Khushdil, Mustafizur shine in last-over thriller for Rangpur Riders

SYLHET: All-round Khushdil Shah and an impressive final over from pacer Mustafizur Rahman helped Rangpur Riders seal a thrilling five-run victory over Dhaka Capitals in the 12th fixture of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025-26.

Set 156, Capitals fell short by five runs at the end of their 20 overs, with 10 required on the last six balls.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Abdullah Al Mamun provided a solid start with 54 on the board in the first six overs.

However, Kyle Mayers and Khushdil Shah removed both batters in consecutive overs to put Dhaka Capitals back into the game.

Gurbaz made 31 from 22 with the aid of five fours and six, while Mamun hit four boundaries in his 20 off 18.

Despite the wickets, Mohammad Mithun and Saif Hassan were able to lift their side out of trouble as they added 51 for the third wicket partnership. The pair composed a batting partnership that brought the score to 111 in 15.1 overs.

Saif made 15 from 24 balls, an innings without a single boundary.

But it was an impressive final over from Mustafizur that turned the match on its head.

For Rangpur Riders, Khushdil Shah, Kyle Mayers, Mustafizur Rahman, and Al Islam picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, put into bat first, Rangpur Riders were limited to 155-5 in their 20 overs.

Mahmudullah, meanwhile, continued on and scored a half-century before getting caught in the 17th over. The right-handed batter made 51 off 41 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Khushdil, on the other hand, provided Riders’ innings with a s late flourish, scoring a brisk 38* off 21, which included two sixes and four boundaries.

Khushdil Shah credits self-improvement after quick-fire knock against Peshawar Zalmi

Khushdil Shah stated that his match-winning innings against Peshawar Zalmi resulted from two years of dedicated self-improvement and hard work.

Karachi Kings stormed into the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 with a dominant 23-run victory over Peshawar Zalmi.

The highlight of the match was a blistering unbeaten 43 off just 15 balls from Khushdil Shah, who, alongside Mohammad Nabi (26* off 10), stitched together a game-changing 70-run stand in just 24 balls to take Kings to an imposing 237-4.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Khushdil reflected on the break in the tournament and how the team stayed focused during that period.

“Yes, there was a break, but we ensured our practice and training continued. During the gap, we kept ourselves prepared for the resumption,” he said.

“It really helped that all our overseas players returned. The kind of start our top order gave us—when a team gets that platform, it makes it much easier to capitalise in the death overs.”

Khushdil Shah, often under scrutiny for his supposed weakness against short-pitched and outside off-stump deliveries, was asked about his evident improvement and fluency in this PSL season.

He revealed how he worked on his perceived weaknesses and trained to adapt to various match situations.

“When I was dropped from the national team, I knew I had to fix what was holding me back,” Khushdil said.

“Previously, I used to bat only in the last two or three overs, where the situation demands immediate hitting. That affected my rhythm and mindset.”

“So after being dropped, I decided to seriously work on my weaknesses and trained myself to play longer innings, because often top-order collapses mean you have to bat earlier.

“I realised that I needed to prepare myself for all kinds of situations and improve every aspect of my batting.”

He added that he consciously focused on shot-making across the ground and adapting to different situations.

“It’s not that I’m weak against short balls. In fact, in the death overs, bowlers rarely go short—that’s often the easiest delivery to put away,” he further stated.

“Sometimes you mistime it, sometimes you score, sometimes you don’t. I’ve spent the last two years working hard on my batting, and all my focus has been on improving myself.”

When asked about attacking young Pakistani pacers Ali Raza and Ahmed Daniyal, who bowled the crucial final two overs, Khushdil Shah downplayed any notion of ease.

“We got a great start from David Warner and James Vince, which gave us the cushion,” he said.

“Secondly, the wicket was slow, and our intent was simple: watch the ball and hit the ball. Thankfully, the shots were connecting and going all around the ground.”

With this win, Karachi Kings sealed their place in the playoffs and sent a strong message to the remaining contenders.

The team will now look to carry their momentum forward and continue their charge for their second PSL title.

Khushdil Shah fined for ICC Code of Conduct breach

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalized Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah for breaching the code of conduct during their first T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval on Sunday.

