Multan Sultans end Quetta Gladiators’ winning streak in PSL 9

MULTAN: Mohammad Rizwan and Reeza Hendricks’ half-centuries, followed by a combined bowling effort powered Multan Sultans to defeat Quetta Gladiators in the 11th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Multan Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

With this 13-run victory, Multan Sultans solidified their position at the top of the points table while handing Quetta Gladiators their first loss in PSL 9.

While chasing a mammoth 181, Quetta Gladiators had a slow start and lost Jason Roy in the third over with a mere 16 runs on the board.

Saud Shakeel played an entertaining 24-run knock from 13 balls, which featured four boundaries and one six before David Willey sent him back to the pavilion.

Skipper Rilee Rossouw joined Khawaja Nafay on the crease and powered Quetta Gladiators to make a comeback with a 62-run stand in just 38 balls.

Rossouw played a quick knock of 30 runs from 18 balls which included two sixes and a boundary but fell to Aftab Ibrahim as Khushdil Shah pouches a low catch.

This proved to be the turning point as Multan Sultans’ bowlers picked timely wickets to deny Quetta Gladiators’ comeback.

Quetta Gladiators opted to field first but could not get the desired start as Usman Khan smashed 14 runs from the first over of Akeal Hosein.

Abrar Ahmed ended Khan’s brief stay in the third over after the batter scored 14 off seven, which brought Hendricks out to join Rizwan at the crease.

The two experienced batters constructed an anchoring partnership of 79 runs from 62 balls to put the pressure on Quetta Gladiators, pushing the team’s total to 101 inside 14 overs.

Rizwan smashed four sixes and two boundaries on his way to 51 off 42 before he attempted to hit one to Hosein but the ball ballooned up and Saud Shakeel caught it safely at deep mid-wicket.

Hendricks, who was playing steadily until then, switched gears after Rizwan’s dismissal and knitted a quick 77-run partnership for the third wicket with Tayyab Tahir.

Hendricks top-scored for the Sultans with 72 runs from 47 balls with the help of 11 boundaries including four sixes.

Mir Hamza credits team effort for victory over Lahore Qalandars

LAHORE: Karachi Kings’ left-arm pace bowler Mir Hamza has attributed the team’s thrilling victory against Lahore Qalandars to the combined team effort.

Karachi Kings edged past Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 clash at Gaddafi Stadium yesterday courtesy of a clinical bowling performance and Kieron Pollard’s blistering half-century.

Mir Hamza, who took the winning single off the last ball, opened up during the post-match press conference about the plan before facing the final ball.

“It was a high-pressure situation but the plan was to not play a lofty shot and go for a ground shot,” said Hamza.

The 31-year-old pacer also commented on the atmosphere at Lahore Qalandar’s home ground, Gaddafi Stadium.

“It is Lahore’s home ground and the crowd was supporting them fully. I enjoyed playing against a full house and performing in such a high-intensity situation,” he expressed.

He also thanked the team management of Karachi Kings for entrusting him with his role as an attacking bowler.

“The management has given me the responsibility to attack, so I am bowling according to my role and trying my best to fulfil the team’s expectations,” he added.

LAHORE: Kieron Pollard’s blistering half-century helped Karachi Kings edge past Lahore Qalandars in a thrilling Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 clash at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Set to chase 176, Karachi Kings held on to their nerves to chase the total on the final ball with Mir Hamza taking the single to seal the deal.

However, they had a turbulent start to the chase as they lost early wickets and slipped to 44-4 in the power play.

Experienced batters Shoaib Malik and Pollard then joined hands to take Karachi Kings out of the trouble as they knitted a solid 95-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Pollard was the core aggressor of the partnership, smashing five sixes and a four on his way to a 33-ball knock of 58 runs before he miscued one to Shaheen Afridi which landed safely in the hands of Rassie van der Dussen.

Meanwhile, Malik played the anchor’s role with 39 off 32 with the help of three boundaries until he tried to shift gears but fell prey to Haris Rauf.

Lahore Qalandars attempted to force a comeback with timely wickets but Irfan Khan stayed firm keeping the scoreboard moving and took the match to the last over.

With 11 needed off the last over, Hasan Ali smashed the six off the first ball to release the pressure and rotated the strike to level the scores.

But he could not finish the game as he got out with scores levelled, bringing Hamza to the crease, who hit the winning shot.
