No Pakistani cricketers picked in The Hundred 2025 draft

In a surprising turn of events, no cricketer from Pakistan managed to attract franchises, as they all went unsold during The Hundred 2025 draft, held on Wednesday.

Despite 45 Pakistani players registering for the draft — a mix of seasoned stars and emerging talents — none of the eight franchises showed interest in them.

Pace sensation Naseem Shah entered The Hundred 2025 draft with the highest reserve price among Pakistan players—£120,000. Meanwhile, all-rounder Imad Wasim and explosive left-hander Saim Ayub had set their base price at £78,500.

The list also included Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali, and Mohammad Hasnain, each carrying a £63,000 reserve price, while Mohammad Amir and Azam Khan’s base price was £52,000.

This outcome highlights concerns about the inconsistent performances of Pakistani players in recent months, which may have influenced the franchises’ decisions.

Meanwhile, David Warner, Georgia Voll and Jamie Overton were three of the biggest names to be selected in The Hundred 2025 Draft.

Australia’s Georgia Voll was the first pick in the women’s competition, while big-hitting England all-rounder Jamie Overton went first in the men’s competition.

Legendary Australian opener David Warner will join Overton and Justin Langer in calling Lord’s their new home. England all-rounder Paige Scholfield enjoyed The Hundred Draft, returning to Oval Invincibles in the top bracket at £65k.

Overton and Warner will both be involved in the competition opener, alongside Kane Williamson, a local derby against Oval Invincibles on Tuesday, 5 August.

Voll, fresh off the back of an unbeaten 99 in the Women’s Premier League and a stellar year that’s seen her make her international debut, will join fellow Australians Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt at Edgbaston.

Other names to be picked up included Heather Knight, Rachin Ravindra, David Willey, Deandra Dottin, Noor Ahmad and Sophia Dunkley.

They join a host of international and England superstars already selected for the competition, including Steve Smith, Hayley Matthews, Kane Williamson, Beth Mooney, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Jos Buttler.

In total, 66 players were selected in The Hundred Draft, with the 16 men’s and women’s squads now almost finalised.

All teams will have a further chance to add to their group at the Vitality Wildcard Draft in May, rewarding form in the Vitality Blast men’s and women’s competitions.

ECB reveals schedule of The Hundred 2025

LONDON: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has revealed the schedule of the upcoming fifth edition of The Hundred, set to commence on 5 August 2025.

The opener in the capital will see the London Spirit women’s team and Oval Invincibles men’s side begin the defence of their trophies.

They’ll hope to be back at Lord’s for The Hundred Final on Sunday 31 August, the culmination of 34 matchdays across 27 days of high-quality sport and compelling drama.

Saturday 30 August will see The Kia Oval host The Hundred Eliminator, in which second- and third-placed teams compete for a place in The Hundred Final.

This season, for the first time, direct signings have been permitted in The Hundred. Teams in the men’s and women’s competitions will be able to sign one new overseas player by Deadline Day on 24 February.

Laura Wolvaardt and Amelia Kerr have been confirmed as The Hundred’s first-ever direct signings, joining Southern Brave and Manchester Originals respectively.

Jos Buttler, Charlie Dean, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Marizanne Kapp, Tymal Mills, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews have all been retained by their teams.

“August is fast becoming one of the best months of the summer,” said England Women’s Charlie Dean, who lifted the trophy as part of London Spirit’s team in 2024.

“The Hundred has developed into an excellent competition, we play in front of fantastic crowds and even from the middle you get a sense of how the crowd is so full of families and young people.

“The cricket itself is high quality, the format is accessible and quick, and we’re all really looking forward to getting back to it and hopefully defending our title.”

Meanwhile, Oval Invincibles’ Sam Billings, also seeking to defend the title, said: “It will be great to kick off The Hundred with a sold-out derby at Lord’s.”

“From our point of view, we’re looking to start strongly as we have done the last couple of years to set the tone for another positive year. No doubt it will be a brilliant atmosphere at Lord’s.

“It was another fantastic tournament last year, we’ve worked hard at the Invincibles to build a really strong core and there’s no reason why we can’t have another great year.

“The Kia Oval is undoubtedly one of the best places in world cricket to play, our home support is special. We all hope we can build on the last couple of years and keep the trophy in South London.”

Harry Brook provides update on Ben Stokes’ injury

Harry Brook provided a much-anticipated update regarding the injury status of England Test captain Ben Stokes, stating it “doesn’t look good”.

Stokes suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday’s fixture of The Hundred between Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers.

His team Superchargers stormed to a resounding seven-wicket victory over the home side but the triumph was eclipsed by his gruelling injury, which resulted in him retiring out after managing to score just two runs.

Stokes, who bats as an opener for the Superchargers, sprinted for a quick single in the early phase of the run chase and suffered the injury after completing the run.

He was then carried off the field by the medical staff and looked in extreme discomfort.

After his side’s triumph, Stokes was seen using crutches and the Superchargers affirmed that the star all-rounder may have suffered a hamstring issue, which puts his participation in England’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka in jeopardy.

“It doesn’t look great, unfortunately,” Ben Stokes’ England team-mate Harry Brook told Sky Sports.

“I think he’ll be getting a scan tomorrow and we’ll see how he is.”

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Atherton, commentating on The Hundred 2024, said it appeared unlikely to him for Stokes to feature in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

“The way that he gripped the back of his leg looked like hamstring to me, which may well be a significant period out,” Atherton said.

