South Africa’s explosive middle-order batter and wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old made the announcement via Instagram, calling it a “sad day” as he steps away from the international game.

“It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket,” Klaasen wrote.

“It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with.

“From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country, and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy.

“My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me – to them I will always be grateful.

“To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career.

“I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so.

Klaasen made his international debut in 2018 during an ODI series against India and went on to represent South Africa in all three formats — four Tests, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is over a seven-year career.

ODIs proved to be his strongest format, where he amassed 2,141 runs at an impressive average of 43.69 and a blazing strike rate of 117.05. His record includes four centuries and 11 half-centuries.

Among his standout performances was the unforgettable 174 off just 83 balls against Australia at Centurion in 2023 — the highest individual score by any batter at No. 5 in ODI history.

In T20Is, Heinrich Klaasen scored 1,000 runs at a strike rate of 141.84 and an average of 23.25, often providing quick runs in the middle order.

Arshad Nadeem wins gold at Asian Athletics Championship with 86.40m throw

Pakistan’s superstar Arshad Nadeem has once again made the nation proud, this time clinching the gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championship with a stunning throw of 86.40 meters in the men’s javelin throw final at Gumi, South Korea, on Wednesday.

Competing internationally for the first time since last year’s Paris Olympics, where he famously won Pakistan’s first-ever singles gold, all eyes were on Nadeem as he returned to the big stage. And once again, he delivered.

With ‘Dil Dil Pakistan’ echoing through the stadium, Arshad launched his javelin deep into the Gumi sky on his final (sixth) attempt, surpassing his own previous best of 85.57m set earlier in the competition.

The Olympic champion started off with throws of 75.64m and 76.80m in his first two attempts, gradually building momentum before hitting his peak in the final round.

He had already made headlines a day earlier during the qualification round, recording a jaw-dropping 86.34m throw on his first and only attempt, sending a strong message to his rivals ahead of the final.

Nadeem’s golden throw not only secured top spot on the podium but also reaffirmed his place among the continent’s elite javelin throwers.

Chairman South Asian Athletics Association, Major General (R) Muhammad Akram Sahi, congratulated Arshad Nadeem on his sensational achievement.

President of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan, Brigadier (R) Wajahat Hussain Sahi, also extended his greetings to the nation on Arshad’s win, calling it a moment of pride for every Pakistani.

Meanwhile, Secretary Colonel (R) Shah Jehan and other federation officials also hailed the champion’s efforts and lauded his commitment to excellence.

Hasan Ali sets sights on Winning World Cup for Pakistan

Fast bowler Hasan Ali has declared his goal to help the Pakistan cricket team succeed in next year’s ICC T20 World Cup.

Hasan made a comeback to the national side against Bangladesh in the three-match T20I series opener. He returned with a bang, taking a five-wicket haul in a resounding win for the Green Shirts.

The pacer who last donned Pakistan’s T20I colours in May 2024 against Ireland did not look rusty in the opening game.

During the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) podcast, Hasan shed light on the challenging aspects of his rehab and the technical elements of his bowling.

He also aimed to win a World Cup for Pakistan, set to be played next year in Sri Lanka.

“If you ask me, I want to play for Pakistan in the World Cup and win it for my country. For me, every match is now an opportunity, and I will give my 110 percent. Performance will come and go, but effort matters most for me,” he said.

The 29-year-old expressed joy at his return to the national side, revealing the challenging time he had during his rehab.

“After injury, the comeback is never easy. I am humbled and blessed to have gotten fit courtesy of the hard work that is now paying me back, Hasan said.

“Coming back into the team is nothing more than a dream come true again. I am feeling very excited and looking forward to it,” he added.

Hasan Ali emphasized the hard work, stating, “Rehab is the toughest thing for an athlete because you have to repeat the same exercise for months.

There was a lot of sacrifice, hunger, hard work, and passion,” the Gujranwala-born pacer added.

Hasan also highlighted the technical aspects of his bowling, noting that he had made several changes.

“Technically, there are lots of things that I have improved in my bowling. One thing I faced most was collapsing on the bowling crease. For two years, it felt like I was sitting and bowling.

