Kyle Jamieson replaces injured Matt Henry in New Zealand’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad

New Zealand have named right-arm pace bowler Kyle Jamieson as a replacement for fellow pace bowler Matt Henry, who has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2023 due to the hamstring injury he picked up during the match against South Africa.

The 31-year-old Henry broke down midway through his sixth over during the 190-run thrashing by South Africa in the ICC World Cup 2023 group game in Pune on Wednesday.

An MRI scan revealed he had a grade-two tear of his right hamstring, with the recovery time estimated at between two and four weeks.

“We are gutted for him,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said in Bengaluru, where his injury-hit side faces a must-win clash with Pakistan on Saturday.

“Matt’s been a crucial part of our one-day side for a long time and to see him ruled out as we reach the business end of this tournament is immensely disappointing.

“He’s consistently been ranked inside the ICC top 10 ODI bowlers for the past few years, which is testament to his class and skills.”

New Zealand are fourth in the 10-team table but victories in their last two group games should see the 2019 runners-up into the semi-finals of ICC World Cup 2023.

Jamieson arrived in Bengaluru late on Thursday and was expected to train with the team on Friday.

The towering 28-year-old, who underwent back surgery in February, was previously with the New Zealand squad in India as cover for Tim Southee.

Jamieson has taken 14 wickets in 13 ODIs and has so far enjoyed greater success in Test cricket.

But his height and ability to move the ball could pose problems in India, with Stead saying: “We’re fortunate to have a player of the class of Kyle waiting in the wings.

“His skills and physical attributes always make him a threat with the ball and it’s an added bonus he was able to train with us in the first two weeks of the tournament.”

New Zealand have been beset by injuries during ICC World Cup 2023 with star batsman Kane Williamson (thumb) and all-rounder Mark Chapman (thigh) both currently sidelined.

But victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their last two pool games should still see them through to the last four in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Australia prepare to strike final blow on old enemy England

Australia can deliver the final blow to old enemy England’s dismal ICC World Cup 2023 campaign on Saturday with memories of their acrimonious Ashes series still fresh.

Jos Buttler’s defending champions sit rock bottom of the 10-nation group with one win in six games, requiring a mathematical miracle to squeeze into the semi-finals.

On Saturday, they face an Australian team who come into the game at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad with four straight wins.

However, the five-time winners will be without two key players, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh.

England’s most recent loss was a 100-run thrashing at the hands of unbeaten India in Lucknow where coach Matthew Mott faced down questions over the team’s brittle batting line-up and claims of dressing room unrest.

Opening batsman Dawid Malan slammed reports of Mott, who had conceded the ICC World Cup 2023 campaign was over for the 2019 champions, losing the confidence of the players.

“Motty is not the one walking out on the field,” Malan told BBC.

“As players, we need to take responsibility when we cross that rope. We are being given everything we need to perform. The facilities and work, everything is being done as it always has been.”

He added: “It is really hard to sum up. We just can’t seem to get anything going at the moment or any rhythm or momentum. We’re not used to being in that position.”

England’s only win in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 so far was against Bangladesh.

They lost to Afghanistan while in their last two games, their batting folded for 156 (against Sri Lanka) and then 129 (India).

Defeat to Australia will not only knock them out of contention for a semi-final spot but also put them in danger of missing the 2025 Champions Trophy.

England must finish in the top seven places to qualify for the 50-over tournament in Pakistan.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be done for that but I’d love the guys to play in that,” the 36-year-old Malan said. “Hopefully we can find the momentum and finish the World Cup on a high.”

The two fierce rivals played out an exhilarating and often bitter Ashes this year with the five-match Test series ending 2-2.

Australia hold the aces in the 50-over format with 87 wins over England in 155 matches and in nine World Cup meetings the Aussies remain 6-3 ahead.

But when they met in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals, England triumphed and went on to win their maiden World Cup.

Australia started this World Cup with two losses but bounced back and are fresh from their record 309-run hammering of the Netherlands last week.

But the former champions have been dealt two blows after Maxwell fell off a golf buggy and suffered concussion while Marsh has left for home due to personal reasons.

Maxwell blasted the fastest World Cup century off just 40 balls to tear into the Dutch attack in New Delhi.

His omission paves the way for Marcus Stoinis to return.

Marsh has amassed 225 runs including a classy 121 in a 259-run opening partnership with David Warner against Pakistan.

Coach Andrew McDonald said Maxwell’s injury does leave them “a fraction exposed at the back end” but Stoinis “does become available”.

Cameron Green also comes into the picture for the all-important match with Marsh’s place up for grabs.

Marnus Labuschagne is expected to retain his place despite his 18 in the team’s previous win — a thrilling last-ball finish in Dharamsala — over New Zealand.

