Wasim Akram questions Shadab Khan’s decision to bat in lower-order

Former captain Wasim Akram has raised questions over Shadab Khan’s decision to bat at number seven during Islamabad United’s match against Multan Sultans in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Akram, while speaking during The Pavillion, expressed disappointment over Islamabad United’s captain coming to bat in the lower order despite showing good form in the last match.

Shadab Khan came in to bat at number three during the opening PSL 9 game against Lahore Qalandars and led his team to victory with a blistering half-century.

However, in yesterday’s match, he came in to bat at number seven and scored a meagre 11 runs from nine balls before his team bundled out at 144.

“When you have a captain who is in form and scored 74 in 41 balls in the previous match, why didn’t he come in to bat at three or four?” Akram questioned.

“He [Shadab] said in the post-match press conference that the wicket was a bit difficult which is why I wanted to send in a proper batter.

“I hope that was a language barrier because if that’s the case it means that he will come out to bat early when the pitch is easy but send anyone else if that’s not the case.”

For the unversed, Multan Sultans defeated Islamabad United by five wickets courtesy of Reeza Hendricks’s second consecutive half-century.

Shahid Afridi believes ‘Haris Rauf needs honest help’ to regain form

Former captain Shahid Afridi has opened up about Lahore Qalandar’s pace bowler Haris Rauf, who is struggling with his bowling form during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Lahore Qalandars lost both of their matches in the PSL 9 and Rauf has given dismal performances in both games.

The express bowler conceded 38 runs without a wicket in three overs in the opening match against Islamabad United.

In the next match, he picked one wicket and gave away 47 runs in his four overs against Quetta Gladiators.

However, Shahid Afridi, believes that Rauf needs the right mentorship at the moment to regain his lost form.

“Right now, Haris Rauf seems to be struggling with his bowling, and I’m not quite understanding it,” said Afridi while talking to a local news channel.

“He needs honest help at this moment, the guidance of seniors is necessary because we shouldn’t sideline him completely,” he further added.

The former all-rounder also acknowledged Rauf’s potential and suggested that the pace bowler should play four-day cricket to improve as a bowler.

“He has given some fantastic performances for Pakistan. That boy will improve even more when he plays longer-format cricket,” said the former captain.

“When he plays four-day cricket, his bowling will automatically improve, but right now, he needs our support,” Shahid Afridi concluded.

Lahore Qalandars will next face Multan Sultans at Multan Cricket Stadium tomorrow.

Reeza Hendricks half-century guides Multan Sultans to ease past Islamabad United

MULTAN: Reeza Hendricks scored his second consecutive half-century to guide Multan Sultans to a five-wicket win over Islamabad United in the fifth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Multan Sultans, while chasing a meagre target of 145, lost Dawid Malan in the first over as Naseem Shah shattered his stumps.

However, captain Mohammad Rizwan and Reeza Hendricks’s 71-run stand ensured smooth progress for the home team until Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan spoiled the party.

Khan’s leg-break thuds onto Rizwan’s back-pad, prompting a huge appeal and the umpire giving that out.

The batter reviewed the decision, but to no avail and had to walk back after a responsible knock of 43 runs from 33 balls featuring six boundaries and two sixes.

Hendricks continued his good form and top-scored for the Sultans with his second half-century.

He struck seven boundaries including one six on his way to 58 off 46 to put his team in a comfortable position before Tymal Mills sent him back to the pavilion.

With run-a-ball required, Naseem Shah removed Khushdil Shah to force a late comeback for Islamabad United.

However, Iftikhar Ahmed and David Willey held on to their nerves, chasing the total on the penultimate ball.

Shah led the bowling charts for the United with figures of 2-27, while Imads Wasim, Mills and Khan managed one wicket each.

Earlier, Multan Sultans opted to bowl first and struck early with two quick wickets, reducing Islamabad United to 14-2 in 3.4 overs.

Agha Salman and Jordan Cox then joined hands to help the visitors recover after early blows with a solid partnership of 68 runs from 48 balls.

Cox was the chief contributor to the partnership with a 28-ball 41, laced with two boundaries as many sixes before Usama Mir got him lbw while attempting a switch hit.

Salman remained unfazed at his end, while Azam Khan came and gone after scoring 13 off 10 with a boundary and six.

Abbas Afridi castled Imad Wasim in the next over to further slip the United to 105-5 in 14 overs before captain Shadab Khan joined Salman.

Khan and Salman raised a 35-run stand to push the team’s total to 140, however, Afridi dismissed both batters in a span of two deliveries to halt the recovery for the visitors.

Salman top-scored with an anchoring innings of 52 off 43, with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

Mohammad Ali bowled the last over which saw the final three wickets falling, with Naseem Shah getting run out on the last ball to finish Islamabad United’s innings at 144.

Afridi and Ali returned with bowling figures of 3-29 and 3-19 respectively, while Mir claimed two wickets.

“Not only Babar, we focus on every batter” says Tabraiz Shamsi

Karachi Kings’ left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi praised Peshawar Zalmi’s captain Babar Azam ahead of the two sides’ clash in the ongoing HBL PSL 9, however, he asserted that his team focuses on every player.

Karachi Kings failed to get the desired start to their HBL PSL 9 campaign, but Shamsi is hopeful that his side will leave the previous match behind and make a resounding comeback against Peshawar Zalmi tomorrow.

