Revised schedule for T20I tri-series in Pakistan revealed

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a revised schedule for the upcoming T20I tri-nation series involving hosts Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe.

The cricket board confirmed that the entire tournament will now take place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

According to the updated itinerary, the tri-series will now begin on November 18, a day later than originally planned, with the final set for November 29.

The adjustment follows recent developments surrounding Sri Lanka’s ongoing white-ball tour of Pakistan, which has been clouded by uncertainty after several Sri Lankan players reportedly expressed concerns about security in the aftermath of a bomb blast in Islamabad.

While speculation had swirled over whether Sri Lanka might curtail their stay, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) moved swiftly to allay fears, releasing a statement that assured, “comprehensive security arrangements” were being closely coordinated with the PCB and local authorities to ensure the safety of all players.

The PCB, meanwhile, has sought to minimize disruption by consolidating the tri-series entirely in Rawalpindi, a venue that has become a regular home for international cricket in recent months.

Revised T20I Tri-Series Schedule:

  • November 18: Pakistan vs Zimbabwe
  • November 20: Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe
  • November 22: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka
  • November 23: Pakistan vs Zimbabwe
  • November 25: Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe
  • November 27: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka
  • November 29: Final

SLC issues statement on Pakistan tour amid safety concerns

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has instructed its players and support staff to continue the ongoing Pakistan tour, following several members of the touring squad’s expressed desire to return home due to safety concerns.

This comes after Sri Lankan players sought an early exit from the Pakistan tour due to security concerns.

Following the development, SLC stated that it had prioritized players’ safety and discussed the matter with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“SLC immediately engaged with the players and assured them that all such concerns are being duly addressed in close coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of every member of the touring party,” the statement read.

“In this context, SLC has instructed all players, support staff, and team management to continue with the tour as scheduled,” it added.

The board further clarified that any player or support staff choosing to return home would be replaced immediately to ensure the series proceeded without disruption.

“However, should any player or member of the touring party decide to return to Sri Lanka despite the directive issued by SLC to continue with the tour, Sri Lanka Cricket will immediately send replacements to ensure that the tour continues without interruption,” the board said.

“If any player, players, or member of the support staff return despite SLC’s directives, a formal review will be conducted to assess their actions, and an appropriate decision will be made upon the conclusion of the review.”

Earlier today, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner expressed satisfaction over the security arrangements after meeting with Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and PCB Chairman Naqvi met with the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, Rear Admiral (R) Fred Siriweera, and the team manager, assuring them of full-proof security throughout their stay.

For the unversed, Sri Lanka is currently touring Pakistan for a three-match ODI series and a T20I tri-series.

Pakistan leads the ODI series 1-0, with the remaining two ODIs to be scheduled on 13 and 15 November at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The ODI series will be followed by a T20I tri-series featuring Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Salman Ali Agha soars, Babar Azam slips in ICC ODI Rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan all-rounder Salman Ali Agha has achieved a career-best ranking following his match-winning performance against Sri Lanka, while former captain Babar Azam continues to slide in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Rankings released on Wednesday.

Salman guided Pakistan to a thrilling six-run victory in the opening ODI at Rawalpindi on Tuesday with a magnificent unbeaten 105 off 87 balls.

Consequently, he jumped 14 places in the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings, climbing to 16th position with 639 rating points, his highest tally to date.

Meanwhile, Saim Ayub continued his upward trajectory, rising 18 places to joint 35th, thanks to back-to-back fifties against South Africa, despite managing only six runs against Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, senior players endured mixed fortunes. Babar Azam, who scored 29 runs in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, slipped two spots to seventh.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan fell four places to 27th after scoring just five runs, and Fakhar Zaman dropped five positions to 31st following his 55-ball 32.

Among bowlers, Haris Rauf made notable gains after his four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, moving up three spots to 28th in the ICC Bowling Rankings.

Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, despite not featuring in the Rawalpindi ODI, surged 18 places to 20th, courtesy of his stellar 4-27 in the series-deciding win against South Africa, his best ODI performance yet.

Skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi dropped one place to 16th, while among all-rounders, Salman Ali Agha continued his rise, climbing seven spots to 11th, making him Pakistan’s highest-ranked all-rounder in ODIs.

Haris’ four-fer, Agha’s ton help Pakistan go 1-0 up in ODI series

RAWALPINDI: Salman Ali Agha’s unbeaten ton, followed by Haris Rauf’s four-wicket haul, led Pakistan to a narrow six-run victory against Sri Lanka in the ODI series opener here at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Set a stiff 300-run target, Sri Lanka managed to score 293-9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Pathum Nissanka and debutant Kamil Mishara started strong, adding 85 for the opening wicket in just 11.4 overs. The duo batted with freedom and targeted vivid bowling from Pakistan’s pacers.

