This tournament marks the return of the ICC Champions Trophy after an eight-year break, with the last tournament being held in 2017, where Pakistan defeated their arch-rivals India in the final.

The eight-team tournament will feature 15 matches over 19 days, taking place in Pakistan and Dubai.

The teams are divided into two groups for the initial stage. Each team will play three group-stage matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

New Zealand suffer major blow ahead of Champions Trophy opener against Pakistan

New Zealand suffered a major blow ahead of the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against hosts Pakistan as fast bowler Lockie Ferguson was ruled out of the tournament with a foot injury.

Ferguson sustained the injury during the warm-up match against Afghanistan in Karachi on Sunday, where he experienced pain in his right foot after bowling a spell.

Following an initial medical assessment, it was confirmed that the speedster would not recover in time for the tournament.

With the Champions Trophy set to kick off tomorrow and its short duration making a return unlikely, the decision was made to send Lockie Ferguson back home for rehabilitation.

In his absence, pacer Kyle Jamieson has been drafted into the Blackcaps squad and is set to depart for Pakistan this evening.

Jamieson recently made a successful comeback to domestic cricket in December after a 10-month recovery from a back stress fracture.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Ferguson’s injury, acknowledging the pacer’s importance to the team.

“We’re really disappointed for Lockie [Ferguson],” Stead said. “He’s a key part of our bowling attack and brings valuable experience in major tournaments.”

“We know how much he was looking forward to playing, and we hope he makes a swift recovery.”

However, Stead is confident that Jamieson can step up and fill the void left by Ferguson.

“Kyle brings extra pace and bounce, which will be effective in these conditions,” Stead added.

“He’s been bowling with great energy since his return and has shown his ability in the shorter formats. Given his recent workload and performances, he’s ready if needed in the tournament.”

New Zealand will kick off their Champions Trophy 2025 against Pakistan on 19 February at Karachi’s newly renovated National Bank Stadium.

They will then travel to Rawalpindi for the match against Bangladesh, scheduled on 24 February, while their final group match is scheduled against India in Dubai on 2 March.

WATCH: Rachin Ravindra takes nasty blow to the head in scary incident

New Zealand star batter Rachin Ravindra coped with a nasty blow while taking a catch off Michael Bracewell in the first match of the tri-nation series against Pakistan on Saturday at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

The incident happened in the 37th over of the match when Pakistan’s batter Khushdil Shah slog-swept Michael Bracewell to the deep square leg.

Ravindra positioned himself to take a catch, however, he lost sight of the ball in the floodlights, and it struck him in the forehead. As medical personnel hurried onto the pitch, he was observed looking at the ground, seemingly dazed with blood streaming down his face.

Following the all-rounder’s injury, the crowd fell silent in shock. Rachin Ravindra lay on the ground for a few minutes while receiving first aid, but with the help of the medical team, he got up and left the pitch with a towel to his head to cheers from the crowd at Gaddafi Stadium, which had just been full of energy.

Tri-nation series: Glenn Phillips powers New Zealand to victory against Pakistan

LAHORE: Glenn Phillips scored an unbeaten 106 runs, while a strong bowling attack helped New Zealand achieve a convincing victory against Pakistan in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a daunting 331-run target, Pakistan got off to a promising start with the new opening pair of Fakhar and Babar Azam putting together a brisk 52-run stand.

Fakhar was the aggressor from the get-go, while Babar took a more cautious approach. However, just as the powerplay ended, Michael Bracewell got the breakthrough, dismissing Babar for a sluggish 10 off 23 balls.

Fakhar then forged another crucial partnership, adding 51 runs for the second wicket with Kamran Ghulam, who struggled for fluency and managed 18 off 32 deliveries.

The left-handed opener continued to anchor the innings and shared a brief stand with skipper Mohammad Rizwan (3) before eventually perishing in the 24th over.

Fakhar top-scored for Pakistan with a resilient 84 off 69 balls, smashing seven boundaries and four sixes, but his departure left a massive void in the chase.

From there, vice-captain Salman Ali Agha tried to steady the ship, forming key partnerships with Tayyab Tahir (30) and Khushdil Shah (15), but New Zealand’s disciplined attack kept striking at regular intervals.

Agha showed some fight, scoring a 51-ball 40 with two fours and a six, but Bracewell cut short his stay.

Lower down the order, Abrar Ahmed provided some late resistance with an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls, but by then, the match had already slipped out of Pakistan’s hands.

New Zealand’s bowling attack was clinical, with Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry picking up three wickets each, while Bracewell chipped in with two to seal a comfortable win for the visitors.

Earlier, New Zealand opted to bat first in the opening match of the tri-nation series, however, Shaheen Shah Afridi gave Pakistan an early advantage, dismissing Will Young (4) caught behind on just the fourth delivery of the match.

Meanwhile, Abrar Ahmed removed Rachin Ravindra (25) to leave New Zealand reeling at 39-2 in 7.4 overs.

However, New Zealand fought back through a 95-run third-wicket stand between Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, shifting the momentum in their favour.

Just when the game seemed to be slipping away from Pakistan, Shaheen stepped up again, breaking the partnership by removing Williamson in the 27th over to halt the momentum of New Zealand.

The former New Zealand captain played a cautious 58-run knock from 89 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Haris Rauf further dented New Zealand’s innings in the very next over, dismissing Tom Latham for a duck, putting Pakistan back in control.

However, Mitchell kept New Zealand in the game with his attacking batting as he knitted a 65-run stand with Glenn Phillips for the fifth wicket to take his team’s total to 200.

Abrar returned to the attack and provided the much-need breakthrough, dismissing Mitchell, who was playing on 81 with the help of four sixes and two boundaries.

Following Mitchell’s dismissal, Glenn Phillips switched gears and bolstered New Zealand’s total past the 300-run mark with an unbeaten 106 off 74 deliveries, laced with six fours and seven sixes.

He was also involved in a 54-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Michael Bracewell, who made a 23-ball 31, laced with one four and three sixes.

For Pakistan, Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up three wickets, followed by Abrar with two, while Haris Rauf made one scalp.

Star New Zealand pacer doubtful for tri-nation ODI series, Champions Trophy 2025

Star New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson is suffering from a hamstring injury and his participation in the upcoming tri-nation ODI series as well as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 remains uncertain.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is awaiting the results of his scans for the hamstring injury he sustained while playing for the Desert Vipers in the ILT20 on February 5. He was unable to bowl the final ball of his spell and left the field due to the injury.

“Just a little hamstring issue, unfortunate. Tough night; wish I could’ve bowled the last ball,” said Ferguson after the match.

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead stated on Friday that the side was waiting on the results of the pacer’s scans ahead of the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series against Pakistan.

“Lockie had a scan yesterday [Thursday] in the UAE. We’ve got the images here and [we are] waiting for our radiologist to give us a report on the extent of it,” the New Zealand coach said.

“Small hamstring injury, by the look of it, so we’re just waiting on a timeline of advice around that before we make a decision on whether Lockie travels here [Pakistan] or whether we do have to replace him for the Champions Trophy 2025,” he added.
