Bumrah claims five as India seize advantage in first South Africa Test

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah claimed a five-wicket haul as India bowled out South Africa for 159 on the opening day of the first cricket Test on Friday.

Electing to bat in Kolkata at the start of the two-match series, reigning world Test champions South Africa lost regular wickets and were bowled out in 55 overs.

In reply, India were 37-1 at stumps, trailing South Africa by 122 runs on a pitch that looked good for batting.

Left-arm quick Marco Jansen removed Yashasvi Jaiswal for 12 when the left-handed opener chopped a delivery onto his stumps.

With the red ball in use, even with the floodlights on, it grew so dark that play was halted early at the iconic Eden Gardens. KL Rahul was on 13, and left-handed Washington Sundar was on six.

The visitors had suffered a setback even before a ball was bowled when their premier fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, was ruled out with a rib injury.

Rabada is under observation after he sustained the injury in the team’s first training session on Tuesday and failed a fitness test on the morning of the opener.

Bumrah, who took his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, struck twice in the third over after tea.

After a 57-run stand between openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, South Africa faltered against the Indian attack.

Kuldeep Yadav — one of the four spinners in the Indian XI — and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj took two wickets each.

Opening batter Markram took 23 deliveries to get off the mark, but did so with a glorious straight drive for four off Siraj.

Spin was introduced in the eighth over with Axar Patel bowling his left-arm orthodox, but Markram kept up the attack.

Bumrah (5-27) broke the opening stand when he bowled left-hander Rickelton for 23 to raise the noise of a crowd of around 36,000.

Bumrah then produced a gem to send back Markram, caught behind for 31 on a rising ball that hit the glove, and returning wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant completed a diving catch.

Kuldeep kept up the bowling charge and had skipper Temba Bavuma caught at leg slip for three.

Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi — who both scored 24 — took the team past 100 and into lunch before Kuldeep trapped Mulder lbw with the batter attempting a reverse sweep off the left-arm wrist spinner.

Bumrah ended de Zorzi’s defiance l,bw and the batter, like Mulder, wasted a review. Both showed the ball hitting the stumps.

Wickets kept tumbling as Siraj picked two in the space of four balls, with Kyle Verreynne lbw for 16 and Jansen bowled for a duck.

India’s tennis star Sumit Nagal denied visa to China

NEW DELHI: India’s leading men’s tennis player Sumit Nagal has revealed that China denied him a visa just weeks before he was scheduled to compete in the Australian Open Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff in Sichuan, leaving his participation in jeopardy.

Nagal, ranked 275 in the world, took to the social media platform X on Monday to express his frustration over the development.

“I am supposed to fly to China soon to represent India at the Australian Open Playoff. But my visa was rejected without reason,” the 28-year-old wrote.

The week-long qualifying tournament, which begins on November 24, offers players from the Asia-Pacific region a chance to secure direct entry into the main draw of the 2026 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year.

Nagal, who reached a career-high ranking of 68 in 2024, has represented India at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics.

He previously featured in the main draw at Melbourne Park twice, losing in the first round earlier this year and in the second round the year before.

The tournament organisers have stated that players “should contact the Chinese consulate for information regarding visa requirements” and may request an official letter of invitation if needed.

However, they have yet to respond to inquiries from AFP regarding Nagal’s situation.

AFP also reached out to Nagal’s agent and China’s foreign ministry for comment, but received no immediate response.

The incident comes at a time when India and China are still working to rebuild ties strained by years of geopolitical tension.

The two nations, which share a long and disputed Himalayan border, only recently resumed direct flights after a five-year suspension following the pandemic and the deadly 2020 border clash in Ladakh.

India stunned by Kuwait, bow out of Hong Kong Sixes 2025

MONG KOK: A spirited Kuwait side handed a shock 27-run defeat to India, ending the Men in Blue’s campaign in Hong Kong Sixes 2025 at the Mission Road Ground on Saturday.

Batting first, Kuwait posted a challenging 106-4, powered by skipper Yasin Patel’s explosive 58 off just 14 balls, featuring eight sixes and two fours.

While chasing 107 runs, India’s innings collapsed dramatically, and once again, Yasin Patel was at the center stage.

Robin Uthappa fell on the very first ball, and captain Dinesh Karthik (8) was dismissed in the same over, falling victim to Patel. Stuart Binny (2) also departed cheaply, leaving India reeling at 12-3.

Abhimanyu Mithun (26) and Priyank Panchal (17) tried to stabilize the innings, but India was bowled out for just 79 runs.

The defeat ended India’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals; however, they still had a chance to stay alive in the Bowl finals, a consolation route for eliminated teams.

Unfortunately, India’s performance did not improve in the Bowl stage either.

India narrowly lost to the UAE despite a valiant 42-run partnership between Mithun (5) and Karthik (42*), allowing the UAE to chase 111-2 in just 5.5 overs.

