Pedri strikes winner over Celta as Barcelona return to top before El Clasico

BARCELONA: Barcelona extended their win streak to seven and returned to the top of the LaLiga table after they edged past Celta Vigo 1-0 on Sunday at Camp Nou.

Barca held off Real Madrid from the top spot on the basis of goal difference as the competition intensified before they face each in the first El Clasico scheduled on October 16 (Sunday).

The two Spanish rivals remain undefeated throughout the season so far as both sides have won seven and drawn one of their opening eight league games.

19-year-old Pedri scored the decider between Barca and Celta Vigo as he netted the ball in the 17th minute after a brilliant cross from Gavi.

The match witnessed a disorganised performance from Xavi’s side as Celta almost had an equalizer when Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header found the back of the nets but the goal was disallowed.

Iago Aspas’ effort to double the lead in the final minutes was also saved brilliantly by Celta’s goalkeeper Ter Stegen.

Meanwhile, in another game on Sunday, Real Sociedad beat Villareal 1-0 at Anoeta Stadium, San Sebastian, with Brais Mendez scoring the winner in the 33rd minute.

At Nuevo Mirandilla, home side Cadiz denied Espanyol their second win of the season, despite a brilliant brace from Joselu, as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, Valladolid and Real Betis finished in a goalless tie at Jose Zorrilla stadium in another LaLiga fixture on Sunday.

Eder strikes early to aid Real Madrid regain top spot in LaLiga

GETAFE: Reigning Champions Real Madrid regained the top spot in the LaLiga table after they edged past the home team Getafe 1-0 at  Coliseum Alfonso Perez.on Saturday. 

Eder Militao scored the lone goal of the match as he headed the ball into the nets of Luka Modric’s corner in the third minute.

Real had almost doubled the lead after halftime but Rodrygo’s strike was ruled out for offside.

The finest opportunity for Getafe to tie the score came midway through the first half when Borja Mayoral was unable to net Fabrizio Angileri’s shot across the goal.

With the narrow win, Los Blancos went three points ahead of second-placed Barcelona who will face Celta Vigo on Sunday in a bid to top the standing at the end of matchday eight of LaLiga 2022-23.

Meanwhile, in another game on Saturday, Angel Correa’s brace powered Atletico Madrid to go 2-1 up over Girona in a home game.

Correa scored the first goal in the fifth minute after a brilliant assist from Griezmann. He then doubled his team’s lead three minutes into the second half.

Rodrigo Riquelme, however, reduced the deficit with a long-range shot which landed in the nets through deflection.

Following this win, Atletico moved to the fourth position on the table while Girona took the 13th spot.

Almeria, on the other hand, thumped Rayo Vallecano 3-1 at home, thanks to the goals by Lucas Robertone, Srdan Babic and El Bilal Toure.

Meanwhile, Sevilla and Athletic Club ended in a 1-1 draw as Mikel Vesga equalized Oliver Torres’ early goal.

Kluivert nets first goal as Valencia sink Osasuna in La Liga

PAMPLONA: Justin Kluivert scored his maiden goal for Valencia and aided in his side’s dominating 2-1 victory over Osasuna in the first match of Matchday eight in the ongoing La Liga 2022-23.

Kluivert, a forward, who was making his fourth appearance since joining Valencia from Roma on loan, made a nice run behind the defence, took a through ball from Edinson Cavani, and dodged the goalie to score in the 28th minute.

Defender Mouctar Diakhaby then further enhanced the visitors’ lead over Osasuna to 2-1, after the home side failed to clear a ball from a corner kick in the 54th.

Both sides then missed a penalty each with Osasuna forward, Chimy Avila, sending his chance well high after Valencia’s Hugo Duro fouled Kike García in the 59th, while Edinson Cavani, who has yet to score since joining Valencia, hit the crossbar with the resulting penalty.

Osasuna also got on the scoreboard as Darko Brasanac netted the ball in the stoppage time but the side, fielding with nine players, following Ruben Pena receiving a direct red for kicking a prone Duro, could not score the equalizer and Valencia, as a result, ran away with the victory.

Kike strikes to end Real Madrid’s winning run in LaLiga 2022-23

MADRID: Kike Garcia struck in the second half while Karim Benzema missed the penalty as Osasuna ended Real Madrid’s perfect run in the ongoing LaLiga season here at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. 

After six consecutive victories since the start of the season, defending champions Real finally had their first draw when they were held by 10-man Osasuna 1-1.

For the first time in LaLiga 2022-23, Real would be ending the matchday without being at the top of the table as Barcelona ascended to the top spot after beating Mallorca 1-0 yesterday.

Vinicius Junior scored the opening goal three minutes before halftime with a bizarre cross-come-shot but Kike equalized after the break with a cheeky flicked header.

Osasuna were down to 10 players when David Garcia was sent off for pushing Benzema which led to the penalty.

Benzema, however, missed the opportunity and smashed the penalty off the crossbar.

Meanwhile in another game on Sunday Real Sociedad thumped Girona 5-3 after a thrilling competition at Montilivi.

Alexander Sorioth scored a brace while Brais Mendez, Martin Zubimendi and Takefusa Kubo each netted a ball once to upset the home crowd.

At Balaidos, Gabri Viega’s early goal helped the home team Celta Vigo to edge past 10-man Real Betis.

Eray Comert scored in the closing time aiding Valencia to finish on a 2-2 draw against the home side Espanyol when they were cruising to victory.

Serigi Darder netted the ball in the 83rd minute after a magnificent hit to put the hosts in the lead but Comert levelled things up.

