Rain plays spoilsport as India edge Pakistan in Hong Kong Sixes

MONG KOK: Rain robbed Pakistan of a potential comeback as India claimed a narrow two-run win via the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method in a pulsating Hong Kong Sixes clash at the Mission Road Ground on Friday.

In pursuit of 87, Pakistan came out firing with Khawaja Nafay leading the charge.

The right-hander flicked Abhimanyu Mithun for four before launching two consecutive sixes to set the tone. With 18 runs coming off the opening over, Pakistan looked well in control of the chase.

However, Stuart Binny struck back in the following over after being hit for a six by Maaz Sadaqat, dismissing him for seven.

Despite the setback, Nafay kept Pakistan afloat, striking Shahbaz Nadeem for a boundary and a six in the third over to take his team to 41-1.

Just when momentum seemed to be shifting towards Pakistan, the rain arrived, halting play and ultimately deciding the contest.

At the time of interruption, India were ahead on the DLS calculations, sealing a two-run victory in a game that promised a thrilling finish.

Earlier, India’s top order set a strong platform with Robin Uthappa and Bharat Chipli attacking from the start.

Uthappa struck two fours and three sixes in his 28 off 12 before falling to Mohammad Shahzad, who picked up two wickets in a fine over to peg India back.

Despite the flurry of wickets, skipper Dinesh Karthik’s quickfire cameo, highlighted by a towering six, helped India post a competitive 86-4 in their allotted overs.

Chipli contributed 24 off 13, while Shahzad was Pakistan’s standout bowler with two crucial strikes.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan began their Hong Kong Sixes campaign on a strong note as captain Abbas Afridi scored an impressive half-century to secure a thrilling victory over Kuwait.

Chasing a daunting 124 in six overs, Pakistan turned the contest into a power-hitting exhibition, thanks to Afridi’s brutal 55 off just 12 balls, a knock laced with one four and eight towering sixes.

De Kock’s 123* hands Pakistan a drubbing in second ODI

FAISALABAD: Quinton de Kock’s unbeaten 123* off 119 balls helped South Africa outplay Pakistan in the second ODI to level the three-match series here on Thursday.

South Africa chased down the 270-run target with ease, losing just two wickets in the process, with 59 balls to spare.

The series decider will be played on Saturday, November 8, at the same venue.

Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius provided the Proteas a brisk start, adding 81 in just 11.5 overs. Pretorius remained the core aggressor, scoring 46 off 40 balls with the help of seven fours and a six.

However, the monumental 153-run partnership for the second wicket between De Kock and Tony de Zorzi kept Pakistan bowlers at bay.

Both batters notched up half-centuries at a quick-scoring rate. De Zorzi fell after a brisk 76 from 63 balls studded with nine fours and three sixes. Meanwhile, De Kock continued till the end and scored his 22nd ODI century.

The southpaw returned to his best with an innings that included seven maximums and eight fours.

For Pakistan, there was nothing much in the wickets columns with Mohammad Wasim and Faheem managing to scalp one wicket apiece.

Earlier, opting to bat first here at the Iqbal Stadium, Pakistan managed to post 269-9 on the board in their 50 overs despite a miserable start.

South Africa’s Nandre Burger inflicted a horror start with Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan sent back inside the first five overs.

Zaman was caught behind for nought on the third ball of the opening over, followed by Babar in the fourth. The right-hander made 11 from 13 balls while Rizwan could not extend his stay at the crease and was removed on the fifth ball of the same over for four.

As a result, Green Shirts were in tatters with 22-3 in 4.5 overs.

However, Salman Ali Agha and Saim Ayub paired up and stitched a 92-run partnership from 119 balls, which steadied Pakistan’s innings. Saim remained the core aggressor while Salman played second-fiddle.

The pivotal partnership was ultimately broken by Corbin Bosch in the 25th over when he caught and bowled Saim.

The opening batter made a significant contribution to Pakistan’s score, tallying 53 runs off 66 balls, which included five fours and a six.

Pakistan faced another setback when Hussain Talat was dismissed for 10 runs by Nqabayomzi Peter in the 30th over.

Agha played a key role in forming a crucial 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket with fellow all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz.

He was eventually dismissed by Bosch in the 41st over, finishing as Pakistan’s top scorer with a resilient 69 runs from 105 balls, which featured five fours.

