GSL 2024: Lahore Qalandars edge past Victoria to keep final hopes alive

GUYANA: Tabraiz Shamsi and Asif Afridi took three wickets each to steer Lahore Qalandars to a narrow ten-run victory over Victoria in the Global Super League (GSL) here at Providence Stadium on Tuesday.

Lahore Qalandars were invited to bat first and they were bundled for 139 in the final over, courtesy of a dominant bowling attack from Victoria.

Opening batter Mirza Baig top-scored with a scratchy 39 off 36, which featured two boundaries and one six.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Akhlaq and Mohammad Faizan played valuable cameos of 26 and 25 respectively to take their team to a respectable total.

No other batters could pose much threat as Dominic Drakes and Jackson Smith took three wickets each to wrap up Lahore Qalandars. Meanwhile, Max Birthisel and Callum Stow bagged one wicket each.

In response, Victoria got off to a brilliant start with the opening stand of 67 runs between Blake Macdonald and Joe Clarke.

However, both batters fell in quick succession to leave Victoria reeling at 73-2 in 8.5 overs.

Blake Macdonald scored 33 off 25 with five boundaries, including one six, while Joe Clarke struck 32 runs from 26 balls, laced with two boundaries and one six.

Lahore Qalandars bowlers did not allow any batter to settle in, except Karima Gore, who struck 25 off 22. However, Gore’s cameo was not enough as Victoria bundled for 129 in 19.3 overs.

Tabraiz Shamsi returned with figures of 3-11, while Asif Afridi claimed three wickets after giving away 31 runs. Salman Mirza also contributed with two wickets and Faheem Ashraf took one wicket.

Notably, this was Lahore Qalandars’ second victory in the inaugural edition of the Global Super League (GSL) and they are sitting third in the points table.

With one last group stage match against the struggling Rangpur Riders ahead, they have a chance to make their case strong for the finals.

Lahore Qalandars edge past Hampshire Hawks to register first victory in GSL 2024

GUYANA: Lahore Qalandars edge past Hampshire Hawks in a thrilling encounter to register their first victory in the ongoing inaugural edition of Global Super League (GSL) here at Providence Stadium on Saturday.

Lahore Qalandars opted to bat first after winning the toss but the decision backfired as they lost two early wickets with only six runs on the board.

Adam Rossington (30) and Mohammad Faizan (19) then knitted a cautious 31-run stand from 28 balls to help their team recover before Benny Howell castled the former.

Tom Abell scored a scratchy 21 off 27 before Luke Wells and Muhammad Akhlaq’s sixth-wicket partnership of 44 runs took Lahore Qalandars to the respectable total of 135-5 in 20 overs.

Wells scored an unbeaten 35 off 24 with one boundary and two sixes while Akhlaq struck 23 off 12 with three sixes.

In response, Hampshire Hawks managaed to score 131-8, courtesy of a discplines bowling performance by Lahore Qalandars.

Opening batter Tom Prest top-scored with 30 off 22, while Benny Howell and James Fuller played quick cameos of 25 and 26* but could not take their team across the line.

They needed 21 runs in the last over bowled by Lahore Qalandars’ captain Carlos Brathwaite and Fuller struck two sixes to take his team close to the victory.

However, they needed five runs off the final ball but Fuller could only manage a single, losing the match by a close four-run margin.

Tabraiz Shamsi took three wickets for Qalandars, while Brathwaite, Wells and Asif Afridi bagged one wicket each.

For the unversed, apart from Lahore Qalandars and Hampshire Hawks, the inaugural season of GSL features Caribbean Premier League (CPL) team Guyana Amazon Warriors, Rangpur Riders of Bangladesh and Victoria from Australia.

Currently, Victoria are placed at the top having defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors in their solitary match. Meanwhile, Rangpur Riders after losing to Hampshire Hawks in the Super Over are lying at the bottom.

Sikandar Raza fined for showing dissent

KARACHI: Lahore Qalandars’ all-rounder Sikandar Raza has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday.

Raza was fined for a Level 1 breach of PSL’s code of conduct for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

The incident occurred during the Lahore Qalandars vs Quetta Gladiators game at National Bank Stadium, Karachi on Sunday night.

The Zimbabwe all-rounder, on three different occasions during the game, raised his arms, shook his head and gestured that the delivery should have been called a wide ball, leading to a violation of article 2.8, which deals with a player showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during a PSL game.

On-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Rashid Riaz levelled the charge against Sikandar Raza while match referee Ali Naqvi imposed the fine.

Raza gave away 32 runs without a wicket in his four overs during Quetta Gladiators’ tense chase of 167 runs.

The Gladiators required 14 off Shaheen Shah Afridi’s final over with their mainstay Saud Shakeel and wicketkeeper batter Laurie Evans at the crease.