“I was never a brace-leg bowler, but my front leg started to give way. Firstly, it was bending, and then it started to collapse. Due to this reason, my pace got reduced, and I remember that I was bowling at 128,130 kmph speed in the Australia series,” he recalled.

The third-highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 added that he had worked on his momentum and balance along with his new ball skills.

“So I have adjusted it. I have corrected my momentum and balance on the crease. Additionally, I have worked on my new ball and some of the basic things,” he concluded.

Hasan bags five as Pakistan thump Bangladesh in T20I series opener

LAHORE: Salman Ali Agha’s half-century, followed by Hasan Ali’s five-wicket haul, as Pakistan sealed a resounding 37-run victory over Bangladesh in the first T20I here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a daunting target of 202 runs, Bangladesh’s batting line faltered and were bundled out for 164 in 19.2 overs.

In pursuit of the target, Bangladesh had a similar start to Pakistan as they lost two wickets in four overs. Parvez Hossain Emon (4 off two balls) was removed only in the second over, while Tanzid Hasan fell in the fourth over.

Tanzid’s brisk 31 off 17 ended, courtesy of Hasan Ali’s good bowling.

Following the early hiccups, skipper Litton Das came to the fore, forging a steady stand with Towid Hridoy for the third wicket. The rapid partnership helped visitors reach the 100-run mark in just 12 overs.

The duo’s batting kept Bangladesh afloat, not before Liton’s removal, who was caught by Fakhar Zaman. He top-scored with 48 off 30 deliveries, striking at 160 with the help of three sixes and a four.

Litton Das’s wicket triggered a collapse that Bangladesh could not recover from. Khushdil Shah ended Hridoy’s sluggish 22-ball 17 while Agha Salman ended Shamim Hossain’s (4) innings.

Bangladesh were eventually reduced to 108-5 in 13.1 overs. With required run-rate creeping, Pakistan sensed a comfortable victory until Jaker Ali’s cameo.

He was removed in the 18th over after a quick-fire 36. He faced 20 balls in which he struck three sixes and a four, but it was not enough while chasing an above-par target.

Following his removal, the visitor’s innings was eventually folded in the 20th over.

Hasan Ali, on his return to the national side, starred with a five-wicket haul while Shadab Khan bagged two wickets.

For his all-round performance, Shadab Khan was named the ‘Player of the Match’.

Earlier, after opting to bat, Skipper Salman Ali Agha’s half-century and Shadab Khan’s blitz powered Pakistan to a 201-run total for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs.

Pakistan had a poor start to their innings as their dynamic opening duo, Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman, fell cheaply in the opening overs.

Saim was the first to go without scoring while Fakhar fell on the score of one in the second over, leaving Pakistan two for five.

However, skipper Agha Salman led from the front, stitching a 48-run stand with Mohammad Haris to steady the Green Shirts.

Haris was going well until his dismissal after scoring 31 off 18 deliveries, with the help of four boundaries and a six. Pakistan was eventually reduced to 53 in 6.3 overs.

Meanwhile, Agha remained steady, crafting another stand with Hasan Nawaz. Both batters scored briskly in a 65-run partnership, bringing the score to 118 in 12 overs.

The skipper’s wicket halted Pakistan’s momentum as he was removed just after his half-century. Agha Salman top-scored with 56 off 34 deliveries, striking eight fours and a six.

Shadab Khan joined Hasan Nawaz, who was dismissed after scoring 44 off 22 deliveries, featuring two fours and four sixes. One wicket followed another as the incoming batter Khushdil Shah (5 off 10 balls) short stay came to an end. followed him.

At this stage, Pakistan was 150-6 in 16.1 overs with vice-captain Shadab Khan at one end. With wickets in quick succession, Shadab Khan struck a crucial 48-run knock, helping Pakistan score above 200.

He was removed on the last ball of the penultimate over. Shadab struck five fours and two sixes in his brisk knock.

For Bangladesh, Shoriful Islam was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets, while Mahedi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rishad Hossain, and Shamim Hossain claimed one scalp apiece.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Agha Salman hailed Sufiyan Muqeem, calling him the future of white-balls cricket for the Pakistan team.

“I personally like Sufyan a lot, and in the upcoming series, he will feature in our shorter formats squads. I think Sufyan will play a crucial role in the white-ball format, and he will win a lot of matches for Pakistan in the future.

