Malik, Irfan power Karachi Kings to a thrilling victory over Lahore Qalandars

KARACHI: Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Irfan Khan displayed nerves of steel and guided Karachi Kings to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Lahore Qalandars in the 26th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here on Saturday.

The enthralling victory kept Karachi Kings in contention to make it to the playoffs as they moved just one point shy of Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United, sitting fourth and third place respectively.

Chasing 178 on a tricky National Bank Stadium surface, the home side knocked the winning runs when Shoaib Malik slashed Zaman Khan for a boundary on the final delivery.

The home side got off to a flying start to the pursuit, courtesy of a quickfire opening stand between James Vince and Tim Seifert, which yielded 59 runs.

The sensational stand lasted in the seventh over when Tayyab Abbas got Vince caught behind on 42. His 27-ball knock featured six boundaries and a six.

Karachi Kings’ skipper Shan Masood then joined Seifert and knitted an anchoring 40-run partnership before walking back in the 12th over.

Masood scored a 16-ball 24 with the help of three boundaries.

The Kings then lost two more wickets — Kieron Pollard (3) and Seifert (33) — in quick succession and consequently slipped to 113/4 in 14.2 overs.

But Irfan and Malik kept the hosts in the hunt with a sensible partnership which saw them adding 52 runs for the fifth wicket off just 25 deliveries until the former departed in the penultimate over after a match-defining knock.

Irfan scored a quickfire 35 off 16 deliveries, peppered with six boundaries.

But Malik hung on and brought his vast experience into play to guide Karachi Kings to a nerve-testing victory.

He scored an unbeaten 27 off 17 deliveries, hitting four boundaries.

Tayyab Abbas led the bowling charge for the Qalandars with 2/23 while Sikandar Raza, Zaman and Shaheen Shah Afridi struck out a batter each.

Put into bat first, the Qalandars, who are already out of the playoffs race, notched up a decent total on the board, courtesy of an anchoring second-wicket partnership.

The visitors, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost their opener Tahir Baig in the third over with just 16 runs on the board.

Following the early stutter, Fakhar joined Abdullah in the middle and they combined to launch an astounding recovery for the Qalandars.

The pair added 70 runs for the second wicket at a brisk rate.

Fakhar Zaman was the core aggressor of the stand and brought up his half-century in the process off just 32 deliveries.

The left-handed batter had an agonizing end to his brave knock as a direct hit from Muhammad Irfan Khan sent him packing in the 11th over.

He scored 54 off 35 deliveries with the help of five boundaries and two sixes.

Following Fakhar’s dismissal, Abdullah took charge of the Qalandars’ batting expedition and changed gears to bring up his half-century in 36 deliveries.

He put together a brief partnership with Shai Hope (9) before finally perishing in the 17th over.

Abdullah Shafique remained the top-scorer for the Qalandars with a 39-ball 55 which featured five boundaries and a six.

Later, Sikandar Raza and David Wiese bolstered Lahore Qalandars to a formidable total with a quickfire 46-run stand.

Raza scored 22 off 16 deliveries while Wiese smashed three sixes on his way to a nine-ball 24.

Zahid Mahmood led the bowling attack for Karachi Kings with two wickets while Blessing Muzarabani and Anwar Ali made one scalp each.

Quetta Gladiators’ star player leaves PSL 9 for ‘personal reasons’

Quetta Gladiators’ batter Sherfane Rutherford has left the squad, citing personal reasons and will not be available for the remaining group matches of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Rutherford did not participate in Quetta Gladiators’ clash against Peshawar Zalmi yesterday as he returned back home for unrevealed family reasons.

However, the left-handed batter will join the squad for the playoffs of PSL 9, if Quetta Gladiators qualify.

Sherfane Rutherford has scored 151 runs in six innings in the ongoing season at a healthy strike rate of 148.03, which includes an unbeaten 58-run knock in the last-ball win against Karachi Kings.

Quetta Gladiators suffered a heavy 76-run defeat against Peshawar Zalmi yesterday, courtesy of Babar Azam’s quickfire half-century, followed by a ruthless bowling effort.

Set to chase 197, the Gladiators’ batting unit unfolded on a meagre 120 despite a solid opening stand.

Their openers Saud Shakeel and Jason Roy came out all guns blazing, smashing the ball all around the ground until Mehran Mumtaz struck in the fifth over.

The youngster dismissed Saud, who scored a quickfire 24 off 12 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and two sixes.

His dismissal opened the floodgates and the Gladiators lost four more wickets in quick succession, losing half of their side with 76 runs on the board in 10.4 overs.

Akeal Hosein (14) and Omair Bin Yousuf (10) offered minor resilience with their 21-run partnership before both perished.

Later, Mohammad Amir (13) offered a brief fight with his short cameo before Khurram Shahzad dismissed Abrar to sweep off the tail.

