New captain named as India unveil squad for Sri Lanka T20Is

NEW DELHI: Right-handed batter Suryakumar Yadav has been named India’s T20I captain as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced squads for the upcoming white-ball tour to Sri Lanka.

Yadav, who has represented India in 68 T20Is, has a brief captaincy record in the international format, having led his national team in the series against South Africa and Australia last year.

His captaincy stint, however, came in the absence of key players, but has now been given the reigns of a full-fledged team, featuring the likes of Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya.

Meanwhile, batting prodigy Shubman Gill, who led an inexperienced Indian side to a 4-1 victory over Zimbabwe, will serve as the vice-captain in both T20I and ODI series.

Star pacer and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Player of the Tournament, Jasprit Bumrah has been given a rest from the white-ball tour to Sri Lanka while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will feature in the ODI series.

For the unversed, India’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka will mark their newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment after assuming the role earlier this month.

The tour will mark India’s first visit to Sri Lanka for a bilateral series since 2021.

Last week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unveiled the schedule of India’s white-ball tour to Sri Lanka, comprising a three-match ODI and T20I series.

According to the itinerary announced by the SLC, India will touch down in Sri Lanka on July 22 while the T20I series is scheduled to commence on July 26 with the second and third T20Is set to be played on July 27 and 29 respectively.

All three T20Is will take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele before the action shifts to Colombo, where the ODI series will take place.

The three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka will kick off on August 1 while the remaining fixtures will be played on August 4 and 7. All three ODIs will be held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium here.

Top Indian batter likely to pip Hardik Pandya to become T20I captain

Top-order batter Suryakumar Yadav is likely to be appointed as the T20I captain of India ahead of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, as reported by Indian media on Tuesday.

The reports emerged after regular captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket after leading the side to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.

Pandya, who served as the vice-captain during the tournament under Sharma, was initially slated to take the long-term role as the captain of the shorter format.

However, Pandya’s fitness and workload management, along with the newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preference, has led to Suryakumar Yadav’s emergence as the front-runner for the captaincy.

Yadav led India in the five-match home series against Australia last year, leading the side to a 4-1 victory. His second series as captain was against South Africa in December last year, which was tied 1-1.

Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar reportedly discussed their plan with Pandya and explained the reasoning behind the decision.

“Hardik Pandya was India’s T20 vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. He is completely fit and available for the three-match T20I series and was supposed to lead the side but there is a very strong feeling that SKY [Suryakumar Yadav] would be the potential leader not only for the Sri Lanka series but till the 2026 World Cup,” a senior BCCI source said.

India will tour Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI and T20I series. The upcoming white-ball tour will mark Gambhir’s first assignment after being appointed as India’s head coach, preceding Rahul Dravid, who stepped down after the T20 World Cup 2024 glory.

Babar closes gap with top-ranked Suryakumar in ICC T20I Batting Rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam climbed one spot and closed the gap with top-ranked Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20I Batting Rankings.

Babar Azam jumped to the fourth spot with 763 rating points on the back of his impressive showing during the recently concluded T20I series against New Zealand.

The right-handed batter finished the series with 125 runs in four games, including a half-century in the last game, only behind New Zealand’s Mark Chapman (126).

Yadav continues to lead the T20I batting rankings with 861 rating points, followed by England’s Phil Salt with 802 points and Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan with 784 points.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi climbed three places to joint 14th in the ICC T20I Bowling Rankings after ending the New Zealand series as the highest wicket-taker with eight scalps.

New Zealand bowlers also earned rewards for their gutsy performance against Pakistan as Michael Bracewell rose 13 spots to 55th and Ben Sears jumped 29 places to 60th.

Meanwhile, Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim climbed 10 places to 22nd spot in the ICC T20I all-rounder rankings.

Notably, Wasim reversed his international retirement before the New Zealand series and declared his availability for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Yadav fails again as Australia stun India to win ODI series

CHENNAI: Australian spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar turned the match to hand India their first one-day international series defeat at home since 2019 in a thrilling third and final match in Chennai on Wednesday.

Left-arm spinner Agar removed in-form Virat Kohli (54) and the world’s top-rated Twenty20 batter Suryakumar Yadav for his third consecutive golden duck in the first two balls of the 36th over to leave the hosts reeling at 185-6 with a target of 270 to win.

The visitors won the match by 21 runs after bowling out the hosts for 248 in the last over after Australia’s stand-in-captain Steve Smith won the toss and chose to bat first in the series-decider.

The series was important practice on South Asian pitches for Australia before the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

India bowled out Australia for 269 and were cruising in the first 10 overs of their chase before skipper Rohit Sharma fell after a 17-ball 30 with the team at 65-1.