“But it might not be a structural problem so fingers crossed it’s that and that it’s not as bad as it initially looked and that he can play some part in the Test series.

“But it looks extremely unlikely that he’ll be able to play here in ten days’ time.”

England all-rounder disappointed over Naseem’s unavailability for The Hundred

England all-rounder Moeen Ali expressed his disappointment over Naseem Shah’s unavailability for The Hundred 2024, scheduled to run from July 23 to August 24.

Moeen Ali, who was named Birmingham Phoenix captain last week, claimed that Naseem Shah was their first-choice pacer and was anticipated to deliver notable performances to the side.

He further revealed that the Pakistan pacer’s absence has damaged the team’s balance before reiterating that a player should be free to play cricket if there are no obligations.

For the unversed, Naseem Shah, who was signed by the Phoenix in the £125,000 category, was denied the No Objection Certificate (NOC) by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

According to the details, the cricketing body made the decision in a bid to prevent Naseem from potential injuries and to ensure his workload management as he is Pakistan’s first-choice pacer in all three formats.

Considering Pakistan’s upcoming busy season which includes World Test Championship (WTC) matches against Bangladesh, England and West Indies while also playing an ODI tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB is unwilling to take any risks regarding Naseem Shah’s fitness.

For the unversed, Naseem also missed the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India due to a shoulder injury.

The right-arm pacer suffered the injury during the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023 fixture against India which resulted in him ruling out of the tournament remainder.

The incident occurred in the 46th over of India’s innings when he walked off the field favouring his bowling shoulder on the reserve day allocated for the blockbuster clash between two Asian giants.

Briefly, after Pakistan’s 228-run defeat against arch-rivals India, the PCB called up Zaman Khan and Shahnawaz Dahani as backup pacers for the rest of the tournament, as a precautionary measure to provide a cover for injured Naseem and Haris Rauf.

Later, the PCB confirmed that Naseem Shah was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2023 and Zaman was added to the Pakistan squad.

England Cricket open to IPL investment in The Hundred

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Richard Gould confirmed on Monday they have held talks with Indian Premier League (IPL) owners about acquiring a stake in their domestic The Hundred competition.

The fourth edition of The Hundred, which features eight specially created teams — each with a men’s and women’s side — rather than the traditional 18 first-class English counties, starts on Tuesday.

Its future remains uncertain, with the ECB looking to secure private investment in a bid to cement its position in the global calendar and boost the finances of the domestic game.

The ECB are trying to balance a desire for a cash injection while retaining control of the Hundred by selling off a 49 per cent stake in each team to private investors, with host teams retaining the remaining 51 per cent of shares.

But the hosts could sell part or all of their shares.

“Control comes at different levels, it comes at team level and it comes at competition level — that’s not something we are ceding control of,” ECB chief executive Richard Gould told reporters during a conference call.

“Different investor groups have different needs, for some it is about control of what happens on the field, for others it’s the commercial element.

“You’re right about the strength of the Indian market — it represents probably 90 percent of the revenues coming into the ICC (International Cricket Council) and we have seen the proliferation of IPL teams moving outside of their home market into other national markets. I think that’s to be welcomed,” he added.

The cash-rich T20 IPL, a multi-million dollars spectacle underpinned by the mass enthusiasm for cricket in India, the world’s most populous nation, has changed the sport’s global landscape, with players no longer needing to go through the grind of five-day international Test matches in order to enjoy lucrative careers.

There is a view that IPL owners, such as the billionaire Ambani family who are in charge of the Mumbai Indians, would only be interested in full control of The Hundred team.

“There is certainly the opportunity for people to have potentially 100 percent ownership,” said Gould.

“It depends on the capabilities they can bring both in terms of finance and operation delivery.”

The ECB’s director of business operations Vikram Banerjee said while he had spoken to IPL owners about the Hundred, he was also open to offers from American Football’s NFL.

“I’ve now met and spoken to, a number of times, all the IPL owners and WPL (Women’s Premier League) owners that don’t overlap and there is interest there, from what they’ve told me, which is fantastic and lends into a very exciting process,” Banerjee said.

“I would really hope we have a level of partnerships with some IPL teams, I think that would be brilliant. They have done a great job and know cricket very well.”

He added: “At the same time, we’ve just sent out a document and video to some NFL owners that explains what cricket is and what the rules are.

“In terms of fan engagement, how they can build stadia experience and bring in the next generation, those guys are amazing.

“So, we can bring that blend together, which I think is what we hope to do and that can work really well.”

Naseem Shah replaced by Tim Southee for The Hundred

LONDON: New Zealand’s right-arm pacer Tim Southee replaced his Pakistan counterpart Naseem Shah in the Birmingham Phoenix squad for this year’s edition of The Hundred.

The development was confirmed by the league as it confirmed the availability of the England Men’s players — currently featuring in the home Test series against West Indies — and also the players’ replacements.

As a result, Tim Southee will represent Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred 2024 in place of Naseem Shah.

Last week, Naseem was denied a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to participate in The Hundred.

According to the details, the cricketing body made the decision in a bid to prevent Naseem from potential injuries and to ensure his workload management as he is Pakistan’s first-choice pacer in all three formats.

Notably, Naseem was signed by Birmingham Phoenix in the £125,000 category and his absence from the tournament will result in him suffering significant financial loss.

PCB denies NOC to Naseem Shah for The Hundred – reports

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday, decided against granting the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to right-arm pacer Naseem Shah, owing to his participation in The Hundred.
