Shahid Afridi advises PCB on Shaheen’s injury

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and star all-rounder Shahid Afridi advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to handle ace pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi’s knee injury very carefully.

Afridi, during a local news channel’s program, commented on left-arm pacer Shaheen’s injury and shared a piece of advice for both the latter and the PCB.

“Shaheen is now resting because he once again had his knee injured in the same place,” said Afridi.

“I think Shaheen should rest for at least 2-3 months for recovery and be careful while fielding,” he added.

Shahid Afridi also advised Shaheen to be careful with his fielding and not to dive into a position that would require him to go to rehab again.

“He has to play very carefully now and PCB will also have to make sure,” Afridi said.

The former Pakistan captain also responded to the speculations regarding Shaheen playing the recently-concluded ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in spite of the injury and asserted that the latter would not have been able to bowl even two overs in the final.

Meanwhile, PCB Medical Officer Dr Najeebullah Soomro and Australian knee specialist Dr Peter D’Alessandro cleared Shaheen of any serious injury and advised the pacer for rehabilitation of 2-3 weeks.

‘Naseem’s sixes remind us of Shahid Afridi’ says Shadab Khan

SHARJAH: Pakistan vice-captain and player of the nerve-wracking Super Four clash between Afghanistan and Pakistan – Shadab Khan – hailed young speedster Naseem Shah and claimed his two sixes reminded them of Shahid Afridi.

Shadab talked to the presser following the tense clash of the Asia Cup Super Four between Pakistan and Afghanistan and heaped praises on the young fast bowler.

“Naseem’s two sixes remind us of Shahid Afridi,” said Shadab. “I was confident that he can hit those sixes.

“These two sixes will always be memorable for Naseem for the entirety of his career,” added Shadab.

The all-rounder then claimed that it is more difficult to watch Pakistan matches than to play them, while also acknowledging that he should have finished the match.

“Pakistan matches are hard to watch, heart attack can happen. I am more comfortable while playing such matches than watching them,” said Shadab.

“I should have finished the match. Our team is good but we have not become champions yet and we have to become that,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan edged past Afghanistan in a final-over nail-biter courtesy of two astounding sixes from Pakistan pacer Naseem that powered the side into the final of Asia Cup 2022.

Meanwhile, India and Afghanistan have been crashed out of the tournament, while Sri Lanka made their way into the final alongside Pakistan.

‘Ahmed was targeted because of me’ claims Shahid Afridi

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi claimed that his support for the opening batter Ahmed Shehzad as the captain turned out to be of the reasons for the latter’s ousting from the national team.

Ahmed, who last played for the Green Shirts in 2019 and has been openly criticizing the then management for his ‘spoiling and hurting’ his career, appeared on a local television channel Samaa on Tuesday.

Former Pakistan captain Afridi, who was a part of the expert panel amid Ahmed’s interview, made a major assertion about the latter’s exclusion from the team, who played under the former’s captaincy for the majority of his career.

“Ahmed was targeted because of me because I supported him a lot. I gave him a lot of chances, which turned out to be a negative thing for him when I left captaincy. I think people thought he was my favourite,” Afridi said.

“I supported him a lot because I wasn’t finding an opener of his ability in Pakistan. He was performing as well. Obviously, he couldn’t perform in all games but he was targeted because of me as well,” he added.

Shehzad, on the other hand, expressed disbelief over Afridi’s remarks. “Shahid bhai, listen. I don’t know why you said that. You’ve been an elder brother to me, you can say anything to me. Sometimes, it does hurt me, but you have always been an elder brother to me,” the right-handed opener batter stated.

Afridi then interrupted Ahmed by saying that he wants the latter to score runs, to which the Test opener lamented the lack of platforms for doing so.

“I want you to score runs, enjoy your life with your wife and kids. Allah has made life beautiful for you,” Afridi said.

“I keep saying that. I want to score runs, but at least don’t deny me the platforms where I can score. I will ask you when sides in PSL want to pick me, who comes in and says no? You tell me, where do I score runs? At my home?” Ahmed replied.

“India have played outstanding cricket and deserve to win the series. Really impressive bowling performance,” Afridi wrote.

“They’ll surely be one of the favourites for the T20 World Cup in Australia,” he added.

‘I like sharing dressing room with youngsters’ Afridi backs Kashmiri players

KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain and legendary cricketer Shahid Afridi has stated that he likes working at the grass-root level where he can create considerable impact as he becomes the brand ambassador of the Kashmir Premier League (KPL).

Speaking on the occasion of the signing ceremony held today, Afridi claimed that he prefer to work on a level where he had the opportunity to train and polish the skills of young cricketers.

“I like working at the grass-root level where I can create a significant impact,” he said. ” I like sharing the dressing room with young cricketers where I can share my experience with them.”

He further expressed his sympathy for the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir over human rights violations claiming that he never demanded the annexation of the region to Pakistan.

“I never demanded Kashmir to become part of Pakistan, however, I always raise my voice over the oppression inflicted upon Kashmiri people,” he said.

He went on to claim that through this league he wanted to spread a message of peace and cheer the people of Kashmir.

“Political matters are up to the politicians. We just want to make the people of Kashmir happy by playing good cricket,” he concluded.

Shahid Afridi joins Kashmir Premier League franchise Jammu Janbaz

DUBAI: Pakistan star all-rounder Shahid Afridi joined the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) franchise Jammu Janbaz for the upcoming second edition, scheduled in August this year.