Lewandowki strikes as Barcelona sink Mallorco 1-0 in LaLiga

PALMA: Robert Lewandowski scored his ninth goal of the season to help Barcelona to go on top of the LaLiga table as the side beat Mallorca 1-0 here on Saturday.

Lewandowski hit the lone goal of the game in the 20th minute with a low curling finish into the bottom corner.

Jaume Costa nearly hit an equalizer for the home team but a superb save from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen averted Mallorca from getting back into the game.

With six consecutive wins and a draw, Barca secured the top spot in the standings on the second day of match day seven. Real Madrid, however, will lock horns with Osasuna on Monday to regain its top position.

Real Madrid down Atletico in derby to maintain perfect LaLiga start

MADRID: Real Madrid cruised past Atletico Madrid 2-1 in an exciting city’s derby on Sunday to maintain the 100 per cent success rate in the ongoing season and reclaimed their two points lead over Barcelona. 

Real Madrid won straight six opening games for the first time after 1987-88 to bolster their chances of LaLiga title defence.

A dominant display in the first half thanks to the strikes by Rodrygo and Federico Valverde put Real in a commanding position over the home team.

Mario Hermoso retaliated with a late consoling goal for the hosts but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real in the 18th minute after a bright start from his side. They double their lead in the 36th minute as Valverde touched the ball into the nets after Vinicius Jr’s shot hit the post.

With the win, Real Madrid regained the top spot in the standings with 18 points while Barcelona slipped to the second after a brief stay at top following a 3-0 win against Elche on Saturday.

Real Betis edged past Girona 2-1 and secured the third spot in the standings thanks to the brace by Borja Iglesias.

Real Sociedad beat Espanyol 2-1 after a thrilling first-half battle between both sides at Anoeta Stadium on Sunday.

Getafe earned a surprise win over Osasuna as they thumped the home team 2-0 to claim their second win of the season.

Lewandowski’s brace powers Barcelona to sink Elche 3-0 in LaLiga

BARCELONA: Robert Lewandowski netted the ball twice, scoring 11 goals in nine games, to put Barcelona on the top of the standings in LaLiga 2022-23.

After a Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich, Polish star and Memphis Depay relieved the Catalan giants as they beat ten-men Elche 3-0 on Saturday in a home game.

The early sent-off of Gonzala Verdu in the 14th minute when he attempted to haul down  Lewandowski put Elche at a disadvantage and opened the floodgates.

Lewandowski hit the opening goal from close range in the 34th minute after an impressive cross from Alejandro Balde, who then assisted Depay four minutes before halftime for the second.

Lewandowski had his second early in the second half to steer Barca into a dominant position in a one-sided game.

Valencia, on the other hand, crushed Celta Vigo 3-0 in a home game thanks to the strikes by Samu Castillejo, Marcos Andre and Andre Almeida.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club edged past Rayo Vallecano after a dominant first-half play and jump to the third on the table.

Negredo’s late strike lifts Cadiz to first win in La Liga 2022-23

VALLADOLID: Alvaro Negredo landed a late goal in the extra time to power Cadiz past Valladolid 1-0 to claim their maiden victory of the ongoing La Liga 2022-23.

In a clash between the two bottom-placed sides, Cadiz stunned the home crowd in the extra time after sealing a much-needed victory of the ongoing season.

The two teams remained indulged in a tense battle in both halves and could not be separated as the scoreboard remained intact at 0-0 at the 90-minute mark.

Former Manchester City striker Negredo then made the most of the assist from Joseba Zaldua and used his left foot to net the first goal for his side in the ongoing league.

A much-needed goal from Negredo lifted Cadiz to claim their first victory of the tournament after losing their first five matches by a combined score of 0-14.

The victory over Valladolid lifted Cadiz from the last place and moved right behind the 18th-ranked Valladolid in the relegation zone.

Avila strikes as Osasuna sink Almeria to maintain exceptional La Liga run

ALMERIA: Osasuna maintained their outstanding La Liga 2022-23 campaign with a 1-0 victory over the home side, Almeria, as matchday five of the Spanish league came to an end.

In a clash between the seventh-ranked Osasuna and 14th-ranked Almeria, the visiting side made the difference evident by securing a resounding 1-0 victory.

Chimy Avila gave Osasuna an early 1-0 lead in the 28th minute with a one-timer from close to the penalty spot. The lead held up until the final whistle.

Following the victory, Osasuna occupied the fifth spot in the La Liga standings with the same number of victories as Barcelona and Real Betis. Only defending champion Real Madrid has five wins out of five matches.

Almeria, on the other hand, which suffered a second straight and a third overall setback remained in the 14th position with only one victory in five matches.

Real Madrid thump Mallorca 4-1, maintain perfect run in LaLiga

MADRID: Defending Champions Real Madrid continued their winning streak to the season as they came from behind to outclass Mallorca 4-1 here at Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Mallorca stunned the home crowd as they gained the surprise lead in the 34th minute when Vedat Muriqi scored a header. However, Federico Valverde levelled before the first half for Real after a phenomenal solo run and a brilliant strike in the stoppage time.

Vinicius Junior put the hosts ahead in the 72nd minute before Rodrygo Goes and Antonio Rudiger scored late goals to furhter the lead and steered the side to a fifth successive win in the Spanish League.

With the win, Real Madrid held off Barcelona to secure the top position in the standings.

Meanwhile, Athletic Club outpowered the home side Elche 4-1 on Sunday to secure their to jump to the fifth spot with the third win.

Getafe secured their first win of the season as they edged past Real Sociedad 2-1 in a home game.
