LAHORE: Gwadar Sharks bowlers displayed a combined effort to decimate Rawalpindi Raiders’ on a paltry 116 and powered their side to a resounding 34-run victory in the third match of the ongoing Pakistan Junior League (PJL).

Batting first on the invitation of the Raiders’ captain Habibullah, the Sharks put on a decent performance with the bat to pose a commendable 150/5 in the allotted 20 overs.

Left-handed batter Arafat Minhas top-scored for his side with a magnificent knock of 40. His 24-ball innings featured three boundaries and two sixes.

Besides Arafat, foreign batter Luc Martin Benkenstein chipped in with a vital 33 up the order and laid a solid foundation for a competitive total. He faced 25 deliveries and smashed four boundaries.

The rest of the Sharks batters also made important contributions with the bat and the side as a result set a decent target for the Raiders.

Afnan Khan was the pick of the bowlers for the Raiders as he bagged three wickets for a mere 20, while Usman Khan and Amir Hassan struck out a batter each.

Set to chase 151, the Raiders’ batting lineup failed completely and skittled for a skimpy 116 in 19 overs, thus, handing a remarkable 34-run victory to the Sharks.

Aseer Mughal and Wahaj Riaz resisted with gritty knocks of 26 and 23 respectively, while the rest of their batters seemed clueless against the Sharks’ bowling attack.

In the second fixture of the ongoing PJL, the Royals sealed a dominating victory over the Hunters by eight wickets with 44 balls to spare.

Batting first on the invitation of the Royals captain Obaid Shahid, the Hunters’ batting line-up failed completely and could only accumulate 113 before bundling out in the 19th over.

The Hunters had a decent start to their innings as they were 61/1 in the seventh over before Nathan Edward broke the important second-wicket partnership that saw Saad Baig and Moiz Rana add 47 runs.

Saad, who fell victim to Edward in the seventh over, remained the top-scorer for his side as he scored 34 off 24 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and a six.

Following his dismissal, the side then ran into a frustrating collapse and could not recover despite Muneeb Wasif’s gritty knock of 26 in the middle.

Aimal, Thomas star as Mardan Warriors start PJL campaign with a win

Set to chase a paltry 132, the Warriors comfortably steered to the glory in the 17th over for the loss of two wickets, thanks to their openers Thomas and Shahzaib Khan.

The opening pair laid a solid foundation for the run chase as they accumulated 101 runs for the first wicket before Shahzaib missed on his well-deserved half-century by five runs.

Shahzaib scored 45 off 39 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and two sixes.

Thomas, who was dominating the Giants bowlers, also fell in the next over briefly after amassing his fifty and scored 50 off just 32 balls including five boundaries and three sixes.

Warriors’ skipper Abbas Ali (10*) and Olly Cox (19*) then partnered sensibly for the third wicket and made sure to drive their side over the line as they put on an unbeaten 27-run partnership.

Mohammad Ibtisam and Shan could manage to make a scalp each for the Giants.

The Giants, batting first on the invitation of Warriors captain Abbas, could only manage to amass 131/7 in 20 overs despite a brilliant half-century from their captain Umair Mumtaz.

The right-handed batter scored 54 off 47 with the help of seven boundaries.

Besides Mumtaz, the Giants batter failed to make an impact and seemed clueless against Warriors’ bowling attack and thus could not bolster their side to a defendable total.

Right-arm pacer Aimal was the pick of the bowlers for the Warriors as he returned with magnificent figures of 3/15 in his four overs, while Mohammad Nabeel and Abidullah bagged two wickets each.

“Returning to Lahore for the Pakistan Junior League in a team mentor’s role is one of my most satisfying achievements as I still owe a lot to my country of birth. This is an exciting opportunity to work with emerging slow bowlers and help them develop and flourish so that they have a chance to emulate the great spinners this country has produced,” Imran stated.

“I am fully behind the philosophy of Pakistan Junior League as this creates a tough and challenging environment for the players with high expectations, and only those who will clear this scale will go leaps and bounds in their careers. With the amount of international cricket being played, this event will help Pakistan to amplify their pool of players, which, in turn, will increase playing opportunities and earning the prized national cap,” he added.

Explosive Kiwi batter Munro, on the other hand, termed the initiative as a game-changer for Pakistan cricket and lauded the PCB for investing in youngsters and securing the future of the game.

“I am excited to be part of the inaugural Pakistan Junior League, which I believe will be a game-changer for Pakistan cricket. Investing in youngsters, securing the future of the game and ensuring the national side continues to move in an upward direction should be the objectives of all administrators and I think the PCB has taken a lead here by launching this tournament, which will expose the young talent to the rigours and demands of top-level cricket and help Pakistan in the longer run,” Munro stated.

“Working with youngsters, sharing knowledge and helping them grow in their careers is something that interests and excites me, and I am really looking forward to being a part of the Pakistan Junior League. Having seen firsthand experienced the tremendous talent at the HBL Pakistan Super League, I have no doubts the Pakistan Junior league will produce future champions of world cricket,” he added.
