Brandon King, Keacy Carty score tons to help West Indies thrash England

Brandon King and Keacy Carty blasted centuries as the West Indies scored a series-clinching eight-wicket victory over England in the third and final game of their ODI series at Kensington Oval on Wednesday.

Replying to the visitors’ total of 263 for eight, King and Carty featured in a second-wicket stand of 209, the duo making light of what could have been a daunting task following the early loss of Evin Lewis.

King fell for 102 off 117 balls, which featured 13 fours and one six with victory in sight. Meanwhile, Carty finished on an unbeaten 128 after hitting the winning boundary as West Indies coasted home on 267 for two with seven overs to spare.

Keacy Carty conceded 114 balls during his unbeaten 128, which was laced with 15 fours and two sixes.

“I’ve been getting a few starts without carrying on so I’m grateful that it all came together in such a crucial match,” said Brandon King. “It was a fantastic innings by Keacy. He started fluently and was batting better than me most times.”

Earlier, England were indebted to Phil Salt’s top score of 74 as he averted a complete collapse after the tourists slumped to 24 for four after being put in.

He finally got support from the lower order as Sam Curran contributed 40 while Dan Mousley stroked his way to 57 in successive 70-run partnerships with the pugnacious opener.

Salt’s innings off 108 balls (four fours, one six) was ended by the superb athleticism of King, who leapt high at the midwicket boundary to prevent a six and then relayed the ball to waiting teammate Alzarri Joseph before falling over the boundary rope.

Quickfire 30s from Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer led the plundering of 100 runs off the final ten overs with part-timer Sherfane Rutherford, brought on to complete the spell of the hobbled Romario Shepherd, suffering the most as 57 runs were plastered off his 3.5 overs.

In contrast, seamer Matthew Forde was the epitome of consistency and economy in claiming three for 35 from his ten overs while Joseph and Shepherd took two wickets each.

West Indies’ 2-1 series triumph over England was a repeat of their success 11 months earlier in the Caribbean as the teams shared the first two matches in Antigua before the home side prevailed in the decider in Barbados.

King, bowlers steer West Indies to victory over South Africa

KINGSTON: West Indies’ stand-in captain Brandon King scored a brilliant half-century, coupled with a dominant bowling performance that guided the home team to a 28-run victory over South Africa in the first T20I at Sabina Park on Thursday.

After being invited to bat first, King gave West Indies a flying start with his belligerent hitting. He lost his opening partner Johnson Charles (1) in the fourth over.

However, he continued the onslaught during the 79-run partnership with Kyle Mayers, with King scoring the bulk of runs.

The skipper was dismissed by Andile Phehlukwayo after scoring 79 runs from 45 balls with the help of six sixes and six boundaries.

South African bowler made an amazing comeback after King’s wicket, restricting West Indies to 175-8 in their 20 overs.

Mayers (34) and Roston Chase (32*) remained the only batters other than King to score in double figures.

For South Africa, Phehlukwayo and Ottneil Baartman claimed three wickets each.

In response, South Africa had a horrible start as they lost two wickets inside two overs with 11 runs on the board.

Reeza Hendricks raised a 42-run stand with Rassie van der Dussen (17) for the fourth wicket, however, Gudakesh Motie bowled a two-wicket over to reduce South Africa to 78-5 in 10.5 overs.

Hendricks waged a lone war as wickets kept falling from the other end. He played a gutsy 87-run knock from 51 balls, featuring six boundaries and six sixes, before falling in the final over.

Matthew Forde picked two wickets in the last over to book South Africa for 147 runs, registering a comfortable 28-run win.

Forde and Moties picked three wickets each while Obed McCoy grabbed two.

“I know the conditions well, which was an advantage,” said King, who was playing at his home Sabina Park ground.

“We knew we had to go hard against the new ball as it’d get tougher later. We had 200-220 in mind as we had wickets in hand but fell short on a tough pitch.”

The second and third games of the series are also being played in Kingston on Saturday and Sunday ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 hosted by the West Indies and the United States which starts on June 1.

West Indies breeze past UAE after Brandon King’s maiden ton

SHARJAH: Brandon King smashed his first One-Day international century to help West Indies seal a seven-wicket victory over UAE in the first match of the three-ODI series on Sunday.

Powell, King help West Indies to blunt Bangladesh in second T20I

ROSEAU: Rovman Powell’s blistering knock coupled with Brandon King’s impressive start stunned Bangladesh as West Indies clinched a 35-run victory in the second T20I, here on Monday.

Set to chase a massive target of 194 runs, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib ul Hasan put up lone resistance of 68 runs, which eventually went in vain as the touring side managed to score 158 runs in their twenty overs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, West Indies underwent an ordinary start losing two early wickets on 26 before King and skipper Nicholas Pooran combined excellently to build a strong partnership of 74 runs.

Part-timer Mossaddek Hussain got rid of skipper Pooran in the 13th over to dislodge the dangerous-looking pair. King, who scored 57 off 43 balls, remained firm on the crease and combined with Powell to build another impressive partnership of 73 runs.

Powell accelerated the West Indian inning as he blasted unbeaten 61 runs on 28 balls smashing half-a-dozen sixes and two fours, helping his side to set a huge total of 193 runs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, showcased a dismal start to their chase as West Indian left-arm pacer Obed McCoy grabbed two early wickets to force the opponents into crisis.

Shakib, however, braved the opponent’s fierce bowling attack and combined excellently with all-rounder Afif Hossain for the 4th wicket partnership of 55 runs.

Afif fell prey to Romario Shepherd after he scored 34 runs off 27 balls, laced with four boundaries and a six. Bangladesh lost the track of its chase after the dismissal as West Indies bowled tightly to the lower order, barring them from swinging the bat freely.

Both McCoy and Shepherd took two wickets apiece, meanwhile, Smith and Akeal Hosein made one scalp each.

It is worth mentioning here that West Indies have clinched a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first match was washed out yesterday.