Quetta Gladiators are currently sitting in the fourth position in the points table after two consecutive losses. They need to win one of their last two games to qualify for the playoffs.

They will next face Lahore Qalandars on March 10 and Multan Sultans on March 12.

Hosein’s hat-trick in vain as Zalmi crush Gladiators to seal playoffs berth

RAWALPINDI: Babar Azam’s quickfire half-century, followed by a ruthless bowling effort led Peshawar Zalmi to crush Quetta Gladiators by 76 runs in the 25th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Later, Mohammad Amir (13) offered a brief fight with his short cameo before Khurram Shahzad dismissed Abrar to sweep off the tail.

For Zalmi, Mehran Mumtaz, Saim Ayub, Luke Wood and Shahzad bagged two wickets each while Naveen-ul-Haq and Aamer Jamal took one apiece.

Put into bat first, Peshawar Zalmi registered a formidable total on the board, courtesy of Babar Azam’s half-century.

Openers Saim Ayub and Babar Azam once again provided Zalmi a decent start to the innings as the in-form duo notched up a quickfire 46-run stand which lasted with the former’s dismissal in the fourth over.

Ayub smashed one boundary and three sixes on his way to a 12-ball 30.

Mohammad Haris then partnered briefly with Babar for a 47-run partnership before a direct hit from Gladiators’ skipper Rilee Rossouw brought curtains on his knock in the eighth over. He scored 20 off 13 deliveries, hitting one boundary and a six.

Zalmi then lost another wicket when Haseebullah Khan (six) was cleaned up by Abrar Ahmed on the first delivery of the 10th over.

Their mainstay with the bat Babar Azam soon perished when he was trapped lbw by Akeal Hosein in the 13th over after scoring 53 off 30 deliveries, laced with nine boundaries and a six.

He was quickly followed by Tom Kohler Cadmore in the next over, who fell prey to Mohammad Hasnain after scoring a brisk 33. His 19-ball knock featured four boundaries and a six.

Akeal Hosein put Quetta Gladiators in control in the 16th over when he dismantled Peshawar Zalmi’s lower middle-order with a hat-trick, removing Aamer Jamal (5), Mehran Mumtaz (0) and Luke Wood (0).

Hosein’s hat-trick, the first of PSL 9, halted Peshawar Zalmi to a mammoth total but Rovman Powell gave it a late push with an undefeated 39-run partnership with Naveen-ul-Haq, who scored a sensible 10 off nine deliveries.

Powell struck four boundaries on his way to a 25-ball 28.

Akeal Hosein led the Gladiators’ bowling attack with 4/23 while Hasnain, Abrar and Sohail Khan picked one wicket apiece.

Quetta Gladiators’ Akeal Hosein bags first hat-trick of PSL 9

RAWALPINDI: Quetta Gladiators’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein on Thursday, wreaked havoc as he registered the first hat-trick of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 against Peshawar Zalmi.

The hat-trick came in the 16th over when Akeal Hosein dismissed Aamer Jamal (5), Mehran Mumtaz (0) and Luke Wood (0) on the successive deliveries.

Hosein bowled a slightly shortish delivery to Jamal wide of off-stump. The right-handed batter went for a wild slash but ended up edging it to Laurie Evans behind the stumps, who took the catch on the second attempt.

He then removed Mehran Mumtaz for a golden duck as the youngster dragged on a length delivery which nipped back after pitching just wide of off-stump.

Hosein then bowled at a probing length and a suffocating line just outside off, luring Luke Wood to poke at it and skipper Rilee Rossouw did the rest as he took a sharp catch at first slip.

Notably, Akeal Hosein is the sixth bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the history of the PSL.

His teammate Mohammad Amir was the first bowler to achieve the feat in the inaugural edition against Lahore Qalandars, followed by Junaid Khan and Imran Tahir for Multan Sultans in the 2018 edition.

Islamabad United’s Mohammad Sami picked up a hat-trick in the fourth season while the last hat-trick was registered by Multan Sultans’ Abbas Afridi in the previous edition against Quetta Gladiators.

It is worth mentioning here that Akeal Hosein’s hat-trick halted Peshawar Zalmi’s march towards a big total and reduced them to 196/8 in the allotted 20 overs despite Babar Azam’s quickfire half-century.

Aaqib Javed opens up about Lahore Qalandars’ struggles in PSL 9

KARACHI: Former pacer Aaqib Javed, the head coach of Lahore Qalandars, has opened up about his team’s struggles during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

The defending champions Lahore Qalandars suffered six consecutive losses in the PSL 9 and crashed out of the playoff race.

Javed, while talking to the media in Karachi, stated that the availability and injury issues of their players were the major factors behind the team’s dismal performance.

“We tried to create a balanced team, however, David Wiese’s injury, Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s as well as other players’ absence caused problems for the team,” said the former pacer.

“Rashid Khan has always been the best option for our team, but unfortunately he could not participate this season.”

