Sri Lanka may get a boost ahead of ICC World Cup 2023 clash against Pakistan

Sri Lanka received a big boost ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against Pakistan, scheduled on Tuesday as Maheesh Theekshana is likely to return to the side after recovering from an injury.

Maheesh Theekshana got selected in Sri Lanka’s ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 squad despite suffering from a hamstring injury in the Asia Cup 2023.

He did not play the side’s opening game of the tournament against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.

Sri Lanka’s assistant coach Naveed Nawaz said Maheesh Theekshana made a full recovery and should play the fixture.

“He’s fit and should play tomorrow,” Naveed Nawaz said. “Didn’t want to risk him in the first game against medical advice but he should be ready here.”

The assistant coach said they side should expect themselves to be under pressure against Pakistan as well.

“It’s simple, we expect to face similar pitches,” he said. “They’re not going to change; it’s going to be batting-friendly mostly. We have to look at our execution and see how we could’ve pulled back another 50-60 runs.

“We have to keep the group positive, that is most important. It’s a long tournament, we’re going to be playing, traveling and doing other things for over a month. We just have to take the learnings from each game and move forward.”

Pakistan and Sri Lanka started their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign on different notes.

Pakistan defeated the Netherlands by 81 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday, whereas Sri Lanka lost to South Africa by 102 runs the following day.

Pakistan eye back-to-back victories in ICC World Cup 2023

Pakistan had a perfect start to their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign with a thumping 81-run win over the Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium thanks to some outstanding performances.

Pakistan found themselves three down for 38 after being inserted, but a sparkling partnership worth 120 off 114 between Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel, the World Cup debutant, rebuilt the innings before all-rounders Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz put together a 64-run stand for the seventh wicket to lift their side to 286.

While Rizwan made 68 off 75, which was his seventh half-century of the year, it was Saud, playing only his seventh ODI, who got the limelight with a 52-ball 68, hitting nine fours and a maximum.

The next best score in the innings came from Nawaz, who made 39 off 43, and Shadab scored 32 off 34.

There were initial hiccups in Pakistan’s defence as half-centurions Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede added 70 off 76 for the third wicket, before Haris Rauf’s two wickets in three balls thumped Pakistan’s authority in the contest.

Hasan Ali, returning to ODI cricket after a gap of over 15 months, finished with two wickets, and Shaheen Afridi, Iftikhar Ahmed, Nawaz and Shadab picked up a wicket each.

Pakistan managed the net run rate of 1.620 for rolling out the opposition in 41 overs and occupied the third spot in the ICC World Cup 2023 standings.

Bas de Leede, who made 67 off 68, threatened to take the proceedings further deep that could have lowered Pakistan’s net run rate but a Nawaz ripper undid the right-hander in the 34th over.

They play Sri Lanka tomorrow in what will be their final outing in Hyderabad in the ICC World Cup 2023 and are eager to leave the city with two wins in two matches.

Speaking to PCB Digital ahead of the contest, Nawaz, said, “It is very important to start a big tournament on a positive note and that is what we were looking for.”

“We have played two practice matches here and our tournament opener in Hyderabad. It all, however, boils down to playing good cricket on the day and executing your skills perfectly. We are hopeful of carrying the momentum that we have gained by beating the Netherlands and finishing the Hyderabad leg with a win.”

That Pakistan were able to set a defendable score after initial dismissals was because of some brilliant rearguard partnerships in the middle and lower-middle order.

While reflecting on those partnerships and Saud’s incredible half-century, Nawaz said, “It was an outstanding partnership between Rizwan and Saud Shakeel considering the circumstances it came in.

“Saud played some brilliant counterattacking cricket after going in at 40 for three [38 for three] and it gave us a good stand.

“Shadab and I were looking to take the innings deep and the plan was to keep building the partnership till the 45th, 46th over and then finish on an attacking note. Unfortunately, we could not provide that finishing but we were able to get a good total for the team.”

After that 27th over by Haris, Pakistan had a tight grip on the match, but de Leede continued to provide resistance. He was finally undone, thanks to a scorcher from Nawaz that had everything that a left-arm orthodox can imagine.