Following that, Team India faced a humiliating defeat, losing by 92 runs to Nepal. Sundeep Jora contributed an unbeaten 47 runs off just 12 balls, while Rashid Khan scored 55 runs off 17 balls before retiring.

India managed just 45 runs in reply, with Bharat Chipli and Panchal the top scorers at 12 apiece. Rashid Khan also contributed with the ball, taking three wickets in a single over.

India clinch T20I series against Australia after fifth match abandoned

BRISBANE: India claimed a 2-1 win in the five-match T20I series against Australia after the final match was abandoned due to rain after just 4.5 overs here on Saturday.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, India’s openers Abhishek Sharma (23) and Shubman Gill (29) took the score to 52 for no loss before a thunderstorm forced the players from the field.

The torrential rain continued unabated, drenching the field in relentless sheets of water.

After much deliberation, the umpires finally made the tough call that no further play was possible, as the downpour rendered the pitch an unplayable quagmire.

It was the second match of the series to be ruined by rain, following a washout in Canberra on October 29.

On Thursday, India defeated Australia by 48 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series after posting 167-8 while batting first.

Shubman Gill played a crucial role with a solid contribution of 46 runs, while Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube added useful scores of 28 and 22 runs, respectively.

India’s bowlers then took centre stage, bundling Australia out for 119, with off-spinner Washington Sundar taking 3-3 in just eight balls to finish off the match.

‘Ice Broken’: Mohsin Naqvi, BCCI hold informal talks over Asia Cup trophy row

Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has announced that an informal meeting took place with Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), regarding the controversy surrounding the Asia Cup 2025 trophy, according to Indian media reports.

The ongoing issue began when India’s Suryakumar Yadav-led team won the Asia Cup final against Pakistan on September 28.

However, they declined to accept the winners’ trophy and medals from Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The presentation ceremony was delayed for nearly an hour as negotiations continued backstage before ending abruptly without a trophy handover, leaving the silverware stranded at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to the Press Trust of India (PTI) that ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja and CEO Sanjog Gupta facilitated discussions between the two boards during the recent ICC meetings held in Dubai.

“I was part of both the formal and informal ICC meetings. The issue wasn’t on the official agenda, but the ICC facilitated a separate discussion between myself and Mohsin Naqvi,” Saikia said.

“It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides participated cordially, and the ice has been broken. Now, different options are being explored to settle this issue amicably,” he added.

The Asia Cup trophy, which has remained under the supervision of ACC staff in Dubai, reportedly cannot be moved without Naqvi’s approval.

Both boards are now said to be working towards a mutually agreeable solution, with the possibility of a neutral ceremony being considered.

Rain plays spoilsport as India edge Pakistan in Hong Kong Sixes

MONG KOK: Rain robbed Pakistan of a potential comeback as India claimed a narrow two-run win via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method in a pulsating Hong Kong Sixes clash at the Mission Road Ground on Friday.

In pursuit of 87, Pakistan came out firing with Khawaja Nafay leading the charge.

The right-hander flicked Abhimanyu Mithun for four before launching two consecutive sixes to set the tone. With 18 runs coming off the opening over, Pakistan looked well in control of the chase.

However, Stuart Binny struck back in the following over after being hit for a six by Maaz Sadaqat, dismissing him for seven.

Despite the setback, Nafay kept Pakistan afloat, striking Shahbaz Nadeem for a boundary and a six in the third over to take his team to 41-1.

Just when momentum seemed to be shifting towards Pakistan, the rain arrived, halting play and ultimately deciding the contest.

At the time of interruption, India were ahead on the DLS calculations, sealing a two-run victory in a game that promised a thrilling finish.

Earlier, India’s top order set a strong platform with Robin Uthappa and Bharat Chipli attacking from the start.

Uthappa struck two fours and three sixes in his 28 off 12 before falling to Mohammad Shahzad, who picked up two wickets in a fine over to peg India back.

Despite the flurry of wickets, skipper Dinesh Karthik’s quickfire cameo, highlighted by a towering six, helped India post a competitive 86-4 in their allotted overs.

Chipli contributed 24 off 13, while Shahzad was Pakistan’s standout bowler with two crucial strikes.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan began their Hong Kong Sixes campaign on a strong note as captain Abbas Afridi scored an impressive half-century to secure a thrilling victory over Kuwait.

Chasing a daunting 124 in six overs, Pakistan turned the contest into a power-hitting exhibition, thanks to Afridi’s brutal 55 off just 12 balls, a knock laced with one four and eight towering sixes.

Clinical India rout Australia to take 2-1 lead in T20I series

India took a 2-1 lead in their T20 series against Australia with a 48-run demolition of the home side on Queensland’s Gold Coast on Thursday.

After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, India reached 167-8 thanks to a well-made 46 from Shubman Gill and useful contributions from Abhishek Sharma (28) and Shivam Dube (22).

India’s bowlers then took centre stage, bundling Australia out for 119, with off-spinner Washington Sundar taking 3-3 in just eight balls to finish off the match.