“The performance of previous seasons is now a thing of the past, even if you are a champion, you still have to start from zero,” said Tabraiz Shamsi while talking to the media ahead of Karachi Kings’ second match in the HBL PSL 9.

“We have a new management this season and the team environment is good. We are training hard and it will bore fruits in the next games.

Shamsi praised Babar Azam but also mentioned that Zalmi also have other good players and Karachi Kings are focusing on each one of them.

“Babar Azam is a special player who performs around the world at the highest stage, but he’s not the only batsman in the team.

“There’s not only a single player that we focus on. There are so many other good players in the team.

Shamsi also praised the quality of cricket in the PSL, saying, “It is a top-quality tournament. Pakistan always produces good fast bowlers and PSL is a good platform for young talented players to showcase their skills.”

Lastly, he expressed his excitement to play in front of the Lahore crowd in the upcoming match between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi.

“I have played one match for South Africa in Lahore but it was during the COVID-19 days. I am looking forward to entertaining the crowd of Lahore,” Shamsi concluded.

Nafay-inspired Gladiators stun holders Qalandars in high-scoring encounter

LAHORE: Khawaja Nafay scored an unbeaten half-century to spearhead Quetta Gladiators to a five-wicket victory over defending champions Lahore Qalandars in the fourth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here on Monday.

Set to chase 188, the Gladiators amassed the target on the first delivery of the final over when their star batter Nafay struck Zaman Khan for a boundary.

Earlier, the in-form opening pair of Saud Shakeel and Jason Roy once again gave the Gladiators a flying start, adding 69 runs for the first wicket in less than seven overs.

But both the openers fell in the span of just three deliveries, allowing the hosts to force a comeback.

Saud struck seven boundaries and a six on his way to a 23-ball 40 while Roy scored 24 off 19 deliveries.

Coming out to bat at No.3, Khawaja Nafay, knitted crucial stands with skipper Rilee Rossouw (18), Sarfaraz Ahmed (11) and Sherfane Rutherford (14), making sure that the Gladiators do not lose momentum by hitting boundaries at regular intervals.

But with Rutherford’s dismissal in the 17th over, the home side attempted to force a late comeback, bowling tight lengths and making it tough for the batters to score freely.

Nafay, however, displayed nerves of steel and batted sensibly to guide the 2019 champions over the line in the final over after a sensational partnership with Akeal Hosein, who scored an unbeaten run-a-ball nine.

Khawaja Nafay top-scored for the Gladiators with his maiden PSL half-century, scoring 60 not out off just 31 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and three sixes.

For the Qalandars, Shaheen, Haris Rauf, Sikandar Raza, Salman Fayyaz and Zaman Khan struck out a batter apiece.

Put into bat first, the Qalandars managed to register a formidable total of 187/7 on the board despite a dismal start.

The hosts suffered an early blow to their batting charge when Akeal Hosein dismissed Fakhar Zaman (6) on the first delivery of the third over with just nine runs on the board.

Rassie van der Dussen then joined forces with Farhan and launched recovery.

The duo put together an anchoring 53 runs for the second wicket before Abrar Ahmed brought an end to van der Dussen’s scratchy 15-run knock to end by cleaning him in the ninth over.

Farhan then knitted a one-sided partnership with Abdullah Shafique and brought up his second-consecutive PSL 9 half-century in the process.

He smashed six boundaries and three sixes on his way to a 43-ball 62 and finally walked back in the 13th over after falling victim to Mohammad Hasnain.

The Qalandars sustained another blow to their innings, just two balls later, when Hosein returned to provide another breakthrough to the Gladiators by getting Shafique (11) caught behind.

But Jahandad Khan took the reigns of Qalandars’ batting expedition and bolstered their total with a sensational knock which featured three boundaries and four sixes, three out of which came against Abrar in the 16th over.

He carried his bat all the way through with an unbeaten 45 off just 17 deliveries.

Besides him, Sikandar Raza (18) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (12) also made notable contributions at the death with brisk cameos.

Hasnain and Hosein bagged two wickets each for the Gladiators while Abrar, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Wasim Jr made one scalp each.

Team will do better in coming matches: Karachi Kings’ Assistant Coach Masroor

MULTAN: Karachi Kings’ Assistant Coach Muhammad Masroor expressed his hopes that the team will regroup and get on the winning track in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.

Masroor, while interacting with the media in the post-match press conference after the Kings’ 55-run defeat against home side Multan Sultans, shared that the side is in the rebuilding process and will deliver better performances in the upcoming matches.

“It was our first game. The pitch was really good [to bat on] and yet we curtail them below 200. We bowled well in patches but it’s a rebuilding team and hopefully, in the future, we would definitely do well,” said Masroor.

Masroor further highlighted that some of the key members of the Karachi Kings’ squad were tired due to excessive travelling but emphasized that the team would gel and perform better.

“[Players were] rusty, Pollard and Vince joined us yesterday. The team would gel with time and will perform well,” Masroor stated.

Muhammad Masroor further replied to a question regarding the Kings’ middle order and insisted that the team was on track to chase down the total until Shoaib Malik’s dismissal, terming it a turning point of the match.

“180 was chasable here, we scored valuable runs in patches, the way Malik was playing, he had acquired the momentum but when he got out, that’s where the game changed,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that Karachi Kings next face Peshawar Zalmi on Wednesday at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
