Vinicius Jr’s double helps Real Madrid draw against Valencia

VALENCIA: Vinicius Junior scored a brace to help Real Madrid make a comeback and register a 2-2 draw against Valencia in the ongoing La Liga 2023-24 at Mestalla Stadium on Saturday.

La Liga leaders Real Madrid entered the Mestella Stadium with a 20-match undefeated streak in the league, which is their best-undefeated run since a 23-match streak in 2011-12.

However, they were caught off-guard by the Valencia attack in the first half as Roman Yaremchuk created a chance in the 11th minute.

They did not take long and earned the advantage with a header from the centre of the box by Hugo Duro in the 27th minute.

Yaremchuk doubled the lead three minutes later as he took advantage of a miscommunication between Dani Carvajal and Andriy Lunin. He netted the empty net to make it 2-0, much to the frustration of the table-toppers.

The home team was poised to go into half-time with a 2-0 lead, however, Vinicius Jr. rained on their parade, scoring a brilliant goal at the stroke of half-time.

Vinicius found a cross from Brahim Diaz and scored a brilliant header from a close range to level the score in the 76th minute.

In other La Liga clashes, Getafe and Las Palmas settled for a 3-3 stalemate at Estadio Coliseum, while Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 with Cadiz at Estadio Coliseum.

Girona La Liga title bid further dented in Athletic Bilbao defeat

Surprise La Liga title contenders Girona suffered another dent in a 3-2 defeat by Athletic Bilbao on Monday, with Alex Berenguer striking twice for the Basque side.

After leaders Real Madrid were held to a draw by Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, the Catalan minnows, second, hoped to cut the six-point gap but lost in a gripping clash at San Mames.

Michel Sanchez’s side are now only two points ahead of champions Barcelona and seven in front of fifth-place Athletic, chasing a top-four spot.

Girona have failed to win any of their last three league matches.

After Berenguer sent Athletic ahead, Viktor Tsygankov levelled for Girona.

However, Berenguer and Inaki Williams quickly netted for the hosts and although Eric Garcia pulled one back, Girona could not find the equaliser.

“We lacked a bit of determination in the final third … I think the second half was good,” said Girona coach Michel, who watched from a box as he was banned from the touchline.

“We have to continue, we can’t ask the team to always win and we have to keep fighting to stay up there.”

Athletic took the lead inside two minutes after Girona playmaker Aleix Garcia played a dangerous ball across the face of his own area.

Berenguer intercepted and drilled home inside the near post, catching out Paulo Gazzaniga.

Girona lacked their usual zip, still chastened from last weekend’s heavy 4-0 thrashing by Real Madrid.

The Catalans pulled level at the start of the second half when Tsygankov turned home Ivan Martin’s cross.

Girona did not keep parity for long with Berenguer netting his second following another Girona mistake.

Miguel Gutierrez dallied on the ball and was robbed by Gorka Guruzeta, who crossed for Berenguer to finish.

Girona’s defence was all at sea as Inaki Williams netted Athletic’s third.

Eric Garcia headed home from Aleix Garcia’s cross to give Girona the chance to rescue a point.

They almost did deep in stoppage time but Athletic defender Dani Vivian brilliantly headed John Solis’ shot off the line to safety.

“The reality has always been that our objective was to reach the Champions League, we’re still there,” Eric Garcia told DAZN.

“We have to continue, we can’t fool ourselves — we’ve come from a tricky run of games.”

Rayo Vallecano hold subdued La Liga leaders Real Madrid

La Liga leaders Real Madrid stumbled to a frustrating 1-1 draw at neighbours Rayo Vallecano on Sunday but stretched their lead at the top to six points.

Joselu fired the visitors in front early on but former Madrid youth player Raul de Tomas levelled for Rayo from the penalty spot in coach Inigo Perez’s first match at the helm.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side extended their lead over surprise challengers Girona before the Catalan minnows face Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

After Real Madrid thrashed Girona last weekend to take a five-point lead in the title race, the draw against Rayo Vallecano allows their closest pursuers a chance to cut the gap.

Dani Carvajal was sent off at the death for Madrid after appearing to elbow Kike Perez.

“We have to win all our games, but to win a league, the games you can’t win, you can’t lose them (either),” Madrid coach Ancelotti told reporters.

“Sometimes draws can hurt a bit but it could be a positive step to take us closer to winning the league.”

Real Madrid have suffered just one defeat in the top flight and are unbeaten in 19 La Liga matches.

Rayo, 14th, sacked Francisco Rodriguez earlier this week and appointed Perez, with Madrid’s visit a baptism of fire.

It took only three minutes for Madrid to take the lead, with Fede Valverde racing down the right on a sharp counter-attack.

The Uruguayan crossed for Joselu to bundle home and despite initially being called offside, VAR showed the goal should stand.

