PSG edge Arsenal on penalties to retain Champions League title

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed back-to-back Champions League triumphs with a 4-3 shoot-out win over Arsenal following a 1-1 draw after extra time on Saturday in Budapest, with Eberechi Eze and Gabriel missing from the spot.

Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions showed great resilience to take the game beyond 120 minutes, but fell to a second final defeat, 20 years after their first in Paris against Barcelona.

Luis Enrique’s side became only the second, besides Real Madrid, to win the competition in consecutive years in the Champions League era.

PSG’s first triumph was 55 years in the making, 14 of those under Qatari ownership; the second could start what they hope is an era of dominance and dynasty-building.

Luis Enrique rebuilt the team swiftly and efficiently, removing the club’s superstars and building a cohesive and committed attacking side, capable of shredding opposition with terrifying pace.

It was the Spaniard’s third Champions League triumph, making him one of only five coaches to complete a hat-trick, the first coming with Barcelona in 2015.

For a while, it looked unlikely as Kai Havertz powered Arsenal ahead after six minutes, but Ousmane Dembele’s penalty midway through the second half took a tight game to extra time and ultimately penalties.

Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber was fit after a groin injury, but his rust from over two months out led Arteta to deploy Cristhian Mosquera out of position at right-back.

The coach also opted for Havertz in attack over Viktor Gyokeres, and for an hour, it seemed like his calls would pay off.

Luis Enrique selected 10 of the side which demolished Inter Milan 5-0 in last year’s final as PSG finally lifted the trophy they so badly craved.

In Arsenal’s only prior final, German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off in the opening stages as they were defeated by Barcelona in Paris in 2006.

They got off to a far better start at the Puskas Arena, with Lehmann’s compatriot Havertz firing the Gunners ahead after just six minutes.

Havertz, who scored the winning goal in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League final victory, could not believe his luck after Marquinhos’s attempted clearance hit Leandro Trossard and bounced into his path.

The forward galloped into open space behind PSG’s defence and towards Matvey Safonov’s goal. Havertz had a tight angle to overcome but rifled a strike into the roof of the net.

It was the worst possible start for PSG against a miserly Arsenal side who had conceded just six goals on the run to the final.

Their disciplined defending kept the Parisians at bay with consummate ease, as Luis Enrique’s side controlled the ball but could not break through Arsenal’s defensive bastion.

Gabriel Magalhaes made an excellent last-ditch challenge to pick Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s pocket. The dynamic Georgian has been the tournament’s best player, but in the first half was not allowed room to breathe.

The French champions appealed for a penalty when Bukayo Saka bungled an attempted clearance, and the ball hit both his arms, but referee Daniel Siebert was unmoved.

PSG were reduced to frustrated pot-shots from distance, and after the break, moved the ball more quickly to try and destabilise Arsenal’s rearguard.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya saved from Achraf Hakimi’s bouncing free-kick before Kvaratskhelia finally had his say. After the winger’s slick one-two with Dembele, Mosquera bundled him down in the box with a clumsy foul.

Dembele sent Raya the wrong way with a low penalty to level, with PSG fans igniting several flares in celebration. It was their 45th goal of the competition, matching the all-time record.

PSG almost set a new one when Kvaratskhelia hurtled down the left, but teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly deflected his shot against the post.

Substitute Bradley Barcola fired a fine chance wide on the break before extra time, as the French side threatened frequently, a tiring Arsenal suddenly giving them too much space.

The Gunners pleaded for a penalty of their own when substitute Noni Madueke went down under pressure from Nuno Mendes, but it would have been harsh on the PSG defender whom the winger was pulling.

To a shoot-out it went, with PSG confident after already claiming three trophies on penalties this season, and winning their last five. They also took the first spot kick, and at the end, in front of their own supporters.

Arsenal blinked first, with Ebereche Eze firing wide, but Raya then saved from PSG’s Mendes. Declan Rice drilled home to level at 2-2.

After Lucas Beraldo put the Ligue 1 winners 4-3 up, Arsenal defender Gabriel was left with the fifth kick for his side and lashed it high over the crossbar to hand PSG the trophy.

Shaheen Afridi breaks silence on Mohammad Rizwan’s ODI future

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has dismissed suggestions that Mohammad Rizwan’s exclusion from the squad for the Australia series signals the end of the wicketkeeper-batter’s career in the format.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia, Shaheen backed the former captain and insisted that being left out of one squad should not be viewed as the end of a player’s international journey.

Rizwan was notably omitted from Pakistan’s squad for the home series, sparking widespread debate about his future in ODI cricket.

The development came amid reports suggesting that white-ball head coach Mike Hesson is looking towards a younger core as part of preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

However, Shaheen stressed that several senior players, including himself and Babar Azam, had experienced setbacks during their careers before returning to the national side.

