BCCI denies reports of withdrawing from Asia Cup 2025

The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devajit Saikia, has refuted reports claiming that the board is set to withdraw from the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup.

Saikia’s remarks came hours after several Indian media outlets reported that the BCCI had formally communicated to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), expressing its unwillingness to participate in the upcoming events due to recent tensions with Pakistan.

Speaking to news agency ANI, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that no such decision has been taken, and the board has not even held discussions regarding any withdrawal from ACC events.

“Since this morning, it has come to our notice that some news reports have stated that the BCCI has decided not to participate in the Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup,” he stated.

“Such news is devoid of any truth. BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding the ensuing ACC events, let alone writing anything to the ACC.”

The reports cited “recent tensions” and quoted a senior BCCI official, who claimed that the Indian team “can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC, whose chief is a Pakistani minister”—referring to Pakistan’s Interior Minister and current PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the ACC President.

The official was also quoted as saying that BCCI had “verbally communicated” its withdrawal from the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, slated to be held in Sri Lanka next month, and that all future participation in ACC events was on hold pending directions from the Indian government.

It’s worth noting that the Asia Cup 2025 is slated to be held in India later this year. However, Pakistan will play their games at a neutral venue.

For the unversed, the Asia Cup 2023 was played under a hybrid model, with matches split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, allowing India to avoid travelling across the border.

PSL 10: Lahore Qalandars secure playoff spot as Peshawar Zalmi crash out

RAWALPINDI: Fakhar Zaman’s explosive knock, followed by Salman Mirza’s four-wicket haul, steered Lahore Qalandars to an emphatic win over Peshwar Zalmi in the rain-shortened encounter of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a daunting 150-run target, Peshawar Zalmi crumbled under pressure and could only score 123 for the loss of eight wickets in a match reduced to 13 overs per side with revised playing conditions.

The defeat ended Peshawar Zalmi’s journey in PSL 10, as they failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Peshawar Zalmi displayed a shambolic batting display in pursuit of a big total as the scorecard read 42-4 in 5.3 overs. Salman Mirza dismantled the Zalmi top-order with a fiery spell.

Saim Ayub was hit wicket in the second over after scoring eight runs off seven balls. Soon after, Mohammad Haris and Max Bryant were removed on successive deliveries.

Captain Babar Azam, who scored only 16 runs, struggled as he was caught out by Abdullah Shafique from a delivery by Sikandar Raza, significantly hurting Peshawar Zalmi’s chances of staying in the tournament.

Maaz Sadaqat (4), Abdul Samad (17), and Luke Wood (0) were dismissed in quick succession, leaving Zalmi at a challenging 63-7.

The tailenders put up some resistance, with Daniel Sams contributing 26 runs and Ahmed Daniyal adding 24 runs, but ultimately, it was too little, too late for Peshawar Zalmi.

They eventually managed to score 123-8, falling 26 runs short.

For Lahore Qalandars, Salman Mirza picked up for wickets for 31 runs in three overs. Captain Shaheen Afridi grabbed two wickets for 19 runs in his two overs.

Earlier, Lahore Qalandars posted 149 for the loss of eight wickets in a match reduced to 13 overs per side with revised playing conditions.

The Qalandars came out firing on all cylinders, smashing 49 in the first three overs. Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Naeem led the onslaught, smashing 10, 21 and 18 runs respectively.

Naeem was eventually dismissed in the fourth over after scoring 22 off 10 balls, striking three fours and a six. The wicket, however, did not stem the flow of runs as Qalandars continued to pile on the misery.

Lahore Qalandars were cruising at 80 in 5.5 overs before Ali Raza dismissed Abdullah Shafique, who perished on 4 runs. Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman reached a half-century in the process.

Kusal Perera joined Fakhar and forged a brief stand before getting dismissed after scoring 17 off 8 balls.  Lahore Qalandars couldn’t capitalise on the brisk start as Peshawar Zalmi returned strongly, reducing Qalandars to 149-8 in 13 overs.

PSL 10: Quetta Gladiators seal top spot with last-ball win over Multan Sultans

RAWALPINDI: Hasan Nawaz’s heroics and Khawaja Nafay’s blazing half-century propelled Quetta Gladiators to a narrow win over Multan Sultans in the 28th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a challenging 186-run target, Quetta Gladiators secured a thrilling two-wicket win on the last ball of the penultimate over to secure top spot on the PSL 10 points table.

