Cricket in uncharted territory as T20 World Cup starts in Texas

Cricket ventures into uncharted territory on Saturday as the first-ever major tournament to be staged in the United States gets under way in Texas with the opening game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

A month-long festival of the fastest and most explosive form of the sport — which is being shared between venues in Texas, Florida, New York and the Caribbean — begins with the US taking on Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium on the outskirts of Dallas on Saturday.

It marks the opening skirmish of the first ever major International Cricket Council (ICC) event to be held in part in the United States.

While the bulk of the tournament will be played out in the Caribbean, 16 group stage games in the 20-team tournament will be played on American soil, including the highlight of the group stage — a clash between India and Pakistan.

That match is due to be played at a 34,000-capacity temporary venue in Long Island, New York on June 9.

The rest of the tournament will be held in the West Indies, including the Super Eight stage, the semi-finals and the final, which will be played at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

While cricket is widely played at a recreational level in the United States, with strong presences in all three of the states that have been chosen for games, organisers are realistic about the chances of “converting” mainstream American sports fans.

USA batsman Aaron Jones said the hosts are aiming to impress American fans both on and off the field.

“Obviously what you do on the field is very important,” Jones said. “We want to get a lot more support from the American born-and-raised people.

“I think we could only do that by playing good on the field and obviously interacting with the fans or the growing fans off the field as well.”

The ICC also sees the tournament as a launch pad towards the sport’s return to the Olympics for Los Angeles 2028, when the T20 format will be used.

Major League Cricket, a T20 tournament, was launched last year and also stands to benefit from any growth in interest in the big-hitting, spectacular shortest form.

But it is not only the American market that the ICC is focused upon — the expansion of the tournament has opened up opportunities for newer cricket nations to compete on the big stage.

In recent years, the sport has been able to expand outside of its traditional strongholds with Ireland and Afghanistan earning places in the 12-strong elite with full Test status.

But the ICC see the T20 format as the perfect vehicle for growing the game and this year’s edition will feature three T20 World Cup debutants in the USA, Canada and Uganda.

Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Oman are among the other nations who are relatively new to the big stage and who will be looking to make their mark and grab some attention with an upset win.

With the teams drawn in four groups of five teams, with just the top two advancing, none of the smaller nations are expected to progress beyond the group stage and there is a danger the pool stage could mainly be a ‘weeding out’ process.

India, winners of the first edition in 2007, are the favourites, with their lineup packed with players from the annual Indian Premier League.

Australia, winners of the ODI World Cup last year along with the World Test Championship, opted to leave out their veteran batsman Steve Smith but big-hitting David Warner and pacemen Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins provide plenty of experience.

Other possible contenders include defending champions England, who will be without the star of their 2022 triumph Ben Stokes, who is managing his fitness after a knee operation. England warmed up for the tournament with a seven-wicket rout of Pakistan in London on Thursday.

Co-hosts West Indies won the tournament in 2012 and 2016 and are hoping that they can benefit from familiarity with the surfaces in the region.

South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan will all fancy their chances of making an impact in a tournament which always produces surprises.

India crush Bangladesh in T20 World Cup warm-up

NEW YORK: Rishabh Pant’s blistering half-century, followed by a combined bowling effort led India to thwart Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up match here on Saturday.

Opting to bat first, India registered a massive total of 182/5 in the allotted 20 overs, courtesy of Pant’s brisk half-century and Hardik Pandya’s late fireworks.

The former champions, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as they lost Sanju Samson (1) in the second over with just one run on the board.

Following the early blow, Pant joined skipper Rohit Sharma in the middle and knitted an anchoring partnership for the second wicket.

The duo added 58 runs for the second wicket before Sharma fell victim to Mahmudullah in the seventh over.

He scored 23 off 19 deliveries, laced up with two fours and a six.

Pant was then involved in yet another important partnership when he put together 44 runs with Suryakumar Yadav before getting retired out in the 12th over briefly after amassing his half-century.

He remained the top-scorer for India with a 32-ball 53, hitting four fours and as many boundaries.

Yadav then put together a brief partnership with Shivam Dube (14) before perishing in the 17th over.

He smashed four boundaries on his way to an 18-ball 31.

Later, Hardik Pandya took the reigns of India’s batting charge and scored a quickfire 40 off just 23 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and four sixes.

For Bangladesh, Tanvir Islam, Mahmudullah, Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan made one scalp each.

Chasing 183, Bangladesh could only manage 122/9 despite Mahmudullah’s gutsy knock.

