Former England cricketer heaps high praise on emerging pacer Ali Raza

Former England pacer and commentator Dominic Cork has praised Pakistan’s emerging pacer Ali Raza after his impressive performance against Multan Sultans in the PSL 10.

After posting an imposing 227-run total, Zalmi’s bowling unit came out with relentless intent and ensured there was no room for a comeback from the Sultans.

The chase began shakily for Multan Sultans, who lost their skipper Mohammad Rizwan (15) in the fourth over with only 27 runs on the board. Despite a brief 36-run stand between Usman Khan and Shai Hope, the resistance was short-lived.

Arif Yaqoob removed Hope (20) in the seventh over, opening the floodgates for a collapse that saw Multan Sultans lose their remaining eight wickets for just 44 runs.

Usman was the only batter to offer any real fight, scoring a 22-ball 44 laced with four fours and three sixes, but it wasn’t enough to rescue the innings.

Young pacer Ali Raza was the pick of the bowlers for Peshawar Zalmi, grabbing 4/21 in his four overs. Arif Yaqoob showed his brilliance by grabbing three wickets, while Mitchell Owen chipped in with two.

This commanding result eclipsed the previous best margin of victory Peshawar Zalmi, which was a 76-run win over Quetta Gladiators last season.

While speaking during the PSL 10 match, Cork emphasized on Ali’s potential, stressing the need for smarter management with the young bowler.

“Ali Raza is a real talent – look after him. Focus on core strength and stability, ” he said.

“It’s not just about lifting heavy but managing it smartly. Nurture him. We’ve seen pacers like Ihsanullah shine and then struggle post-injury. Don’t repeat that,” Cork added.

It is worth mentioning that West Indies’ legendary cricketer and renowned commentator Ian Bishop has lauded Ali Raza’s abilities on several occasions.

Ian Bishop took to Twitter to express his admiration for the exceptional skills of a young pacer following their impressive performances in the Under-19 and domestic tournaments.

The 17-year-old fast bowler, who debuted in first-class cricket last year, has started impressively, taking 32 wickets in just six matches.

PSL 10: Ali Raza takes four to help Peshawar Zalmi thump Multan Sultans

RAWALPINDI: Teenage pacer Ali Raza claimed four wickets after a dominant batting display to power Peshawar Zalmi to a thumping 120-run victory against Multan Sultans during the ninth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here on Saturday.

Chasing a mammoth 228, Multan Sultans crumbled under pressure as Peshawar Zalmi bowled them out for just 107, sealing their biggest-ever win in terms of runs.

The Sultans never looked settled in the chase, losing skipper Mohammad Rizwan in the fourth over for 15, with just 27 on the board.

Shai Hope (20) and Usman Khan tried to stabilise the innings, adding 36 runs for the second wicket, but Hope’s dismissal in the seventh over, courtesy of Arif Yaqoob, opened the floodgates.

The remaining eight wickets fell for just 44 runs as Zalmi’s bowlers ran riot, dismantling the Sultans’ middle and lower order with relentless accuracy.

Usman Khan was the lone warrior for his side, scoring a fighting 44 off 22 balls, decorated with four boundaries and three sixes, but he received no support from the other end.

Zalmi’s bowling unit was clinical, with Ali Raza leading the charge with a fiery spell, returning with figures of 4 for 21. Arif Yaqoob showed his brilliance by grabbing three wickets, while Mitchell Owen chipped in with two.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi’s decision to bat first looked shaky early on as they lost both openers, Saim Ayub and Babar Azam, for just 2 runs each within the first 13 balls, slipping to 5 for 2 in 2.1 overs.

However, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Mohammad Haris sparked a dramatic recovery, counterattacking with flair in a blistering 79-run stand off just 31 balls for the third wicket.

Haris led the charge with an explosive 45 off 21, hammering four fours and three sixes, before falling to Ubaid Shah in the eighth over.

Kohler-Cadmore then kept the scoreboard ticking alongside Hussain Talat, adding another 53 runs for the fourth wicket.

The English batter scored 52 in just 30 balls, laced with two boundaries and five towering sixes, before being dismissed by Michael Bracewell in the 14th over with the score at 137.

Talat, who chipped in with a handy 37 off 29, was sent back in the very next over by Iftikhar Ahmed, leaving Zalmi in need of a late surge.

That’s exactly what they got, thanks to a blazing partnership between Mitchell Owen and Abdul Samad. The pair added a staggering 73 runs in just 25 balls, propelling the total beyond the 200-run mark.

Owen smashed 34 off 15 with one four and four sixes before being dismissed by David Willey in the penultimate over, while Samad’s fireworks yielded 40 off just 14, including four fours and three sixes, before he fell in the final over.

For Multan Sultans, Ubaid Shah, Bracewell, and Willey bagged two wickets each, while Iftikhar Ahmed chipped in with one.

Inzamam-ul-Haq shares what Babar Azam needs to turn things around

Peshawar Zalmi’s head coach, Inzamam-ul-Haq, has recently discussed the struggles of star batter Babar Azam and shared insights on what he needs to do to improve.

In a recent interview, the legendary batter emphasised the importance of patience and smart shot selection for Babar, suggesting that the key to finishing more matches lies in targeting the right bowlers at the right time.

