Jasprit Bumrah named ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year

DUBAI: India’s fast bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year 2024 on Monday.

The right-arm fast bowler bagged the award due to his stellar bowling performances. He was an outlier in world test fast bowlers in the year 2024 keeping India in contention for the World Test Championship (WTC) final race.

Following a long absence due to a back injury in late 2023, Bumrah made a resounding return and carried his team’s bowling attack throughout the year.

The 31-year-old topped the wickets chart in Test cricket last year bagging 71 wickets in 13 matches at a ridiculous average of 14.92.

His best performance came in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia where he was the leading wicket-taker with 32 wickets at an average of 13.06.

”I am very much honoured to receive the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award,” Bumrah said after winning the prestigious award.

“Test cricket has always been a format I hold close to my heart, and to be recognised on this platform is truly special.”

Bumrah also became the first bowler in Test history to take 200 wickets with an average below 20 as he reached the milestone with an average of 19.4.

Three Indians named in Pat Cummins-led ICC Test Team of the Year 2024

DUBAI: Australia’s Pat Cummins has been named the captain of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Test Team of the Year 2024 on Friday, featuring India’s Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Cummins is the only Australian in the line-up, with four players from England, two from New Zealand and one from Sri Lanka.

Cummins has been named the captain of the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year for the second consecutive year. He earned this honor after leading Australia to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, overseeing victories against Pakistan, New Zealand, and India.

Not only has Cummins demonstrated outstanding leadership, but he has also made significant contributions with both bat and ball. In 2024, he took 37 wickets at an average of 24.02 and scored 306 runs, averaging 23.53.

India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal earns a spot at the top of the order after scoring 1,478 runs during the year at an impressive average of 54.74. His performance included double centuries in back-to-back Tests against England in February and a superb 161 against Australia in Perth.

His opening partner, Ben Duckett, played a crucial role in England’s Test success in 2024. Duckett’s aggressive batting established the foundation for England to post massive totals.

His consistency allowed him to finish as the third-highest run-scorer of 2024, behind his compatriot Joe Root and India’s Jaiswal. Overall, Duckett amassed 1,149 runs at an average of 37.06.

Century-makers litter the middle order, comprised of New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, English duo Joe Root and Harry Brook and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis.

Williamson notched 1,013 runs in 2024 at an average of almost 60, while Brook’s 1,100 calendar runs were headlined by a record knock of 317 in victory over Pakistan in October.

Mendis enjoyed a breakthrough year, hitting five centuries and becoming the fastest to 1,000 Test runs in 75 years, while the evergreen Root scored more Test runs (1,556) and recorded more centuries (6) than anyone else.

Jamie Smith earns a spot as the designated wicketkeeper in the Test Team of the Year, six months after making his Test debut for England, thanks to 637 runs in nine Tests which included a maiden hundred against Sri Lanka in August.

Captain Cummins is joined in the bowling group by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja of India, who boasted 527 runs and 48 wickets in his Test year. Also with 48 wickets is New Zealand’s Matt Henry, the pacer making impressive contributions against Australia, India and England.

Completing the list is top-ranked Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who excelled once more with the ball in hand, topping the wicket-taking charts with 71 wickets in 2024 at a sensational average of 14.92.

ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year 2024

Yashasvi Jaiswal (India), Ben Duckett (England), Kane Williamson (New Zealand), Joe Root (England), Harry Brook (England), Kamindu Mendis (Sri Lanka), Jamie Smith (England – Wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja (India), Pat Cummins (Australia – Captain), Matt Henry (New Zealand), Jasprit Bumrah (India)

Champions Trophy: Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness concerns delay India’s squad announcement

The Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) has reportedly requested an extension to submit their squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to fitness concerns of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

According to details, Indian selectors wish to assess the fitness reports of their ace fast bowler before confirming their squad for the mega event.

The sources close to BCCI stated that the fast bowler’s participation in the Champions Trophy is now in doubt due to a diagnosed back injury, which he experienced during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney.

For the unversed, Jasprit Bumrah, who was leading the Indian team in the fifth Test after Rohit Sharma was rested, left the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) midway through the second session on day two.

It was later revealed that he was suffering from back spasms and rushed to hospital to undergo scans. Notably, Bumrah was not named in the ODI series against England due to concerns over his fitness.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Mohammed Shami returned to India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against England after more than a year’s break due to injury.

Shami, 34, last played for India in the 50-over World Cup final in November 2023 and recently participated in a few domestic matches to mark his return to competitive cricket.