Bangladesh had a disastrous start to the pursuit as they lost half of their side with just 41 runs on the board in 8.2 overs.

Following the slump, Mahmudullah joined Shakib Al Hasan and the duo launched recovery.

They batted for almost 10 overs before Mahmudullah opted to retire after scoring 40 off 28 deliveries.

Shakib fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah in the same over, bringing the total down to 116/7. He scored a scratchy 28 off 34 deliveries.

Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube bagged two wickets each while Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya struck out a batter apiece.

India’s comfortable victory over Bangladesh marked the end of the warm-up matches for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The 20-team tournament commences today with the co-host United States of America (USA) taking on Canada in the curtain-raiser.

The Pakistan Men’s cricket team reached Dallas on Friday to participate in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan have been struggling to get on the winning track ahead of this year’s mega event.

The Green Shirts played three bilateral T20I series in a bid to prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024 but could not produce the desired results.

The former champions played out a 2-2 draw against an inexperienced New Zealand side in a five-match home series before registering a 2-1 away series win over Ireland.

In their last assignment before the World Cup, Pakistan succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in the four-match away series against England.

But the biggest setback for Pakistan was the shock loss against Ireland in the first T20I.

Pakistan are placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals India, Ireland, Canada and co-host USA.

The Green Shirts will start their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against the USA on June 6 before taking on arch-rivals India in a blockbuster clash on June 9 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The 2009 champions will then take on Canada on June 11 before locking horns with Ireland in their last group-stage fixture on June 16.

Sourav Ganguly warns India of Pakistan threat in T20 World Cup 2024

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly warned India ahead of their upcoming blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to run from June 1 to 29.

Ganguly mentioned India’s superior record against Pakistan in the World Cups but acknowledged the Green Shirts as more dangerous in the shortest format.

“Our record against Pakistan has been very, very good over a long period of time. In the T20 format, probably Pakistan is more dangerous compared to 50- overs (format). We beat them in Ahmedabad when they came to India and we beat them easily,” stated Ganguly.

“India is superior and if they play well, if they play freely and I keep saying the word ‘freely’ all the time because (in) the last World Cup in Australia, I don’t think we played freely.

“Just put all the cobwebs behind. Don’t worry about winning or losing. Don’t think about winning the World Cup. Just go and play every game.”

Sourav Ganguly further claimed that the inaugural champions “have very good chances” in the forthcoming mega event, highlighting their immense talent.

“India have very good chances in the World Cup. India will have to play like a T20 team. There is enormous talent,” he said.

“Play without fear and just keep hitting. There is enormous talent, (this is) a team which has (Virat) Kohli, Rohit (Sharma), Surya (Suryakumar Yadav), (Rishabh) Pant, (Shivam) Dubey, (Hardik) Pandya, (Ravindra) Jadeja, Axar (Patel), (Jasprit) Bumrah, Sanju (Samson),” he said when asked about India’s chances.

“That’s why I say everyone is capable of winning it for India and the only way they will do it is (if they) just play with freedom.

“Play with that extra batsman and hit from the first ball, hit till you have to defend (and) play like the last ball,” he added.

Notably, India, alongside Pakistan, Canada, Ireland and the co-host United States of America (USA) are placed in Group A.

They will start their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland on June 5 before taking on Pakistan on June 9 in New York.

Rashid Latif has an advice for Babar Azam ahead of T20 World Cup 2024

Former Pakistan Test cricketer Rashid Latif shared a piece of advice for Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to run from June 1 to 29 in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Rashid Latif, a former wicketkeeper himself, advised Babar Azam to assign Mohammad Rizwan with gloves behind the stump.

“One of the biggest issues being faced by Pakistan is the Azam Khan’s wicketkeeping. The team has two wicketkeepers, Usman Khan and Muhammad Rizwan. Babar Azam should go with Mohammad Rizwan for the wicket-keeping slot as he is the most senior,” Rashid Latif said after Pakistan’s defeat against England in the T20I series.

He said that Muhammad Rizwan had been keeping the wicket for the last four years but he was suddenly removed.

“Pakistan are not getting their combination right, which is their biggest problem. Not only shuffle, but players need to be prepared to play at floating roles now in T20 cricket as per the match situation,” Rahid Latif added.

The former skipper said that the captain of any team needs a wicketkeeper’s advice the most.

“Myself and Moin Khan have done wicketkeeping in many matches and used to oversee the match from behind the wicket. If the man standing behind the stumps (wicketkeeper) starts dropping catches, how would he advice the captain,” he added.