“It is a dream ball of any left-arm orthodox to bring the ball in with drift and then turn it away,” Nawaz, who finished with figures of one for 31 from seven overs, said. “Bas de Leede is a good all-rounder and he was looking good at that time. His wicket was crucial.”

Nawaz also shares the notion that the bowlers will need to be disciplined here in India to get rewards in conditions which are largely tilted towards the batters, but he feels that the spinners will have a role to play as the tournament goes on.

“Most of the venues in India are more batting conducive, but the pitches will offer more turn as the tournament will progress,” he said. “Boundaries are a bit smaller here which is why it is tough here for the bowlers, but we have tried to adjust according to the conditions … I have gotten confidence from bowling in the last match and I want to build on it so I can deliver my best according to the team’s requirements.”

Though Pakistan enjoy an impeccable record against Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup since 1975 defeating them on all seven occasions, the Islanders have recently outdone them.

They lost a last-ball thriller in Colombo in the One-Day iteration of the Asia Cup last month and faced back-to-back defeats in the tournament’s T20 edition last year, with the last of the two matches being the final.

Nawaz, however, suggested that the past results would have no bearing when the two sides meet tomorrow. “They have won important matches against us in the last one year in white-ball cricket, but that is in the past and it should not affect us. We will go in with ‘new game, new day’ and positive mindset on Tuesday.”

ICC World Cup 2023: Santner takes five as New Zealand thump Netherlands

HYDERABAD: Mitchell Santner recorded the first five-wicket haul of the ICC World Cup 2023 to power New Zealand to a resounding 99-run victory over the Netherlands on Monday.

Set to chase a daunting 323, the Netherlands could score 223 despite Colin Ackermann’s half-century.

Ackermann waged a lone battle for the Netherlands with a gutsy half-century.

The right-handed batter put on notable partnerships with Max O’Dowd, Bas de Leede and Teja Nidamanuru before finally perishing in the 33rd over, resulting in the Dutch side slip to 157/7.

He top-scored for the Netherlands with a 73-ball 69 which featured five boundaries.

Captain Scott Edwards (30) was the next notable run-getter for the Netherlands, followed by Sybrand Engelbrecht (29) while the rest of their batters failed against a strong New Zealand bowling attack.

Mitchell Santner spearheaded New Zealand’s attack with the ball, taking a five-fer while Matt Henry bagged three.

Put into bat first, New Zealand posted a commendable total of 322/7 in the allotted 50 overs, courtesy of Will Young, Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham’s half-centuries.

New Zealand got off to a flying start after being invited to bat by the Netherlands as they raced to 67 runs in 12 overs before losing Devon Conway (32).

Opening batter Will Young was then joined by Rachin Ravindra and together they knitted a solid 77-run stand in 84 balls.

Paul van Meekeren broke the partnership in the 27th over, as Will Young departed after scoring 70 off 80 with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes.

Rachin Ravindra (51) was the next man to depart after a 41-run partnership with Daryl Mitchell, who was then joined by the captain Tom Latham on the crease.

Mitchell (48) and Latham then scored 53 off 47 for the fourth wicket before Paul van Meekeren returned and broke another partnership as he bowled the former at a total of 238.

The Dutch bowlers took two quick wickets to reduce the Kiwis to 254-6, however, Latham stayed firm on his end to score 53 runs off 46 deliveries with the help of six boundaries and one six.

Latham departed after being out stumped off Aryan Dutt leaving New Zealand at 293-7, however, Michael Santner’s quick cameo helped New Zealand to 322 runs in their allocated 50 overs.

Santner gave a huge push to the total on the final delivery of the innings when he smoked two sixes off the no-ball and then on the free-hit bowled by Bas de Leede.

He scored 36 off 17, while Matt Henry remained not out at 10 off four.

Meanwhile, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren and Roelof van der Merwe picked two wickets for the Netherlands.

ICC World Cup 2023: Ben Stokes unlikely to play against Bangladesh

England all-rounder Ben Stokes is likely to miss England’s second match in the ICC World Cup 2023 against Bangladesh on October 10 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association [HPCA] Stadium in Dharamsala.

Stokes is nursing a sore left hip and did not feature in England’s crushing nine-wicket loss against New Zealand in the opening game of the ICC World Cup 2023.

New Zealand batters Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra scored dominant centuries to power their side to a thumping victory with 82 balls to spare while chasing 283.

