ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistan to hold training session tomorrow for India clash

AHMEDABAD: Pakistan Men’s cricket team is set to undergo a two-day training session, commencing tomorrow in Ahmedabad ahead of the high-octane ICC World Cup 2023 clash against India on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

According to the details, Pakistan’s World Cup-bound contingent will engage in a rigorous practice session from 6 PM to 9 PM local time on Thursday (tomorrow) after reaching Ahmedabad today via chartered flight.

They will continue their training on Friday from 2 PM to 5 PM and will partake in several batting, bowling and fielding drills to boast their preparations for the most anticipated clash of the ICC World Cup 2023.

The Green Shirts scripted a decent start to their World Cup campaign with a resounding 81-run victory over the Netherlands on Friday at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, in their second match against Sri Lanka yesterday, Pakistan pulled off the highest run chase in the history of the World Cup, courtesy of gutsy centuries by Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan.

Pakistan, however, had a contrasting start to the pursuit as they had slipped to 37/2 in the eighth over as opening batter Imam-ul-Haq (12) and captain Babar Azam (10) failed to score big.

Following the slump, Mohammad Rizwan joined Abdullah Shafique in the middle and the pair launched an astounding recovery.

They batted sensibly over the course of their marathon partnership which saw them adding 176 runs to the total with Abdullah scoring his maiden ODI century.

Abdullah was dismissed after scoring 113 in 103 deliveries, laced up with 10 boundaries and three sixes.

Mohammad Rizwan then took the reigns of Pakistan run chase and he stitched a crucial 95-run partnership with Saud Shakeel, who scored a 30-ball 31 before perishing in the 45th over.

Rizwan held his ground firm and hit the winning runs for Pakistan in the penultimate over after notable support from Iftikhar Ahmed, who remained unbeaten on 22 in just 10 balls.

Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan in their second ICC World Cup 2023 fixture with an unbeaten 131 in 121 deliveries, smashing eight boundaries and three sixes.

ICC World Cup 2023: Pakistan squad partakes in training session ahead of Sri Lanka clash

HYDERABAD: Pakistan Men’s cricket team is undergoing a training session today at the Gymkhana ground in Hyderabad ahead of their ICC World Cup 2023 clash against Sri Lanka on October 10 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, Muhammad Wasim Jr., Haris Rauf, Saud Shakeel, as well as reserve players Muhammad Haris, Zaman Khan and Abrar Ahmed are undergoing training drills.

The Green Shirts scripted a decent start to their campaign with a resounding 81-run victory over the Netherlands on Friday at the same venue.

A combined bowling effort after Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel’s anchoring half-centuries propelled Pakistan to taste their maiden success in the mega event.

Set to chase 287, the Netherlands could score 205 despite Bas de Leede and Vikramjit Singh’s half-centuries.

Singh scored 52 off 67 deliveries, laced with four boundaries and a six while de Leede top-scored for the Dutch with a 68-ball 67 which included six boundaries and two sixes.

Besides them, Logan van Beek offered some resistance with his unbeaten 28-run cameo.

Haris Rauf was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with 3/43, followed by Hasan Ali with 2/33 while Shaheen Shah Afridi, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz struck out a batter each.

Put into bat first, Pakistan could register a below-par total of 286 runs on the board despite anchoring half-centuries.

Pakistan got off to a dismal start as they lost their top three Fakhar Zaman (12), Imam-ul-Haq (15) and Babar Azam (5) with just 38 runs on the board in 9.1 overs.

Following the slump, wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan was joined by young Saud Shakeel at the crease and the pair launched an astounding recovery.

Saud scored a brisk 68 in 52 deliveries, laced with nine boundaries and a six while Rizwan scored 75-ball 68, hitting eight boundaries.

All-rounders Shadab Khan (32) and Mohammad Nawaz (39) then put together a crucial partnership for the seventh wicket and added 64 runs to the total.

Mickey Arthur has inside knowledge of ‘dangerous’ Sri Lanka

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur shares that he knows Sri Lanka’s “strengths and weaknesses” inside out having spent two years at the helm of his Asian rivals.

Former champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka will clash at the ICC World Cup 2023 in Hyderabad on Tuesday, allowing Arthur the opportunity to renew his acquaintance with players he helped develop as coach between December 2019 to November 2021.

“Yeah, I know their strengths and weaknesses so we will have plans put in place for all of them,” Mickey Arthur told AFP.

“They are a dangerous side so we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

Pakistan defeated the Netherlands in a nervy performance by 81 runs in Hyderabad on Friday to open their World Cup campaign.

They overcame a top-order failure, recovering from 38-3 before posting a challenging 286 with half-centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan.

They then bowled out the Netherlands for 205 in 41 overs.

“I enjoyed the first win even though it wasn’t a great performance,” admitted Arthur.

“But we did enough to win and when the game was on the line we had players standing up.”

Pakistan are likely to keep the same line-up for Tuesday’s match, handing a lifeline to out-of-form opener Fakhar Zaman who scored just 12 against the Netherlands.

