Santner, batters aid New Zealand beat West Indies by 13 runs in first T20I

KINGSTON: Kane Williamson shone with a solid 47-run knock on his return as Black Caps captain with Jimmy Neesham blasting 33 off 15 down the order while Mitchell Santner bagged three wickets to aid New Zealand edge past West Indies by 13 runs in the opening encounter of three-match T20I series, here on Wednesday.

Set to chase a respectable target of 186, West Indies’ top-order put up a dismal show losing four wickets for 49 in the 7th over. A resounding knock of 42 off 43 by opener Shamarh Brooks and late retaliation by the lower order proved insignificant for the Windies to get past the finishing line.

All-rounder Jason Holder and Rovman Powell scored 25 off 19 and 18 off 12 respectively, before Romario Shepherd (31*) and Odean Smith (27*) combined excellently and entertained the crowd till the bast with their powerful hits.

New Zealand, however, restricted the West Indies on 172/7 in their 20 overs on the back of phenomenal figures of 3/19 by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner while Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson claimed a wicket each.

Earlier after being put to bat, Black Caps went for a solid start with a 62-run opening stand by Martin Guptill (!6) and Devon Conway (43) before right-arm pacer Smith struck twice in the eighth over to get rid of both the openers.

Skipper Williamson then led the charge for Kiwis before Neesham played a late cameo laced with three fours and two sixes to reach the comprehensive total of 185/5 in the first innings.

For West Indies, Odean Smith remained the topped the bowling sheet with his 3/32 while Holder and Obed McCoy took wicket apiece.

McCoy-inspired West Indies thrash India by five wickets in second T20I

BASSETERRE: A record-breaking six-wicket haul by Obed McCoy paved the way for a nervy series-levelling five-wicket win for the West Indies over India in the second T20 International of the five-match series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Monday.

Comfortable winners of the opening encounter in Trinidad three days earlier, India were dismissed for 138 off 19.4 overs with left-arm seamer McCoy returning the outstanding figures of six for 17, the best-ever by a West Indian in T20 Internationals.

Opening batsman’s Brandon King’s 68 set the home side on their way to what looked a comfortable victory before they stumbled towards the end and needed an unbeaten 31 from wicketkeeper-batsman Devon Thomas to reach the target at 141 for five off 19.2 overs and set the stage for the third match at the same venue on Tuesday.

McCoy, who has endured a succession of injury setbacks in the previous 12 months, looked to be back to his best and gave the West Indies the perfect start when he claimed the vital wicket of Indian captain Rohit Sharma with the first ball of the match.

He also completed his four-over effort with a wicket – Bhuvneshwar Kumar – off his final ball and in between added the scalps of Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik and Ravi Ashwin as India’s vaunted batting line-up laboured on pitch offering disconcerting bounce.

“I went into this match with a much clearer mind than the last game,” said McCoy after receiving the ‘Man of the Match’ award.

“I am enjoying the challenge bowling at the start of the innings and at the death and so far I am really learning a lot from these experiences.”

Hardik Pandya top-scored with 31 but no one in the visitors’ line-up was really able to get on top of a disciplined West Indies bowling effort.

King’s polished innings at the start of the West Indies reply came off 52 balls with eight fours and two sixes.

When he was yorked by Avesh Khan in the 15th over though at 107 for four, India looked to tighten the screws, only for Khan to spoil his earlier good work when he bowled a no-ball at the start of the critical final over of the match and Thomas capitalised to take his relieved team across the line.

“We didn’t bat well. We just didn’t apply ourselves, but that can happen,” was Sharma’s assessment of his team’s batting performance.

“But as I have said many times already when you’re trying to achieve something as a batting group you won’t always succeed, so we aren’t going to change our plans based on this result.”

Powell, King help West Indies to blunt Bangladesh in second T20I

ROSEAU: Rovman Powell’s blistering knock coupled with Brandon King’s impressive start stunned Bangladesh as West Indies clinched a 35-run victory in the second T20I, here on Monday.

