Bas de Leede registers worst bowling figures in ODIs

DELHI: Netherlands’ all-rounder Bas de Leede on Wednesday, broke Mick Lewis and Adam Zampa’s joint record of the worst bowling figures in ODI cricket in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 against Australia.

Bas de Leede was taken to the cleaners by the Australian batters in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023 here and consequently conceded a whopping 115 runs in his quota of 10 overs and bagged two wickets.

De Leede went for six sixes and 13 boundaries during Australia’s late onslaught which also included a 28-run 49th over against Glenn Maxwell, who recorded the fastest World Cup hundred, breaking Aiden Markram’s record.

Bas de Leede’s dismal bowling figures were the most expensive in the history of ODIs, surpassing Mick Lewis and Adam Zampa’s dubious records.

For the unversed, Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa joined the unwanted list, last month when he went for plenty against South Africa.

Zampa was ruthlessly dominated by in-form South African hard-hitting batters Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller.

The leg-spinner conceded 113 runs in his 10 overs and could not pick up a single wicket.

Notably, Adam Zampa’s haul of nine sixes was the joint-second worst by a bowler in an ODI and only behind Rashid Khan, who conceded 10 sixes against England in 2019.

Most expensive ODI bowling figures

Bas de Leede 115-2 (15)
Adam Zampa 113-0 (10)
Mick Lewis 113-0 (10)
Wahab Riaz 110-0 (10)
Rashid Khan 110-0 (9)

Meanwhile, Australia, after opting to bat first, racked up a mammoth total of 399/8 in the allotted overs, courtesy of a quickfire century by Glenn Maxwell after David Warner’s 93-ball 104.

Besides the two centurions, star Australian batter Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne made notable contributions as both scored sensible half-centuries.

Logan van Beek was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands, picking up four wickets for 74 in his 10 overs.

Ruthless Australia hand biggest World Cup defeat to Netherlands

DELHI: Glenn Maxwell’s fastest World Cup century, followed by Adam Zampa’s four-fer powered Australia to a massive 309-run victory over the Netherlands in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup.

Australia’s 309-run victory over the Netherlands was the biggest victory margin by runs in the history of the World Cups.

Set to chase a daunting 400-run target, the Netherlands’ batting lineup failed completely and could only raise 90 in response before bundling out in 21 overs.

Dutch opener Vikramjit Singh offered brief resistance with his run-a-ball 25 and top-scored for the side.

Teja Nidamanuru (14) was the next top-scorer for the Netherlands while Colin Ackermann (10), Sybrand Engelbrecht (11) and Scott Edwards (12) were the only other batters to reach the double figures.

Adam Zampa spearheaded Australia’s bowling attack with sensational figures of 4/8, followed by Mitchell Marsh, who took two wickets.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, however, contributed with a wicket apiece.

Glenn Maxwell in his blistering 40-ball century, surpassed South Africa’s Aiden Markram, who scored the fastest hundred of the World Cup in 49 balls at the same venue against Sri Lanka.

Maxwell’s innings ended at 106 runs in 44 balls, featuring nine boundaries and eight sixes.

Prior to that, Australia had a shaky start after winning the toss as they lost Mitchell Marsh in the fourth over at a meagre total of 28.

However, David Warner coming off his 163 off 124 against Pakistan, joined hands with Steve Smith and knitted a solid 132-run stand for the second wicket.

Both batters completed their fifties during the partnership before Aryan Dutt sent Smith back to the pavilion.

Smith scored a 68-ball 71, with the help of nine boundaries and one six.

David Warner, played an anchor role during his 84-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne, dominated by the latter, scoring 62 runs.

Labuschagne’s 47-ball 62 featured seven boundaries and two sixes before he was caught in an attempt to clear mid-on off Bas de Leede.

Meanwhile, David Warned completed his 22nd and second consecutive ODI century in 91 balls but got out two balls later leaving Australia to 267-5 in the 40th over.

Glenn Maxwell, came out to bat at number 6 and started off his innings with back-to-back boundaries to Bas de Leede after missing the first ball.

