‘We don’t let such things affect our team’ Babar replies to critics

KARACHI: After sealing a clinical 10-wicket win over England in the second T20I, Pakistan captain Babar Azam refrained from engaging in a bout of words with the team’s detractors and analysts who hurled severe criticism over its batting strategy.

“I am no one to give them (critics) a reply,” said Babar in a post-match press conference. “Things which are beyond our control we simply don’t listen to them and don’t even let those to enter into the team.”

Babar smashed a magnificent 110 off 66 balls laced with 11 fours and five sixes, guiding the national team to a perfect win on Thursday here at National Stadium, Karachi.

Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan combined excellently with Babar as he scored 88 off 51 and the opening pair chased down a massive 200-run target without the loss of a wicket.

“Obviously we play and gear things up according to the situation. Everyone has their own point of view. Our job is to give performances and win matches for Pakistan” he added.

Talking about the brilliant chemistry between the two openers as they recorded the highest-ever run chase in the T20I history without losing a single wicket, Babar stated they had already chased down massive targets in the past as well.

“I think our communication is quite good. Sometimes we don’t even call and take a run because we have built a kind of trust level, which is indeed necessary,” he maintained.

Furthermore, the skipper explained that the decision to replace Mohammad Hasnain with Naseem Shah in the playing lineup—which proved counter-productive because the speedster went for 51 runs in his four overs—was taken to assess the team’s bench strength.

With the phenomenal win, Pakistan have levelled the historic seven-match T20I series 1-1 against England.

‘We’ll make changes in third T20I’ Moeen after England’s loss

KARACHI: England captain Moeen Ali announced to make changes in the touring side’s Playing XI for the third T20I of the historic seven-match series following their 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the second T20I on Thursday.

Moeen, while talking to the media after England’s 10-wicket loss to England in the second T20I, acknowledged the blunders made by the touring side in the match and also announced that the side would consider making changes for the next match, scheduled on Friday.

“We did not play well and also dropped a few catches. We tried to break the partnership but credit goes to Babar and Rizwan as they did not let it happen,” said Moeen.

“But, we also played good cricket overall and scored more runs which was quite a positive for us. We will make changes in the third match,” Moeen confirmed.

The English captain further opined regarding his Pakistan counterpart Babar Azam, who had been facing a lot of criticism for a paltry strike rate and shared that the former thinks the opposite.

“Babar was facing a lot of criticism for an allegedly lower strike rate. But, I don’t think his strike rate is bad,” said Moeen.

Moeen then went on to comment on the pitch and the playing conditions and acknowledged that the touring side was expecting it to be more favourable for the spin.

“We were hoping that the wicket would be more favourable for the spinners. Karachi’s wicket seemed normal to us,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan cruised to a perfect 10-wicket victory in the second T20I courtesy of an astounding performance from their openers Babar and Mohammad Rizwan, who proved lethal for the English bowling attack.

Babar smashed a magnificent 110 off 66 balls laced with 11 fours and five sixes, guiding the national team to a brilliant 10-wicket win against England.

Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan combined excellently with Babar as he scored 88 off 51 and the opening pair chased down a massive 200-run target without the loss of a wicket.

Centurion Babar, Rizwan cruise Pakistan to a perfect win in second T20I

KARACHI: Pakistan’s opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan proved lethal as the duo powered the men in green to a perfect 10-wicket victory over England in the second T20I as they amassed 200 runs in the final over.

Set to chase a mammoth 200 in the second T20I, the Pakistan opening duo decimated the English bowling attack as they stitched an astonishing run chase for the men in green.

The duo stood firm and charged England bowlers with clean striking and brilliant running between the wickets and remained unbeaten in a perfect run chase to power their side to a 10-wicket victory.

Pakistan captain Babar, who had a forgetful Asia Cup 2022, ended his struggling phase as he smashed an astonishing century to script a perfect victory for his side. He scored 110 not out off just 66 deliveries, laced with 11 boundaries and five sixes.

Rizwan, on the other hand, scored an unbeaten 88 off 51 deliveries including five boundaries and four sixes.

England bowlers had a forgetful outing in the second T20I of the seven-match series as none of the touring bowlers could open their account.

Following this magnificent victory, Pakistan levelled the series 1-1 with five games to spare. The two sides will meet again on Friday at the same venue.

Batting first, England batters displayed combined effort and took on Pakistan bowlers to finish at a mammoth 199/5 in the allotted 20 overs, at the back of a quickfire half-century from their skipper Moeen.

England openers Alex Hales and Phil Salt gave the touring side a flying start as the pair amassed 42 runs for the first wicket in just five overs.

Right-arm pacer Shahnawaz Dahani then made back-to-back strikes in the sixth over to reduce England to 48/2 after the powerplay. The right-arm pacer removed Hales and Dawid Malan in his consecutive strikes. Hales scored 26 off 21 deliveries, while Malan bagged a golden duck.

Following the slump, Salt then joined hands with Ben Duckett and made sure to keep the run rate intact as the pair added 53 runs for the third wicket at a rapid pace.

The stand was majorly dominated by Duckett, who was dominating the Pakistan bowlers with blistering strikes while Salt was struggling to emulate his heroics, and, as a result, fell victim to Haris Rauf in the 12th over. He scored 30 off 27 deliveries, laced with one boundary and a six.

