Sachin Tendulkar hails ‘inspirational’ James Anderson after farewell Test

Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar said on Friday that the legendary pacer James Anderson had “inspired generations” after the England great bowed out of international cricket.

Anderson brought the curtain down on an England career spanning two decades as the hosts hammered the West Indies by an innings and 114 runs inside three days to win the first Test at Lord’s.

By taking a typically miserly 3-32 in 16 overs, veteran paceman Anderson, 42 later this month, took his final tally of Test wickets to 704 in 188 matches.

No other paceman has been as successful in Test cricket, with only spinners Shane Warne (708 wickets) and Muttiah Muralitharan (800) ahead of Anderson in the all-time standings.

Sachin Tendulkar, the only man to have played more Tests than James Anderson with 200 appearances in the five-day game, paid tribute to the Lancashire swing bowler on X, formerly Twitter, by saying: “You’ve bowled the fans over with that incredible 22-year spell.

“Here’s a little wish as you bid goodbye. It has been a joy to watch you bowl — with that action, speed, accuracy, swing and fitness. You’ve inspired generations with your game.”

The 51-year-old Tendulkar, who retired from Test cricket in 2013 with a record 15,921 runs, added: “Wish you a wonderful life ahead with good health and happiness as you put those new shoes on for the most important spell of your life — the time with family.”

Retiring James Anderson picks best batter he bowled against

LONDON: Retiring England pacer James Anderson picked India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar as the best batter he bowled in his glittering career.

During a Q&A session with Sky Sports Cricket ahead of his farewell Test at the Home of Cricket Lord’s, Anderson picked legendary Tendulkar ahead of renowned batters like Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, David Warner and Steve Smith.

“The best batter I would have to say is Sachin Tendulkar,” said Anderson.

Notably, James Anderson dismissed Sachin Tendulkar nine times in Test cricket and thrice in ODIs. All in all, he has 149 wickets to his name against India in 39 matches, the most by him against any cricket-playing nation.

When probed about the best bowlers he ever faced, Anderson picked Australia’s Glenn McGrath and South Africa’s Dale Steyn, terming them world-class.

“The best bowler I faced was probably Glenn McGrath or Dale Steyn. Hard to pick between the two. Slightly different bowlers, but both world-class,” Anderson stated.

Anderson then chose Michael Clarke’s dismissal in the 2013 Ashes as his most memorable while opted his 81-run knock against India at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in 2014.

“Career achievement I am most proud of his getting 81 at Trent Bridge against India. I know, I probably should pick a wicket or bowling performance, but getting 81 with the bat, I think, it is just something I still can’t believe I have done,” stated Anderson.

For the unversed, England’s veteran pacer James Anderson announced in March that he will retire from Test cricket this summer.

“Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test” stated Anderson.

Anderson is the only pacer in history to take 700 Test wickets. He achieved the milestone during England’s fifth away Test against India, in March this year.

He is also the third in the list of players with the most Test wickets, only behind spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800 wickets) of Sri Lanka and the late Shane Warne (708 wickets) of Australia.

Soumya Sarkar shatters Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record

Bangladesh batter Soumya Sarkar on Wednesday broke India legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record of the highest ODI score in New Zealand during the second fixture at Nelson’s Saxton Oval.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 163 not out against New Zealand in 2009 at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval was the highest individual ODI score by a sub-continent batter in the country.

Soumya Sarkar surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record by scoring 169 off 151 balls with 22 boundaries and two maximums to his name.

Moreover, his 169-run knock was also the highest score by a Bangladesh men’s player away from home in an ODI and the highest in ODIs.

However, his effort went in vain as New Zealand comfortably thumped Bangladesh by seven wickets.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh could put on an average total of 291 on the board despite Soumya Sarkar’s gritty knock.

The touring side, after having a dismal start, lost wickets at regular intervals.

Sarkar put together brief partnerships with Anamul Haque (2), Najmul Hossain Shanto (6), Litton Das (6) and Towhid Hridoy (12) before getting subtle support at the other end in the form of Mushfiqur Rahim.

The pair added 91 runs for the fifth wicket before Jacob Duffy got Rahim caught behind in the 35th over to break the threatening partnership.

Mushfiqur Rahim remained a notable run-getter for Bangladesh with a cautious 45. His 57-ball knock featured five boundaries.