They had an unwanted start to the over as Evans fell on the first delivery, courtesy of a sharp catch in the deep by Tahir Baig.

Saud then smashed Shaheen for consecutive boundaries on the third and fourth delivery but managed only a single on the penultimate delivery, leaving the Gladiators needing four from one.

Mohammad Wasim Jr then displayed nerves of steel and heaved Shaheen for a six on the final delivery to seal the victory for his side.

Quetta Gladiators edge Lahore Qalandars in a last-ball thriller to reach PSL 9 Playoffs

KARACHI: Mohammad Wasim Jr smashed a last-ball six to muscle Quetta Gladiators into the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 playoffs with a tense six-wicket victory over Lahore Qalandars here on Sunday.

The enthralling victory led Quetta Gladiators into their first PSL playoffs since winning the title in 2019.

They joined Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United in the final four while the Qualifier and Eliminator ties will be decided after the completion of the group stage matches.

Chasing 167 on a tricky National Bank Cricket Arena’s surface, the Gladiators had to make hard yards to seal the all-important victory.

The 2019 champions required 14 off Shaheen Shah Afridi’s final over with their mainstay Saud Shakeel and wicketkeeper batter Laurie Evans at the crease.

Earlier, Jason Roy gave the Gladiators a flying start to the pursuit by hitting Shaheen for three consecutive boundaries.

But Qalandars’ bowling unit regrouped and managed to stop the flow of runs while Jahandad Khan provided them with important breakthroughs by dismissing Roy (18) and Rilee Rossouw (13) in the sixth and ninth over respectively.

Khawaja Nafay and Saud Shakeel then combined to form an anchoring partnership and kept the scoreboard ticking.

They added 70 runs for the third wicket before Nafay perished in the 18th over after scoring a frustrating 26 off 24 deliveries.

Saud Shakeel carried his bat all the way through and remained the top-scorer for the Gladiators with a well-crafted 88. His 65-ball knock featured five boundaries and four sixes.

Opting to bat first, Lahore Qalandars set a stiff target for Quetta Gladiators in their all-important PSL 9 fixture.

The defending champions had a cautious start to their innings as in-form opener Sahibzada Farhan knitted a 38-run stand with Tahir Baig before both fell victim to Abrar Ahmed in the sixth over.

Farhan scored 25 off 22 deliveries, hitting four boundaries while Baig made a scratchy 12 off 13.

Abdullah Shafique then put on a one-sided partnership with Shai Hope, who managed a mere five off seven deliveries before walking back in the 10th over with just 69 runs on the board.

Promoted himself to bat up the order, Shaheen Shah Afridi partnered strongly with Abdullah Shafique and put Lahore Qalandars in control.

The duo added a monumental partnership for the fourth wicket with both scoring half-centuries in the process.

Their partnership yielded 91 runs off 57 deliveries before Mohammad Amir struck in the final over to get rid of Shaheen.

Qalandars’ skipper smashed two boundaries and four sixes on his way to a 34-ball 55.

Meanwhile, Shafique carried his bat all the way through and top-scored for the Qalandars with an unbeaten 59. His 39-ball knock featured three boundaries and two sixes.

For the Gladiators, Abrar Ahmed bagged two wickets while Amir and Mohammad Wasim Jr made one scalp each.

It is worth mentioning here that the two-time champions and holders Lahore Qalandars are already out of the playoffs race while Quetta Gladiators need one victory out of their remaining two fixtures to seal their spot in the final four.

The Gladiators are fourth in the PSL 9 standings with nine points in eight matches while the Qalandars are at the bottom with three points in nine matches.

Fakhar Zaman sustains injury in high-octane Kings-Qalandars clash

KARACHI: Left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman suffered an injury to his hand during Lahore Qalandars’ away Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 clash against arch-rivals Karachi Kings here at National Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The hard-hitting batter sustained the injury in the penultimate over of the tense run chase when he made a valiant effort and dived forward in the deep to take a potential catch of the Kings’ all-rounder Anwar Ali.

Zaman, however, failed to get his beneath the ball and it bounced off the surface before settling his hand.

He was then seen favouring his hand while Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Shah Afridi was having a long discussion with the on-field umpire regarding the TV Umpire’s decision.

As a result, Fakhar Zaman was not available for Lahore Qalandars’ last PSL 9 fixture as they take on former champions Quetta Gladiators on Sunday.

In-form opener Sahibzada Farhan replaced him in the Qalandars’ Playing XI.

Speaking at the toss, Shaheen Afridi reflected upon his team’s dismal PSL 9 campaign and confirmed the absence of Fakhar Zaman.

“Result wise it’s very tough, as a team we fought in every game, 6-7 games were really close. Two changes, unfortunately, Fakhar got a fracture on his finger,” Shaheen Afridi said at the toss.

