Celta Vigo managed to deny further attempts by Real Madrid to extend their lead before they shot in their own feet in the 79th minute.

Celta Vigo goalkeeper, Vincente Guaita, almost saved Rudiger’s header after a corner, but it rattled the crossbar and bounced back down for an own goal.

Valencia’s Mouctar Diakhaby undergoes surgery on serious knee injury

Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby has undergone surgery on the severe knee injury he suffered playing against Real Madrid in La Liga last weekend, his club said on Friday.

“It was an arduous operation, but a success,” Valencia doctor Pedro Lopez said in a video published by the club.

“It involved the reconstruction of multiple ligaments but we are happy with how it went,” he added, revealing that “many ligament structures were damaged”.

The 27-year-old French-born Guinea international centre-back dislocated his right knee in the 86th minute of the 2-2 draw last Sunday.

He collapsed to the ground in agony in his own penalty box, the leg buckling as Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni fell into him.

It was immediately clear the injury was extremely serious, and Diakhaby spent the next 48 hours under observation in hospital in Valencia.

He then travelled to the French city of Lyon to undergo an operation performed by renowned knee surgeon Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet.

Lopez, the Valencia doctor, said Diakhaby would stay for the next two weeks in Lyon where he will undergo tests and then start his rehabilitation.

“He might undergo an arthroscopy in six weeks”, said Lopez, adding that the player will “gradually begin the recovery process”.

However, he did not give a timeframe for Diakhaby to return to action.

“The situation now is about looking forward and remaining optimistic. In all this long process that awaits us it is really important that the player keeps his spirits up.”

Spanish media reports have suggested Diakhaby faces at least 10 months on the sidelines.

Mouctar Diakhaby made his professional breakthrough at Lyon and played 55 top-team games for them before moving to Valencia in 2018 for a reported 15 million euros. He featured in the Valencia team that won the Copa del Rey in 2019.

Having been capped by France at Under-21 level, he later chose to play for Guinea and recently helped them reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Ante Budimir guides Osasuna to La Liga win over Alaves

PAMPLONA: Ante Budimir scored a late goal to guide Osasuna to a 1-0 victory over Alaves in their La Liga 2023-24 clash at El Sadar Stadium on Monday.

The first half of the game remained goalless as both teams made several efforts to earn the lead but could not get a breakthrough.

Budimir came close to opening the scoring in the 36th minute when he found a cross by Ruben Garcia following a corner and hit a header but it narrowly missed the goal.

Meanwhile, Alaves goalkeeper made an impressive save to deny Budimir another goal at the stroke of the first half.

But the Croatian striker did not slow down and broke the deadlock to score the only goal in the match, leading Osasuna to their 10th victory in the ongoing La Liga season.

Budimir once again met Garcia’s cross and hit a left-footed shot from outside the box which hit the top left corner a mere 14 minutes before the final time.

The Croatian stood out in the match courtesy of his brilliance in the field and the black protective face mask he wore.

After the match, he reflected on his performance as well as the mask, which he wore after suffering a nose injury during the Las Palmas match last week.

“The mask has been good. It was the only way to play, and playing is the only thing that matters,” said Budimir.

“As for the goal, it was a clean strike. And then you just enjoy seeing it hit the net.”

Meanwhile, in another La Liga clash, defending champions Barcelona and Atheltic Club settled for a goalless draw.

Vinicius Jr’s double helps Real Madrid draw against Valencia

VALENCIA: Vinicius Junior scored a brace to help Real Madrid make a comeback and register a 2-2 draw against Valencia in the ongoing La Liga 2023-24 at Mestalla Stadium on Saturday.

La Liga leaders Real Madrid entered the Mestella Stadium with a 20-match undefeated streak in the league, which is their best-undefeated run since a 23-match streak in 2011-12.

However, they were caught off-guard by the Valencia attack in the first half as Roman Yaremchuk created a chance in the 11th minute.

They did not take long and earned the advantage with a header from the centre of the box by Hugo Duro in the 27th minute.

Yaremchuk doubled the lead three minutes later as he took advantage of a miscommunication between Dani Carvajal and Andriy Lunin. He netted the empty net to make it 2-0, much to the frustration of the table-toppers.

The home team was poised to go into half-time with a 2-0 lead, however, Vinicius Jr. rained on their parade, scoring a brilliant goal at the stroke of half-time.

Girona La Liga title bid further dented in Athletic Bilbao defeat

Surprise La Liga title contenders Girona suffered another dent in a 3-2 defeat by Athletic Bilbao on Monday, with Alex Berenguer striking twice for the Basque side.

After leaders Real Madrid were held to a draw by Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, the Catalan minnows, second, hoped to cut the six-point gap but lost in a gripping clash at San Mames.

Michel Sanchez’s side are now only two points ahead of champions Barcelona and seven in front of fifth-place Athletic, chasing a top-four spot.

Girona have failed to win any of their last three league matches.

After Berenguer sent Athletic ahead, Viktor Tsygankov levelled for Girona.

However, Berenguer and Inaki Williams quickly netted for the hosts and although Eric Garcia pulled one back, Girona could not find the equaliser.

“We lacked a bit of determination in the final third … I think the second half was good,” said Girona coach Michel, who watched from a box as he was banned from the touchline.

“We have to continue, we can’t ask the team to always win and we have to keep fighting to stay up there.”

Athletic took the lead inside two minutes after Girona playmaker Aleix Garcia played a dangerous ball across the face of his own area.

Berenguer intercepted and drilled home inside the near post, catching out Paulo Gazzaniga.

