Sri Lanka edge Netherlands to claim first win in ICC World Cup 2023

LUCKNOW: Sadeera Samarawickrama scored an unbeaten 91 after Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajitha’s four-fers to power Sri Lanka to edge the Netherlands by five wickets in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase 263, Sri Lanka knocked off the winning runs for the loss of five wickets and 10 balls to spare to taste their maiden success in the ICC World Cup 2023.

The Asian side had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they lost their opener Kusal Perera (5) perished cheaply with just 18 runs on the board in the fifth over.

Pathum Nissanka then put together a brief 34-run partnership with skipper Kusal Mendis, who could score a 17-ball 11 before walking back to the dugout in the 10th over.

Coming out to bat at number four, Sadeera Samarawickrama joined Nissanka in the middle and they put together an important 52-run partnership before the opening batter finally perished in the 17th over.

He scored 54 in 52 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries.

Samarawickrama was then involved in yet another crucial partnership for Sri Lanka when he added 77 runs for the fourth wicket with Charith Asalanka, who scored a cautious 44.

He then put together a 76-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva, who fell for a 37-ball 30 in the 47th over when Sri Lanka needed a mere six runs.

All-rounder Dushan Hemantha (4*) then scored the winning runs for Sri Lanka with a boundary while Samarawickrama stood firm at the non-striker end.

He top-scored for Sri Lanka with an unbeaten 91 in 107 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Aryan Dutt was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands, claiming three wickets while Paul van Meekeren and Colin Ackermann struck out a batter apiece.

The Netherlands entered this match with momentum from their 38-run victory over South Africa and opted to bat first against Sri Lanka, who are yet to win a game in the tournament.

However, Kasun Rajitha bowled a brilliant spell with the new ball and reduced Netherlands to 54-3 in 12 overs.

Dilshan Madushanka bowled equally well from the other end and sent the next two Dutch batters back to the pavilion before Maheesh Theekshana bowled Scott Edwards to leave the Netherlands reeling at 91-6.

Sri Lanka were all set to bundle out Netherlands quickly, but Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek scripted a gutsy recovery for the Dutch side.

They knitted a formidable 130-run partnership for the seventh wicket to pull their team out of the trouble.

Engelbrecht scored 70 off 82, with the help of four boundaries and one six before Madushanka bowled him and broke the partnership at a total of 221.

Van Beek played an anchoring innings on the other end and completed his maiden half-century to help drag his team’s total to 252.

He was dismissed while attempting to send Rajitha’s slower ball over mid-wicket but was caught by Asalanka. His 75-ball 59 featured only one boundary and a six.

Paul van Meekeren was the last man to fall for the Netherlands in the final over at 262.

Madushanka claimed 4-49, while Rajitha returned with 4-50.

Australia ascend in ICC World Cup 2023 standings at Pakistan’s disposal

BENGALURU: David Warner and Mitchell Marsh’s dominating centuries, followed by a disciplined bowling performance, led Australia to a thumping 62-run victory over Pakistan in the ICC World Cup 2023 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Set to chase a daunting 368-run target, Pakistan could accumulate 305 in response, before being bundled out in the 46th over.

Pakistan got off to a solid start as their openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq also fired with both scoring half-centuries.

The pair took Pakistan to 134 unhurt in 21 before Marcus Stoinis struck on his very first delivery to break the shackles as he outclassed Abdullah with a short-pitched delivery.

The right-handed batter scored 64 in 61 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and two sixes.

Stoinis then struck again in his next over to remove Imam and posted a major dent to Pakistan’s pursuit by removing both set batters in quick succession.

Imam remained the top scorer for Pakistan with a 71-ball 70, hitting 10 boundaries.

Out-of-form Adam Zampa soon strengthened Australia’s command by claiming the prized scalp of Pakistan captain Babar Azam (18), causing the green shirts to slip to 175/3 in 26.2 overs.

Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan then put together an anchoring 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Pat Cummins got rid of Saud, who scored 30 off 31.

Rizwan was then joined by Iftikhar Ahmed in the middle and he charged at the Australian bowlers before Zampa removed him in the 39th over.

Iftikhar scored a brisk 26 in 20 balls with the help of three sixes.

Zampa then struck again in his next over and got rid of Pakistan’s mainstay Mohammad Rizwan to put the five-time champions in complete control.

Rizwan remained a notable run-getter for Pakistan with a 40-ball 46 including five boundaries.

Australian bowlers then ran through their batting tail and soon booked Pakistan on 305 to taste their second consecutive victory, which lifted them to the fourth position in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Adam Zampa led the bowling attack for Australia with 4/53 in his 10, followed by two each from Stoinis and Pat Cummins while Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood struck out a batter apiece.