Kusal, Raza power Lahore Qalandars to dramatic last-over PSL 10 triumph

LAHORE: Kusal Perera’s sublime knock and Sikandar Raza’s heroics sealed a dramatic last-over victory for Lahore Qalandars against Quetta Gladiators, securing the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 title here under lights at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing an imposing target of 202, Lahore Qalandars hit the winning runs on the second ball of the penultimate over, losing only four wickets in the process.

Lahore Qalandars had a contrasting start to the Gladiators, racing to 39 in 3.2 overs while losing Fakhar Zaman.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Naeem paired with in-form Abdullah Shafique, steering the home team with a 46-run partnership in a mammoth chase.

Naeem led the charge with a brisk 46 off 27, laced with six towering sixes and a four before getting dismissed in the ninth over.

Qalandars were 85-2 when Kusal Perera joined Abdullah, who stitched a brief stand with him.

Abdullah Shafique departed after scoring 41 off 28 balls, with the scoreboard showing 115/4 in 12.3 overs.

With the required rate mounting, Kusal Perera and Bhanuka Rajapaksa then joined hands for a 30-run stand, taking the Qalandars to 145 in 16.3 overs.

Rajapaksa fell to Mohammad Amir after scoring 14 off 16 balls, bringing Sikandar Raza to the crease to join Perera.

The two shared an unbeaten, match-winning 59-run stand to guide Lahore Qalandars to their third PSL title.

For Quetta Gladiators, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Amir, Abrar Ahmed, and Usman Tariq claimed one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Hasan Nawaz’s sublime knock and Faheem’s late blitz propelled Quetta Gladiators to an impressive total against Lahore Qalandars in the final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Opting to bat first, Quetta Gladiators posted 201 for the loss of nine wickets in their 20 overs.

The Gladiators started poorly as they lost their openers only in the third over, leaving Quetta 21-2. Shaheen Afridi and Salman Mirza dismissed Saud Shakeel (4 off 6) and Finn Allen (12 off 11) respectively.

Following the early hiccups, Hasan Nawaz and Rilee Rossouw partnered to steady the Gladiators’ innings. The duo stitched a 37-run partnership, bringing the total to 58 before Rossouw’s wicket.

The southpaw’s brisk 22 off 11 ended with Shaheen Afridi’s brilliant catch at extra cover. His innings featured four boundaries and a six.

Lahore Qalandars did well with early wickets, but it was Hasan Nawaz and Avishka Fernando’s 67-run partnership that laid the foundation for a strong total.

Hasan was the core aggressor while Avishka played second fiddle. The duo dismantled Lahore Qalandars’ spin attack, keeping a run-rate of 10 per over.

Hasan Nawaz, particularly, took Rishad Hossain to the cleaners, reaching a half century in the process. He accumulated 16 runs of this over to take Quetta to the 100-run mark at the halfway stage of the innings.

With the partnership growing, things looked ominous for the Qalandars, as their fielders were colliding and at risk of injuries. The stand was finally broken with Avishka Fernando’s wicket in the 14th over as the score read 126.

He was caught after scoring 29 off 22 balls, with the help of five fours. Meanwhile, the wicket did not stem the flow of runs as incoming batter Dinesh Chandimal and Hasan Nawaz’s brief stand took them to 155 at the end of the 16th over.

The Gladiators were well set for a formidable total before Shaheen Afridi’s 18th over halted their momentum. The left-arm pacer struck twice, removing both well-set batters.

Chandimal (22 off 13, two sixes) was the first to go, while Hasan was caught off the fifth ball of the over after an enterprising 76 off 43 deliveries. The right-hander’s innings was peppered with eight fours and four sixes.

With these breakthroughs, Lahore made a strong comeback, not before Faheem Ashraf’s blitz in the last over.

The all-rounder smashed 23 in the penultimate over, taking the total over 200. He was eventually removed after scoring 28 off 8 balls, striking at 350 with the aid of two fours and three towering sixes.

For Lahore Qalandars, Shaheen Afridi remained a stand-out bowler, picking up three for 24 in his four overs, while Salman Mirza and Haris Rauf bagged two apiece, though they went for plenty of runs.