Girona lacked their usual zip, still chastened from last weekend’s heavy 4-0 thrashing by Real Madrid.

The Catalans pulled level at the start of the second half when Tsygankov turned home Ivan Martin’s cross.

Girona did not keep parity for long with Berenguer netting his second following another Girona mistake.

Miguel Gutierrez dallied on the ball and was robbed by Gorka Guruzeta, who crossed for Berenguer to finish.

Girona’s defence was all at sea as Inaki Williams netted Athletic’s third.

Eric Garcia headed home from Aleix Garcia’s cross to give Girona the chance to rescue a point.

They almost did deep in stoppage time but Athletic defender Dani Vivian brilliantly headed John Solis’ shot off the line to safety.

“The reality has always been that our objective was to reach the Champions League, we’re still there,” Eric Garcia told DAZN.

“We have to continue, we can’t fool ourselves — we’ve come from a tricky run of games.”

Rayo Vallecano hold subdued La Liga leaders Real Madrid

La Liga leaders Real Madrid stumbled to a frustrating 1-1 draw at neighbours Rayo Vallecano on Sunday but stretched their lead at the top to six points.

Joselu fired the visitors in front early on but former Madrid youth player Raul de Tomas levelled for Rayo from the penalty spot in coach Inigo Perez’s first match at the helm.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side extended their lead over surprise challengers Girona before the Catalan minnows face Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

After Real Madrid thrashed Girona last weekend to take a five-point lead in the title race, the draw against Rayo Vallecano allows their closest pursuers a chance to cut the gap.

Dani Carvajal was sent off at the death for Madrid after appearing to elbow Kike Perez.

“We have to win all our games, but to win a league, the games you can’t win, you can’t lose them (either),” Madrid coach Ancelotti told reporters.

“Sometimes draws can hurt a bit but it could be a positive step to take us closer to winning the league.”

Real Madrid have suffered just one defeat in the top flight and are unbeaten in 19 La Liga matches.

Rayo, 14th, sacked Francisco Rodriguez earlier this week and appointed Perez, with Madrid’s visit a baptism of fire.

It took only three minutes for Madrid to take the lead, with Fede Valverde racing down the right on a sharp counter-attack.

The Uruguayan crossed for Joselu to bundle home and despite initially being called offside, VAR showed the goal should stand.

Joselu headed home a second but this time it was correctly disallowed after Lucas Vazquez had taken the ball out of play before crossing for his Spanish compatriot.

Despite taking an early lead, Madrid failed to create many clear openings.

Los Blancos were without top goalscorer Jude Bellingham, currently recovering from an ankle injury.

They earned a 1-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek and perhaps tiredness told against an energised, hard-working Rayo.

The hosts pulled level through De Tomas’ penalty after 27 minutes, slammed down the middle after Eduardo Camavinga handled Oscar Trejo’s shot.

Valverde, heavily involved, cracked a shot against the post from 20 yards as Madrid looked to restore their lead.

At the other end Andriy Lunin was alert to save at the near post from Alvaro Garcia after Rayo picked Luka Modric’s pocket.

Substitute Toni Kroos forced a good save from Rayo goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski with a free-kick as the clock ticked down.

The Macedonian stopper also fielded a long range Carvajal drive in stoppage time.

The defender was then dismissed for swinging an elbow at Kike Perez in frustration after his shirt was pulled to earn a second yellow card and end a disappointing afternoon for Madrid.

“We started very well, good with the ball, we scored, they ruled out another one marginally, Federico hit the post … until the penalty we did everything well,” added Ancelotti.

Rayo have not won in seven matches across all competitions but will be proud of the draw.

De Tomas, brought into the team by Perez as a starter, was happy to score his first goal of the season, with Rayo midfielder Isi Palazon giving him the ball to take the spot kick.

“With the run we’ve been on this draw will do us a lot of good,” De Tomas told Movistar.

“(Scoring) took a weight off me, I’m grateful Isi let me have the penalty knowing that I’ve gone a long time without scoring a goal.”

Later Sunday, Granada face Almeria in a battle between the bottom two, while Real Sociedad visit Mallorca and Real Betis host Alaves.

Atletico Madrid beat Sevilla 1-0 to displace Barcelona at third position

MADRID: Marcos Llorente’s goal helped Atletico Madrid edge Sevilla 1-0 to displace defending champions Barcelona in third position during their La Liga 2023-24 clash at Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid’s last La Liga match ended in a 3-3 stalemate against Getafe after being reduced to ten men, while Sevilla registered their third victory this season over Granada 3-0.

Both teams started the game on high, making two attempts each in the first ten minutes to end this year with a victory.

Antoine Griezmann was at his best, making several attempts to earn the lead for Atletico however, Sevilla’s goalkeeper did not let him get through.

Both sides fought hard in the first half, which ended without a goal from either team.

The home side made two substitutions for the second half as Marcos Llorente replaced Nahuel Molina, while Ángel Correa replaced Rodrigo Riquelme.

Marcos Llorente came off the bench and scored the match-winner in his first minute as he hit a right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right to the bottom left corner.

This was Llorente’s third goal during the ongoing season of La Liga.

Llorente came close to adding a second with a header that hit the top of the net and a shot saved by Sevilla keeper Marko Dmitrovic.

Sevilla made several vain efforts to equalise but could not get through as the home side’s lead remained intact until the final whistle.

Atletico Madrid will face second-placed Girona in their next La Liga match on January 4th, while Sevilla will face Athletic Club on the same day.