“Just because Mohammad Rizwan is not part of this series does not mean his career is over. I was dropped once and came back. Babar was also out of the side and has returned,” Shaheen told reporters.

The left-arm pacer explained that the decision was aimed at expanding Pakistan’s options and giving emerging players an opportunity to stake their claim in the ODI setup.

“You have to give opportunities to other players as well. Rohail [Nazir] and Ghazi [Ghouri] are both talented cricketers, and if you want to prepare properly for a World Cup, then different players need to be tested,” he said.

Shaheen Afridi further maintained that continued performances and hard work remain the key factors in earning a return to the national side.

“No player’s career can be finished by you or by me. If someone is working hard and performing, then Allah will reward him with more opportunities,” he added.

Pakistan have included Rohail Nazir and Muhammad Ghazi Ghori as their specialist wicketkeeping options for the Australia series, with the team management looking to assess alternatives ahead of the next ODI World Cup cycle.

Rizwan’s omission comes after a disappointing ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year, where he managed just 54 runs in three innings at an average of 19.33.

Despite the recent struggles, the experienced wicketkeeper remains one of Pakistan’s most accomplished ODI performers. Since making his debut in the format, Rizwan has scored 2979 runs in 94 ODI innings at an average of 40.80, including four centuries and 19 half-centuries.

In a video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on social media, several members of the national side extended their wishes to supporters and encouraged people to celebrate the occasion with kindness and care for others.

Among the players featured in the video were ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha, all-rounder Shadab Khan, fast bowler Haris Rauf, young batter Shamyl Hussain, wicketkeeper Rohail Nazir, spinner Sufiyan Muqeem and middle-order batter Abdul Samad.

“On behalf of myself and the Pakistan team, I wish everyone a very happy Eid,” Babar Azam said in the message.

Australia suffer injury blow ahead of Pakistan ODIs

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan because of an ankle injury, Cricket Australia confirmed on Tuesday.

Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been named captain in his absence, read the statement released by CA.

The setback comes as Australia prepare for the three-match Pakistan vs Australia ODI series, scheduled from May 30 to June 4, with matches to be played in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

Marsh, who recently missed the final game of the Indian Premier League season for Lucknow Super Giants, will remain in Perth for treatment and further medical assessment on his injured ankle.

Cricket Australia said a decision regarding Marsh’s availability for Australia’s upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh would be taken later after medical evaluations.

The absence of the experienced all-rounder is a significant blow for Australia ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan, particularly with the side continuing preparations for future ICC white-ball tournaments.

In Marsh’s absence, Inglis will captain Australia for the first time in an ODI series against Pakistan. The wicketkeeper-batter has emerged as one of Australia’s most reliable white-ball players in recent years and is expected to lead a relatively fresh-looking squad during the tour.

Australia are also expected to hand an international debut to emerging fast bowler Ollie Peake as the visitors reshuffle their bowling resources ahead of the Pakistan ODIs.

The ODI series marks Australia’s return to Pakistan for a bilateral 50-over tour for the first time since March-April 2022, when Pakistan secured a memorable 2-1 series victory on home soil.

Lamine Yamal named in Spain squad for FIFA World Cup 2026

Lamine Yamal has been named in the Spain squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, announced by coach Luis de la Fuente on Monday, which also included Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino after his recent return from injury.

For the first time at a World Cup, the Spain squad will not feature a Real Madrid player, with Dean Huijsen dropped and veteran Dani Carvajal also excluded after struggling through an injury-hit campaign.

Merino, a favourite of coach De la Fuente, appeared as a substitute for the Gunners against Crystal Palace on Sunday in their final Premier League match, for his first appearance since January after a foot fracture.

De La Fuente also called up defenders Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill after impressive seasons with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, respectively, deciding to leave out Huijsen and Atletico’s Robin Le Normand.

Along with teenager Barca star Yamal, Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams played a key role as Spain won Euro 2024, and he is in the squad despite a season badly disrupted by fitness issues.

Yamal, 18, is a doubt for the first matches of the tournament after suffering a hamstring injury with Barcelona, which has kept him out since late April.

Pakistan-born Hamza Khan hits second-highest T20I score

GABORONE: Rwanda opener Hamza Khan scripted history after smashing the second-highest T20I score during the fourth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier.

The right-handed batter, originally from Peshawar, Pakistan, hammered an unbeaten 164 off just 65 balls at a staggering strike rate of 252.30. His knock also included 15 sixes and nine fours.

With the innings, he moved to second on the all-time list of highest individual scores in Men’s T20Is, behind only former Australia captain Aaron Finch.
