Multan Sultans sink Peshawar Zalmi to reach PSL 9 Final

KARACHI: A combined bowling effort, followed by Yasir Khan’s blistering half-century powered Multan Sultans to beat Peshawar Zalmi by seven wickets and qualify for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final.

Set to chase a modest 147, the Sultans amassed the total for the loss of just three wickets and nine balls to spare, courtesy of a solid knock by Yasir up the order.

The Sultans had a flying start to the pursuit as Yasir and Mohammad Rizwan notched up a brisk 61-run partnership.

Yasir was the core aggressor of the opening stand while Rizwan was anchoring through until he fell prey to Aamer Jamal in the eighth over.

Rizwan managed just 15 off 21 deliveries and could hit a single boundary.

Yasir then partnered with Usman Khan for a brief 23-run partnership before walking back to the dugout soon after completing his half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for the Sultans with a 37-ball 54 with the help of seven boundaries and a six.

Usman then took charge of the Sultans’ pursuit and he carried his bat all the way through with an unbeaten 36 off 28 deliveries to steer them to a comfortable victory.

He received notable support from Iftikhar Ahmed, who played a quickfire 22-run cameo. His eight-ball featured three boundaries and a six.

For Peshawar Zalmi, Aamer Jamal, Salman Irshad and Mehran Mumtaz could pick up a wicket apiece.

Opting to bat first, Zalmi only managed a subpar total on the board despite Babar Azam’s anchoring knock.

Zalmi had a dismal start to their innings as they lost their in-form opener Saim Ayub (1) in the first over with just four runs on the board.

Following the early debacle, Mohammad Haris joined Babar in the middle and put together an anchoring 46-run partnership for the second wicket before falling victim to Mohammad Ali in the sixth over.

Zalmi then sustained another blow to their batting charge when Usama Mir got rid of Haseebullah Khan (3) in the eighth over.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam stood his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking until Chris Jordan cleaned him up with a well-crafted yorker in the 14th over.

He remained the top-scorer for Peshawar Zalmi with 46 off 42 deliveries, laced up with five boundaries.

Following his departure, Tom Kohler-Cadmore (24) and Rovman Powell (12) made notable contributions before Paul Walter and Luke Wood offered late fireworks.

Walter (12) and Wood added an unbeaten 15 for the eighth wicket, lifting Zalmi to go past the 140-run mark.

Wood was the core aggressor of the stand with his brisk 14-run cameo which came off just seven deliveries and featured one boundary and a six.

Usama Mir, the leading wicket-taker of the PSL 9, and Chris Jordan led the bowling attack for Multan Sultans with two wickets each while David Wiley, Mohammad Ali and Abbas Afridi struck out a batter apiece.

Set to chase 186 against a challenging surface, the Gladiators’ batting unit unfolded on a meagre 106 and thus succumbed to a massive defeat ahead of their Eliminator clash against Islamabad United.

Openers Jason Roy (3) and Saud Shakeel failed to give Gladiators a strong start as the former fell prey to David Willey in the third over with 18 runs on the board.

Shakeel followed his opening partner’s footsteps and got run out in the same over. He scored 14 off nine deliveries, hitting two boundaries including a six.

The Gladiators then lost two more wickets — Rilee Rossouw (10) and Laurie Evans (1) in quick succession and consequently slipped to 47/4 in 6.1 overs.

Youngster Omair Bin Yousuf offered some resistance in the middle phase with a courageous knock until falling victim to Usama Mir in the 12th over.

Yousuf remained the top-scorer for the Gladiators with a 25-ball 37 with the help of three boundaries and two sixes.

Following his dismissal, the Sultans’ bowlers ran through the Gladiators’ batting tail to seal a resounding victory for the 2021 champions.

Put into bat first, the Sultans registered a formidable total on the board, courtesy of a collective effort from their batters.

The Sultans, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their opener Yasir Khan (12) in the third over with just 16 runs on the board.

Following the early blow, in-form Usman Khan joined Mohammad Rizwan in the middle and knitted an anchoring partnership.

Their second-wicket stand yielded 52 runs before Abrar Ahmed cleaned up Usman with a quicker delivery.

Usman managed 21 off 23 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Meanwhile, Rizwan stood his ground firm and partnered strongly with Johnson Charles to put Sultans in control.

They added 65 runs for the third wicket before Rizwan fell victim to Mohammad Amir in the 17th over.

He remained the top-scorer for the Sultans with a 47-ball 69 which featured one boundary and four sixes.

Later, Iftikhar Ahmed joined forces with set-batter Charles and bolstered the Sultans’ total with belligerent hitting.

The duo added a quickfire 46 runs to the tally before Charles finally perished in the final over.

He remained a notable run-getter for the Sultans with 53 off 29 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and three sixes.

Iftikhar, on the other hand, carried his bat all the way through with an unbeaten 20 off eight deliveries which included two boundaries and a six.

Mohammad Amir led the bowling charge for Quetta Gladiators with two wickets but was expensive while Abrar and Akeal Hosein and Mohammad Wasim Jr picked one each.