Sharma’s in-form opening partner Shubman Gill too fell soon afterwards after a steady 49-ball 37 to leg-spinner Zampa.

India’s star batters Kohli and KL Rahul struck a busy 69-run partnership before Rahul also fell to Zampa for 32.

The hosts’ otherwise reliable lower-middle order offered little resistance after all-rounders Hardik Pandya (40) and Ravindra Jadeja (18) also fell to Zampa, who finished with 4-45 in his 10-over spell.

Zampa’s spin-partner Agar finished with 2-41 while pacers Sean Abbott and Marcus Stoinis took one wicket each.

Three wickets apiece from Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav left India in need of 270 to win the series, which stood at 1-1 going into the final game.

Earlier, Pandya (3-44) and India’s left-arm spinner Kuldeep (3-56) played an important role in restricting Australia to a chasable 269 in the 49th over.

By the eighth over, in-form openers Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh Suryakumar Yadav registers unwanted ODI batting recordhad hit 10 boundaries between them, including three sixes, and looked set for a commanding partnership before Pandya took three quick wickets of Head (33), Smith (0) and Marsh (47).

Yadav had the better of the middle order beginning with David Warner, who made 23 batting at number four on his return from the elbow fracture that forced him out of the second Test in February.

Marnus Labuschagne (28) was next but Alex Carey stubbornly held on for another 10 overs before his departure on 38.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel and frontline pacer Mohammed Siraj each took two wickets apiece as Sean Abbott (26), Agar (17) and Mitchell Starc (10) added important runs to a below-par score.

Suryakumar Yadav registers unwanted ODI batting record

CHENNAI: Top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav on Wednesday, became the first Indian batter to register three consecutive golden ducks in ODIs amid his side’s third ODI against England.

Yadav, who is going through a rough patch in the 50-over format, registered his third consecutive golden duck in the ongoing home series against Australia.

The right-handed batter was trapped leg before by Mitchell Starc in the first two ODIs before Ashton Agar castled him on the first delivery in the series decider on Wednesday.

Following his miserable run, Yadav became the first Indian batter to register three consecutive golden ducks in ODIs and the second overall in all formats.

Notably, his compatriot Washington Sundar has a likewise dubious record in T20Is. Sundar was dismissed on the first delivery in three consecutive matches in 2020 against West Indies, Sri Lank and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar has also been dismissed on three consecutive ducks in 1994 but all came on the second delivery.

It is pertinent to mention that Yadav was the 14th batter to register three golden ducks in a row in the ODIs. The unwanted list for batters includes notable names like Alec Stewart, Andrew Symonds and Shane Watson.

Suryakumar Yadav named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year

DUBAI: Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav has been named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year for 2022.

Yadav claimed the prestigious award as he overpowered Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, England’s Sam Curran and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza – the other three nominees in the category.

“The winner of the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year had one of the best years any player has had in the format’s history,” said ICC in a media release on Wednesday.

The No.1-ranked T20I batter had a stellar year with the bat during which he broke numerous records in the formal. He became only the second batter after Rizwan to score more than 1000 T20I runs in a calendar year.

The right-handed batter, known for his unorthodox shots and exceptional ability to hit every part of the ground, amassed 1164 runs during last year at an astonishing strike rate of 187.43.

“Yadav was at his stupendous best during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, recording three fifties in six innings and averaging nearly 60 during the tournament. Notably, his strike rate was yet again right up there at 189.68,” said ICC’s media release.

‘Game-changer’ Suryakumar powers India to T20 series win over Sri Lanka

RAJKOT: Suryakumar Yadav, the world’s leading Twenty20 batsman, said Saturday he was thriving in his role as a “game-changer” after smashing a blazing century in India’s series-clinching 91-run win over Sri Lanka.

The hosts rode on Suryakumar’s unbeaten 112 off 51 deliveries to post 228-5 after electing to bat first in the series decider in Rajkot.

India then bowled out Sri Lanka for 137 in 16.4 overs for a 2-1 triumph to extend their unbeaten record in bi-lateral series to 12 on home turf which stretches back to February 2019.

Suryakumar, known as a 360-degree player for his ability to play all around the ground, stood out with his third T20 hundred — in 45 balls — as he stamped his class as the world’s number one batsman in the format.

“It’s really important to put pressure on yourself when you are preparing for a game. If you do that in practice, it gets a little easier while playing the game,” man of the match Suryakumar said.

Asked about his conversations with coach Rahul Dravid, a batting great in the classical mould, Suryakumar said, “He just lets me enjoy myself, whatever I am doing.

“Whatever situation I go in he tells me ‘just enjoy yourself, express yourself and try and be the game-changer on a given day’.”

Skipper Hardik Pandya praised Suryakumar, known as ‘SKY’, saying, “He has been surprising everyone and making everyone know that batting is very easy.