England captain Jos Buttler hinted at Stokes’ possible absence from the game against Bangladesh during a press conference.

“It’s good to see him [Ben Stokes] back in the nets and building back towards full fitness, but he’s probably unlikely for tomorrow,” said Buttler.

Ben Stokes came out of ODI retirement in August to participate in England’s defence of the ongoing ICC Men’s World Cup as a specialist batter owing to his chronic knee injury.

He made a brilliant comeback to ODI cricket in the series against New Zealand prior to the ICC World Cup 2023. During the third match of the series, he broke the record for the highest score by an England men’s player in ODIs, as he scored 182 off 124 balls.

Following tomorrow’s game against Bangladesh, the defending champions England will face Afghanistan in their third match of the ICC World Cup 2023 on October 15 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

ICC World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka penalised after South Africa thrashing

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday, fined Sri Lanka Men’s cricket team for maintaining a slow over run-rate in their ICC World Cup 2023 fixture against South Africa.

“Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Dasun Shanaka’s side was found to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration,” said ICC in a press release.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.”

Sri Lankan captain Shanaka accepted the charges imposed by the apex cricket body and thus waived the need for any formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf levelled the charge.

Notably, Sri Lanka succumbed to a massive 102-run defeat in their first match of the ICC World Cup 2023, courtesy of a combined bowling effort after a record-setting batting onslaught by South Africa.

Chasing a daunting total of 429, Sri Lanka offered notable fightback as they scored 326 runs all out in response.

Wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis scripted Sri Lanka’s flying start to the pursuit despite an early blow in the form of Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a seven-ball duck.

Mendis knitted a one-sided 66-run partnership with Kusal Perera, who could contribute a mere seven before falling in the eighth over.

Mendis’ early fireworks were shortlived after Perera’s departure as he headed back to the pavilion in the 13th over after providing Sri Lanka with a perfect start with a blistering half-century.

He scored 76 in just 42 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and eight sixes.

Charith Asalanka then took the reigns of Sri Lanka’s run chase with a brisk knock and was also involved in a crucial 82-run partnership with captain Dasun Shanaka before finally perishing in the 32nd over.

He top-scored for the Asian side with a 65-ball 79, peppered with eight boundaries and four sixes.

Later, it was captain Shanaka, who kept hopes of pulling off a miraculous run chase alive with his sensational half-century but his efforts eventually turned out to be insufficient as Sri Lanka fell well short of it despite handy contributions from their tailenders.

Shanaka remained a notable run-getter for his side with 68. His 62-ball knock included six boundaries and three sixes.

Gerald Coetzee led the bowling attack for South Africa with 3/68 in his nine overs while Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen bagged two each.

Put into bat first, South Africa caused carnage at Arun Jaitley Stadium here as they racked up a mammoth 428/5 against Sri Lanka — the highest team total in a World Cup game.

The Proteas had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their captain Temba Bavuma (8) in the second over with just 10 runs on the board.

Following the early slump, Rassie van der Dussen joined Quinton de Kock at the crease to launch an astounding recovery.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

The pair batted sensibly and kept the scoreboard ticking amid their marathon 204-run partnership with both scoring centuries.

The second-wicket partnership pushed Sri Lanka to the backfoot before Matheesha Pathirana finally struck for the Islanders by dismissing de Kock in the 31st over.

The left-handed opener scored 100 off 84 balls with the help of 12 boundaries and three sixes.

Coming out to bat at number four, Aiden Markram turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting and took the reigns of South Africa’s innings.

He put on a brief 50-run partnership with van der Dussen, who perished after top-scoring for South Africa with a 110-ball 108 which featured 13 boundaries and two sixes.

Watch ICC World Cup 2023 Live on ARY ZAP

Markram was then involved in yet another crunch partnership for South Africa when he put together a 78-run stand with Heinrich Klaassen, who played a quickfire 32-run cameo in just 20 balls.

The right-handed batter converted his dominant knock into the fastest World Cup century — a record previously held by Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien (50 balls) — as he reached the milestone in just 49 balls.

His sensational knock finally came to an end in the 48th over when South Africa were still 17 short of the 400-run mark. He smashed 106 in a mere 54 balls, laced up with 14 boundaries and three sixes.