Bas de Leede had conceded 51 runs in his first six overs, but Maxwell’s blistering knock handed de Leeded the unwanted record of conceding the most runs in an ODI innings – 115 runs.

Maxwell smashed 28 runs in the penultimate over, which was the last over of Bas de Leede, to complete his third ODI hundred.

Meanwhile, captain Pat Cummins stayed with him on the other end of the partnership dominated by Maxwell’s onslaught. Cummins scored a mere 8 runs in the partnership of 103.

Maxwell’s 44-ball cameo came to an end in the final over, before Cummins hit the last ball for four to end the Australian innings at 399.

Netherlands bowling charts were topped by Logan van Beek who picked four wickets but conceded 74 runs, while Bas de Leede’s worst bowling figures also included two wickets.

Hardik Pandya ruled out of ICC World Cup 2023 clash against England

Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya will remain out of the team for their upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 match against England on October 29 in Lucknow, owing to his ongoing recovery from the ankle injury.

Hardik Pandya twisted his ankle last Thursday just three balls into his stint as the first change in the ninth over during the match against Bangladesh.

Following prolonged on-field treatment, he tried running in to bowl but could only hobble towards the crease and eventually limped off the field.

India won the match by seven wickets, with Pandya playing no part in the match after suffering the aforementioned injury.

Subsequently, he missed the next match against New Zealand and was replaced by Suryakumar Yadav, who could only score two runs before being run out.

India went on to win the match by four wickets, courtesy of Virat Kohli’s gutsy 95-run, which propelled India to the top of the ICC World Cup 2023 standings with five wins out of five games.

Set to chase 274, India completed the pursuit for the loss of six wickets and 12 balls remaining to stay unbeaten in the mega event.

Notably, this was India’s first victory over New Zealand after 20 years in an ICC tournament.

Angelo Mathews replaces injured Pathirana in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad

COLOMBO: Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has replaced injured pacer Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Pathirana sustained a shoulder injury in Sri Lanka’s six-wicket defeat against Pakistan and was consequently ruled out of his side’s next ICC World Cup 2023 fixtures against Australia and the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews, who last played an ODI in June, had already linked up with the Sri Lanka squad ahead of their clash against the Netherlands, called up as a travelling reserve alongside pacer Dushmantha Chameera.

Mathews’ inclusion will serve as a major confidence booster for Sri Lanka, who can bank on his huge experience. The all-rounder represented the nation in 2011, 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

Angelo Mathews also captained Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Matheesha Pathirana’s exclusion marked a second blow to Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 as their captain Dasun Shanaka was also ruled out of the mega event due to a quadriceps tear, which he also picked up during his side’s fixture against Pakistan.

Pacer Chamika Karunaratne replaced Shanaka in the squad while wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis took the leadership role.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka are also with their ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who also missed out on the World Cup due to an injury.

For the unversed, former champions Sri Lanka are struggling to get going in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 as they currently hold ninth position with only two points in four matches.

They next face defending champions England on October 26, who are at the bottom of the table, also with two points in four matches.

Wasim Akram lashes out at Pakistan cricket team after loss against Afghanistan

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has heavily criticized the Pakistan cricket team after an upset loss at the hands of Afghanistan in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

While talking to ‘The Pavilion,’ Wasim Akram slammed the Greenshirts for their below-par performance in the field, owing to their substandard fitness levels.

“It was embarrassing today, look at the fielding, and the fitness levels. We’ve been screaming for the last 3 weeks that these players haven’t undergone a fitness test in the last two years,” said Wasim Akram.

He further emphasized the significance of being physically fit to perform well in the field.

“Fielding is all about fitness and that’s where we are lacking. Now we have reached that same position, where we will pray for ifs and buts to happen,” he further added.

Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the ICC World Cup 2023 match yesterday.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah scored sensible half-centuries after Noor Ahmad’s 3/49 led Afghanistan to upset Pakistan.