Meanwhile, Soumya Sarkar continued to keep the scoreboard ticking singlehandedly while Bangladesh kept losing wickets.

He scored more than half of Bangladesh’s total before finally returning to the dugout in the final over.

He smashed 22 boundaries and two sixes on his way to a 151-ball 169.

William O’Rourke and Duffy were the pick of the bowlers for New Zealand, picking up three wickets each while Josh Clarkson, Adam Milne and Adithya Ashok had a wicket apiece to their names.

In response, New Zealand comfortably amassed the target with 22 balls to spare, courtesy of a combined effort from their top order.

Openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra gave the hosts a commanding start with a brisk 76-run partnership.

Ravindra, who was the core aggressor of the opening stand, walked back in the 11th over after scoring a brisk 45 in 33 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and a six.

Young was then joined by Henry Nicholls and the duo partnered strongly to put New Zealand in further control as they added 128 runs for the second wicket.

The right-handed batter fell just 11 runs shy of his well-deserved century when he spooned Hasan Mahmud an easy caught and bowled dismissal.

He conceded 94 deliveries amid his outstanding knock and hit eight boundaries and two sixes.

Henry Nicholls tasted the same fortune as he too, fell agonisingly short of a century.

He became the victim of Shoriful Islam in the 41st over, just five away from the milestone when New Zealand needed a mere 32.

Henry Nicholls remained the top-scorer for New Zealand with an anchoring 95 in 99 deliveries, laced up with eight boundaries and a six.

Skipper Tom Latham (34) and Tom Blundell (24) made sure there were no further hiccups and steered New Zealand to glory at the back of their unbeaten 36-run partnership.

Hasan Mahmud led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 2/57 while Islam could pick up a wicket.

The seven-wicket victory in the second ODI powered New Zealand to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series over Bangladesh.

The third ODI of the series will take place on December 23 in Napier.

Virat Kohli equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most ODI centuries

KOLKATA: India’s batting maestro Virat Kohli on his 35th birthday equalled legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record of most ODI centuries in the ICC World Cup 2023 fixture against South Africa.

Kohli conceded 119 deliveries to reach the record-equalling hundred, getting to the landmark in the 49th over of India’s innings by working Kagiso Rabada’s length delivery to cover for a single at the iconic Eden Gardens.

India’s batting great Tendulkar took 451 innings to score his 49th ton while Virat Kohli achieved the feat in 277th innings in his 289th match.

Notably, this was his 79th international century overall, taking a step closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 centuries across formats.

Furthermore, Virat Kohli has thus far scored two centuries in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 and is the second leading run-scorer of the tournament behind South Africa’s Quinton de Kock.

Kohli has thus far enjoyed a purple patch in this year’s global event, where the right-handed batter averages more than hundred and has a strike rate of around 85.

He has also scored more than 500 runs in an ODI World Cup for the first time in his prolific career.

Virat Kohli’s record century came in what has been a successful year for the star batter. He has scored more than thousand runs with the help of five tons in 2023, at an average of more than 70 and a strike rate of nearly 100.

It is the eighth time in Kohli’s career that he has scored more than thousand ODI runs in a year, surpassing Tendulkar’s record of seven.

Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 101 turned out to be the centrepiece of tournament hosts India’s 326/5 in their 50 overs.

He shared a third-wicket partnership of 134 with Shreyas Iyer (77) after India captain Rohit Sharma (40) had won the toss on what turned out to be a tricky pitch.

Virat Kohli closes gap on Sachin Tendulkar’s record after 48th ODI ton

Virat Kohli said he was enjoying the “special feeling” of playing in a World Cup on home soil after his unbeaten century guided India to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in their fourth match of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Kohli’s 48th ODI century left him just one shy of equalling Indian great Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 ODI hundreds.

Kohli made 103 not out with a six against spinner Nasum Ahmed, the shot also ending the match in a finish worthy of a Bollywood movie as India reached a target of 257 with more than eight overs to spare.

He faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes, with this century his third score in excess of fifty in four innings following contributions of 85 and 55 not out over Australia and Afghanistan.

“I’ve had a few fifties in World Cups and haven’t converted them so I just wanted to finish the game off this time around,” Kohli said afterwards.