Hard-hitting batter David Miller, with a little support from Marco Jansen’s seven-ball 12, bolstered South Africa’s total in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener with a quickfire 39 in 21 balls which included three boundaries and two sixes.

Dilshan Madushanka bagged two wickets while Kasun Rajitha, Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage picked one apiece for Sri Lanka, who had a game to forget with the ball.

ICC World Cup 2023: Bowlers star as India book Australia on 199

India launch triumphant ICC World Cup 2023 campaign at Australia’s disposal

CHENNAI: Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scored anchoring half-centuries after a disciplined performance by the bowlers as India edged Australia by six wickets in their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener on Sunday.

Set to chase a modest 200, India knocked off the winning runs for the loss of four wickets and 52 balls to spare.

The hosts, however, had a dismal start to their pursuit as they lost three batters with just two runs on the board as Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer all fell for duck.

Following the slump, KL Rahul joined Virat Kohli in the middle and the duo launched an astounding recovery.

Kohli and Rahul soaked in the pressure and put India in command with a magnificent 165-run partnership which lasted when Kohli fired his pull shot straight to Marnus Labuschagne at mid-wicket in the 38th over.

Star batter Virat Kohli fell short of his well-deserved century as he scored 85. His 116-ball knock featured six boundaries.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul held his ground firm and carried his bat all the way through to guide India to a hard-fought victory to launch their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a victory.

He also fell just shy of his century, scoring an unbeaten 97 in 115 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and two sixes.

Josh Hazlewood led the bowling attack for Australia with 3/38 in his nine overs while Mitchell Starck had a wicket to his name.

After opting to bat first, Australia lost their first wicket in the third over as Mitchell Marsh fell with only five runs on the board.

David Warner and Steve Smith then stabilised the innings with a partnership of 69, before Kuldeep Yadav grabbed a returning catch to send the former back to the pavilion.

Warner scored 47 off 52 with the help of six boundaries, becoming the fastest man to score 1000 World Cup runs in 19 innings.

Steve Smith followed him after anchoring through the innings with his 46 from 71 deliveries, featuring five boundaries before Ravindra Jadeja knocked his off-stump when Australia had 110 runs on the board.

Indian spinners took charge from there and rattled the Australian batting line, reducing them to 140-7 in the 37th over.

Mitchell Starc showed some resistance with two brief partnerships of 25 and 24 runs with Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa respectively.

Indian pacers then returned to the attack and picked the final three wickets to wrap Australian innings at 199.

Starc scored a gutsy knock of 28 runs from 35 balls with the help of two boundaries and one six.

Ravindra Jadeja topped the bowling charts with his aforementioned bowling figures, while Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each.

Famous pitch invader ‘Jarvo 69’ interrupts India-Australia World Cup fixture

CHENNAI: Serial pitch invader Daniel Jarvis, famously known as ‘Jarvo 69’ made a surprise return as he halted India’s ICC World Cup 2023 campaign opener against Australia at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

The much-anticipated ICC World Cup 2023 fixture between two dominant forces of world cricket, India and Australia, got off to an eventful start when the renowned English prankster Jarvo invaded the playing area, moments before the commencement of the action.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first and Jarvo somehow managed to trespass the fence around the stands and enter the field when the Indian team and the umpires were on the field.

He also got close to India’s star batter Virat Kohli, who, alongside match officials, escorted him off the field.

It was not the first time, ‘Jarvo 69’ had interrupted a game.

The English citizen had breached security and entered the pitch donning the Indian jersey, pretending to be an Indian player during the second Test match in Lord’s in August 2021.

Next month, Jarvo was arrested for his suspicious assault of England batsman Jonny Bairstow on day two of the fourth England-India Test match at The Oval in London.

During the play, Jarvo came running past fast-bowler Umesh Yadav and threw the ball at Ollie Pope at the striker’s end. He lost control of himself and went crashing into Bairstow at the non-striker’s end.

For the unversed, the prankster is banned for life from watching a cricket match in Headingley, where he entered the ground as a batsman during the third Test between India and England.

Yorkshire Cricket Club’s spokesperson had confirmed that a lifetime ban and financial penalty were imposed on the serial pitch invader for violating security measures.