Khushdil has been penalised 50% of his match fee for a Level 2 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

According to the ICC, the south-paw violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for player and player support Personnel.

This article relates “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”

The incident took place during the 8th over of Pakistan’s innings when Khushdil collided forcefully with bowler Zakary Foulkes from behind.

This action was categorized as ‘inappropriate physical contact with significant force’ and was considered ‘reckless, negligent, and preventable.’

Khushdil Shah accepted the sanctions levelled by the umpires and Match Referee Jeff Crowe, as a result of which there was no need for a formal hearing,” the ICC stated in a statement.

Khushdil has received three demerit points added to his disciplinary record for his first offence within a 24-month period.

It is important to note that if a player accumulates four or more demerit points within this timeframe, those points are converted into suspension points.

Two suspension points lead to a ban from either one Test match, two One Day Internationals (ODIs), or two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), depending on which type of match occurs first for the player.

It is worth noting here that Khushdil Shah remained the top-scorer for Pakistan in the first T20I, in which they were bowled out for just 91 in 18.4 overs.

The Pakistan cricket team’s openers scored ducks, while seven of their batters failed to reach double-digit in the game.

In response, New Zealand chased down the 92-run target with nine wickets and 59 balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

Khushdil Shah defends Pakistan’s batting approach after New Zealand loss

Pakistan middle-order batter Khushdil Shah expressed confidence in the national team’s batting approach after their loss against New Zealand in the first T20I at the Hagley Oval on Sunday.

Khushdil, who returned to the T20I team after over two years, was the top scorer for Pakistan, making 32 runs off 30 balls, including three massive sixes.

After being asked to bat first, the Pakistan team struggled against a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack and were bundled out for 91, with Kyle Jamieson leading the charge by picking up crucial wickets.

The Men in Green encountered early trouble, losing three wickets for just one run. Kyle Jamieson caused havoc with the ball, claiming three wickets early on.

Pakistan’s batting lineup collapsed, getting dismissed for just 91 runs in 18.4 overs.

New Zealand chased down the target in the 11th over, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.

Khushdil Shah backed the team’s approach stating that we have discussed playing with intent and a positive approach.

“It was being discussed that we need to play with intent and play positively to fulfil the demand of modern-day cricket,” said Khushdil.

The left-handed player further emphasized the impact of conditions and new team members, highlighting their intentions.

“But, when we came here, the conditions changed for our players. Secondly, the players are new and the team is building. They showed the intent but unfortunately coped with the failures.”

“So, by the will of Almighty Allah, if they are given the chance and they keep playing with the same intent, our team and its combination would become better,” he concluded.

Khushdil Shah breaks silence on ‘parchi’ chants after New Zealand loss

Pakistan all-rounder Khushdil Shah has finally spoken out about the relentless chants of “parchi parchi” (a term used to suggest favouritism in team selection) that have followed him throughout his career.

The left-hander addressed the criticism head-on after Pakistan’s 60-run loss to New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy opener in Karachi yesterday.

Despite playing a fighting knock of 69 off 49 balls in a failed chase of 321, Khushdil once again found himself on the receiving end of fan taunts.

But instead of lashing out, he chose to respond with composure, making it clear that his focus has never been on personal milestones.

“If I were playing for myself, you wouldn’t have heard those [parchi] chants today,” Khushdil Shah said while speaking to journalists in the mixed zone.

“I have never played for individual records. My goal is always to contribute to the team’s success, whether people acknowledge it or not. I try to score runs without worrying about my wicket.”

The left-hander, who showed some resistance alongside Naseem Shah in Pakistan’s collapsing chase, revealed that they were determined to take the game deep.

“Naseem and I were discussing that if we could take the game to the last over, we had a chance. But with no wickets left in hand, it wasn’t possible,” he said.

Khushdil Shah, who has been a consistent target of criticism from a section of the fanbase, admitted that he’s grown used to the negativity.

“People have been chanting slogans at me for two years now. It’s become a habit. I even tell them, ‘Go on, chant some more,'” he said.

“This is a big tournament happening on our home soil. It’s important for people to support the team instead of tearing down players. It’s disappointing when your own fans do this at your home ground.

“It shouldn’t happen, but I’ve learned to handle it and just focus on my game.”