The middle-order batsman said England remain a “dangerous” team and “let’s not get sucked into how they’re performing”.

Australia, led by Pat Cummins, are currently in third spot and well-placed to reach the semi-finals after winning four games.

India inflict second-biggest World Cup defeat on Sri Lanka

MUMBAI: India pacers decimated the Sri Lankan batting attack after Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer to power the home side to hand Sri Lanka the second-biggest World Cup defeat in the 33rd match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Set to chase a daunting 358-run target, the Sri Lankan batting lineup unfolded at a mere 55 in 19.4 overs.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj gave India a dominant start in the defence as they ran through Sri Lanka’s top order, reducing them to 3/4 in the fourth over.

Charith Assalanka and Angelo Mathews attempted to pull their side of trouble but Mohammed Shami spoiled their plans with a ruthless spell which yielded five wickets and eventually booked Sri Lanka on the meagre total.

Kasun Rajitha remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka in their dismal show with the bat, followed by Maheesh Theekshana and Mathews scoring 12 each.

The rest of their batters failed to make it into the double figures.

Shami led the bowling attack for India with 5/18, followed by Siraj’s 3/16 while Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja made one scalp each.

After inviting India to bat, Dilshan Madushanka drew first blood for Sri Lanka as he castled Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the innings after he sent the first one for four.

Virat Kohli then joined Shubman Gill and together they scored 189 runs for the second wicket, completing their half-centuries.

Shubman Gill appeared to be in a position to score his maiden World Cup ton, while Virat Kohli was eyeing his 49th ODI century to tie Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds.

However, Dilshan Madushanka rained on their parade as he returned to the attack and removed both batters in consecutive overs.

Shubman Gill top-scored with a run-a-ball 92, featuring 11 boundaries and two sixes, meanwhile, Virat Kohli scored 88 runs from 92 deliveries with the help of as many boundaries as his partner.

Shreyas Iyer, came down to bat at number four and added 60 runs for the fourth wicket with KL Rahul, who scored 21 runs during his 19-ball stay at the crease.

Iyer added another 57 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket but was dismissed by Madushanka after hitting back-to-back sixes.

Iyers’s blistering knock of 82 runs from 56 balls featured three boundaries and six sixes.

Jadeja on the other end scored a brief 35-run cameo off 24 balls before being run-out on the last ball of the innings.

Other than Madushanka’s five wickets, Dushmantha Chameera was the only bowler to pick a wicket for Sri Lanka, while two batters got run-out.

New Zealand call up Kyle Jamieson as cover for Matt Henry

New Zealand have called Kyle Jamieson into their ICC World Cup 2023 squad as cover while fellow pace bowler Matt Henry awaits the results of a scan on a hamstring injury.

Jamieson, previously with the squad in India as cover for Tim Southee, will arrive in Bengaluru late on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s pool game against Pakistan.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that with Henry awaiting the results of a scan on his right hamstring and fast bowler Lockie Ferguson recovering from an Achilles injury, the Black Caps had to summon cover.

They have two group games remaining and a place in the semi-finals of ICC World Cup 2023 is still up for grabs.

“The severity of Matt’s injury, combined with a short turnaround to Pakistan, meant we couldn’t risk being a bowler down for Saturday,” Stead said on Thursday.

“Matt’s been a world-class performer for us in ODI cricket for the past two World Cup cycles so we’ve got our fingers crossed for the scan results later today,” he added.

Stead was confident it would not take long for the towering 28-year-old Kyle Jamieson, who has taken 14 wickets in 13 ODIs, to re-adjust to Indian conditions.

“Kyle’s on his way over as we speak and we look forward to welcoming him back into the group,” he said.

Stead added: “He’ll likely train with us on Friday with a mind to being available for Saturday’s game.”

New Zealand have been beset by injuries during ICC World Cup 2023 with star batsman Kane Williamson (thumb) and all-rounder Mark Chapman (thigh) both currently sidelined.

The 2019 World Cup finalists endured a 190-run thrashing by South Africa on Thursday, with Henry breaking down midway through his sixth over.

Their third defeat of this World Cup meant New Zealand slipped to fourth in the 10-team table with eight points, two ahead of Pakistan as well as Afghanistan, who have a game in hand.

But victories over Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their last two pool games should still see them through to the last four in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Mitchell Marsh returns home from ICC World Cup 2023 for personal reasons

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has returned home because of personal reasons and is out of the ICC World Cup 2023 indefinitely, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

His absence is another blow ahead of the weekend clash with England in Ahmedabad after Glenn Maxwell was ruled out with a concussion following a fall from a golf cart.

