to 76/5 in 11 overs after a sublime start of 43 without a loss in the first five overs.

Paul van Meekeren provided the first breakthrough to the Dutch side as he dismissed opener Sarkar after he scored 14 off 14. Bangladesh’s batting line jittered following the first dismissal as the next four batters returned to the pavilion at regular intervals, adding cumulative 27 runs.

Afif and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan then anchored the innings with a 44-run partnership for the sixth wicket with the former being the major contributor. The partnership lasted for 37 balls before medium pacer Bas de Leede dismissed the wicketkeeper batter for a paltry 13 off 18 while Afif was out caught in the same over.

Mosaddek hit a couple of boundaries and a six to rejuvenate his side despite tight bowling by the Dutch bowlers at the death as they offered just 15 runs in the last two overs.

For the Netherlands, van Meekeren and de Leede grabbed two wickets each while Tim Pringle, Shariz Ahmad, Logan van Beek and Fred Klaassen took a scalp apiece.

T20 WC: Kohli’s heroics power India to edge Pakistan in final-over thriller

MELBOURNE: Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya held their nerves strong to steer India to a thrilling victory by four wickets in a nerve-wracking clash against arch-rivals Pakistan of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, here on Sunday.

India chased down the total on the last delivery of the final over as Ravichandran Ashwin worked the ball over the mid-off fielder to snatch the golden run for his side and India finished at 160/6 in their quota of 20 Overs.

India had a horrible start to their run chase as the side lost four wickets for a mere 31 runs in the seventh over.

Following the slump, India’s veteran batter Kohli and all-rounder Pandya stitched an astounding 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket and anchored the run chase.

Kohli was the main aggressor in that 78-ball partnership and brought up his half-century in the 18th Over.

He then took on Pakistan’s one of the best death-over bowlers Haris Rauf for 15 runs in the 19th Over to push Pakistan on the back foot.

Mohammad Nawaz’s final over got off to a dramatic start as he removed the set batter, Pandya, on the first delivery.

He scored 40 off 37 balls, laced with a boundary and two sixes.

The dramatic final over entered a tense stage as a waist-line no ball from Nawaz on the third delivery was powered by Kohli out of the ground and India then needed six off three.

After bowling a wide on the free hit, Nawaz castled Kohli but the Indian batters stole three runs from the deflection.

Left-arm spinner Nawaz then deceived India’s Dinesh Karthik on the second-last delivery and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan ran him out.

The nail-biter came to the final delivery with India needing just one run and Ashwin held his nerves calm to work the ball over the in-ring fielder and sealed the victory for India.

Kohli top-scored for India and remained unbeaten with his masterclass knock of 82 off just 53 with the help of six boundaries and four sixes.

For Pakistan, Nawaz and Haris picked up two wickets each, while Naseem Shah struck out a batter.

Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed starred with glittering half-centuries after initial setbacks as Pakistan managed a respectable 160-run target.

The Green Shirts came from behind as they were reduced to 15/2 in the first four overs before Iftikhar blasted a sensational 34-ball 51 laced with four gigantic sixes and two fours while Shan played a valiant knock of 52 not out off 42 including five boundaries.

Pakistan went through a dismal start as skipper Babar Azam went back on the golden duck when Arshdeep Singh plumbed him in the second over of the game. The left-arm pacer then dismissed No 1 ranked Mohammad Rizwan in his next over as he top-edged the ball while attempting a hook shot.

Shan and Iftikhar, however, anchored Pakistan’s innings with a valiant partnership of 76 runs for the third wicket to take the scoreboard to 91/2 in 9.2 overs before Shami dismissed the latter after he completed his fifty.

Following the dismissal, the batting side went through another slump, losing wickets at regular intervals as the next four batters failed to get into double figures.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya stormed through the middle order as he grabbed three wickets, getting rid of Shadab Khan (5), Haider Ali (2) and Mohammad Nawaz (9) cheaply while Arshdeep sent back Asif Ali who just managed 2 off 3 balls.

Shaheen Afridi, however, played a late cameo as he smacked a huge six and a four during his quickfire 8-ball 16 before he was caught and bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar while No 9 batter Haris Rauf also hit a six in the final over to take Pakistan to 159/8 in the allotted 20 overs.

PAK 116/6 (16 Overs)

15.5: Nawaz is looking to create room, and Pandya bowls a short-of-length ball at his body. Tries to run it down past short third, who has just moved into the circle, and the extra bounce ensures he only manages to glove it to the keeper.

Pandya comes to bowl his last

PAK 106/5 (15 Overs)

Ashwin comes again

PAK 99/5 (14 Overs)

13.6: Angling into middle and leg, so there’s very little room to work with either. Clears his front leg, goes hard with that diagonal bat, and hits it straight down the throat of deep midwicket.

13.2: Shadab looks to take it on. Clears his front leg to slog over the on side, but it’s a hard thing to do against this sort of length. Goes with a diagonal bat, slices it a little, and only succeeds in launching it straight to long-on.

Pandya replaces Axar

PAK 96/3 (13 Overs)

12.2: Full, with late tail into the right-hander. Again, Iftikhar looks to punch down the ground without getting forward, just clears his front leg and throws a straight bat at the ball, and this time the ball sneaks past his inside edge to thud into his back leg.