The eight-wicket victory marked Afghanistan’s first over Pakistan in ODIs. The two sides had come face to face on seven occasions in the 50-over format.

Set to chase 283, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran provided a solid start to the team. The pair put together a century-plus stand as both scored half-centuries before Usama Mir dismissed Gurbaz in the 22nd over.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim stood his ground firm and was involved in another anchoring partnership when he added 60 runs for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah before Hasan Ali got rid of him in the 34th over.

He top-scored for Afghanistan with 87 in 113 balls, hitting 10 boundaries.

Shah was then joined by his skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and the duo knitted a sensible 96-run partnership to steer Afghanistan to a historic victory with an over to spare.

Rahmat Shah scored an unbeaten 77 off 84 deliveries, laced up with five boundaries and two sixes while Shahidi scored 48 not out in 45 balls with the help of four boundaries.

For Pakistan, only Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali could pick up a wicket each while the rest of their bowlers went wicketless against Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, in the first innings Pakistan opening batters Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq justified their captain’s decision to bat first by putting up a 56-run partnership.

Azmatullah Omarzai gave the first breakthrough to Afghanistan by sending Imam-ul-Haq back ending his brief innings of 17 off 22.

Babar Azam then joined Abdullah Shafique and piled up 54 runs for the second wicket, before Noor Ahmad dismissed the latter to claim his first World Cup wicket.

Shafique scored 56 off 75, knitted with five boundaries and two sixes.

Babar Azam played a cautious 74-run knock from 92 deliveries, with the help of four boundaries and one six, before falling to Noor Ahmad.

Iftikhar Ahmed then joined Shadab Khan at a total of 206 in the 42nd over and attacked Afghanistan bowlers with a blistering innings of 42 off 27, featuring two boundaries and four sixes.

Together they added 73 runs off 45 balls to lift Pakistan’s total to 282, before falling in the final over.

Noor Ahmad returned with figures of 3-49 for Afghanistan, while Naveen-ul-Haq picked two wickets.

The sensational eight-wicket victory ascended Afghanistan to sixth in the ICC World Cup 2023 standings while Pakistan managed to hold on to their fifth position.

De Kock-inspired South Africa crush Bangladesh despite Mahmudullah’s ton

MUMBAI: In-form Quinton de Kock played a swashbuckling 174-run knock before a combined bowling effort steered South Africa to humble Bangladesh by 149 runs in the 23rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a mammoth 383, Bangladesh were bundled out on a paltry 233 despite Mahmudullah’s grit.

South Africa pacers launched a collective attack on the Bangladesh top-order to leave the side reeling at 58/5 in 15 overs.

Coming out to bat at number six, Mahmudullah remained the standout batter for Bangladesh as he put on valiant partnerships with Mehidy Hasan Miraz (11), Nasum Ahmed (19) and Hasan Mahmud (15).

He then put together an astounding 68-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Mustafizur Rahman – bringing up his valiant century in the process – before Gerald Coetzee finally sent him packing in the 46th over.

Mahmudullah top-scored for Bangladesh with a gutsy run-a-ball 111, which featured 11 boundaries and four sixes.

Lizaad Williams then dismissed Mustafizur (11) in the next over to complete a resounding victory for South Africa.

Coetzee led the bowling attack for South Africa with 3/62 in his 10 while Kagiso Rabada, Williams and Marco Jansen bagged two each.

South African batters justified their captain Aiden Markram’s decision to bat first as they racked up a huge total on the board.

The Proteas, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost opener Reeza Hendricks (12) and Rassie van der Dussen (1) cheaply with just 36 runs on the board in the eighth over.

Following the early blow, Quinton de Kock was joined by skipper Markram and the pair settled things down with a sensible partnership.

They added 131 runs for the third wicket at a decent rate before Markram’s Bangladesh counterpart Shakib Al Hasan got rid of him in the 31st over.

He scored a cautious 60 in 69 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Quinton de Kock then joined forces with in-form hard-hitting batter Heinrich Klaasen and the duo after settling down, turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting.