The Islanders were cruising, but the introduction of pacer Haris Rauf jolted with three quick wickets and lifted the home side. As a result, they slide from 85-0 to 90-3 in 13.2 overs.

Kamil Mishara (38 from 36 balls) and Kusal Mendis (0) were sent back on successive deliveries. Meanwhile, Nissanka followed them after making 29 from 39 with the help of three fours.

With wickets tumbling, Sadeera Samarawickrama and skipper Charith Asalanka partnered and stitched a 57-run partnership. It was Rauf again for Green Shirts that provided the much-needed breakthrough.

Samarawickrama was caught at the slips, thanks to Babar Azam’s blinder. The right-hander struck six fours in his 48-ball 39.

Pakistan continued to mount pressure and tore through the lower-middle order, but Wanindu Hasaranga stood in their way and kept his side in the hunt till the end.

He scored a brisk 59 from 52, studded with seven boundaries, before getting dismissed in the second last over.

For Pakistan, Haris Rauf remained the pick of the bowlers, taking a four-wicket haul. Faheem Ashraf and Naseem Shah also chipped in with two wickets each.

Earlier, Salman Ali Agha’s second ODI ton and Hussain Talat’s maiden half-century pulled Pakistan out of the trouble and helped them post a strong total.

Put into bat first in the ODI series opener, Pakistan piled up 299-5 in their 50 overs despite being reduced to 95-4 at one stage of their innings.

Asitha Fernando started the proceedings for Sri Lanka, trapping the in-form Saim Ayub lbw for six in the fourth over.

After the early wicket, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam paired for a 54-run partnership coming on 84 balls, thanks to the visitors’ clinical bowling.

However, Zaman’s wicket in the 17th over triggered a mini collapse. The left-hander made 32 from 55 balls before getting stumped off Wanindu Hasaranga’s bowling.

Soon after, Mohammad Rizwan (5) was trapped lbw as well, courtesy of Wanindu Hasaranga’s spin wizardry. The home side were further left in dire straits as Babar Azam was castled by a beauty from Hasaranga.  He made 29 from 51 with the aid of three fours.

Consequently, Green Shirts slumped from 68-1 to 95-4 in the span of six overs.

Sri Lanka were all over Pakistan, but it was Salman Ali Agha’s and Hussain Talat’s 138-run partnership, which not only took the home side out of trouble, but also helped in reaching an above-par total.

The duo batted with responsibility at a brisk rate and brought the total to 233 in 43.3 overs. The stand eventually culminated with Talat’s wicket, who fell after scoring 62 from 63, striking six fours and a maximum.

Meanwhile, Salman continued and forged another 66* run partnership with Mohammad Nawaz, who scored a quick-fire 36* from just 23 balls, laced with five fours and a six.

The duo put on a show at the end and accumulated 59 from the last five overs, bringing the total near the 300-run mark. Salman notched up his second ODI ton in the process and remained unbeaten with 105* from 87 balls, studded with nine fours.

For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga picked up three wickets, whereas Asitha Fernando and Maheesh Theekshana managed to scalp one apiece.

Shaheen Afridi breaks silence on replacing Mohammad Rizwan as captain

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s newly appointed ODI captain Shaheen Afridi hailed Mohammad Rizwan and spoke about their discussion before taking over the reins of the national side.

Shaheen replaced Rizwan as the captain of the 50-over side last month and led Pakistan to a 2-1 series triumph over South Africa.

Speaking on the eve of the ODI series opener against Sri Lanka, Shaheen talked about the discussion with the former skipper before taking the reins of the team.

“When I was captain earlier, I had spoken to Babar at that time about the whole situation. I won’t go into details about being removed, but when I was offered the captaincy again, Rizwan was the first person I spoke to. I asked him how he felt about it and what he thought,” he revealed in a press conference.

He lavished praise on Rizwan and stated that the wicket-keeper himself decided to step down from the role.

“Rizwan is a great person — he himself decided to step back. So yes, we discussed it before the final decision was made,” Shaheen told reporters.

Regarding ace batter Babar Azam’s form, Shaheen expressed confidence in the right-hander to shine against Sri Lanka, despite being unable to notch up a century in international cricket since 2023.

“Babar is not the kind of player who can be judged by one or two innings. He’s already finding his rhythm again, and Insha’Allah, I’m confident he’ll score a hundred very soon,” he explained.

“I don’t think playing in front of a home crowd adds pressure. In fact, when your own people cheer for you, it gives you confidence. Playing at home, in familiar conditions, with fans backing you — that’s the best feeling,” he concluded.

The first ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will begin tomorrow at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The second and third matches of the series will be played at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on November 13 and 15.

Pakistan crush Kuwait to win Hong Kong Sixes 2025 title

MONG KOK: Dominant Pakistan outplayed Kuwait by 44 runs to secure the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 title here at Mission Road Ground on Sunday.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan racked up a mammoth 135 for 3 in their allotted six overs.