Australia after being invited to bat by Pakistan captain Babar Azam, showed an early glimpse of the incoming onslaught with a six in the first over of Shaheen Afridi.

Usama Mir then dropped a simple catch in the fifth over to give David Warner a second life at 10.

Warner then led the onslaught with 40 off 29 in the first ten overs at a total of 82, while Mitchell Marsh scored 35 off 31.

Warner completed his half-century off 39 balls, while his partner took a ball more to reach the milestone.

Australia were at 149 without losing any wicket in 20 overs and looked set to breach the 400-run mark, however, spin bowlers Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Nawaz bowled tight lines to slow down the run flow.

However, they could not stop them for too long as David Warner raced to his fifth century in ODI World Cups and 21st overall in only 85 balls.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh also reached the milestone on the next ball, taking 99 deliveries.

The 259-run devastating opening partnership finally came to an end in the 34th over during Shaheen Afridi’s first over of the second spell.

Mitchell Marsh smoked two sixes to welcome Afridi before being caught at short fine leg by Usama Mir. His 108-ball 121 featured ten boundaries and nine sixes.

Glenn Maxwell followed him on the next ball after bagging a golden duck.

Usama Mir then sent Steve Smith back to the pavilion before David Warner reached the 150-run mark in 116 balls with a six.

Haris Rauf, who gave 59 runs off his first four overs, returned to the attack and was welcomed with a six by David Warner however, the left-handed batter’s attempt to hit back-to-back sixes failed as he was caught at long-on.

David Warner played a brisk 163 runs innings in 124 balls with the help of 14 boundaries and nine sixes.

Australia were 325-4 in the 43rd over when Warner departed with the 400-run mark still in sight, however, Pakistani bowlers capitalized and took timely wickets to restrict them to 367-9 in their accumulated 50 overs.

Marcus Stoinis (21) and Josh Inglis (13) were the only batters to reach double figures after the openers’ onslaught.

Shaheen Afridi picked five wickets for 54 runs, while Haris Rauf gave away 83 runs in eight overs to pick three wickets.

Hardik Pandya ruled out of ICC World Cup 2023 clash with New Zealand

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of India’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash with New Zealand after suffering an injury in the win over Bangladesh, the BCCI said in a statement Friday.

Pandya twisted his ankle Thursday just three balls into his stint as the first change in the ninth over, after being hit for consecutive boundaries by Liton Das.

Following prolonged on-field treatment, he tried running in to bowl but could only hobble towards the crease and eventually limped off the field.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) boss Jay Shah said Pandya would not fly to Dharamsala for Sunday’s match with the Kiwis.

He would instead “join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England” for their next match on the following Sunday, Shah said in a statement.

Hardik Pandya’s departure saw Kohli bowl for the first time in six years when he took charge for the rest of the over.

India defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets with Virat Kohli making his 48th ODI century to close in on Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 hundreds in the format.

Chasing a modest 257, India comfortably raised 261 for the loss of three wickets and 51 balls to spare.

Rohit, who majorly dominated the opening stand, fell just shy of his half-century as he perished after scoring a 40-ball 48 which featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Virat Kohli then joined Shubman Gill at the crease and together another crucial partnership for India, adding 44 runs to the total before the latter perished soon after amassing his half-century.

He remained a notable contributor to India’s fourth victory in the ICC World Cup 2023 with a brilliant 53. His 55-ball knock included five boundaries and two boundaries.

Virat Kohli closes gap on Sachin Tendulkar’s record after 48th ODI ton

Virat Kohli said he was enjoying the “special feeling” of playing in a World Cup on home soil after his unbeaten century guided India to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in their fourth match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Kohli’s 48th ODI century left him just one shy of equalling Indian great Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 ODI hundreds.

Kohli made 103 not out with a six against spinner Nasum Ahmed, the shot also ending the match in a finish worthy of a Bollywood movie as India reached a target of 257 with more than eight overs to spare.

He faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes, with this century his third score in excess of fifty in four innings following contributions of 85 and 55 not out over Australia and Afghanistan.

“I’ve had a few fifties in World Cups and haven’t converted them so I just wanted to finish the game off this time around,” Kohli said afterwards.

“The pitch was pretty good, it allowed me to play my game and just hit the gaps.”

India have now won all four of their matches in the tournament to date.

“There is a great atmosphere in the changing room, we’re loving each other’s company, the spirit is there for everyone to see on the field,” said Kohli, who played alongside Tendulkar in the India team that defeated Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2011 final in Mumbai.

“We understand it’s a long tournament and you need to create some momentum for the guys to come out and play like this.

“It’s a special feeling playing at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it.”

This was Virat Kohli’s first century in the World Cup since his 107 against Pakistan during the 2015 edition in Adelaide, with the 34-year-old posting seven fifties at the tournament prior to Thursday’s hundred.