PAK 10/1 (3 Overs)

PAK 6/1 (2 Overs)

1.1: Full, swinging into the pads. Babar was looking to work it away with a roll of the wrists but it skidded into his shin. Ultra-Edge confirms no bat involved. Pitched in line, impact in line, hitting leg stump three-quarters of the way up! Babar trudges off.

Arshdeep Singh to bowl from the other end

India-Pakistan promise a high octane encounter despite rain threat

Even the forecast of a wretched weather has failed to dampen the spirits before a high octane India-Pakistan T20 World Cup cricket in Melbourne on Sunday.

There was cacophony as fans beat drums, there was loud music from both countries, charged-up banters around the iconic MCG as blue and green shirts swamped the pathways to the MCG. Expectedly, Indian fans had outnumbered their rivals as well as on the level of decibel.

Still, the personnel in green did not budge

One frisky Pakistan fan, Mohammad Wahab from Lahore, won the battle of words and slogans. The young boy mimicked how KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will get bamboozled by Shaheen Shah Afridi in reference to lanky Pakistan paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi’s triple strikes in last year’s T20 World Cup match in Dubai. That formed the basis of Pakistan’s incredulous ten-wicket win over India — their first win in 13 attempts against India in all ICC World Cup matches (20 or 50 overs). Not a single soul outside the MCG and millions around the globe would like rain to make the occasion a damp squib.

And hopefully nature will also relent. The Bureau of Meteorology also seems to be avid fans of Indo-Pak cricket as they keep changing the forecast — from 90 percent rain to 30 late on Saturday night. It will further lesse, for sure it has to.
Despite Indian fans terming it a “fluke” and “thing of the past” Wahab and his coterie were fully charged, not sparing any moment in reminding the ten wicket thrashing and one win in two Asia Cup games. Inside the stadium, the men in blue were doing their drills, knowing their unpredictable opponents would throw a challenge like no other.

[totalpoll id=”241845″]

Rohit played down the fear of rain

“We need to come here thinking that it’s a 40-over game,” said Rohit. “We will be ready for that. If the situation demands that it’s a shorter game, we will be ready for that as well.”

His counterpart, Babar Azam also feels rain or no rain remain out of control. “We have not been singing lullabies ‘rain, rain go away,” because it’s out of our control. We can control what we can control. It would be good to have a full match because millions of fans are waiting for this match,” said Babar, who led Pakistan to a semi-final finish in his first experience as captain.

Rohit will experience that for the first time here. Rohit admitted Pakistan has always posed challenges and to face that challenge India will be short on weapons. Their ace, spearhead and wicket taking bowler Jaspit Bumrah is not here in Australia after a recurrence of back problem last month. His replacement Mohammad Shami has experience but not the reputation of Bumrah. Shami was made a villain after India’s defeat in Dubai last year for conceding 43 runs in just 3.5 overs.

“I don’t want to use the word ‘pressure’ because pressure is constant, I would like to take this as a challenge. This Pakistani team is a very challenging team. I have been playing against Pakistan since 2007. Some matches we lost and some we won but the challenge of playing Pakistan has always been there.
“Pakistan were good on the day of the T20 World Cup match (in 2021). They were also good at the Asia Cup. Luckily for us we gotta play them twice at the Asia Cup, we don’t get to play them a lot. We got to gauge them, their strengths, weaknesses.”

Last year India failed to qualify for the semi-finals — a lacking that Rohit felt was addressed in 30-plus matches this year. That doubles down to the fact that India has not won a major ICC event since the 2013 triumph in the Champions Trophy in England.

“It’s there at the back of our players’ mind (not winning an international event for nine years), but it’s important to just keep that away and just focus on the job at hand. It’s my personal belief that if you think too much of the past, I think you won’t be able to focus on the present.”

Pakistan’s body language has looked better, igone if that’s my bias. But the fact is that a tri-series win in New Zealand has boosted the confidence of this young team. “We are focusing on the match and hope that we are able to execute our plans come Sunday.”

While India will miss their spearhead Bumrah, Pakistan will sigh a relief that their linchpin of the fast bowling attack Shaheen Shah Afridi has returned after a knee injury. Shaheen will accompany Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah — the trio playing for the first time in an international match for the first time. If Shaheen is lethal, Haris is venomous, having played for Melbourne Star in the Big Bash in 2019. He took 20 wickets in ten games including a hat trick. Naseem Shah has also sent down shivers in Indian batting during the Asia Cup, leaving the rivals wondering how Pakistan can produce a battery of fast bowlers.

“The way our fast bowlers are performing, Shaheen [Shah Afridi] has come back, [Mohammad] Wasim, and especially the way Haris [Rauf] has improved his bowling and grown his game, our confidence in our bowling unit is quite high,” said Babar. “So, on that day, we will try to execute our plans. We have a good, strong bowling attack and that is acclaimed by all.”

Babar ruled out top order batter Fakhar Zaman from Sunday’s game saying the left-hander is not hundred percent and it would not be a good idea to risk him.
So once more the battle lines are drawn. The fans are ready with nearly a packed 100,000 MCG — already having an iconic status in world cricket — will add another chapter by hosting an Indo-Pakistan T20I for the first time. Fingers crossed, rain stays away and it proves to be a cracking game.

Fans around the world do not expect anything less.
