Suryakumar Yadav urges teammates to ‘shut out the noise’ ahead of Pakistan clash

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has called on his players to block out distractions and keep their focus on the game as they prepare to face Pakistan in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025, just a week after their heated first encounter.

Addressing the media on Saturday, Suryakumar acknowledged the pressure of back-to-back meetings with Pakistan, especially after the fallout from the September 14 fixture, but insisted India’s mindset remains steady.

“I feel our preparations have been really good leading into this tournament. We had three good games, and we are focusing on what we can do best,” he said.

“Playing them once and having a good game doesn’t give us an edge. We’ll have to start well from scratch, and the team that plays better will win.”

When asked about dealing with the hype surrounding the India-Pakistan rivalry, Suryakumar Yadav revealed his simple but effective approach.

“The best way is to close your room, switch off your phone, and sleep,” he said with a smile.

“It’s easy to say, but sometimes it’s difficult because you meet friends, you go out for dinner, and a lot of players like to see all these things. It’s up to you what you want to listen to and what you want to have in your mind before a practice session or a game.”

He added that while it is important to block out negativity, players should remain open to constructive input.

“You don’t have to shut it out completely. Take what is good for you. Someone can give you good advice that can help you on the ground, so that’s very important. I feel everyone is in a good space,” he concluded.

India, unbeaten in the group stage, will carry confidence into Sunday’s clash, while Pakistan, still recovering from inconsistent batting displays, will be aiming to turn the page after a turbulent week.

Suryakumar Yadav snubs Pakistan again

ABU DHABI: India captain Suryakumar Yadav once again snubbed Pakistan as he avoided taking the name of Sunday’s opponents during the post-match presentation after their Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman here at Zayed Cricket Stadium on Friday.

India concluded their group stage campaign at the top of Group A, remaining unbeaten after their victory over Oman. They are now set to face their arch-rivals, Pakistan, again in the Super Four clash in Dubai this Sunday.

During the post-match presentation, Sanjay Manjrekar asked Suryakumar Yadav about facing Pakistan again.

Yadav responded with a brief four-word reply, showing that the team is unfazed by their next opponent.

Manjrekar inquired, “Are you all set for Sunday’s match against Pakistan?” Yadav replied, “We’re all set for the Super 4.”

The two arch-rivals faced off last Sunday in their group stage match, where India emerged victorious after a one-sided contest.

However, the match garnered attention more for the handshake controversy, as both captains neglected the traditional handshake after the toss.

Even after hitting the winning shot, Suryakumar Yadav fist-bumped his partner Shivam Dube, and they went directly to the dressing room without shaking hands with the Pakistan team.

This incident led the PCB to file a complaint with the ICC, requesting that they dismiss match referee Andy Pycroft, whom they blamed for no handshake after the toss.

The Pakistan cricket team threatened to pull out of the tournament if Pycroft was not sacked. However, after Pycroft’s apology, they took the field for their final group stage match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday.

Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav hails ‘unbelievable’ Oman

ABU DHABI: India skipper Suryakumar Yadav shared his thoughts after his side’s victory over Oman, praising the opposition for displaying a commendable performance.

India kept their unbeaten run with a 21-run win over Oman in the last group stage fixture of the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 here at Zayed Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Oman fell short and could only score 167-4  in their 20 overs while chasing a target of 189 runs.

Aamir Kaleem emerged as the top scorer, making a solid 64 runs off 46 balls, featuring seven boundaries and two sixes, while Hammad Mirza provided support with 51 runs from 33 deliveries, which included five fours and two sixes.

Jiten Ramanandi also contributed with a brisk 12 runs off just five balls.

For India, the wickets were shared fairly, with Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Kuldeep Yadav each claiming one wicket.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, Surya hailed Oman for their above-par performance while stressing his batting position.

“Definitely, I’ll try from the next game,” he said in a light-hearted manner on batting higher than the No.11 position.

“Overall, I feel Oman played an unbelievable brand of cricket. It was amazing—I really enjoyed watching them bat,” he said.

