Saud clears air about declaring before Rizwan’s double-century

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan vice-captain Saud Shakeel defended the decision to declare the innings while Mohammad Rizwan was nearing his maiden double-century on the second day of the opening Test against Bangladesh.

Rizwan missed out on a well-deserved double-century as Pakistan declared their first innings at 448/6.

He remained the top-scorer for the home side with an unbeaten 171 off 239 deliveries, laced up with 11 fours and three sixes, followed by Saud, who scored 141 with the help of nine boundaries.

Many fans raised their concern over social media regarding the timing of the declaration, however, Saud defended the decision. He explained that Rizwan was informed about the decision an hour before it was made.

“As far as Rizwan bhai’s double century is concerned, I don’t think the decision to declare was rushed,” Shakeel stated.

“Rizwan bhai was informed about an hour before that we would be declaring at this point. He knew our target was to approach 450 runs before declaring.”

With his monumental knock, the 32-year-old Rizwan joined the elite group of Pakistani wicketkeepers who crossed the 150-run mark in Test cricket, which includes Imtiaz Ahmed, Taslim Arif, Rashid Latif, and Kamran Akmal.

This marks the first time since 2009 that a wicketkeeper-batsman from Pakistan has scored 150 runs in a single Test match.

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced free entry for spectators for the remaining days (fourth and fifth) of the first Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The decision was made keeping in view of the weekend, which will allow families and students to turn up in maximum numbers to support their cricketing stars and witness action between the two sides.

Spectators are required to bring their original CNIC or B-form to enter the stadium and they will be able to watch the action free of cost from any of the VIP enclosures (Imran Khan and Javed Miandad) (for families only) and premium enclosures (Miran Baksh, Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir and Yasir Arafat).

The free entry policy does not apply to the tickets purchased for the PCB Gallery or Platinum Box. Meanwhile, fans who have already bought tickets for the fourth and fifth days will get a refund.

Tickets bought online will be automatically refunded to the credit/debit card used for purchase. For tickets purchased at Express Centres, the fans are requested to bring their original ticket to the centre to get a refund.

Additionally, to further facilitate the fans, a free shuttle bus service will continue to operate on two routes on matchdays for ease of access to the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium for spectators.

Route 1 will run from Aviation Ground, Rawal Road, Murree Road to Allama Iqbal Park Entrance Gate while Route 2 will go from Government Satellite Town College for Boys, 6th Road, Murree Road to Allama Iqbal Park Entrance Gate.

Notably, the two-match series between Pakistan and Bangladesh is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) and will run from August 21 to September 4 with both matches to be played at the same venue.

Saud Shakeel breaks India’s Vinod Kambli’s 29-year-old Test record

Pakistan’s left-handed middle-order batter Saud Shakeel broke India’s Vinod Kambli’s long-standing record in the first innings of the opening Test against Bangladesh here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

The southpaw achieved the feat of accumulating the most number of runs by an Asian batter after 20 Test innings, going past India’s Kambli, who had 1,056 runs after as many innings.

Saud amassed the milestone when he breached the 90-run barrier amid his marathon knock against Bangladesh. Prior to this innings, he had 967 runs to his name in 19 outings.

Besides Saud Shakeel and Vinod Kambli, the only other batters to accumulate more than one thousand runs after 20 Test innings are India’s Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara and Pakistan’s Saeed Ahmed.

Overall, Saud Shakeel is 17th on the list of batters with the most Test runs after 20 innings, led by one of the greats to ever play the game, Don Bradman.

The current part of the all-time elusive list are England’s Harry Brook with 1,181 runs and Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 1,166.

Yesterday, Saud Shakeel also became the joint-fastest Pakistan batter to amass 1000 runs in Test cricket.

The 28-year-old joined Saeed Ahmed on the elusive list as both batters took 20 innings to achieve the milestone.

Sadiq Mohammad conceded 22 innings while legendary batter Javed Miandad took 23.

Bangladesh openers cautious after Pakistan declare at 448/6

RAWALPINDI: Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remained unbeaten at the conclusion of Day 2 of the first Test after Pakistan declared their first innings at 448/6.

The touring party got to 27/0 in 12 overs with Shadman and Zakir contributing 12 and 11 respectively. They are 421 runs behind.

Pakistan declared their innings at 448/6 with Mohammad Rizwan unbeaten on 171.

When Pakistan captain Shan Masood called for the declaration, Rizwan was just 29 runs away from his maiden Test double century while Shaheen Shah Afridi was unbeaten with a 24-ball 29.

Rizwan remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with an undefeated 171 off 239 deliveries, laced up with 11 fours and three sixes.

Pakistan added 81 runs to their total in the second session while Bangladesh struck once when Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Salman Ali Agha on 19.

Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud each bagged two wickets for Bangladesh while Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz shared two wickets between them.

Earlier, at the conclusion of the first session of Day 2, Pakistan reached 367/5 at the end of the second session with Mohammad Rizwan standing strong with a knock of 134 runs. Meanwhile, Salman Ali Agha, who replaced Shakeel on the crease, was unbeaten on seven.

Babar Azam bags an unwanted first in Test cricket

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan ace batter Babar Azam was dismissed for a duck for the first time on home soil on the opening day of the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Babar, one of the most consistent batters in world cricket, perished without disturbing the scoreboard.

Coming out to bat at No.4 with Pakistan reeling at 14/2, Babar faltered on a length delivery around his legs off Shoriful Islam to fall for a two-ball duck.

The Bangladesh pacer, ahead of the series, expressed his desire to dismiss Babar and termed him as a “dream wicket”.

“Babar is a tough challenge for Bangladesh. So, we have to take his wicket quickly. He is also my dream wicket. I will be very happy if I can get his wicket. I played with him last year in the CPL. He is a very good person,” Shoriful had said.

Prior to the ongoing fixture, Babar had played 24 innings in 14 Tests at home and did not get out on a duck.

Saim reached the milestone on the last ball of Shoriful Islam’s eighth over on the opening day of the Rawalpindi Test.

The swashbuckling opening batter, playing his second Test, struck four boundaries and one six on his way to a 76-ball half-century.

Saim Ayub made his international debut in March 2023 during a T20I match against Afghanistan, while his Test debut came earlier this year during Pakistan’s tour of Australia.