Duckett’s stay at the crease also remained brief as he perished in the next over after scoring a quickfire 43 off 22 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

England skipper Moeen and all-rounder Harry Brook then stood up for their side and put on a match-defining 59-run partnership for the fifth wicket, that bolstered England to a massive total.

Brook, however, fell in the 17th over as Haris castled him to bring an end to his astonishing cameo that saw him scoring a magnificent 31 off just 19 balls including a boundary and three sixes.

Moeen, on the other hand, remained unbeaten with a terrific half-century and scored a quick 55 off a mere 23 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and as many sixes.

For Pakistan, Haris and Dahani bagged two wickets each, while Nawaz castled a batter.

Selectors suggest changes in national team’s middle order: Sources

KARACHI: The two selectors of the national selection committee suggested making changes in the national men’s cricket team’s middle order ahead of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022, sources claimed.

Two national selectors reportedly proposed making changes in the national contingent for the ongoing historic T20I series against England as a result of the middle order’s repeated failures.

The selectors recommended leaving out power hitter Khushdil Shah and adding veteran batters Shoaib Malik and Haris Sohail to the squad for the England T20Is.

The selectors also advised to include Shoaib and Haris in the squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia if the duo perform well in the ongoing England T20Is.

It is pertinent to mention that England edged past Pakistan in the series opener in a rather convincing fashion by six wickets as the hosts’ middle-order failure barred them from posting a respectable total and could finish at 158/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

According to the sources, the Covid-hit member will not accompany the team to the National Stadium for today’s match.

The member was immediately quarantined after his covid test came positive.

It is apropos to mention here that the national team are currently engaged in its first T20I series against England on home soil. England took a 1-0 lead in the seven-match series after they beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first T20I on Tuesday.

PCB to donate Rs13m gate money of first T20I to PM relief fund

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) raised PKR 13 millions from the gate money of the first T20I between Pakistan and England and will donate the raised amount to the PM Relief Fund to aid flood affectees in the country.

Following the heavy rainfalls and monsoon, the devastating flood wreaked havoc in the country as the one-third area of Pakistan had submerged and killed 1,191 people.

The PCB, as a result, announced to dedicate series opener of England’s historic T20I series and also to donate gate money of the first match to PM Relief Fund – set up to aid the affectees.

Pakistan players also donned specially-designed jerseys to show solidarity with flood victims which featured players’ names and jersey numbers quarterly submerged.

According to the latest development, PCB shared that PKR 13 millions have been raised from gate money of the series opener, which will be donated to PM Relief Fund.

Speaking on the occasion, the chairman PCB Ramiz Raja expressed gratitude to cricket fans for contributing in the great cause and asserted that cricket once again helped unite the entire nation.

“Cricket once again helped to unite the entire nation. We are grateful to all cricket fans for contributing to this great cause,” said Ramiz.

“The PCB stands with all flood victims,” Ramiz concluded.

The CEO of PCB Faisal Hasnain, on the other hand, termed it an ‘honour’ for PCB to make a contribution to the funds.

“Spectators in Karachi did their part to help those affected by the floods caused by the monsoon rains,” Faisal said.

“It is an honor for PCB to make a small contribution to the funds through the first T20 match,” he concluded.

Pakistan and their middle-order woes; a case to address

Consistent middle-order failures have now become a pertinent headache for the national team as after having a disastrous Asia Cup 2022, the Green Shirts could not recover from the same issue in the recently-concluded series opener of the historic home T20I series against England.

Pakistan’s middle-order failure is a case that needed to be addressed at the earliest as the biggest event of the year – ICC T20 World Cup 2022 – is nearing in and the national team, as of yet, could not find the combination.

In the first T20I against England, Pakistan tried a different middle-order compared to that of Asia Cup 2022 by recruiting Haider Ali at number three, Shan Masood at four, and Iftikhar Ahmed at five.

But, the change in the batting combination failed to address the issue, the national team has been going through for a long time now.

Khushdil Shah who is a part of the national team as a finisher came to bat at number seven but he, too, failed to live up to his playing role and slog the ball big in the death overs.

Pakistan’s opening pair of captain Babar Azam and top-ranked T20I batter Mohammad Rizwan gave the hosts a flying start in the first T20I after facing a lot of criticism for their slow approach and strike rate.

Pakistan, as a result, were 104/1 in the first 12 overs, but in the last eight overs, six wickets fell and only 54 runs were scored courtesy of yet another failure of the middle-order.

Khushdil, who is in the team for power-hitting, somehow makes his way into the playing XI every time despite continuous failures, and could score a mere five runs off seven deliveries with a paltry strike rate of less than a hundred.

But this is not the first time, if you look at the last 10 innings of Khushdil, it does not include a single big knock against top-ranked sides, nor could he score a fifty in his T20 career.

Now the question is, how long will Khushdil continue to get opportunities? How does he get into the team? Are power hitters like that? We have a bunch of power hitters but none comes in handy when needed.

Asif Ali and Iftikhar, on the other hand, are also part of Pakistan’s middle order but their performances also lack consistency.

Combining all of these elements, it is safe to say that Pakistan are in a dire need of addressing their middle-order failures by making a dependable combination ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.