He backed Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who played their first game in challenging conditions. Suryakumar Yadav also talked about Harik Pandya, who was excellent in the field and bowling after missing out in batting.

“It’s a little difficult when you’re sitting and suddenly you come out and play,” he said on Arshdeep and Harshit performances.

“It’s so humid here. Unfortunate how he got out, but you can’t keep him away from the game (on Hardik Pandya)—the way he bowled and the way he got out,” Yadav added.

Suryakumar Yadav will not collect Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi: reports

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly requested that if his side wins the Asia Cup 2025, he does not want the trophy to be presented to him by Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, in his role as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), will present the winners’ trophy to the victorious team.

According to a report by NDTV, Yadav has formally requested not to receive the trophy from Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“India captain Suryakumar Yadav has also made it clear that he doesn’t want the Asia Cup trophy to be handed to India by Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council, if the team emerges triumphant in the final. This message has also been delivered to the ACC,” the report stated.

Notably, Yadav was criticised by many Indian fans back home after he was seen shaking hands with Naqvi in the Asia Cup 2025 trophy unveiling ceremony.

However, in the high-octane clash against Pakistan, Yadav did not engage in a customary handshake with his counterpart, Salman Ali Agha, after the toss.

The incident did not end there. After hitting the winning runs, the Indian skipper exchanged fist bumps with fellow batter Shivam Dube and walked straight to the dressing room.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan players lined up and waited for the customary handshake, only to see the Indian team retreat to their dressing room and close the doors.

Suryakumar Yadav dismisses favorites tag ahead of Asia Cup 2025

DUBAI: India captain Suryakumar Yadav played down talk of his side being favorites at the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, stressing that in the T20I format no team enjoys a clear edge.

“I don’t know who said India are the favorites,” SKY remarked with a smile during the captains’ press conference on Tuesday.

“In T20 cricket, the game can change in just one or two overs. Every team here has the ability to win, and we have to play well to stay in the hunt.”

India will enter the tournament having not played as a complete unit since the England series in January and February; however, their skipper dismissed any concerns.

“That’s not a big problem. Players have been active in leagues and other international cricket,” he said.

“As long as we are winning, it means we are on the right track. So far, everything has been good, and we are looking forward to a strong campaign.”

The 34-year-old also highlighted the advantage of flexibility in his squad.

“If batters can bowl, it helps the team. More bowling options make life easier for the captain,” he added.

While India downplayed the favorites tag, the UAE and Oman expressed excitement at the prospect of competing with Asia’s giants.

UAE captain Muhammad Waseem credited his experience of playing alongside global stars in ILT20.

“It’s been a big learning curve for me. Playing with top players has helped a lot, and we’ve been preparing hard for the past month for this tournament,” Waseem said.

For Oman, this year’s Asia Cup is nothing short of historic.

“This is a proud moment for us. We are playing the Asia Cup for the first time, though we’ve already featured in three World Cups,” the Oman captain Jatinder Singh said.

‘Virat, Rohit’s intensity will be missed’: Former cricketer on India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 clash

Former Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan has highlighted the challenges faced by the India team ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, particularly the absences of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the lineup.

Speaking during a show on a sports channel, Bazid Khan talked about the India-Pakistan clash in the upcoming event.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirements from the shorter format of the game after India’s triumph in the 2024 World Cup.

Bazid mentioned the retired duo and their set standards for the India team ahead of the event.

“All these players are high-class,” he said.

“There isn’t anyone here you would say is not of that calibre. But the high intensity that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma brought to the game, that is something India will surely miss,” added Bazid.

He further mentioned the India captain, Suryakumar Yadav’s struggles against Pakistan, stating that his performance against the arch-rivals remains a core issue.

“Suryakumar scores runs against almost everyone, but somehow against Pakistan, he hasn’t been effective. Whether it is the pace attack or some other reason, it remains an issue,” Bazid Khan remarked.

Notably, Suryakumar Yadav will be leading Team India for the first time in a major event.