“Babar, you already have all the cricket shots,” Inzamam said while speaking to Zalmi media. “But to win more matches, you need to wait for the right bowler and the right moment. Don’t try to hit every ball – be patient and smart.”

The former captain highlighted the mental side of modern cricket and how decision-making under pressure plays a decisive role, especially for top-order batters like Babar Azam.

Inzamam illuminated the secrets behind Zalmi’s success in the PSL throughout the years, attributing their impressive performance to a vibrant internal culture that fuels their ambitions and teamwork.

“We play like a family chasing a big target,” he said. “When we face tough times, we don’t give up. We stay united and fight together. That’s how we turn losses into wins.”

Babar Azam, once regarded as a benchmark for emerging batters in Pakistan, is currently under a cloud of scrutiny due to a stark decline in his batting performance.

Since his impressive score of 151 against Nepal in August 2023, Babar has not managed to score a single century across any format in international cricket.

His struggles have been particularly pronounced in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10, where his batting woes have been hard to ignore.

The tournament commenced with a dramatic low, as he registered a duck against the Quetta Gladiators, followed by a mere single run in a subsequent clash against Islamabad United.

Quetta Gladiators overpower Peshawar Zalmi to kick off PSL 10

RAWALPINDI: Saud Shakeel’s half-century and Abrar Ahmed’s four-wicket haul steered Quetta Gladiators past Peshawar Zalmi in the second match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

In their pursuit of a daunting target of 217 runs, Peshawar Zalmi, captained by Babar Azam, was bowled out for just 136, resulting in an 80-run defeat.

Peshawar Zalmi had a rough start, losing their captain Babar Azam for a duck with only three runs on the board, as he was dismissed by Mohammad Amir in the very first over.

Saim Ayub, returning to competitive cricket after an injury, put up a valiant effort, scoring a fifty off 37 balls, but struggled to find stable partners.

The left-handed batsman hit four sixes and three fours during his innings. Hussain Talat added a quick 35 runs off 19 balls, including three sixes.

For the Quetta Gladiators, Abrar Ahmed was the standout performer, taking four wickets for 42 runs in his four overs, while both Mohammad Amir and Usman Tariq claimed two wickets each.

Abrar Ahmed was awarded Player of the Match for his remarkable performance.

Earlier, Finn Allen and Saud Shakeel struck half-centuries to power Quetta Gladiators to 216-3 against Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam invited Quetta Gladiators to bat first after winning the toss, however, the decision backfired, courtesy of Allen and Shakeel’s brilliant strokeplay.

The opening pair smashed 88 runs in 6.5 overs before Sufiyan Muqeem broke the partnership with the prized wicket of Allen, who scored 53 runs from 25 balls, with the help of five boundaries and four sixes.

Ihsanullah made a name for himself in the cricket world by taking 22 wickets for Multan Sultans during the 2023 season of the Pakistan Super League.

He debuted in T20 internationals for Pakistan in March 2023. Unfortunately, he faced an elbow injury during his ODI debut against New Zealand in April 2023, which kept him out of the game.

Ihsanullah made his return to competitive cricket in 2024 during the Champions T20 Cup, but Multan Sultans did not select him during the PSL 10 draft earlier this year.

The 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League is set to begin today (April 11) with an exciting opening ceremony at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The tournament opener will feature defending champions Islamabad United going up against two-time champions Lahore Qalandars.

Star opener Saim Ayub and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris have officially joined the Peshawar Zalmi squad in Rawalpindi ahead of the much-anticipated Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10, which kicks off on April 11.

In a video released by the franchise, Haris was seen driving Ayub to the team hotel, where the duo arrived in high spirits and greeted fans in Pashto, reflecting the Zalmi culture and fanbase connection.

The arrival of the explosive left-hander comes just a day after he was declared fit to feature in PSL 10, marking the end of his rehabilitation from an ankle injury that had kept him out of action for over six weeks.

Saim Ayub had sustained the injury during the Test series against South Africa earlier this year.

After being sidelined from the Champions Trophy and the white-ball tour of New Zealand, the 21-year-old underwent an intensive recovery programme in London before returning home to celebrate Eid with family.

His rehab included strengthening and balance-focused exercises such as single-leg squats, tightrope walks, and single-leg jumps — all aimed at regaining stability and match fitness.

Peshawar Zalmi pick explosive batter Mitchell Owen after Bosch withdraws from PSL 10

Peshawar Zalmi has picked explosive Australian batter Mitchell Owen in the Supplementary category after Corbin Bosch withdrew from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

Owen made headlines after leading Hobart Hurricanes to their first Big Bash League (BBL) title. His joint-fastest century in the tournament’s history helped his team to overcome Sydney Thunder in the final.

The right-hand batter registered himself in the PSL draft but remained unpicked. Mitchell Owen has now been drafted to Zalmi in the Supplementary category.

“Supplementary draft pick. All-Rounder Mitchell Owen joins the Zalmi squad for [PSL 10],” the franchise announced in an Instagram post accompanied by an animated poster of the Australian batter.

His inclusion in the Zalmi squad comes a day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced serving a legal notice to South Africa all-rounder Corbin Bosch for breaching his PSL contract.