Rashid Latif also criticised the management for changing the opening pair, saying that first, they broke the pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then the spinners were changed and now Rizwan is removed from the wicketkeeping role.

It is pertinent to mention here that wicketkeeper Azam Khan did not have the best of the series against England either with the bat or with the gloves.

He dropped catches and could not score big and since then he has been criticized by former cricketers.

Misbah-ul-Haq reveals his top two teams for T20 World Cup 2024

Former Pakistan captain and head coach Misbah-Ul-Haq named his top two teams for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to run from June 1 to 29 in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup will commence at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas with the co-host USA taking on neighbours Canada in the curtain-raiser later today.

Meanwhile, legendary batter Misbah, who was part of the Pakistan side that won the prestigious title in 2009, termed Australia as the hot favourites to win the upcoming mega event, highlighting how they excelled in the Asian conditions in last year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with just one spinner at their arsenal.

“The safest bet I think would be Australia. They know how to win. Whatever may be the condition. They come to Asia and win by playing with just one spinner. You can’t write off Australia from any World Cup,” Misbah said on Star Sports.

“The second team is very difficult. But we have to live in Pakistan, so I’m backing them as the top second team,” he added.

USA vow to play ‘fearless cricket’ in World Cup debut

The United States of America (USA) make their debut in the T20 World Cup against Canada on Saturday and vice-captain Aaron Jones says they are determined to play a ‘fearless’ brand of cricket.

Both teams are making their first appearances in the expanded 20-team T20 World Cup but there is particular pressure on the USA, as tournament co-hosts, with the West Indies, to deliver a strong showing on home soil.

The explosive, short-format of the game, is seen by cricket’s leaders as being the perfect version to capture the imagination of mainstream American sports fans and Jones says the team doesn’t want to be afraid of going on the attack.

“Fearless cricket, positive cricket, smart cricket. I think that’s what we’re really and truly trying to do,” Jones told a press conference.

“We don’t want to regret anything. We want to leave everything out there on the park. And then, obviously, if we come out on top, it’s great. If we don’t come out on top, that’s how cricket goes sometimes. But we don’t want to regret anything,” he added.

The two North American teams have been drawn in a tough group however with India and Pakistan the clear favourites to be the two teams who qualify for the Super Eight stage.

Ireland, who in many ways are a role model for the USA and Canada, having come from relative cricket obscurity to be a regular in major tournaments, will be looking to pull off an upset and sneak into the top two in Group A.

But however the results turn out, it is a landmark moment for the USA team to be in an elite competition after decades of being stuck in minor tournaments.

“We’ve been speaking over the last couple of years about playing in World Cups, about getting test status, about taking USA cricket to higher heights,” said Jones.

“And obviously, we are playing a World Cup starting tomorrow. So that’s probably the highest height (so far),” he added.

Jones was born in New York but raised in Barbados, who he represented earlier in his career, before moving back to the USA to be part of the team.

He acknowledges that the team has the added responsibility of being ambassadors for the sport when they play games in Texas, Florida and New York.

“Obviously, what you do on the field is very important, but I also do think that off the field stuff is very important as well, especially being a country that don’t really know much about cricket,” he said.

“We want to get the fans up; we want to get a lot more support from the American born and raised people and I think we could only do that by playing good on the field and obviously interacting with the fans or the growing fans off the field as well,” added Jones.

Curiously, the first-ever international cricket match was played between the USA and Canada in 1844 in New York and there were a multitude of clubs, particularly in Philadelphia and New York.

But baseball soon replaced cricket as the favoured summer sport with cricket virtually disappearing apart from in a few hold-outs.

However, in recent years, the growing communities from South Asia and the Caribbean have led a revival with competitive amateur leagues now well-established and last year a new T20 pro league, Major League Cricket (MLC) was launched.

The Grand Prairie ground, a converted minor-league baseball park, was opened last year while the cricket venue in Lauderhill, near Fort Lauderdale in South Florida, has already hosted a number of international games.

The venue in Long Island, which will host the big India v Pakistan clash, is a 34,000 temporary stadium which will be dismantled after the tournament, although the cricket field itself will remain.

Jones, who made his debut for the USA in 2018, says the change in the past few years has been remarkable to be part of.

“I think that we are on the up right now as it relates to the amount of cricket we play, as it relates to the infrastructure, different fields, a lot more access to turf wickets which is very important for us.

“Definitely some quality players (have come into) the country over the last couple of years which obviously improves the competition. So right now, I think that things are only up and we just want to keep growing from here,” he said.