Aaqib Javed also reflected on Lahore Qalandars’ approach in the remaining games against Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators.

“We lost some matches in the last minute. But now it is a matter of honour for our team to win the remaining matches,” he remarked.

He expressed hope that his team will turn things around in the match against arch-rivals Karachi Kings.

“Although we failed to defeat Karachi Kings for the past few games, they do not have a psychological advantage over us,” Aaqib Javed said.

“We have to play positive cricket and we can make a comeback,” he added.

He also praised Lahore Qalandars’ captain Shaheen Afridi, who completed 100 wickets in PSL during their match against Islamabad United.

“Shaheen [Afridi] has crossed the milestone of 100 wickets in PSL. It is a matter of honour for our team.”

‘We were 10 runs short’ Mir Hamza on Karachi Kings’ defeat against Islamabad United

RAWALPINDI: Karachi Kings’ fast bowler Mir Hamza has opened up about the reason for his team’s narrow loss against Islamabad United in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

During the post-match press conference, Hamza expressed that Karachi Kings could have won the match against Islamabad United if they had some more runs on the board.

“I think we were 10-15 runs short, otherwise, the result would have been different as batters would have been under pressure while chasing,” he added.

He also shed light on the pitch conditions of the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, which is behaving differently than last year.

“Pindi pitch is behaving differently this time. We expected high-scoring encounters here like last year, where 200-220 runs were being chased. However, the pitch has moisture and is supportive to bowlers.”

Hamza also stated that his team is currently focused on winning the next two games and qualifying for the playoffs of PSL 9.

“We are not thinking about other teams at the moment. Our next target is to win our remaining matches,” said the left-arm pacer.

Upon being asked about skipper Shan Masood’s aggressive behaviour on the field, Hamza backed his captain and called it part of the game.

“Aggression is part of the game. In a crucial stage of a must-win game, things can heat up but it is the beauty of cricket. Even I was aggressive in the latter stages of the match today,” Mir Hamza remarked.

“Shan [Masood] is naturally a cool and calm person, but a captain needs to be aggressive on the field.”

Karachi Kings will next face arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars on 9th March.

All-round Islamabad United edge Karachi Kings to boost playoffs hopes

RAWALPINDI: A combined bowling and batting performance led Islamabad United to an important five-wicket victory over Karachi Kings in the 24th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 here at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Set to chase 151, Islamabad United amassed the total for the loss of five wickets and eight balls to spare.

Colin Munro (9) and Alex Hales (18) gave the United a brief flying start before both fell victim to Mir Hamza inside the batting powerplay with 39 runs on the board.

Following early blows, Shadab Khan joined Salman Ali Agha and anchored the run chase with a gritty partnership.

The duo added 58 runs amid their third wicket stand before Blessing Muzarabani got Agha caught behind in the 13th over. He scored 33 off 30 deliveries, laced up with one boundary and a six.

Meanwhile, Shadab Khan stood his ground firm and put together a brief partnership with Azam Khan (9) before both perished in the span of six deliveries as the United slipped to 115/5 in 15.1 overs.

Shadab remained the top-scorer for the United with a 26-ball 34 which featured four boundaries.

Following his dismissal, Haider Ali took the reigns of United’s pursuit and steered his side over the line in the penultimate over with an unbeaten 36-run partnership with Faheem Ashraf, who scored 12 not out.

Haider smashed two boundaries and a six on his way to an unbeaten 26 off 16 deliveries.

Mir Hamza led the bowling attack for Karachi Kings with 3/41 while Muzarabani and Mahmmod took one apiece.

Put into bat first, Karachi Kings registered 150/7 in the allotted 20 overs at the back of a sensible knock by Pollard.

The visitors had a shaky start to their innings as Faheem Ashraf dismissed their captain Shan Masood in the fifth over with 34 runs on the board.

Masood managed 10 off 12 deliveries and hit one boundary.

Faheem struck again in the next over and further dented Karachi Kings’ start as they slipped to 43/2 in 6.4 overs.

Karachi Kings then sustained two more blows to their batting expedition as they lost experienced Shoaib Malik (1) and Mohammad Nawaz (5) inside nine overs with just 49 runs on the board.

Following the debacle, Pollard joined James Vince in the middle and launched an astounding recovery.

The duo batted sensibly and added 58 runs at a brisk rate amid their fifth-wicket partnership, which lasted with Vince’s dismissal in the 14th over.

The Englishman scored an anchoring 29 off 27 deliveries with the help of five boundaries.

Pollard then partnered briefly with Muhammad Irfan Khan before finally perishing in the 18th over.

He remained the top-scorer for Karachi Kings with a sensational 39 off 28 deliveries, hitting three boundaries and as many sixes in the process.

Irfan followed his footsteps in the next over after a cautious 16. His 13-ball innings featured one boundary and a six.