India T20 squad to face England: Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (vice-capt), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (wk).

Jasprit Bumrah leaves Sydney Test with possible injury

SYDNEY: India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah left the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) midway through the second session on day two of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia here on Saturday.

Bumrah, who was leading the Indian team in the fifth Test after Rohit Sharma was rested, was possibly headed for hospital scans.

He left the field shortly before lunch but reappeared after the break and bowled one over. But his speed was clearly down and he went off again.

TV pictures showed him in his training kit with medical staff, getting in a car and driving out of the ground. Commentators suggested he was going for scans for an unknown injury.

After the day’s play, Prasidh Krishna revealed that Bumrah was suffering from back spasms.

“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans,” Prasidh said. “The medical team is monitoring him. So we will know whenever the medical team gets back to us,” he said when asked if Bumrah would bowl in the final innings of the series.

The visitors need to win the match to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, with Bumrah their key strike bowler. Jasprit Bumrah has taken 2-33 so far in Australia’s first innings with the match finely poised.

ICC reveals nominees for Cricketer of the Year award

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday revealed the nominees for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for Men’s Cricketer of the Year, including Australia’s hard-hitting batter Travis Head and India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Travis Head and Jasprit Bumrah are joined by England’s formidable duo of Joe Root and Harry Brook, both of whom had a spectacular year with the bat in the longest format of cricket.

Root, the number-one ranked batter in Test cricket, has amassed a remarkable total of 1,556 runs from 17 matches, boasting an impressive average of 55.57 in 2024.

This year continued to solidify Root’s legacy in Test cricket, as he became the only player to score over a thousand runs in a calendar year for the fifth consecutive time.

Meanwhile, his compatriot Brook dazzled the cricketing world with a stunning maiden triple century in Pakistan in October, contributing to England’s third-highest total in Test history.

Over the course of the year, this rising star accumulated an impressive 1,100 runs in just 12 matches, averaging 55.00.

On the other hand, Australia’s Travis Head continued his exceptional form from 2023 into the current year.

Known for his big-match prowess, the left-handed batsman showcased an aggressive style in the T20 format, finishing as one of the top run-scorers at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

His prowess was evident as he racked up 539 runs in 15 innings with a phenomenal strike rate of 178.47. In the longer format, he maintained a solid performance, amassing 608 runs across nine Test matches at an average of 40.53, with a top score of 152.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah was in electrifying form across all formats this year, playing a pivotal role in his team’s significant victories, including conquering the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Bumrah claimed 15 wickets from eight matches, showcasing his skill in a thrilling final against South Africa where he grabbed crucial wickets.

His prowess extended to Test cricket as well, where he claimed an astounding 71 wickets in just 13 matches, underscoring his status as one of the leading fast bowlers in the game today.

How can India qualify for WTC final after Melbourne Test defeat against Australia?

MELBOURNE: India suffered a major blow to their chances of qualifying for the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) after suffering a thumping defeat in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia here on Monday.

India bundled for 155 with just 12.5 overs left in the match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as Australia claimed a thrilling 184-run victory to go 2-1 up in the five-match series.

Despite the heavy defeat, India are still in contention for a spot in the WTC final next year at Lord’s. Currently ranked No. 3 on the points table, India holds a Percentage of Points (PCT%) of 52.78, leaving them with a glimmer of hope.

To secure their qualification, India must triumph over Australia in the crucial fifth Test match, which is set to commence on January 3, 2025, at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

However, India will also need Sri Lanka to achieve victory over Australia in their two-match Test series, scheduled to begin on January 29, 2025, in Galle. A series win for Sri Lanka by either 2-0 or 1-0 would be essential for India’s chances.

If everything falls into place, India could conclude the WTC 2023-25 cycle with a PCT% of 55.26. In this scenario, Australia’s maximum PCT% could rise to 53.51, while Sri Lanka could finish with a maximum of 53.85 PCT%.

However, if India fails to secure a win in the fifth Test against Australia, they would be out of the race for the WTC final, even in case of a draw.

Furthermore, if India manages to overcome Australia in Sydney yet Australia still manages to win at least one Test in their series against Sri Lanka, India would still fall short of qualification.

Meanwhile, South Africa have made history on Sunday by clinching their first-ever place in the WTC final. This achievement came after a thrilling victory over Pakistan by two wickets in the first Test of their two-match series in Centurion.

