Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan unpicked at The Hundred draft

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam and wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan failed to attract any team during The Hundred draft for the 2024 season on Wednesday.

Azam and Rizwan were among the late additions to The Hundred draft along with Pakistan’s T20I captain Shaheen Afridi, however, only Afridi managed to secure a deal during the event.

Eight teams competing completed their squads for the upcoming fourth edition of The Hundred – England’s first-of-its-sort league – after a breathless day of drafting.

Earlier this month, more than 65 Pakistan players registered themselves for The Hundred 2024 Draft, however, only three players were picked.

Pace sensation Naseem Shah was roped in by Birmingham Phoenix for the highest price of £125,000.

Leg-spinner Usama Mir was retained by Manchester Originals while Welsh Fire retained right-arm speedster Haris Rauf.

Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Hasan Ali and Mohammad Amir also remained unsold as no franchise showed interest in them.

The eight-team tournament will kick off at The Oval on July 23 with the high-octane clash between Oval Invincibles and Birmingham Pheonix.

Oval Invincibles win men’s Hundred tournament

Oval Invincibles won the men’s edition of The Hundred for the first time as they recovered from a rocky start to beat Manchester Originals by 14 runs in Sunday’s final at Lord’s.

Reduced to 34-5 in their innings, the Invincibles hit back thanks to dashing displays from Tom Curran and Jimmy Neesham.

Curran and New Zealand all-rounder Neesham shared an unbeaten partnership of 127, which ranks as the highest for any wicket in the history of The Hundred.

Curran was the catalyst with five sixes in his 67 not out from 34 balls, while Neesham added an unbeaten 57 from 33 balls as the Invincibles reached 161-5 from their 100 balls.

After chasing 197 to beat Southern Brave in The Hundred ‘eliminator’ on Saturday, the Originals would have fancied their chances of overhauling the Oval total.

But Manchester captain Jos Buttler, who had starred with a brilliant innings against the Brave, was bowled by Danny Briggs for just 11 to give the Invincibles a huge boost.

Max Holden’s brisk 37 kept the Originals in the hunt as they chased 32 from the final 10 balls.

But Curran conceded only nine from the first five and his brother Sam Curran closed out the game to leave the Originals on 147-6.

“Jimmy was unbelievable. It was a crucial partnership for us and we really fed off each other out there,” Tom Curran said.

Saluting his all-rounder brother, Sam Curran said: “I think at 34-5 it all comes down to Tom and Jimmy and the way they played in a pressure situation.

“I am pleased for Tom, because he’s had a hard season with injury and has been batting brilliantly. I am so happy. I think we are born to play and win trophies.”

In the women’s final of The Hundred, Danni Wyatt starred as Southern Brave’s 34-run win over Northern Superchargers gave captain Anya Shrubsole a memorable send-off.

Wyatt’s brilliant 59 from 38 balls took her past fellow England star Tammy Beaumont as the top scorer in this year’s women’s event with 295 runs in total.

Freya Kemp added 31 as the Brave piled up 139-6 despite figures of 3-21 for England seamer Kate Cross.

Jemimah Rodrigues made 24 in the run chase, but Kalea Moore took 3-15 and Lauren Bell 3-21 as Superchargers were bowled out for 105.

Southern Brave, beaten in the first two Hundred finals, finally got their hands on the trophy, making it the perfect retirement party for Shrubsole.

“It’s gone alright, hasn’t it?” said Shrubsole.

Stuart Broad calls Shaheen Afridi his favourite bowler

Recently retired England pace bowler Stuart Broad showered praise on Pakistan’s premier fast bowler Shaheen Afridi’s bowling action and termed him one of his favourite bowlers.

He further praised Shaheen for his impressive bowling skills, “He’s got such a natural skill — the way that ball swings back into the right-handers is such a pleasure to watch,”

Stuart Broad recently retired from international cricket at the end of Ashes 2023, with 604 wickets in 167 test matches.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, who represented Stuart Broad’s home county side, Notts Outlaws in this year’s T20 Blast, made his presence felt with his all-round abilities.

The left-arm pacer picked up 21 wickets in 13 matches during his T20 Blast stint. He also made notable contributions with the bat for the Outlaws, whose journey ended after a five-wicket defeat against eventual champions Somerset in the quarter-final.

“And he represented the Notts Outlaws this summer, which is close to my heart. He’s one of the bowlers I admire hugely, and I want to see him do well,” Broad added.

Shaheen Afridi is playing for Welsh Fire in the ongoing The Hundred and has set the league on fire with his fiery pace bowling. He picked three wickets in two games. Shaheen’s team will face Oval Invincibles tomorrow.

The Hundred started on August 1, and the final is set to take place on August 27 at Lord’s. Trent Rockets are defending champions, having won the final in 2022 by defeating Manchester Originals by two wickets.

Will Smeed smashes first century of The Hundred

BIRMINGHAM: Right-handed young batter Will Smeed registered himself in The Hundred record book as he smashed the first century of the competition and powered his side Birmingham Phoenix to beat Southern Braves by 53 runs.

In the eighth match of the ongoing second edition of The Hundred, Smeed thrashed the Braves’ bowlers and sailed the ball all over the park to bolster the home side to a competitive total of 176/4 in the allotted hundred deliveries.

The right-handed batter played an astounding knock of 101 runs off a mere 50 deliveries, laced with eight boundaries and six sixes and remained unbeaten as the Phoenix finished with a decent total on the board.

Following his remarkable knock, Smeed became the first batter in The Hundred history to amass a triple-figure mark.

In the run chase, right-arm pacer Henry Brookes then attempted to match his teammate Smeed’s brilliance as he bagged the first five wicket-haul of the competition and added to the misery of the Braves, who fell 53 runs short while chasing 177.

Brookes conceded just 25 runs off 20 deliveries and led the way for the Phoenix with five wickets, while Australian pacer Kane Richardson followed with three wickets.

The brilliance of Smeed and Brookes allowed the Phoenix to register their first victory in the ongoing second edition of The Hundred.