Afridi, who withdrew midway from the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), citing his injury vows, is set to make his return to competitive cricket as he will be seen in action for Jammu Janbaz in the second edition of the KPL. The former Pakistan captain will lead Janbaz in the second edition.

Following his inclusion, the star all-rounder claimed that he does not need any farewell as the support of the nation is enough for him.

“I don’t need a farewell for the retirement. The love of the people is too much for me,” Afridi stated.

The icon player of the Pakistan Junior League (PJL) also opined on the newly-announced league and claimed it will bring new talent to the limelight.

“The Pakistan Junior League will bring more young and talented players to the limelight,” he claimed.

Afridi then went on to share his thoughts on the recently-revealed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Central Contracts 2022-23 and said that the cricket board did injustice to a few players.

Miandad set to supervise, Afridi, Malik, Sammy to be Icon players of PJL

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja has revealed the plan for conducting the inaugural edition Pakistan Junior League (PJL) as he charged legendary batter Javed Miandad to supervise the league.

Speaking at a press conference, PCB Chairman announced Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, and Darren Sammy to be the icon players of the league,

He further stated that 30 companies were ready to own the six franchises planned for the tournament.

“PCB is the first cricket board which is organizing a junior league,” claimed Ramiz.

The PJL will be the first of its sort T20 league contested by under-19 teams, featuring local as well as international players. The teams will recruit the young players via a draft system and will be allowed to avail the services of an iconic player as the team mentor to boost the confidence of the players.

‘Afridi’s catch was momentous for team’ Razzaq recalls T20 WC 2009 glory

LAHORE: Former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq termed his counterpart Shahid Afridi’s catch against New Zealand in the Super-8 match as the momentum-booster for not just the Playing XI but for the entire squad in the T20 World Cup 2009.

Following the 13th anniversary of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup triumph, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a video of the former all-rounder Razzaq, who recalled the journey of the historic glory.

The former all-rounder heaped praises on his counterpart Afridi for his contributions to the team’s World Cup glory, while also terming him one of the best players Pakistan has ever produced.

“Shahid Afridi is one of the best players Pakistan has ever produced. Be it bowling, batting, or fielding, he was outstanding and such players are rare,” Razzaq stated.

“The way he took that catch [against New Zealand] lifted the whole team. When someone performs in such a way then it automatically pumps up not just the Playing XIs fielding in the ground but also those who are sitting on the bench. So, I think we gathered a lot of momentum from the match against New Zealand and then went on to win the tournament from there,” he maintained.

In the video, Razzaq recalled the team’s discussion ahead of the marquee event and revealed that the then captain Younis Khan emphasized the need for an ICC event triumph; citing that the team had not won any trophy in the last 17 years.

“Pakistan last won an ICC event in 1992 and it had been 17 years since then and Pakistan could not win any event. So, in the team discussion, our captain [Younis Khan] used to remind us that it’s been 17 years and we haven’t won any trophy so this event is the best opportunity for you,” Razzaq stated.

The former all-rounder then credited the wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal for providing a flying start to the side in the event while he also lauded the bowling attack; calling the couple of Saeed Ajmal and Afridi as ‘unplayable’.

“If the openers play well and for the team in an aggressive manner like Saeed Anwar used to do. So it gives the next batters a relief and momentum, who then try their best to not let it go off. So, if Kamran Akmal is playing and he has scored 50-plus runs in six overs for the team, the upcoming players will then bat in accordance with the run rate,” Razzaq stated.

“For Pakistani bowlers, the best thing for us was that we had the couple of Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, which was very outstanding, they were unplayable and they used to pick wickets and concede fewer runs, which troubled the opposing teams.

“Then Umar Gul used to come in the death overs. His four overs used to go really well and it had no space for the batters to score freely. He, too, used to pick wickets,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup under the leadership of Younis Khan as the Green Shirts defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final at Lord’s.

‘You got Sarfaraz and Rizwan’ Afridi slams chief selector on Haris selection

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and the star all-rounder Shahid Afridi has questioned the chief selector of Pakistan Men’s Cricket Team Mohammad Wasim for the inclusion of the young wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Haris.

The star all-rounder criticised Wasim for selecting Haris for the ODIs and called it a foolish decision while speaking on a local news programme.

“It was a foolish decision by these people. I won’t say this to Ramiz Raja but if Mohammad Wasim is listening, I ask him not to take such steps,” Afridi said.

“Why are you selecting a player who performed in two T20 matches for ODI cricket? Is the process that easy to earn Pakistan’s cap?” he questioned.

The former all-rounder then clarified that he is not against the inclusion of the youngsters but urged that they must play domestic cricket first. Afridi also mentioned the former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as a candidate.

“I also back the inclusion of young players but at least let them play domestic cricket. You have Sarfaraz and Rizwan as well. It is not as if Rizwan’s cricket has finished that you have brought in another player,” he stated.

Afridi also backed the wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, who is struggling to get going in the ODI matches recently and advised the latter to enjoy ODI cricket.

“He doesn’t need to do anything special. Rizwan should enjoy ODI cricket, similar to what he does in T20I cricket,” Afridi said.

“Expectations are so high from Rizwan, due to his performance in the recent past, that if he doesn’t do well in a two or three matches people start talking about him. But we will still back him because he is a key player in our side,” he concluded.