It is worth mentioning here that the two-time champions and holders Lahore Qalandars are already out of the playoffs race while Quetta Gladiators need one victory out of their remaining two fixtures to seal their spot in the final four.

The Gladiators are fourth in the standings with nine points in eight matches while the Qalandars are at the bottom with three points in nine matches.

Malik, Irfan power Karachi Kings to a thrilling victory over Lahore Qalandars

KARACHI: Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Irfan Khan displayed nerves of steel and guided Karachi Kings to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Lahore Qalandars in the 26th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here on Saturday.

The enthralling victory kept Karachi Kings in contention to make it to the playoffs as they moved just one point shy of Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United, sitting fourth and third place respectively.

Chasing 178 on a tricky National Bank Stadium surface, the home side knocked the winning runs when Shoaib Malik slashed Zaman Khan for a boundary on the final delivery.

The home side got off to a flying start to the pursuit, courtesy of a quickfire opening stand between James Vince and Tim Seifert, which yielded 59 runs.

The sensational stand lasted in the seventh over when Tayyab Abbas got Vince caught behind on 42. His 27-ball knock featured six boundaries and a six.

Karachi Kings’ skipper Shan Masood then joined Seifert and knitted an anchoring 40-run partnership before walking back in the 12th over.

Masood scored a 16-ball 24 with the help of three boundaries.

The Kings then lost two more wickets — Kieron Pollard (3) and Seifert (33) — in quick succession and consequently slipped to 113/4 in 14.2 overs.

But Irfan and Malik kept the hosts in the hunt with a sensible partnership which saw them adding 52 runs for the fifth wicket off just 25 deliveries until the former departed in the penultimate over after a match-defining knock.

Irfan scored a quickfire 35 off 16 deliveries, peppered with six boundaries.

But Malik hung on and brought his vast experience into play to guide Karachi Kings to a nerve-testing victory.

He scored an unbeaten 27 off 17 deliveries, hitting four boundaries.

Tayyab Abbas led the bowling charge for the Qalandars with 2/23 while Sikandar Raza, Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi struck out a batter each.

Put into bat first, the Qalandars, who are already out of the playoffs race, notched up a decent total on the board, courtesy of an anchoring second-wicket partnership.

The visitors, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their opener Tahir Baig in the third over with just 16 runs on the board.

Following the early stutter, Fakhar joined Abdullah in the middle and they combined to launch an astounding recovery for the Qalandars.

The pair added 70 runs for the second wicket at a brisk rate.

Fakhar Zaman was the core aggressor of the stand and brought up his half-century in the process off just 32 deliveries.

The left-handed batter had an agonizing end to his brave knock as a direct hit from Muhammad Irfan Khan sent him packing in the 11th over.

He scored 54 off 35 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and two sixes.

Following Fakhar’s dismissal, Abdullah took charge of the Qalandars’ batting expedition and changed gears to bring up his half-century in 36 deliveries.

He put together a brief partnership with Shai Hope (9) before finally perishing in the 17th over.

Abdullah Shafique remained the top-scorer for the Qalandars with a 39-ball 55 which featured five boundaries and a six.

Later, Sikandar Raza and David Wiese bolstered Lahore Qalandars to a formidable total with a quickfire 46-run stand.

Raza scored 22 off 16 deliveries while Wiese smashed three sixes on his way to a nine-ball 24.

Zahid Mahmood led the bowling attack for Karachi Kings with two wickets while Blessing Muzarabani and Anwar Ali made one scalp each.

Aaqib Javed opens up about Lahore Qalandars’ struggles in PSL 9

KARACHI: Former pacer Aaqib Javed, the head coach of Lahore Qalandars, has opened up about his team’s struggles during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

The defending champions Lahore Qalandars suffered six consecutive losses in the PSL 9 and crashed out of the playoff race.

Javed, while talking to the media in Karachi, stated that the availability and injury issues of their players were the major factors behind the team’s dismal performance.

“We tried to create a balanced team, however, David Wiese’s injury, Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s as well as other players’ absence caused problems for the team,” said the former pacer.

“Rashid Khan has always been the best option for our team, but unfortunately he could not participate this season.”

Aaqib Javed also reflected on Lahore Qalandars’ approach in the remaining games against Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators.

“We lost some matches in the last minute. But now it is a matter of honour for our team to win the remaining matches,” he remarked.

He expressed hope that his team will turn things around in the match against arch-rivals Karachi Kings.

“Although we failed to defeat Karachi Kings for the past few games, they do not have a psychological advantage over us,” Aaqib Javed said.

“We have to play positive cricket and we can make a comeback,” he added.

He also praised Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi, who completed 100 wickets in PSL during their match against Islamabad United.

“Shaheen [Afridi] has crossed the milestone of 100 wickets in PSL. It is a matter of honour for our team.”