India would have gone into the innings break hoping for a bigger score than 167, but the total proved too much for the Australians, who started brightly but fell away alarmingly after reaching 67-1 in the ninth over.

The visitors will now head to Brisbane on Sunday, hoping to clinch the five-match series after the opening game in Canberra was washed out.

India had looked like reaching an imposing score when openers Abhishek and Gill took on the Australian attack in the early overs.

The pair put on 56 off just 6.4 overs with little trouble before Abhishek, who had smashed a huge six off leg-spinner Adam Zampa two balls earlier, tried a second time only to be caught by Tim David on the long-on boundary.

Dube joined Gill and continued to score freely against Zampa, but he found the pace bowling harder to handle and was bowled by Nathan Ellis to leave India 88-2.

Ellis claimed his second when he bowled Gill with India 121-3.

Any chance of a really big score disappeared four runs later when Yadav was caught on the boundary for 20, and the rest of the batting fell away.

Australian openers Marsh (30) and Matthew Short (25) made a bright start, but India’s bowlers kept chipping away, snaring wickets at key moments to take control.

ICC suspends Haris Rauf for code of conduct breach

DUBAI: Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf has been banned for two matches by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for code of conduct breach during the Asia Cup 2025.

According to an ICC press release on Tuesday, the pacer earned four demerit points within 24 months due to multiple breaches of conduct due to incidents that occurred during the India-Pakistan clashes on September 14, 21, and 28.

“Following a hearing conducted by ICC Match Referee Richie Richardson, Haris Rauf (Pakistan) was again found guilty of a breach of Article 2.21. He was fined 30 per cent of his match fee and received two additional demerit points,” the press release said.

“This takes Rauf’s total to four demerit points within a 24-month period, resulting in two suspension points under the ICC’s disciplinary framework. In accordance with the Code, Rauf is therefore suspended for Pakistan’s ODI games against South Africa on 4 and 6 November 2025,” it added.

During the September 14 group-stage clash, Match Referee Richie Richardson found Rauf guilty of a breach of Article 2.21 and docked Rauf 30% of his match fee.

Rauf attracted attention while fielding near the boundary as he made gestures that depicted the action of bringing down a plane. This was interpreted as a mockery of India’s military action earlier this year.

He performed these gestures in response to Indian fans chanting “Kohli, Kohli,” referring to Virat Kohli’s famous sixes off Rauf during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav was also penalized 30 percent of his fee for the same offence, while Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan received an official warning and one demerit point.

Farhan, meanwhile, came under scrutiny for his unique half-century celebration, in which he mimicked firing a machine gun with his bat. The gesture was widely criticized as provocative.

The Indian women, who triumphed at the third attempt after finishing runners-up in 2005 and 2017, have already received $4.48 million in prize money from the International Cricket Council (ICC), a 239 percent increase from the $1.32 million awarded to Australia in 2022.

This edition of the Women’s World Cup boasted an overall purse of $13.88 million, eclipsing the total $10 million for the last edition of the men’s championship.

Fans celebrated the victory at home and on the streets, with crowds in Delhi waving Indian flags and setting off fireworks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the “historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports”.

Travis Head to miss remaining T20Is against India

Australia’s middle-order mainstay Travis Head has opted out of the final two T20Is against India, choosing instead to fine-tune his red-ball form ahead of the upcoming Ashes series by turning out for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield.

Head will feature in the Shield clash against Tasmania in Hobart next week, marking his first first-class appearance since Australia’s tour of the West Indies in July.

The move, largely driven by the left-hander himself, comes as he looks to regain rhythm in the longest format following a lean patch in white-ball cricket, where he’s managed a top score of just 31 in eight innings since his explosive 142 against South Africa in August.

A pillar of Australia’s Test setup, Head is expected to resume his No. 5 role, known for its counter-attacking spark in pressure situations.

Sources within Cricket Australia (CA) indicated that the decision was mutually supported, allowing Head to focus on red-ball preparation in match conditions rather than nets.

The upcoming Sheffield Shield round now promises to be a star-studded one, with several Test regulars returning to their state sides ahead of squad selection for the England series.

Josh Hazlewood, who left the T20I squad after the second game in Melbourne, will link up with Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon for New South Wales against Victoria.

Sean Abbott will also join them after the Hobart T20I, while Steven Smith, fresh off a classy 118 against Queensland, is confirmed for his second Shield appearance this season.

Meanwhile, Victoria are set to field Scott Boland after a short rest, and Cameron Green will represent Western Australia against Queensland, expected to resume bowling for the first time since the season opener.

Marnus Labuschagne is also likely to feature, seeking valuable time in the middle before his Test return, while Matt Renshaw continues to press for an opening berth.

For Tasmania, all-rounder Beau Webster and pacer Brendan Doggett will take the field alongside Alex Carey and Head, adding further international experience to the contest.