“The pitch was pretty good, it allowed me to play my game and just hit the gaps.”

India have now won all four of their matches in the tournament to date.

“There is a great atmosphere in the changing room, we’re loving each other’s company, the spirit is there for everyone to see on the field,” said Kohli, who played alongside Tendulkar in the India team that defeated Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2011 final in Mumbai.

“We understand it’s a long tournament and you need to create some momentum for the guys to come out and play like this.

“It’s a special feeling playing at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it.”

This was Virat Kohli’s first century in the World Cup since his 107 against Pakistan during the 2015 edition in Adelaide, with the 34-year-old posting seven fifties at the tournament prior to Thursday’s hundred.

Virat Kohli was helped on his way, however, by KL Rahul, who kept himself in check during a run-a-ball 34 not out.

Two balls before he reached his century, a Nasum delivery fired down the leg side was not signalled a wide — although any controversy was short-lived given the ensuing six.

“He (Kohli) was confused, he said ‘it’ll not look too nice not to take the single, it’s still a World Cup, and it’s still a big stage. I don’t want to look like I am just trying to get the milestone’,” Rahul said.

“But I said, I mean it is not won but still I think we’ll win quite easily, so if you can get to the milestone why not, you must try. And he did that in the end. I wasn’t going to run the singles anyway.”

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who made 53, Gill and put on 88 for the first wicket with Rohit before a stand of 44 with Kohli, said batting with the duo was an education.

“I think there’s a fine line between sometimes being too aggressive or going in the shell, especially playing big games.

“But I think the way they play, the way their mindset is playing those big games in the World Cup is what I try to learn.”

‘He surely will come close’ Rashid on Root breaking Tendulkar’s record

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif predicted England’s in-form batter Joe Root to come close to Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Test cricket.

England’s top batter Root, who is in sublime form in the longest format of the game has sparked the debate about him smashing Tendulkar’s all-time record of highest runs in Test cricket by amassing 10,000 runs in the format.

Following Root’s astounding feat several cricketers have come out with their predictions about whether the former England Test captain will be able to break Tendulkar’s record as ex-Australian captain Mark Taylor was the first to back the former to break the record.

The renowned commentator and the former English captain Michael Vaughan also supported Taylor’s prediction later and termed Root the favourite to break the record of the most runs in Test cricket.

The former Pakistan captain Rashid, now has also joined the debate and predicted that Root will surely come closer if could not break the record.

“It’s something you can predict. Some of these players such as Virat Kohli, Babar Azam and Joe Root, these players can score 1000s of more runs [as] they have so much time. Root will be eyeing Tendulkar’s feat. See, certain players left the game a little early or were not in great form,” Latif said on the YouTube show Caught Behind.

“Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting could have come close but for Root, it is important to be in the same form. If in the next 2-3 years, he can score 1200-1300 runs, he can come close. By the time he is 34-35, he may have the hope that he can go past it. Even if he can’t cross, he surely will come close,” he maintained.

It is pertinent to mention here that Root became just the second English batter and the joint youngest to amass 10,000 runs mark in Test cricket after his preceding captain Alastair Cook.

Furthermore, Tendulkar holds the record for most Test runs with 15,921 in 200 matches, whereas, Root has scored 10,015 runs thus far in 118 Tests.

‘Root has minimum five years so Tendulkar’s record is achievable’ Mark Taylor

LONDON: Former Australian captain Mark Taylor backed England’s batter Joe Root to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most Test runs, stating the former has a minimum of five years left in him.

Root, who recently completed 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game amid the recently-concluded Lord’s Test, has got a major motivation as the former Kangaroo captain backed him to break Indian batting great Tendulkar’s record.

“Root has a minimum of five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” Taylor told Sky Sports.

“Root is batting as well as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there are 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy,” he added.

Following his stunning century knock in the Lord’s Test, Root joined the exclusive club of the legendary batters with more than 10,000 runs in Tests.

Tendulkar, who leads the chart with the most runs in the format (15,921 runs) got a new challenger for his astonishing record as the former English captain Root is the nearest current day player having just gone past the 10,000-run mark himself at an age of 31 years.

It is pertinent to mention here that Tendulkar also achieved the 10,000-run mark at 31 years of age and continued to play Tests until after his 40th birthday.