Australia tailenders take lead to 333 after Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell

MELBOURNE: India seamer Jasprit Bumrah unleashed more destructive bowling but Australia stubbornly battled back to reach 228-9 on Sunday, leading by 333 runs in an absorbing fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Bumrah scythed through the middle order on day four in Melbourne to record figures of 4-56 off 24 overs and hand India an outside chance of victory in a match the home side have mostly dominated.

However, India’s hopes were diminished by a stubborn, unbeaten final-wicket stand of 55 from 17.5 overs.

Nathan Lyon was at the crease on 41 while number 11 Scott Boland had seen off 65 balls to be 10 not out at the close.

Up by 105 runs on the first innings, Australia were rocked by losing four wickets for 11 midway through the second session to slump to 91-6.

Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins responded with a vital partnership of 57, taking the steam out of Bumrah’s assault.

A charmed Labuschagne scored 70, to back up his first-innings 72, while Cummins produced a captain’s knock of 41 — giving him a career-high combined 90 runs for the Test.

Australia and India are both seeking to go 2-1 up in the series and heading into the fifth and final Test in Sydney. But, Australia remain in the stronger position on a pitch showing signs of variable bounce.

The conditions were exploited brilliantly by Jasprit Bumrah, who continued his dominance across a series in which he has claimed 29 wickets.

The 31-year-old powered past 200 Test victims and he boasts the lowest average at 19.45 of all 85 bowlers to have reached that milestone.

Labuschagne was beaten on numerous occasions by Bumrah’s jagging deliveries but kept his nerve in a 139-ball knock.

The Australian number three was fortunate, on 46, to survive a straightforward dropped chance in the slips by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jaiswal also couldn’t grasp a sharp chance under the helmet offered by Cummins in the final over before tea.

Labuschagne was trapped lbw by lively seamer Mohammed Siraj before Mitchell Starc was run out for five.

Spinner Ravindra Jadeja had Cummins caught behind, heralding the 10th-wicket stand which could yet prove pivotal to the outcome.

Siraj, who took 3-66, sparked the earlier collapse, dismissing first innings centurion Steve Smith for 13.

Jasprit Bumrah was at his best when removing Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey cheaply in rapid-fire fashion.

All-rounder Marsh was caught behind without scoring, continuing a series in which he has made little meaningful contribution.

Australia lost both openers before going to lunch at 53-2 against a spirited India. Teenage opener Sam Konstas was unable to match the fearless deeds from his debut first innings of 60, this time bowled for eight by Bumrah.

Usman Khawaja was bowled for 21 by Siraj, having been dropped early on by the butter-fingered Jaiswal at leg gully.

India were earlier dismissed for 369 in reply to Australia’s first innings 474, after adding 11 to their overnight score, with maiden centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy the last man out, caught in the deep for 114.

Reddy, playing just his fourth Test, finished with the highest Test score in Melbourne for any player batting at number eight or lower.

“Didn’t see him out of form”: Jasprit Bumrah hails Virat Kohli

India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah heaped high praise on star batter Virat Kohli after the crushing victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth on Monday.

The Indian side arrived in Australia on the back of a humiliating 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand.

Moreover, their captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Shubman Gill were not available for the first Test. In their absence, India were bundled for a meagre 150 runs in the first innings.

However, Bumrah led the team’s remarkable comeback as they booked Australia to 104 to take a 46-run lead.

India declared their second innings after posting a massive 487-6, setting Australia a mountainous 534-run target. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli struck dominant centuries to set up the mammoth total.

Kohli walked out to bat on the third day carrying the weight of four single-digit scores in his last five innings and a 16-month century drought. He last scored a century during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 semi-final against New Zealand.

However, he displayed a masterclass in strokeplay, marking his return to form with an unbeaten knock of 100 runs off 143 balls, laced with eight boundaries and two sixes.

In response, Australia crumbled to 238 all out in the final session on day four against an inspired attack led by the irrepressible Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3-42 to claim eight wickets in the match.

Bumrah praised Jaiswal and Kohli highly while talking to the media after the victory. He termed Jaiswal’s knock against Australia as the best innings by the young batter.

“[Yashasvi] Jaiswal has had a great start to his Test career. This was his best Test innings probably. He has an attacking nature, but he left the ball well and played long,” Bumrah stated.

The star bowler praised Kohli and asserted he was not out of form, explaining that a batter’s form cannot be judged on challenging batting wickets.

“I didn’t see him [Virat Kohli] out of form at all. On challenging wickets, it’s hard to judge if a batsman is in form. He was looking good in the nets,” he concluded.

