Pakistan Shaheens back on winning track in Top End T20 Series

DARWIN: Sahibzada Farhan’s anchoring 45-run knock after a solid bowling performance, led Pakistan Shaheens to thump Tasmania in the ongoing Top End T20 Series.

Batting first, Tasmania’s batting unit unfolded on a meagre total of 124, courtesy of a splendid display with the ball by Imran Khan Junior.

Imran led Pakistan Shaheens’ bowling charge with three wickets, followed by Jahandad Khan and Abbas Afridi, who picked two wickets each.

In response, Pakistan Shaheens comfortably chased down the target for the loss of five wickets and 30 balls to spare.

Leading the way was Sahibzada Farhan, who batted sensibly in the run-chase and remained the top-scorer for his side with a 45-run knock.

He was supported by Omair Bin Yousuf, who scored 32.

Pakistan Shaheens next face Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Melbourne Renegades in their next fixture of the Top End T20 Series on August 15.

For the unversed, the Shaheens had a dream start to the series as they outclassed Perth Scorchers by 17 runs.

The Shaheens posted a competitive total of 188-7 in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of a 35-ball 57 from Usman Khan.

Usman, batting at four, walked into bat at the end of the powerplay and struck four boundaries and three sixes in this outing keeping the Shaheens innings intact.

In pursuit of the 189-run target, Perth Scorchers fell short by 17 runs despite a quickfire half-century by Corey Wasley.

Wasley scored 54 off 27 deliveries and was involved in a threatening 58-run fourth-wicket stand with Joel Curtis, which was eventually broken by legspinner Arif Yaqoob in the 11th over.

In the second fixture of the Top End T20 Series, Pakistan Shaheens succumbed to a 47-run thrashing by Melbourne Stars.

Trophy for Pakistan Shaheens’ red-ball series against Bangladesh A unveiled

ISLAMABAD: The glittering trophy for the two-match red-ball series between Pakistan Shaheens and Bangladesh A was unveiled at the Islamabad Club here on Monday.

Pakistan Shaheens will face Bangladesh ‘A’ in the first four-day match at the Islamabad Club from 13-16 August. The second four-day match will be played at the same venue from 20-23 August.

The two sides had most recently played a two-match series in Darwin, Australia, which ended in 1-1.

Both Pakistan Shaheens and Bangladesh ‘A’ have packed their sides with players who will feature in the ICC World Test Championship fixtures, to be played in Rawalpindi and Karachi on 21-25 August and 30 August-3 September, respectively.

This is due to the fact that both Pakistan and Bangladesh have not played a Test since January and March, respectively.

Pakistan’s last Test was against Australia in Sydney, while Bangladesh previous appearance in the current ICC World Test Championship cycle was against Sri Lanka at home in March.

Test probables in the Pakistan Shaheens are Saud Shakeel (captain), Kamran Ghulam, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub and Sarfaraz Ahmed, while Hasan Mahmud, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nayeem Hasan and Zakir Hasan are Bangladesh ‘A’ players who will join the Test side following the four-day match.

Saud Shakeel, who was recently named Pakistan Test vice-captain and has previously led Pakistan Shaheens red-ball side against Sri Lanka ‘A’ in October-November 2021, will captain the home side in the first four-day match. Anamul Haque, who has represented Bangladesh in 74 international matches to date, will captain Bangladesh ‘A’.

In the past three years, the Shaheens have played six four-dayers – winning three, losing one and drawing two. The Shaheens began their preparations for the red-ball series on 7 August at the Islamabad Club under the supervision of head coach Umar Gul, while Bangladesh ‘A’ arrived in Islamabad on 10 August.

Sameen Gul has been withdrawn from Pakistan Shaheens squad as a precautionary measure. A replacement will be announced in due course.

Speaking ahead of the series, Shaheens’ captain Saud Shakeel said it is an honour to lead the side while terming the fixtures crucial for the national players as they had not played red-ball cricket recently.

“It is an honour for me to lead the Pakistan Shaheens team. I have led this team on a few occasions in the past. I always enjoy my captaincy as I get involved in the game more than usual.

“This four-day series is crucial as some of the players have not played red-ball cricket recently. So, the match starting on Tuesday will serve as an important opportunity for the Test probables to gear up and be fully prepared and ready for the upcoming challenges that include nine ICC World Test Championship Tests.

“Bangladesh are always competitive, particularly with spin. We look forward to the challenge on our home turf.”

Bangladesh A captain Anamul Haque shared his excitement for the challenge of facing Pakistan Shaheens in their backyard and specifically acknowledged their pace bowling strength. He further echoed Shakeel’s remarks, highlighting the importance of the series.

“We have been very excited about facing the Pakistan Shaheens side in their backyard. The Shaheens squad looks strong, especially the fast bowling department. With the highly experienced players on either side, the first four-dayer will be highly competitive.

“This series is also crucial for the Bangladesh players looking to prepare for the upcoming Test series and youngsters who aim to stake a claim in the senior side.”

Pakistan Shaheens squad (for first four-day match):  Saud Shakeel (captain), Kamran Ghulam, Mehran Mumtaz, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Rameez Jnr, Mohammad Huraira, Naseem Shah, Saad Baig (wicket-keeper), Saad Khan, Saim Ayub, Sarfaraz Ahmed (wicket-keeper) and Umar Amin

Bangladesh ‘A’ squad (for first four-day match):  Anamul Haque (captain), Hasan Mahmud, Hasan Murad, Mahidul Islam Ankon, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nayeem Hasan, Rejaur Rahman Raja, Ruyel Miah, Sahadat Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Zakir Hasan.

Bangladesh all-rounder pulls out of Pakistan tour

Pace bowling all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has pulled himself out of the upcoming Bangladesh A’s tour of Pakistan on Thursday.

Saifuddin was named in Bangladesh A squad for the second of the two-match red ball series against Pakistan, as well as the white-ball matches.

However, the 27-year-old all-rounder withdrew himself from the tour through an email to Bangladesh selectors, citing mental exhaustion. He also requested to take a two-month break from all forms of cricket.

Saifuddin also conveyed his disappointment via email about not being chosen for the ICC T20 World Cup squad in June and his inability to participate in the ongoing Global T20 in Canada due to the unrest in the country.

“Due to these matters, I want to keep myself away from all forms of cricket for the next two months. Hopefully, you will take the matter in a positive way,” Saifuddin’s email read.

Meanwhile, the officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have informed that Mohammad Saifuddin was granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to take part in the GT20.

However, he sustained a rib injury while working out at the gym just two days before his scheduled flight. As a result, the BCB advised him against travelling to Canada for the tournament.

Bangladesh A squad is set to arrive in Islamabad on Saturday, 10 August, for two four-day and three 50-over matches against Pakistan Shaheens.