De Kock and Klaasen put together a 142-run partnership, conceding just 87 deliveries before the former finally perished in the 46th over.

He top-scored for South Africa with a quickfire 174 in 140 balls, laced up with 15 boundaries and seven sixes.

Klaasen then took charge of South Africa’s onslaught and was supported by David Miller, who scored a brisk 15-ball 34.

The two finishers knitted a sensational 65-run partnership, taking just 25 deliveries before Klaasen fell in the final over.

He fell just shy of his well-deserved century, scoring 90 in a mere 49 deliveries, smashing two boundaries and eight sixes.

Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh, picking up two wickets, while Shakib Al Hasan, Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz made one scalp each.

‘Comfortable at three’ if Travis Head is back, says Mitchell Marsh

Australia’s Mitchell Marsh on Tuesday said he will be “comfortable” to bat at number three if opener Travis Head returns to the team for their ICC World Cup 2023 clash against the Netherlands.

Mitchell Marsh comes into Wednesday’s ICC World Cup 2023 game in New Delhi fresh from his 121 in a 259-run opening partnership with David Warner against Pakistan last week.

The in-form Marsh has opened the batting in Australia’s four matches in the tournament so far, contributing with a fifty and ton in the previous two victories.

The five-time champions lost their opening two matches.

Head, who broke his hand at Centurion in South Africa last month, has rejoined the team after rehabilitation in Adelaide and had a hit at the nets at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

“I think that decision (of having Travis Head in the XI) will be made this afternoon/tonight,” Marsh told reporters on the eve of the clash with the giant-killing Dutch.

“He looked good, a bit of range hitting last night. He says the hand feels good. So, I’m sure if he’s fit, he’ll be available for selection in the team.”

On slipping down the batting order, Marsh said, “Yeah, I mentioned to David Warner, that maybe he can bat three, but I got a firm no from him, so that’s being sarcastic there guys!

“But yeah, very happy to go back down to three. I’ve obviously batted there a lot over the last couple of years, so I feel really comfortable at three. And if and when Head comes back in, I think that’s the best position for me to play for this team.”

The Netherlands stunned high-flying South Africa last week but lost to Sri Lanka in their next outing at the ICC World Cup 2023.

Afghanistan’s shock win over Pakistan in Chennai on Monday came after they had stunned defending champions England in New Delhi.

Mitchell Marsh said the level of competitiveness has brought the tournament alive.

“Teams have got better. I think that’s great for world cricket, certainly in tournaments like this that can sometimes be pretty long,” said Marsh.

“We respect the Netherlands; they’re playing some good cricket and that will be a tough challenge.”

Australia began the tournament with a loss to India and then went down to South Africa before they bounced back to be placed fourth in the 10-team table led by the hosts.

“We’re not in unfamiliar territory. We had a slow start and we were put under pressure at times, but the vibe is great,” said Mitchell Marsh.

“We’ve played really good cricket the last two games and hopefully that’s the case tomorrow. So, there’s a big carrot dangling for us in a couple of weeks’ time.”

Brydon Carse replaces injured Reece Topley in England ICC World Cup 2023 squad

Fast bowler Brydon Carse was on Monday called up to the England squad at the ICC World Cup 2023 to replace the injured Reece Topley, tournament officials said.

South Africa-born Carse has so far played 12 one-day internationals and three Twenty20 games for England since making his debut in 2021.

Topley fractured his index finger on his bowling hand in Saturday’s 229-run mauling at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai and will sit out the rest of the competition.

“England and Surrey seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the ICC Men’s World Cup after fracturing his left index finger during England’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday,” ECB stated.

Initial reports suggested that the left-arm pacer may have cracked his finger. He was then taken for scans in Mumbai which revealed the full extent of his injury.

“Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours,” said ECB.

“He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation,” the statement added.

England had a disappointing World Cup campaign thus far as the defending champions managed to win only one game out of four and currently sit ninth in the standings, trailing by Afghanistan, who upset them by 69 runs last week.