Set to chase a massive target of 194 runs, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib ul Hasan put up lone resistance of 68 runs, which eventually went in vain as the touring side managed to score 158 runs in their twenty overs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, West Indies underwent an ordinary start losing two early wickets on 26 before King and skipper Nicholas Pooran combined excellently to build a strong partnership of 74 runs.

Part-timer Mossaddek Hussain got rid of skipper Pooran in the 13th over to dislodge the dangerous-looking pair. King, who scored 57 off 43 balls, remained firm on the crease and combined with Powell to build another impressive partnership of 73 runs.

Powell accelerated the West Indian inning as he blasted unbeaten 61 runs on 28 balls smashing half-a-dozen sixes and two fours, helping his side to set a huge total of 193 runs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, showcased a dismal start to their chase as West Indian left-arm pacer Obed McCoy grabbed two early wickets to force the opponents into crisis.

Shakib, however, braved the opponent’s fierce bowling attack and combined excellently with all-rounder Afif Hossain for the 4th wicket partnership of 55 runs.

Afif fell prey to Romario Shepherd after he scored 34 runs off 27 balls, laced with four boundaries and a six. Bangladesh lost the track of its chase after the dismissal as West Indies bowled tightly to the lower order, barring them from swinging the bat freely.

Both McCoy and Shepherd took two wickets apiece, meanwhile, Smith and Akeal Hosein made one scalp each.

It is worth mentioning here that West Indies have clinched a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first match was washed out yesterday.

West Indies stun Bangladesh with six ducks on opening day of first Test

ANTIGUA: Bangladesh put on a dismal show of batting to share an undesired record for most ducks when six of the players went without scoring in their tragic first inning of 103 runs against the West Indies on the opening day of the first Test, here on Thursday.

West Indies firmed their grip on the match with an astonishing start provided by the bowlers as Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph led the bowling attack with three wickets each. Kemar Roach and Kyle Mayers also contributed with the two.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hassan looked in sublime form as he refused to bend down before Windies bowlers and contributed with half of the total runs, after a collapse of the top-order when six of the batters were out on 45.

The skipper continued with his slog sweeps at one end while wickets continued to fall from the other. He finally succumbed to Joseph’s delivery as he mistimed the ball which went straight into Roach’s hands.

Shakib remained the top scorer for his side with 51 runs, laced with six boundaries and a six. Followed by the opener Tamim Iqbal who scored 29 runs.

Meanwhile, six of the batter were sent back to the pavilion without scoring, including opener Mahmudal Hassan Joy, middle-order batters Najmul Hossain Shanto and Momin ul Haq, wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan, and tail-enders Mustafizur Rehman and Khaled Ahmed.

After wrapping up Bangladesh halfway through the second session, openers gave a humble start of 42 runs to the West Indian first inning before pacer Mastafizur Rehman bowled out John Campbell on 24.

West Indies skipper Kraig Braithwaite anchored the first inning with 42 not out while middle-order batter Raymon Reifer was also dismissed on 11 by right-arm pacer Ebadot Hossain.

The hosts will try to build a strong lead when they resume the second day’s play from 95/2 with the skipper still on the crease.

Babar Azam’s glove act costs 5-run penalty in second ODI against Windies

MULTAN: The second ODI between Pakistan and West Indies witnessed an enthralling moment when the national team skipper was found guilty of putting on a wicket-keeping glove while fielding, costing his side five penalty runs in the game.

The interesting incident happened in the 29th over of the game when left-arm spinner Muhammad Nawaz was bowling to West Indian Alzarri Joseph, who guided the ball onto the leg-side while the skipper received the throw wearing a single wicket-keeping glove.

As per the law, “No fielder other than the wicket-keeper shall be permitted to wear gloves or external leg guards. Further, the law mentions that if a fielder illegally fields the ball, umpires shall award five runs to the batting side.

Babar Azam received the penalty with an apologetic smile and shaking his head, a minor irritant to his otherwise joyful day as he made 77 runs with the bat in the first inning while his side completely dominated the West Indies in the field.

The touring side was bowled out on 155 runs while chasing a 276-runs target resulting in a 120 runs victory by Pakistan in the second ODI. The home side has an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