How can India qualify for WTC final after crushing Australia in Perth Test?

India, under the stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, defeated Australia by a massive 295-run margin in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth and claimed the top spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings on Monday.

Australia, while chasing a mountainous 534, crumbled to 238 all out in the final session on day four. A counter-punching Travis Head made a gritty 89 while Mitchell Marsh chipped in with 47.

But it was never going to be enough against an inspired attack led by the irrepressible Bumrah, who took 3-42 to claim eight wickets in the match. He was ably supported by Mohammed Siraj with 3-51.

It was an astonishing turnaround for India, who arrived in Australia on the back of a humiliating 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand. They needed four victories in the five-match series to earn their place in the WTC final.

With the victory in the Perth Test, India successfully ascended to the top of the WTC standings, boasting a PCT of 61.11 after winning nine out of their 15 matches in the ongoing cycle.

In contrast, Australia, who had previously held the leading position in the WTC standings, fell to second place following this match, now possessing a PCT of 57.69 after securing eight wins out of 13 matches.

However, the win in Perth did not guarantee India a spot in the WTC final. To ensure their place in the final, the Indian team would need to win three out of the remaining four matches during their Australian tour.

A 5-0 clean sweep or a 4-1 victory in the series would provide them with the coveted ticket to the final. In case they fail to achieve these results, their fate will depend on the outcomes of other teams in the championship.

India crush Australia in first Border-Gavaskar Test to silence critics

PERTH: India ran riot to win the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a crushing 295 runs here on Monday and leave Australia shellshocked and searching for answers.

Set a mountainous 534 for victory, the world’s top-ranked Test team crumbled to 238 all out in the final session on day four. A counter-punching Travis Head made a gritty 89 while Mitchell Marsh chipped in with 47.

But it was never going to be enough against an inspired attack led by the irrepressible Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3-42 to claim eight wickets in the match. He was ably supported by Mohammed Siraj with 3-51.

It was an astonishing turnaround for India, who arrived in Australia on the back of a humiliating 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand.

Given little hope of defending the Border-Gavaskar Trophy they have held since 2017, they now head to the second day-night Test in Adelaide next week with a big psychological advantage and boosted by the return of skipper Rohit Sharma.

The victory was only India’s second in Perth and first since their triumph at the WACA Ground back in 2008.

Under Bumrah’s temporary captaincy, they utterly dominated an ageing side which is now the one facing scrutiny after failing to fire.

Out for a dismal 104 in reply to India’s first-innings 150, the hosts’ bowling attack then had no reply to a brilliant 161 from impressive young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and an unbeaten 100 from superstar Virat Kohli, who went past legendary Sir Don Bradman’s tally of Test centuries.

Australia’s batting line-up, which has long relied on one large score or partnership to pull them out of sticky situations, was mostly outsmarted. Their longest partnership through both innings was 82.

With India setting them a huge target, they again capitulated on Monday in the face of the Bumrah-led onslaught.

After imploding in the final 30 minutes of play on Sunday, they resumed on 12-3 with Usman Khawaja on three and Steve Smith yet to score. Khawaja added just one when he mistimed a pull shot off Siraj and got a big top edge.

It was caught by backtracking wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who became the most expensive player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history on Sunday at the tournament’s lucrative auction.

Head survived a loud lbw shout on seven, a review found it was missing leg stump and he battled on, smacking seven boundaries for his 17th Test half-century.

At the other end, Smith was felled by a Harshit Rana bouncer that slammed into his midriff, needing a spell lying on the ground to recover. He was able to get up and play on, and like Head came through an lbw review on 12.

But their partnership was ended by Siraj, with Pant taking another neat catch after Smith edged a delivery he had to play on 17.

Head teamed up with Marsh in an 82-run stand to temporarily raise hopes before Bumrah again worked his magic.

Seemingly destined for a century, the largely untroubled Head feathered to Pant with Bumrah’s loud double fist pump showing how ecstatic he was at the breakthrough.

Allrounder Marsh kept the scoreboard ticking over with Alex Carey but fell for 47, dragging a wide Nitish Kumar Reddy delivery onto the stumps.

Mitchell Starc, top-scorer in the first innings, was out for 12 on the cusp of tea before the tail was wrapped up early in the final session.

Australia and India will now travel to Adelaide for the second Test, starting from December 6. Meanwhile, the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to be played in Brisbane from December 14-18.

The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host the fourth match from December 26, while the final Test will be played in Sydney from January 3.