Joselu headed home a second but this time it was correctly disallowed after Lucas Vazquez had taken the ball out of play before crossing for his Spanish compatriot.

Despite taking an early lead, Madrid failed to create many clear openings.

Los Blancos were without top goalscorer Jude Bellingham, currently recovering from an ankle injury.

They earned a 1-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek and perhaps tiredness told against an energised, hard-working Rayo.

The hosts pulled level through De Tomas’ penalty after 27 minutes, slammed down the middle after Eduardo Camavinga handled Oscar Trejo’s shot.

Valverde, heavily involved, cracked a shot against the post from 20 yards as Madrid looked to restore their lead.

At the other end Andriy Lunin was alert to save at the near post from Alvaro Garcia after Rayo picked Luka Modric’s pocket.

Substitute Toni Kroos forced a good save from Rayo goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski with a free-kick as the clock ticked down.

The Macedonian stopper also fielded a long range Carvajal drive in stoppage time.

The defender was then dismissed for swinging an elbow at Kike Perez in frustration after his shirt was pulled to earn a second yellow card and end a disappointing afternoon for Madrid.

“We started very well, good with the ball, we scored, they ruled out another one marginally, Federico hit the post … until the penalty we did everything well,” added Ancelotti.

Rayo have not won in seven matches across all competitions but will be proud of the draw.

De Tomas, brought into the team by Perez as a starter, was happy to score his first goal of the season, with Rayo midfielder Isi Palazon giving him the ball to take the spot kick.

“With the run we’ve been on this draw will do us a lot of good,” De Tomas told Movistar.

“(Scoring) took a weight off me, I’m grateful Isi let me have the penalty knowing that I’ve gone a long time without scoring a goal.”

Later Sunday, Granada face Almeria in a battle between the bottom two, while Real Sociedad visit Mallorca and Real Betis host Alaves.

Atletico Madrid beat Sevilla 1-0 to displace Barcelona at third position

MADRID: Marcos Llorente’s goal helped Atletico Madrid edge Sevilla 1-0 to displace defending champions Barcelona in third position during their La Liga 2023-24 clash at Civitas Metropolitan Stadium on Saturday.

Atletico Madrid’s last La Liga match ended in a 3-3 stalemate against Getafe after being reduced to ten men, while Sevilla registered their third victory this season over Granada 3-0.

Both teams started the game on high, making two attempts each in the first ten minutes to end this year with a victory.

Antoine Griezmann was at his best, making several attempts to earn the lead for Atletico however, Sevilla’s goalkeeper did not let him get through.

Both sides fought hard in the first half, which ended without a goal from either team.

The home side made two substitutions for the second half as Marcos Llorente replaced Nahuel Molina, while Ángel Correa replaced Rodrigo Riquelme.

Marcos Llorente came off the bench and scored the match-winner in his first minute as he hit a right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right to the bottom left corner.

This was Llorente’s third goal during the ongoing season of La Liga.

Llorente came close to adding a second with a header that hit the top of the net and a shot saved by Sevilla keeper Marko Dmitrovic.

Sevilla made several vain efforts to equalise but could not get through as the home side’s lead remained intact until the final whistle.

Atletico Madrid will face second-placed Girona in their next La Liga match on January 4th, while Sevilla will face Athletic Club on the same day.

Vazquez scores late against Alaves to send Real Madrid to top of La Liga

VITORIA-GASTEIZ: Lucas Vazquez scored in injury time to help Real Madrid register a 1-0 victory over the home side Alaves during the La Liga 2023/24 match at Mendizorrotza Stadium on Thursday.

This victory helped Real Madrid regain the top spot in the La Liga points table as the table-topper Girona drew 1-1 with Real Betis.

The homside Alaves frustrated Real Madrid throughout the first half before the Los Balncos’ defender Nacho Fernandez was sent off 10 minutes after the break.

With the clock going into second-half injury time without any goal, it looked like Girona would lead La Liga going into 2024 thanks to Madrid’s draw, however, 32-year-old Vazquez had other plans.

Experienced Germany midfielder Toni Kroos whipped in a corner and Vazquez opened his account for the season with a free header, as Los Blancos top the table on goal difference before La Liga takes a break until January 2.

Meanwhile, Girona played their last away game of the year against Real Betis at Benito Villamarín Stadium, where both teams settled for a 1-1 stalemate.

The surprise package of La Liga 2023-24 Girona started the game on high and earned a penalty in the 38th minute which was successfully converted by Artem Dovbyk.

This was Dovbyk’s eleventh goal this season, making him the joint-third highest goal scorer in the season.

Girona held on to the lead throughout the second half and they appeared to solidify their top spot in La Liga 2023-24, however, Germán Pezzella rained on their parade with an equalizer in the 88th minute.

Pezzella found William Carvalho’s cross following a corner and hit a right-footed shot from the centre of the box to level the scores 1-1.

