Shaheen Afridi achieves major landmark in PSL

Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi joined an elusive list of bowlers with 100 wickets in the history of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Shaheen Afridi became only the third bowler to claim 100 wickets during the PSL 9 match against Islamabad United in Rawalpindi yesterday.

He bowled fellow Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah to reach the historic landmark.

Notably, Peshawar Zalmi’s Wahab Riaz was the first player to breach the 100-wicket mark in PSL history.

He is currently the highest wicket-taker in the league’s history with 113 wickets.

Meanwhile, Karachi Kings’ pace bowler Hasan Ali became the second bowler to claim 100 wickets during the ongoing PSL 9.

The right-handed pacer achieved the historic feat when he dismissed Alex Hales during his side’s clash against Islamabad United last week.

Ali is closing on the record for the most wickets in PSL history as he needs only seven wickets to surpass Riaz’s record.

Meanwhile, Afridi-led Lahore Qalandars claimed their first victory in the PSL 9 yesterday by defeating Islamabad United by 17 runs.

Zaman Khan’s four-wicket haul after Rassie van der Dussen’s gutsy half-century helped the defending champions end their winless streak in this season.

Van der Dussen remained the top-scorer for the Qalandars with 64 off 44 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and as many sixes.

Later, David Wiese bolstered Lahore Qalandars’ total to 162 with an unbeaten 24-run cameo. His 11-ball knock featured three boundaries.

In response, Islamabad United’s batting unit unfolded on 145 in 18.5 overs despite Faheem Ashraf’s unbeaten 41.

The home side had a disastrous start to the run chase as they lost six wickets inside seven overs with just 38 runs on the board.

Following the slump, Azam Khan partnered briefly with Faheem Ashraf for an anchoring 35-run partnership which lasted with the former’s departure in the 11th over.

Faheem then put together an important partnership with Naseem Shah when the duo added 42 runs for the eighth wicket.

Naseem scored a brisk 27 off 16 deliveries before falling victim to Afridi in the 16th over.

But Faheem kept the scoreboard ticking and brought United in touching distance to a thrilling victory when they needed 18 off eight deliveries.

However, Zaman Khan trapped Rumman Raees lbw with a ferocious yorker and United, as a result, bundled out on 145 in response to Qalandars’ 162.

Put into bat first, the defending champions, who are yet to win a match in the ongoing tournament could manage a subpar total despite Rassie van der Dussen’s half-century.

The visitors had a disappointing start to their innings as they lost their openers Sahibzada Farhan (2) and Fakhar Zaman (10) inside the batting powerplay with just 16 runs on the board.

The Qalandars then sustained another blow to their batting charge when Shai Hope (6) perished in the sixth over, bringing them down to 30/3 in the seventh over.

Following the slump, Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Shah Afridi promoted himself in the batting order, coming out to bat at No.5.

He offered a brief counterattack with his quickfire cameo and put together a brisk 46-run partnership with van der Dussen before falling victim to his Islamabad United counterpart Shadab Khan in the 11th over.

Afridi smashed four sixes on his way to a 14-ball 30.

But Rassie van der Dussen stood his ground firm and put together brief partnerships with Sikandar Raza (4) and Ahsan Hafeez Bhatti (13) before finally perishing in the 18th over.

He remained the top-scorer for the Qalandars with 64 off 44 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and as many sixes.

Lahore Qalandars knocked out of PSL 9 Playoffs race

RAWALPINDI: Two-time champions Lahore Qalandars have officially been knocked out of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 Playoffs race.

The Qalandars, who won two titles on the trot, failed to register a single victory in this season thus far.

The two-time champions are currently at the bottom of the PSL 9 standings with one point in seven matches.

Their solitary point also came as a result of a washout on Saturday when the persistent rain here washed out their fixture against Peshawar Zalmi.

Due to the constant downpours, the toss was delayed initially as covers were placed on the ground.