“I am not worried about his form, he is a good player and is just one innings away from a big score,” said Mickey Arthur of the only Pakistan batsman to have made a double century in ODI cricket.

Undone by South Africa’s record-shattering 428-5 in their opening game at ICC World Cup 2023 on Saturday in New Delhi before losing by 102 runs, 1996 champions Sri Lanka will take confidence from their battling reply.

Sri Lanka will also be buoyed by their two-wicket win against Pakistan last month that propelled them to the Asia Cup final in Colombo.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka admitted his side has been hampered by the loss of three frontline bowlers.

Dushmantha Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga were ruled out of the tournament completely through injury while Maheesh Theekshana remains with the squad but sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“It was tough to manage things without three key bowlers, but that is part of the game,” said Shanaka after the South Africa match.

“I am happy with the positive intent we showed with the bat and the first ten overs with the ball were good too.”

Kusal Mendis hit a whirlwind 42-ball 76, with eight glorious sixes, while Charith Asalanka (79) and Shanaka (68) frustrated the South African attack before Sri Lanka were dismissed for 326 in 44.5 overs.

Sri Lanka set up Asia Cup 2023 final with India as Pakistan crash out

COLOMBO: Charith Asalanka displayed nerves of steel after Kusal Mendis’ 91 to power Sri Lanka into the Asia Cup 2023 final with a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan.

Chasing a revised target of 252 in the reduced 42 overs, Sri Lanka needed to chase eight runs off Zaman Khan, bowling the final over, and amassed the total when Charith Asalanka chipped one down to the square leg on the final delivery.

Sri Lanka had a shaky start to the run chase as Kusal Perera fell for an eight-ball 17, courtesy of Shadab Khan’s direct hit.

Coming out to bat at number three, Kusal Mendis joined Pathum Nissanka (29) and they added a valuable 57-run partnership for the second wicket until Shadab Khan got the opener caught and bowled.

Sri Lanka were 77/2 in 13.2 overs when Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama put together a 100-run stand to put their side in complete command.

Samarawickrama, however, fell just two short of his well-deserved half-century as he scored a 51-ball 48, hitting four boundaries.

Joining set batter Kusal Mendis in the middle, Charith Asalanka made sure to keep Sri Lanka in momentum as he knitted an anchoring 33-run partnership.

Mendis, however, was outclassed by Iftikhar Ahmed as he fell for a gutsy 91 off 87 deliveries, which featured eight boundaries and a six.

His dismissal glimmered a ray of hope for Pakistan as their bowlers scripted their comeback by picking up late wickets.

Meanwhile, Asalanka, standing his ground firm denied Pakistan to snatch the victory as he scored the winning runs for Sri Lanka on the final delivery.

He scored an unbeaten 49 off 47 balls, hitting three boundaries and a six.

Iftikhar Ahmed led the bowling attack for Pakistan with three wickets, followed by Shaheen Shah Afridi, bagging two while Shadab Khan made one scalp.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan raised a commendable total of 252/7 after the all-important Asia Cup 2023 fixture was reduced to 42 overs a side due to rain interruption.

The hosts once again got off to a shaky start to their innings as their out-of-form opener Fakhar Zaman (4) failed to score big and was castled by Pramod Madushan in the fourth over with just nine runs on the board.

Following the early dismissal, Pakistan captain Babar Azam joined Abdullah Shafique at the crease and the pair knitted an anchoring 64-run partnership.

The duo of Babar and Abdullah had put Pakistan in a strong position before Dunith Wellalage got Babar stumped to mark Sri Lanka’s comeback.

Babar scored 29 off 35 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Pakistan’s mainstay with the bat Abdullah Shafique soon followed his captain back to the pavilion after Matheesha Pathirana stunned him with a short delivery soon after he amassed his maiden half-century.

Abdullah Shafique smashed three boundaries and two sixes on his way to a 69-ball 52.

Pakistan found themselves in a state of bother as they lost two more wickets in quick succession.

Consequently, the Babar-led side slipped to 130/5 in 27.4 overs as returning Mohammad Haris (3) and Mohammad Nawaz (12) perished cheaply.

With the hosts in heaps of trouble in their must-win Asia Cup 2023 match, wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan joined forces with Iftikhar Ahmed and launched an astounding recovery.

Rizwan and Iftikhar turned the game on its head with a brisk 108-run partnership for the sixth wicket which ended when the latter perished in the penultimate over.

Iftikhar fell just three short of his half-century, scoring 47 off just 40 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Mohammad Rizwan, however, carried his bat all the way through and top-scored for Pakistan with an unbeaten 86-run knock from 73 deliveries, laced up with six boundaries and two sixes.

Matheesha Pathirana led the bowling attack for Sri Lanka in an all-important Asia Cup 2023 fixture with 3/65 in his eight overs, followed by Pramod Madushan’s 2/58.

Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage made one scalp each.