In another La Liga game at Iberostar Stadium, Mallorca registered their third victory this season as they defeated Osasuna 3-2 in a five-goal thriller.

La Liga calls European Super League ‘selfish, elitist model’

Spain’s La Liga reacted angrily Thursday to Europe’s top court ruling UEFA and FIFA had broken EU law in stifling the Super League, declaring it is “a selfish and elitist model.”

The two heavyweights of Spanish football Real Madrid and Barcelona had been the final two clubs who remained proponents of the European Super League, but La Liga has firmly opposed to the concept.

“Today, more than ever, we reiterate that the ‘Super League’ is a selfish and elitist model,” La Liga posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“Anything that is not fully open, with direct access only through the domestic leagues, season by season, is a closed format.”

The summary of the European Court of Justice’s written judgment stressed its ruling doesn’t necessarily mean the Super League project should now be authorised, just that FIFA and UEFA have been “abusing a dominant position” in the football market.

“The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful,” it ruled.

A22 Sports, the company promoting the Super League project and who are due to hold a press conference later Thursday in Madrid, claimed victory.

“We have won the right to compete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is free,” the firm’s CEO Bernd Reichart declared in a social media post from the A22 account.

Roberto scores twice to help Barcelona avoid Almeria scare in La Liga

BARCELONA: Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto scored a brace to help his side edge bottom-ranked Almeria in a five-goal La Liga thriller at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

Defending La Liga champions Barcelona solidified their third position after the 3-2 win over the win-less visitors at their temporary home ground, which is hosting their home games this season due to renovations of the Camp Nou.

Barcelona dominated the possession from the beginning and kept the Almeria side under pressure.

Raphinha opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Araujo hit a header following a corner, which was stopped by Almeria goalkeeper Maximiano but Raphinha hit the net on a rebound.

Now in the lead, Xavi’s charges took their foot off the pedal, yet they almost got a second when Robert Lewandowski was gifted the ball in the box by a defender and only another excellent Maximiano save denied him.

This drop in intensity did then prove to be their undoing as just eight minutes later, Leo Baptistao shocked them with an equaliser.

Xavi rang the changes at half-time and sent on Ferran Torres and Jules Kounde in place of Joao Felix and Andreas Christensen.

Torres had an instant impact, working the Portuguese stopper with a firm strike three minutes after half-time.

Poor set-piece defending gave Barca the chance they needed to get back in front on the hour mark, Sergi Roberto meeting a corner at the near post and lofting a header over the goalkeeper’s dive into the far corner.

The second goal appeared to have knocked the stuffing out of the 20th-placed side but a gift from Pena got them back in it when he dropped a lofted free-kick at Edgar’s feet and the defender gleefully rolled the ball into the unguarded net.

Barca had a golden chance to win the game with just over 10 minutes remaining, but Lewandowski then Ilkay Gundogan were unable to make sufficient contact with their headers when the goal was gaping before them.

But it was Sergi Roberto, in just his fifth appearance of the season, that provided the winning goal for the Spanish champions when he burst onto Lewandowski’s lofted pass in the 83rd minute and slotted past Maximiano.

Artem Dovbyk drew first blood for the home side with a header from the centre of the box in the 23rd minute.

Girona doubled their advantage in the 42nd minute with a strike by Portu from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner following a cross by Yan Couto.

The first half ended at 2-0 as the visitors had little resistance to offer against the home side.

With only a few minutes in the second half, Yan Couto earned a penalty which was successfully converted by Artem Dovbyk to extend the lead to 3-0, which remained intact until the final whistle.

This was Artem Dovbyk’s 10th goal during the ongoing season of La Liga.

Girona will next face Real Betis on December 21, having lost only one game out of their 17 games this season.

Real Madrid defender David Alaba suffers cruciate ligament injury

Real Madrid defender David Alaba will be sidelined for months after suffering a severe knee injury in his team’s 4-1 win over Villarreal on Sunday in La Liga.

The Austrian centre-back went off hurt in the first half after attempting to challenge Villarreal forward Gerard Moreno.

“After the tests carried out on our player David Alaba, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” said Madrid in a statement.

“The player will undergo surgery in the coming days.”

Madrid have only two fit central defenders, in Antonio Rudiger and Nacho Fernandez.

Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni returned from injury as a substitute against Villarreal and could be chosen to cover in defence by coach Carlo Ancelotti.

“It’s a shame, it’s very sad, and I’ve never had three cruciate ligament (problems) in four months,” Ancelotti told reporters after David Alaba’s injury.

“We have carried that and done more than what people thought.”

Real Madrid are also without star forward Vinicius Junior, who has a hamstring injury, but Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz have helped fill in for the Brazilian.

All three scored along with Luka Modric in Madrid’s convincing win over Villarreal.