Following Agha’s exit, Nawaz took control of the innings, making 59 runs off 59 balls, and hitting four sixes and three fours before being dismissed by Nqabayomzi Peter on the second-to-last delivery of the final over.

He received notable assistance from Faheem Ashraf, who delivered a quick-fire 28 runs off just 18 balls, including two sixes and two fours.

For South Africa, Nandre Burger shone as the standout bowler, taking four wickets in his quota of 10 overs.

Babar Azam, Saim Ayub make gains in ICC T20I Rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan batters Babar Azam and Saim Ayub have made impressive gains in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings, following their standout performances in a 2-1 series triumph over South Africa.

The weekly update, released on Wednesday, saw both batters climb significantly in the rankings.

Babar Azam, who played a crucial match-winning knock in the third T20I, jumped nine places to 30th with 563 points.

Saim Ayub, on the other hand, surged ten spots to 39th after his blistering unbeaten 71 in the second match that helped Pakistan level the series.

Opener Sahibzada Farhan held firm at 11th place, while captain Salman Ali Agha climbed 10 spots to 54th.

However, Fakhar Zaman slipped four places to 63rd, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, who did not feature in the series, dropped two positions to 42nd.

India’s Abhishek Sharma continues to lead the T20I batting charts, with England’s Phil Salt and India’s Tilak Varma rounding out the top three.

In the bowlers’ rankings, Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed maintained his stronghold at eighth, while Shaheen Afridi rose three places to 13th after consistent performances with the new ball.

Pacer Salman Mirza emerged as one of the biggest movers, leaping 98 places to 45th following his fiery spell in the second T20I. Faheem Ashraf also made significant progress, climbing 50 spots to 51st.

Saim Ayub retained his position as the world’s No.1 T20I all-rounder, ahead of Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza and West Indies’ Roston Chase, who moved to second and third respectively.

Australia announce squad for first Ashes Test squad

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia (CA) announced a 15-member squad for the first Test of the Ashes against England, which is scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Chief selector George Bailey hailed “impressive” uncapped opener Jake Weatherald as having all the right attributes after he was named in the squad.

In-form batter Marnus Labuschagne was recalled, but young opener Sam Konstas was dropped from the squad that will be captained by Steve Smith in the injury-enforced absence of Pat Cummins.

Should the 31-year-old pad up against Ben Stokes’s England, he will be the sixth opening partner for Usman Khawaja since David Warner retired early last year.

Previous experiments with Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head, Labuschagne and Konstas did not pan out. But Bailey would not say if Weatherald would definitely make his debut in Perth on November 21.

“No, not confirmed in the XI,” Bailey said. “Obviously, we’ve got 14 of our 15-man squad playing round four (of the Sheffield Shield).”

“Still some information to gather out of that. Cameron Green, being one, returning to the bowling crease, that’d be good.”

All-rounder Green has been playing as a batsman only since his return mid-year following back surgery 13 months ago. He has bowled just a handful of overs this season.

Should be able to demonstrate he can handle a sufficient workload to support the pace attack, Green will likely drop to bat at six with Weatherald opening.

In that scenario, Labuschagne, who is back after being dropped for the last Test series against the West Indies, would come in at his preferred number three, having blasted five centuries in eight innings this season.

If Green is still struggling, then Labuschagne would potentially open alongside Khawaja with Green at three and Beau Webster retaining his spot at six.

Tasmanian left-hander Weatherald has been a top-performing opener in domestic ranks over the past few years.

He put himself on the Ashes radar by clobbering 183 for Australia A during a red-ball series against Sri Lanka A in Darwin this year, with his form continuing in the Sheffield Shield.

“I think if you look at his performance over 18 to 24 months, it’s been really solid, and then there’s a method there that I think we like and is complementary to those other players around him in the squad,” Bailey said.

“He scores at a good rate. The way he goes about building his innings, it’s been impressive.”

His inclusion meant disappointment for Matt Renshaw, who had been tipped to get the nod as Konstas has struggled for form.

Smith takes charge because Cummins, who will travel with the squad to Perth, has not played since picking up a lower back injury against the West Indies more than three months ago.

The day-night second Test in Brisbane from December 4 is a tentative target for Cummins to return.