Shan Masood satisfied with Karachi Kings’ performance in PSL 9

KARACHI: Shan Masood, the captain of Karachi Kings, expressed satisfaction over his team’s performance in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

During the press conference after a thrilling match against Peshawar Zalmi, Masood stated that Karachi Kings played good cricket throughout the tournament.

“I am satisfied with the performance of Karachi Kings in this season. We lost two close games, which we could have won if we avoided small mistakes. But this is part of the game,” said the left-handed batter.

“Our team was hit with an unfortunate situation with 13 of our players falling ill in the middle of the tournament. It dented our plans as we had to make changes to our combination.

“Meanwhile, we also had to rely on other results, but they did not go in our favour.”

Talking about his own performance, Shan Masood expressed disappointment over his batting performance.

“I admit that I could not perform at my best this season. I have given performances in previous seasons of PSL and wanted to replicate them in this season, but unfortunately, it did not happen,” he remarked.

Karachi Kings lost their last group match against Peshawar Zalmi by a narrow two-run margin after a thrilling last over.

“The wicket was tricky and we made some small mistakes, while Peshawar Zalmi bowled well, resulting in their victory,” said Karachi Kings’ captain.

Masood also appreciated young spinner Arafat Minhas for his impressive performance against Peshawar Zalmi. Arafat claimed one wicket for 11 runs in his four overs.

“Arafat [Minhas] performed brilliantly, taking full advantage of the conditions. He came into the squad this year along with 6 other players who have never played in the PSL before.

“We gave chances to the youngsters according to the situation and made sure that they get the right mentorship from the senior players.”

Irfan’s blitz in vain as Peshawar Zalmi edge Karachi Kings in last-ball thriller

KARACHI: Muhammad Irfan Khan’s gutsy 31-run knock went in vain as Peshawar Zalmi registered a narrow two-run victory over Karachi Kings in the 29th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at National Bank Stadium on Monday.

The enthralling victory lifted Peshawar Zalmi to the top of the PSL 9 standings with 13 points in 10 matches, followed by Multan Sultans with 12 points, who are yet to play their final group-stage match.

Chasing 148, the home side managed 145/5 despite Tim Seifert’s anchoring 41 and Irfan’s blistering 39.

The Kings had a steady start to the pursuit as James Vince and Seifert notched up an anchoring 61-run stand.

The hosts were marching comfortably until Naveen-ul-Haq broke the partnership in the ninth over by dismissing Vince, who scored 21 off 27 deliveries.

Karachi Kings then lost two more wickets in quick succession as their skipper Shan Masood (0) and mainstay Seifert walked back in consecutive overs as Peshawar Zalmi struck back.

With the scoreboard reading 68/3 in 10.3 overs, Irfan joined experienced Shoaib Malik in the middle and attempted to anchor the run chase.

The pair added an important 49 runs before Naveen struck again to provide another important breakthrough to Peshawar Zalmi as he cleaned up Malik in the 18th over.

Malik scored a gritty 22 off 25 deliveries, hitting one boundary.

Kings then sustained another massive blow to their pursuit when Luke Wood outclassed Kieron Pollard (1) with a slower delivery in the next over.

But Irfan showed grit and smashed Wood for a boundary on the last delivery of the penultimate over as Kings then needed 17 off the final over.

All-rounder Anwar Ali brought them in touching distance by hitting back-to-back boundaries on the third and fourth delivery but only managed a single on the fifth.

Kings needed four off the last delivery with set batter Niazi on strike. Aamer Jamal held on to his nerves and bowled a perfect yorker to seal a thrilling victory for Zalmi.

Irfan Niazi scored 39 off 26 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries.

Naveen led the bowling attack for Peshawar Zalmi with 2/22 in his four overs, followed by Wood, Jamal and Ayub, who bagged one each.

Opting to bat first, Peshawar Zalmi managed an average total on the board despite a solid start to their innings.

Their in-form opening pair Babar Azam and Saim Ayub looked in control in the early phase of the innings and led Zalmi to 54 for no loss at the conclusion of the batting powerplay.

Shan Masood’s decision to bring Zahid Mahmood into the attack bore fruits as the leg-spinner struck in his first over to break the threatening partnership by dismissing Saim.

The left-handed opener scored a cautious 19 off 18 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam was joined briefly by Mohammad Haris and Haseebullah Khan as both the young batters had a short stay at the crease.

The skipper led Peshawar Zalmi’s batting charge from the front against a disciplined bowling attack of Karachi Kings and amassed his half-century with authority by smashing Mahmood for a boundary in the 14th over.

But he perished in the same over while attempting a quick double, courtesy of an exceptional fielding effort from Mahmood.

Babar remained the top-scorer for Zalmi with 51 off 46 deliveries, including an impressive tally of five fours and a six.

His dismissal halted the flow of runs for Zalmi, putting their batters under pressure.

Consequently, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, in a desperate attempt to hit big, fell for a scratchy nine off 14 deliveries, bringing Zalmi down to 113/5 in 16.5 overs.

Later, Rovman Powell’s swashbuckling cameo, which lasted in the final over, bolstered Zalmi to a decent total.

He smashed three boundaries on his way to an 18-ball 30.

For Karachi Kings, Hasan Ali, Arafat Minhas, Daniel Sams and Zahid Mahmood made one scalp each.