With India facing Pakistan on September 14, Yadav’s performance will be under scrutiny. This will be due to the dynamic batter’s struggle against Pakistan, as the 34-year-old is yet to make a mark against them.

Overall, Yadav has an average of 38.20 with an excellent strike rate of 167.07 in 83 T20Is. On the contrary, in five T20I innings against Pakistan, he has scored just 64 runs at a modest average of 12.80 with a strike rate of 118.51.

The Asia Cup 2025 is set to commence on September 9 with the opening match between Hong Kong and Afghanistan.

India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson.

Suryakumar Yadav clears fitness test ahead of Asia Cup 2025: reports

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened the door for a return to action, with reports suggesting he has regained full fitness ahead of the ACC Asia Cup 2025.

According to Indian media, the right-hander has successfully cleared a mandatory fitness test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

The clearance almost confirms his availability for the Asia Cup and continuation as India’s captain in the shortest format.

The development comes as a major boost for India, who are set to feature in the Asia Cup, scheduled to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.

Suryakumar Yadav is also expected to be present at the team selection meeting in Mumbai on August 19, alongside chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar.

The 34-year-old had been on the sidelines since the conclusion of IPL 2025, where he was representing the Mumbai Indians.

During the tournament, he scored 717 runs, becoming only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to breach the 600-run mark for the franchise.

Following the tournament, he underwent surgery in Munich, Germany, to treat a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen.

Since returning to India in June, Suryakumar Yadav has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, where he gradually resumed batting and fitness drills before proving his readiness.

It’s worth noting that the Asia Cup 2025 will commence on September 9, with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong in the Group B opener.

India’s campaign will begin on September 10 against the UAE, followed by a highly anticipated clash with Pakistan on September 14. Their final group-stage fixture is scheduled against Oman on September 19.

The third and fourth matches of the series will be played in Centurion and Johannesburg on 13 and 15 November respectively.

Here’s why Suryakumar Yadav was chosen over Hardik Pandya as T20I captain

The decision to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain of India over Hardik Pandya has been attributed to him having the backing of players, according to a report on Friday.

Suryakumar, 33, was named Rohit Sharma’s successor in the T20 format as selectors late Thursday announced the squads for India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka starting July 27.

Suryakumar will lead a 15-member squad in three T20 matches in Pallekele but has not been selected to play the following three ODI matches.

Rohit, who along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja quit T20 internationals after India’s World Cup triumph last month, will continue to lead the ODI team, which will face Sri Lanka on August 2, 4, and 7 at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium.

The 30-year-old Pandya, who was Rohit’s deputy during the T20 showpiece, lost out in the captaincy race to a player who made his debut five years later than the star all-rounder.

A report in the Indian Express newspaper said, “Feedback received by the board was that players trusted Surya more than Pandya and were more comfortable working under him”.

Pandya’s frequent injury breakdowns, including an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup last year at home, also went against him.

According to reports, new coach Gautam Gambhir did not want a captain with injury concerns and was impressed with Suryakumar’s game awareness.

Suryakumar Yadav, a T20 regular who redefined batting in the format, made a late debut for India at the age of 30 but soon became the team’s go-to batter in the middle order.

His audacious strokeplay, including a lap shot behind the stumps, makes him a bowler’s nightmare, considered a “360-degree” player for hits all around the ground.

Most recently, Suryakumar took a stunning catch at the boundary in a tense last over from Pandya to help India clinch a thrilling victory in the World Cup final over South Africa in Barbados.

Suryakumar, who previously captained Mumbai in domestic cricket, last year led India to a 4-1 T20 series win over Australia and followed it up with a 1-1 result in South Africa.

Hardik Pandya had a good World Cup with bat and ball, but the ride has been rough for the Indian star, who replaced Rohit as IPL captain at Mumbai Indians.

He was booed across venues by fans of Rohit, and Mumbai ended bottom of the 10-team table in the T20 tournament.

Pandya has also struggled on the personal front, and on Thursday announced his separation from his wife and Serbian model Natasa Stankovic. They will co-parent a son from their four-year marriage.