The rain stopped briefly, prompting efforts from the groundsmen to dry the ground, but the rain returned, ultimately leading to umpires deciding that no play could be possible.

Lahore Qalandars started their PSL 9 campaign against two-time champions Islamabad United with an eight-wicket defeat.

They then lost against Quetta Gladiators, Multan Sultans, arch-rivals Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi to remain winless at the halfway group stage of the tournament.

Their fortune did not change in the second leg of the PSL 9 as the defending champions again lost to last season’s runners-up Sultans.

Lahore Qalandars are taking on Islamabad United in a bid to taste the first triumph in their eighth PSL 9 fixture.

Usman Khan, Usama Mir power Multan Sultans to thump Lahore Qalandars

LAHORE: Usman Khan played a commanding 96-run knock, followed by Usama Mir’s six-fer to help Multan Sultans register a thumping 60-run victory over Lahore Qalandars during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.

Multan Sultans solidified their position at the top of the PSL 9 points table, while Lahore Qalandars are lying at the bottom after losing six consecutive matches this season.

While chasing a mammoth 215, Lahore Qalandars bundled out at a meagre 154 with three overs to spare.

Lahore Qalandars got a flying start to the pursuit as they raised a 54-run opening pair between Sahibzada Farhan (31) and Fakhar Zaman (23) inside the power play.

However, Multan Sultans’ bowlers removed both batters in six deliveries spanning over two overs to reduce the home side to 56-2 in 6.3 overs.

Rassie van der Dussen and Kamran Ghulam attempted to help Lahore Qalandars recover with a 33-run partnership.

However, Faisal Akram spoiled the party as he dismissed Ghulam (12) in the 10th over with 89 runs on the board.

Sikandar Raza then came out to bat and smashed two sixes to score 17 off seven before he also fell prey to Akram.

Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi promoted himself up in the order but could not help his side get out of the trouble and became the first victim of Mir.

Van der Dussen top-scored for Lahore Qalandars with a cautious 30 off 22, which featured one boundary and one six before he also fell to Mir courtesy of a brilliant catch by Mohammad Rizwan in the outfield.

Van der Dussen’s wicket was followed by the dismissals of George Linde and Jahandad Khan in the same over of Mir, reducing the home team to 132-8.

Mir struck twice in his next over to complete his six-wicket haul and bundle Lahore Qalandars in 17 overs. Carlos Brathwaite remained unbeaten at 14 off seven.

Mir’s bowling figures read 6-40 in four overs, while Akram claimed 2-25.

Earlier, Multan Sultans opted to bat first but Lahore Qalandars drew first blood with captain Shaheen Afridi castling opposing captain Mohammad Rizwan in the first over.

But the Sultans made a comeback quickly with a brilliant 70-run partnership between Reeza Hendricks and Usman Khan before Sikandar Raza struck to dismiss the former.

Hendricks scored a 27-ball 40 with the help of seven boundaries including one six.

Khan continued his onslaught and was involved in a one-sided partnership with Tayyab Tahir, raising 77 runs in only 40 balls for the third wicket.

Tahir scored only 21 runs and was sent to the pavilion by Carlos Brathwaite with the scoreboard reading 151 in 15 overs.

Iftikhar Ahmed joined Khan and wreaked havoc with a blistering unbeaten cameo of 40 runs from 18 balls, which featured two boundaries and three sixes.

Khan on the other hand scored 96 runs from 55 balls, laced with 13 boundaries, including two sixes but missed his hundred as he got out in the final over.

Multan Sultans finished their innings at 214-4 in their allocated 20 overs.

Rauf dislocated his shoulder while taking a crucial catch during his side’s loss in the thrilling clash against Karachi Kings yesterday.

The medical panel consulted him after the match and concluded that the bowler would require four to six weeks to recover from the injury.

“As a team, we are deeply saddened by Haris Rauf’s injury. It was painful to see him missing out as he’s been a pillar of strength for us, and his absence will be felt,” said Afridi.