The ever-reliable Scott Boland will replace Cummins in the seam attack alongside quick bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Nathan Lyon provides the spin option in his 140th Test, where he can surpass Glenn McGrath to become the sixth-highest wicket-taker in history by claiming two more victims.

Uncapped Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott were included as the back-up fast bowlers, and Josh Inglis will provide cover for wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Following Perth, the five-Test series moves to Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.

England drew 2-2 on home turf in the most recent Ashes series in 2023, but have not won in Australia since 2010-2011.

Agha, Rizwan and bowlers help Pakistan beat South Africa in ODI series opener

FAISALABAD: Clinical bowling, backed by Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan’s gutsy half-centuries, guided Pakistan to victory against South Africa in the first One Day International (ODI) here at the Iqbal Stadium on Tuesday.

Set 264, Pakistan hit the winning runs on the loss of eight wickets with two balls to spare.

Pakistan had a similar start to South Africa, with openers laying a solid foundation, adding an 87-run partnership in 15.2 overs. Saim Ayub was the first wicket to fall, trapped in front by Donovan Ferreira.

The left-hander made 39 from 42, striking four boundaries and a six.. Fakhar, who was going well, perished after skying one onto long on. Babar Azam, who opened his account with a beautiful cover drive, could not extend his stay on the crease and was lbw for seven.

As a result, the home side were reduced from 87-0 to 105-3 in 19.5 overs. With two new batters at the crease, the Proteas sensed an opening; however, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha forged a 91-run partnership that took the game away from them.

Both batters batted with resilience and notched up half-centuries, which put Pakistan in a position of victory. Rizwan top-scored with 55 from 74 balls with the help of six fours, while Salman Ali Agha hit five boundaries and a six on his way to 62 from 71 balls.

However, just when Pakistan seemed to be cruising towards victory, a few quick wickets slumped them from 241-5 to 263-8 in 49.3 overs. Eventually, Mohammad Nawaz’s boundary and Naseem Shah’s calm single sealed the win for the hosts.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi, Donovan Ferreira, and Corbin Bosch picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock sparkled with a half-century on his ODI return before Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah’s three-wickets folded South Africa on 263 in 49.1 overs.

Quinton de Kock and Lhuan-dre Pretorius provided a solid opening start with a 97-run stand in just 15.6 overs. The pair batted beautifully on a good-looking surface.

Pretorius, particularly, took pacers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to cleaners with a flurry of boundaries. As a result, the visitors were 62 at the end of the power play.

The stand eventually culminated with Pretorius’ wicket, who perished in the 15th over after making 57 from 60 balls. He struck seven fours and a six in his brisk knock.

Despite the wicket, the Proteas batted at a brisk rate, with De Kock bringing his half-century off 48 balls. He added 43 for the second wicket with Tony de Zorzi as the scorecard read 141 in 24.4 overs.

The Proteas were cruising; however, the home side made a roaring comeback with the quick wickets of De Kock (63 off 71 balls) and Tony De Zordi (18 off 20). Naseem castled the former, whereas the latter was caught and bowled off Saim’s bowling.

As a result, South Africa were reduced to 147-3 before a 44-run stand between skipper Matthew Breetzke and debutant Sinethemba Qeshile took them near the 200-run mark.

Breetzke scored 47 from 54 with the help of two boundaries, while Qeshile made 22 off 23 balls.

At this stage, the Proteas were eyeing a 300-run plus total; however, Abrar Ahmed sparked a collapse and left them reeling on 228-8 in 43.2 overs.

But it was Corbin Bosch 41 from 40 balls laced with six fours that propelled them to over 250 runs before Naseem bundled out the visitors on the first ball of the last over.

For Pakistan, Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed shared six wickets each, whereas Saim Ayub scalped two wickets in his eight overs.

With this win, India became only the fourth nation in the 52-year history of the Women’s ODI World Cup to lift the prestigious title.

The first edition took place in 1973, where England defeated Australia to become the inaugural champions.

Since then, Australia have dominated the competition with seven titles, including a hat-trick of wins between 1978 and 1989, while England follow with four championships (1973, 1993, 2009, and 2017).

New Zealand, the 2001 champions, were the only other team to have won the tournament before India’s triumph.