Captain Abbas Afridi spearheaded the team’s efforts with an outstanding performance, scoring 52 runs off a mere 11 balls and launching seven colossal sixes before leaving the field due to injury.

Abdul Samad also made a significant impact with 42 runs from 13 balls, while Khawaja Nafay chipped in with a brisk 22 runs off just six deliveries, as Pakistan’s top order dominated the Kuwaiti bowling lineup.

Though Meet Bhavsar delivered an impressive three-wicket haul, the Kuwaiti bowlers found it challenging to keep pace with Pakistan’s explosive batting, which recorded an exceptional run rate of 22.5 runs per over.

Kuwait fought valiantly in response but could only score 92 runs in five overs. Bhavsar finished the innings not out with 33 runs, and Adnan Idrees added a quick 30 runs.

For Pakistan, Maaz Sadaqat stood out with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 29 runs, while Abbas Afridi and Muhammad Shahzad each claimed one wicket.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan triumphed over Australia in a nail-biting semi-final, winning by only a single run.

Khawaja Nafay was instrumental in this victory, scoring an impressive 50 runs off just 14 balls, helping Pakistan post a total of 121 for 2.

Pakistan ended on the winning side, courtesy of their tight bowling in the last overs, which secured the win and advanced them to the final.

Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub seal ODI series win for Pakistan

FAISALABAD: Abrar Ahmed took a four-wicket haul and Saim Ayub struck a fluent half-century to power Pakistan to a dominant seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the third ODI at Iqbal Stadium on Saturday, sealing the series 2-1.

Chasing a modest 144-run target, Pakistan wrapped up the game in just 25.1 overs, cruising to victory with 149 balls to spare.

The start, however, was anything but ideal for the hosts as Fakhar Zaman departed for a two-ball duck, undone by Nandre Burger.

But Saim Ayub and Babar Azam joined hands to steady the innings with a fluent 65-run partnership that swung the momentum Pakistan’s way. Babar looked set before a mix-up cost him his wicket, run out for 27 off 32 balls.

Saim was joined by Mohammad Rizwan, and they stitched another 65-run stand that virtually ended South Africa’s hopes.

Saim played a sparkling 77-run knock from 70 balls, laced with eleven boundaries and a towering six. He eventually fell to Bjorn Fortuin with Pakistan just 14 runs away from the target.

Rizwan remained unbeaten on 32, while Salman Ali Agha’s brief cameo (5* off 2) wrapped up the chase.

Earlier, South Africa’s decision to bat first backfired despite a promising start, as the visitors were bundled for 143 in 37.5 overs against Pakistan’s attack.

Openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Quinton de Kock laid the platform with a 72-run stand, punishing the new ball early on.

Pretorius looked in fine touch before Salman Ali Agha provided the breakthrough, dismissing him for a well-made 39 off 45 balls, decorated with four boundaries and a six.

De Kock held firm to notch up a composed 53 off 70 deliveries, but found little support from the middle order.

Once Mohammad Nawaz removed the South African wicketkeeper-batter in the 25th over, the innings unravelled dramatically.

From 106 for two, the Proteas collapsed in stunning fashion, losing their last eight wickets for just 37 runs.

Besides the openers, only captain Matthew Breetzke (16) and Nqabayomzi Peter (16) managed double figures for the visitors.

Abrar Ahmed was the chief destroyer, spinning a web around the opposition to claim 4 for 27 in his 10-over spell, his best figures in ODIs.

Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, Salman Ali Agha, and Mohammad Nawaz chipped in with two wickets apiece.

‘Ice Broken’: Mohsin Naqvi, BCCI hold informal talks over Asia Cup trophy row

Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has announced that an informal meeting took place with Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), regarding the controversy surrounding the Asia Cup 2025 trophy, according to Indian media reports.

The ongoing issue began when India’s Suryakumar Yadav-led team won the Asia Cup final against Pakistan on September 28.

However, they declined to accept the winners’ trophy and medals from Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The presentation ceremony was delayed for nearly an hour as negotiations continued backstage before ending abruptly without a trophy handover, leaving the silverware stranded at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to the Press Trust of India (PTI) that ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja and CEO Sanjog Gupta facilitated discussions between the two boards during the recent ICC meetings held in Dubai.

“I was part of both the formal and informal ICC meetings. The issue wasn’t on the official agenda, but the ICC facilitated a separate discussion between myself and Mohsin Naqvi,” Saikia said.

“It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides participated cordially, and the ice has been broken. Now, different options are being explored to settle this issue amicably,” he added.

The Asia Cup trophy, which has remained under the supervision of ACC staff in Dubai, reportedly cannot be moved without Naqvi’s approval.

Both boards are now said to be working towards a mutually agreeable solution, with the possibility of a neutral ceremony being considered.