“In the face of adversity, we stand united, and I have full confidence that the team will rise to the occasion,” Shaheen said on Rauf’s injury.

“It’s indeed a setback for the franchise, but he is also Pakistan’s main bowler, and with a lot of cricket coming up, a pragmatic approach was to give him maximum time to recover.

Mir Hamza credits team effort for victory over Lahore Qalandars

LAHORE: Karachi Kings’ left-arm pace bowler Mir Hamza has attributed the team’s thrilling victory against Lahore Qalandars to the combined team effort.

Karachi Kings edged past Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 clash at Gaddafi Stadium yesterday courtesy of a clinical bowling performance and Kieron Pollard’s blistering half-century.

Mir Hamza, who took the winning single off the last ball, opened up during the post-match press conference about the plan before facing the final ball.

“It was a high-pressure situation but the plan was to not play a lofty shot and go for a ground shot,” said Hamza.

The 31-year-old pacer also commented on the atmosphere at Lahore Qalandar’s home ground, Gaddafi Stadium.

“It is Lahore’s home ground and the crowd was supporting them fully. I enjoyed playing against a full house and performing in such a high-intensity situation,” he expressed.

“Our team effort is the reason for our success as our batters and bowlers are all contributing together. The collective effort has benefited the team,” Hamza remarked.

He also thanked the team management of Karachi Kings for entrusting him with his role as an attacking bowler.

“The management has given me the responsibility to attack, so I am bowling according to my role and trying my best to fulfil the team’s expectations,” he added.

“I would like to give credit to the team management for keeping the environment healthy which brings the best out of every player.”

Kieron Pollard blitz helps Karachi Kings edge Lahore Qalandars in a last-ball thriller

LAHORE: Kieron Pollard’s blistering half-century helped Karachi Kings edge past Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Set to chase 176, Karachi Kings held on to their nerves to chase the total on the final ball with Mir Hamza taking the single to seal the deal.

However, they had a turbulent start to the chase as they lost early wickets and slipped to 44-4 in the power play.

Experienced batters Shoaib Malik and Pollard then joined hands to take Karachi Kings out of the trouble as they knitted a solid 95-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Pollard was the core aggressor of the partnership, smashing five sixes and a four on his way to a 33-ball knock of 58 runs before he miscued one to Shaheen Afridi which landed safely in the hands of Rassie van der Dussen.

Meanwhile, Malik played the anchor’s role with 39 off 32 with the help of three boundaries until he tried to shift gears but fell prey to Haris Rauf.

Lahore Qalandars attempted to force a comeback with timely wickets but Irfan Khan stayed firm keeping the scoreboard moving and took the match to the last over.

With 11 needed off the last over, Hasan Ali smashed the six off the first ball to release the pressure and rotated the strike to level the scores.

But he could not finish the game as he got out with scores levelled, bringing Hamza to the crease, who hit the winning shot.

Ahsan Hafeez and Zaman Khan claimed two wickets for Lahore Qalandars, while Afridi, Jahandad Khan and Rauf bagged one each.

Earlier, Karachi Kings invited the home team to bat first and started brilliantly with the ball as Hamza sent Fakhar Zaman (6) back in the third over.

Sahibzada Farhan and Van der Dussen (26) then knitted an anchoring partnership of 36 runs from as many balls before Tabraiz Shamsi got his South African teammate lbw while attempting a slog sweep.

Farhan stayed firm amidst economical bowling by Karachi Kings, which reduced Lahore Qalandars to 90-4 inside 13 overs.

Shai Hope then played a quick cameo of 21 runs from 13 balls featuring one six and two boundaries before he attempted to clear the boundary again only to get caught by Malik.

George Linde joined Farhan with the scoreboard reading 121-6 but they turned things around with a quick 54-run partnership from 26 balls to lift the team’s total to 175 in their allocated 20 overs.