“A timeline on his return to the squad is to be confirmed,” Cricket Australia said on social platform X (formerly Twitter).

It is not clear whether a replacement for Mitchell Marsh will be called up to the 15-man squad.

The 32-year-old, Australia’s T20 captain, has been in decent form at the ICC World Cup 2023, compiling 225 runs at 37.50 so far.

That was boosted by a classy 121 in a 259-run opening partnership with David Warner against Pakistan.

With both Marsh and Maxwell out, Marcus Stoinis or Cameron Green look set to face Jos Buttler’s struggling England, who have won just one game from six so far to prop up the 10-team standings.

Australia, currently third, have won four consecutive matches after a slow start to their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign.

Maxwell is unavailable under concussion protocols after falling off the back of the buggy in the dark after playing a round of golf on Monday as players took a break during the marathon tournament in India.

Australia suffer major setback ahead of World Cup clash against England

In-form all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of Australia’s ICC World Cup 2023 clash against England, head coach Andrew McDonald said on Wednesday.

According to the details, Maxwell suffered a concussion due to falling off a golf cart this week.

He fell on his back off the buggy after playing a round of golf, ahead of his side’s all-important contest against defending champions England on Saturday.

As per Cricket Australia’s concussion protocols, Glenn Maxwell’s condition will be monitored for a few days.

“He’s doing fine, he’ll start some light exercises today and we feel as though it will be a reasonably straightforward return to play protocol,” McDonald told reporters.

“I suppose the fortunate part was there was no other injury sustained which could have been a lot worse than it is. I think it rattled everyone to be fair once it came to the conclusion there was a concussion and he was going to miss a game.

“There was nothing untoward in the behaviour throughout the day, it was a clear-cut accident. Unfortunately, it’s compromised what we are doing as a team.”

For the unversed, Maxwell missed Australia’s away series against South Africa before the ICC World Cup 2023 with an ankle issue.

He also broke his leg, last November, in a freak accident at a birthday party in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell has turned up to be a crucial asset for Australia with his hard-hitting ability and as a disciplined off-spinner.

In his side’s ICC World Cup 2023 fixture against the Netherlands, Glenn Maxwell stunned the World Cup by smashing the fastest World Cup hundred.

The right-handed batter decimated the Dutch bowlers to bring up a 40-ball hundred.

He finished at a 44-ball 106 that featured nine boundaries and eight sixes.

Glenn Maxwell also became the first batter in ODI history to score a century after having faced the first ball after the 40th over.

Ruthless South Africa set World Cup record

South Africa set a World Cup record for the most sixes by a team in a single edition during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 fixture against 2019 finalists New Zealand at Pune’s Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

Proteas struck 15 sixes in the fixture against New Zealand to best England’s record 76 sixes. The defending champions had hit 75 maximums in the 2019 edition.

South Africa, who are eyeing their first 50-over World Cup title, gave a daunting target of 358 runs in today’s game.

Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen’s centuries powered South Africa to post a massive total of 357/4 against New Zealand.

The Proteas had a contrasting start to their innings as their captain Temba Bavuma (24) perished cheaply with just 38 runs on the board.

Following an early blow, van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock joined forces to dominate New Zealand bowlers and added 200 runs for the second wicket before experienced pacer Tim Southee finally got rid of the latter.

De Kock scored 114 in 116 deliveries with the help of 10 boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, van der Dussen stood his ground firm and batted till the 48th before he, too, fell victim to Southee.

The right-handed batter top-scored for South Africa with 133 in 118 balls, smashing nine boundaries and five sixes.

Besides them, hard-hitting batter David Miller scored a quickfire half-century to further boost South Africa’s total.

Miller scored 53 in just 30 deliveries, laced up with two boundaries and four sixes.

Later, Heinrich Klaasen (15*) and Aiden Markram (6*)smashed a six each.

New Zealand, in pursuit of a daunting 358-run total, are struggling against South African pacers as they could manage to score 90/4 in 18 overs.

PUNE: In-form wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock on Wednesday, etched his name into the record books with a sensational century against New Zealand in the ICC World Cup 2023.

De Kock, who scored his fourth century in the ongoing mega event, has now scored the most runs (545) by a wicketkeeper batter in a single edition of the World Cup.

He brought up his 21st ODI century in 103 balls and went on to score 114 in 116 deliveries, laced up with 10 boundaries and three sixes.

The left-handed batter surpassed legendary Sri Lankan batter Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 543 runs, which he achieved in the 2015 World Cup.

Furthermore, Quinton de Kock, with four centuries in the ICC World Cup 2023 also joined Sangakkara in the list of most hundreds in a World Cup and is now only behind India’s Rohit Sharma, who scored five in the previous edition.