“If I am a bowler, I will be disheartened with the shots he plays. He has played blinders after blinders, which is now becoming a habit.”

The T20 sensation smashed seven fours and nine sixes including three off his trademark scoop shot over fine leg to entertain the raucous home crowd.

India lost two wickets inside six overs after electing to bat first but Suryakumar and Shubman Gill, who hit 46 off 36 deliveries, put on 111 runs to lay the foundations for the total.

‘Lot of Positives’

Left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka struck in the opening over to send back the left-handed Ishan Kishan, caught at slip for one by Dhananjaya de Silva.

Rahul Tripathi, 31, who made his debut in the previous match, then hit back with Gill for company as he hit Maheesh Theekshana for three fours in the fifth over.

Tripathi smashed fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne for two successive sixes but got caught out in an attempt to get another boundary. He made 35 off 16 deliveries.

Suryakumar, who reached his fifty in 26 balls, then took charge with his all-round hitting including three sixes with his scoop shot over fine leg.

Gill joined in the charge as he and Suryakumar smashed 23 runs in the 14th over from Theekshana.

But after three fours and two sixes in his 36-ball knock, Gill was bowled by leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and two more wickets fell before Suryakumar kept up the charge.

In reply, Kusal Mendis started briskly but fell to Axar Patel’s left-arm spin for 23 in the fifth over.

The left-handed Axar was named man of the series for his three wickets and 117 runs in the three matches.

Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals with Pandya, fellow quick Umran Malik and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal taking two each.

Left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh took three including the final wicket.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka, who helped the tourists bounce back from their opening loss in the previous match, hit 23 off 17 balls before departing.

Shanaka said he is “happy” with his performance and there were a “lot of positives” to be taken from the series.

India’s top stars, including regular captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli, will return for the three one-day internationals between the two teams starting Tuesday.

Yadav retains top spot, Babar moves to third in T20I Batting Rankings

DUBAI: India’s hard-hitting batter Suryakumar Yadav retained the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, while Pakistan captain Babar Azam jumped to the third rank in the latest rankings, announced on Wednesday.

Following his magnificent half-century against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup, Azam made significant raise in his ratings, which bolstered him to clinch the third spot.

Whereas, following a dismal show in the semi-final against Pakistan, New Zealand’s Devon Conway slipped a spot to take the fourth position.

Yadav, on the other hand, who became the No.1 T20I batter after a superb showing in the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, smashing three half-centuries in five innings managed to amass his career-best ratings of 869 points.

The right-handed batter’s ratings, however, dropped to 859 points following his 14-run knock against England in the second semi-final.

Despite a dip in the rating points, Yadav managed to retain his top spot as the rest of the batters in his vicinity failed to produce an extraordinary knock.

Besides Yadav, Babar and Conway, Mohammad Rizwan and Aiden Markram are the remaining batters in the top five as the latter two managed to hold on to their second and fifth positions respectively.

In the bowling charts, England’s spinner Adil Rashid made a significant rise as the leg-spinner gained five spots to move up to No 3, while his compatriot Sam Curran jumped two spots to claim the fifth position.

Suryakumar dethrones Rizwan as No.1 ranked T20I batter

DUBAI: India’s dynamic batter Suryakumar Yadav on Wednesday, dethroned Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan from the top of the ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings.

Following an exceptional run in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 – two consecutive half-centuries against South Africa and the Netherlands – the right-handed batter surged to the top of the rankings.

Pakistan’s wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, slipped to the second spot following his struggling knocks against India and Zimbabwe.

Yadav now leads the T20I batting rankings with 863 rating points, courtesy of his valiant knock against South Africa that powered his side to a respectable total despite a horrific start.

Meanwhile, Rizwan occupies the second position with 842 points, followed by New Zealand’s Devon Conway (792) and Babar Azam (780) at the third and fourth spots respectively.

Suryakumar overtakes Babar to bag third spot in latest T20I rankings

DUBAI: Following his recent slump with the bat, Pakistan all-format captain Babar Azam lost his spot to India’s Suryakumar Yadav on the latest ICC T20I rankings.

Babar witnessed a further drop in his rankings as he slipped to the fourth while the Indian middle-order batter surpassed the Pakistan skipper to claim the third spot with 780 rating points, according to the latest rankings released by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday.

Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, stayed at the No.1 spot with a career-high 825 rating points, followed by South Africa’s Aiden Markram on the second with 792 points.

Babar’s sudden plunge on the T20I batters’ list is attributed to a below-par performance in the Asia Cup 2022. Although, he managed 31 off 24 in the series opener against England on Tuesday.

Pakistan skipper retained the No.1 spot for 1155 days- most by any batter in T20Is – before he was replaced by Rizwan earlier this month.