Virat Kohli was helped on his way, however, by KL Rahul, who kept himself in check during a run-a-ball 34 not out.

Two balls before he reached his century, a Nasum delivery fired down the leg side was not signalled a wide — although any controversy was short-lived given the ensuing six.

“He (Kohli) was confused, he said ‘it’ll not look too nice not to take the single, it’s still a World Cup, and it’s still a big stage. I don’t want to look like I am just trying to get the milestone’,” Rahul said.

“But I said, I mean it is not won but still I think we’ll win quite easily, so if you can get to the milestone why not, you must try. And he did that in the end. I wasn’t going to run the singles anyway.”

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who made 53, Gill and put on 88 for the first wicket with Rohit before a stand of 44 with Kohli, said batting with the duo was an education.

“I think there’s a fine line between sometimes being too aggressive or going in the shell, especially playing big games.

“But I think the way they play, the way their mindset is playing those big games in the World Cup is what I try to learn.”

Pakistan geared up for Australia challenge in ICC World Cup 2023

BENGALURU: Pakistan men’s cricket team, led by Babar Azam, are all set for yet another major challenge amid their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign as they take on five-time champions Australia on Friday.

It is the maiden contest of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and the battle of the two cricket powerhouses promises to deliver thrill and excitement to the fans in the stands and around the world.

This is the Babar Azam-led side’s fourth match in the tournament and they are placed fourth on the 10-team points table with two wins from three matches.

They have had five days to rejuvenate since their arrival in the city. Over the last two days, the team has practiced under lights and in the afternoon, in their bid to acclimatise to the conditions.

“I think the first impressions from everyone was cool, it is a pretty small venue. Boundaries are short here and the conditions for the game look very good,” Pakistan head coach Grant Bradburn told PCB Digital in the lead-up to the game.

“We have done our homework on the venue – it is quite a high scoring venue that probably relates more to the boundary size, which is 63-64 meters. The batters really enjoyed the opportunity to get on some true surfaces and the bowlers enjoyed it too as there is a fair bit of bounce.

“It is going to be a venue where the batters are going to really enjoy getting in on and the bowlers are also going to be really asked some serious questions. I do not think there is going to be a lot of margin for error on this wicket … As a bowling attack, you know, we haven’t been quite as accurate as we would like to be in recent times and this venue is going to demand some discipline and accuracy.”

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

Though the match against India at Ahmedabad did not produce favourable results, Bradburn believes that it provided some crucial learnings from which the team will benefit in the tournament.

“There is always pressure on the team to win. When we do not, we critique our performances very, very closely and we’ve done that over the last couple of days, too. I think the experiences from Ahmedabad were fantastic.

“It was a great opportunity to learn and grow from the whole experience of playing in front of a very large, hostile crowd. It is unusual to play in front of a crowd, which is pretty much, you know, solely there for the opposition. However, it was nice to hear some silence as well at times when we were batting well.

“We had some really good honest conversations yesterday as a group talking about how we wanted to take the game on more and we did have an opportunity to be a little bit more assertive with the bat earlier on.

“As a result, we put ourselves under a little bit of pressure and then you know, we just didn’t get enough to really put pressure on in the second innings. That, however, doesn’t take away from the fact that as a group, we’ve also acknowledged that we didn’t put enough balls in good areas.

“We have also had some wonderful insights about the venues too – the ball is scuffing up quite quickly and looks like it is dog chewed after about 20 overs. It obviously means the ball becomes a little bit softer, which makes it difficult to score in the later stages.

“That also brings in more reverse [swing] which plays into our hands. So all of those elements are a good learning for us that we are taking on-board.”

Australia have had an uncharacteristic start to their World Cup campaign, going down against India and South Africa before bouncing back with a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

They have had an upper hand over Pakistan in the 50-over World Cup, winning six out of 10 matches. But, the most recent outing in the format between the two sides saw Pakistan come on top with a 2-1 win in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League series.

Undaunted by the past record, Pakistan, Bradburn said, are all set for the Australia challenge and are eager to make it ICC World Cup 2023 campaign to 3-1 before they move to Chennai for their back-to-back contests against Afghanistan and South Africa.

“It is a collection of the 150 best cricketers on the planet and there’s 10 worthy teams here,” he said.

“So, and as we are seeing in the last week, anyone can beat anyone. We have done our homework on Australia. We know what they can contain, we know their style of play, we know what their strengths are and we know where we might be able to exploit them.

“But, most of all, we are looking into the mirror and making sure that we’re true to ourselves by making sure that we are challenging each other in the right way.

“We are a tight unit and we back everyone in this group, but we are certainly becoming more comfortable to challenge the performances and roles in the different phases of the game.

“We acknowledge as a group that we haven’t put together the true performance across all three disciplines yet but we know when we do that, it’s a beautiful thing.”