Gladiators started the chase rapidly as Khawaja Nafay and skipper Saud Shakeel put on a blazing 77-run stand in 7.5 overs.

Nafay, in only his second match of the season, set the tone with 12 runs off Dilshan Madushanka’s third over. On the other hand, Saud Shakeel played second fiddle, rotating the strike to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Quetta Gladiators were 60-0 at the end of the powerplay, thanks to a 12-run fifth over of Ubaid Shah’s bowling. The onslaught continued as Nafay reached his half-century in the eighth over but was eventually dismissed for 51 runs off 26 balls, which included five fours and four sixes.

Quetta Gladiators were steady in the chase at this stage, with 78-1 at the end of the eighth over. However, things started turning for Multan Sultans as they struck on regular intervals.

Saud Shakeel was dismissed in the ninth after scoring 18 off 24 balls. Multan Sultans returned strongly with another wicket in the 10th as Shahid Aziz dismissed Avishka Fernando.

However, Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal arrived at the crease and smoked 17 runs off Mohammad Hasnain’s 11th over, bringing the score to 107-3. The Gladiators were once again looking steady in the chase amid a brief 29-run partnership between Chandimal and Hasan Nawaz.

Chandimal was removed after scoring 17 off 10 balls with the help of two fours and a six. Soon after, Danish Aziz followed him with a five-ball duck as Multan Sultans sensed a victory as the scorecard read 123-5 in 13.5 overs.

Despite wickets tumbling around, Hasan Nawaz forged brief partnerships with the lower order, eventually taking Quetta Gladiators to 161-7 in 17.3 overs. Faheem Ashraf scored 16 runs, while Mohammad Wasim managed only one before getting out in the same over.

Nevertheless, Hasan Nawaz remained resilient during the chase. He hit a six on the last ball, leading his team to victory in a tense finish, as Quetta scored 11 runs in the last over.

He scored an eye-catching 67* off 38 balls with the help of six towering sixes and two fours, which earned him the Player of the Match award.

For Multan Sultans, Shahid Aziz was the standout bowler, taking three for 29 in his four overs.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Multan Sultans posted 185 on the loss of seven wickets in their allocated 20 overs.

The Sultans were jolted with an early blow in the second over as skipper Mohammad Rizwan was clean bowled by Faheem Ashraf, leaving the side at 12/1 after 1.2 overs.

However, Yasir Khan held firm after setting the tone with consecutive boundaries in the first over.

Yasir partnered with Jahanzeib Sultan to establish an aggressive 52-run partnership for the second wicket. Both players attacked the Gladiators’ bowling, consistently hitting boundaries and keeping the scoring rate high.

The partnership came to an end when Jahanzeib was out for 25 runs off 21 balls, dismissed by Usman Tariq, leaving Multan at 64/2 in 6.5 overs.

Yasir continued to lead the innings with a dynamic approach, eyeing a half-century, but he was soon dismissed for 45 runs off 25 balls. At this stage, Multan found themselves at 79/3 after nine overs.

Tayyab Tahir and Humayon Altaf then took charge, forging a 41-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Their partnership ended when Khurram Shahzad dismissed Altaf for 16 runs off 13 balls, reducing Sultans to 120/4 in 13.2 overs.

Tayyab, in good form, fell in the 15th over after scoring 36 runs off 24 balls, leaving Multan at 136/5. As the innings progressed, the Sultans lost more wickets, with Abrar Ahmed removing Peter Hatzoglou for just one run.

Despite this, Aamer Azmat made a significant impact in the final overs, hitting a huge six off Khurram Shahzad to help the team surpass 150 runs in the 18th over.

Aamer Azmat remained not out on 21 runs off 16 balls, while Mohammad Hasnain hit a boundary in the last over to wrap up the innings.

Usman Tariq was the standout bowler for Quetta Gladiators, achieving impressive figures of 3 wickets for 32 runs in his four overs.

Karachi Kings edge past Peshawar Zalmi to qualify for PSL 10 playoffs

RAWALPINDI: David Warner and James Vince powered Karachi Kings to defeat Peshawar Zalmi and qualify for the playoffs of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 here at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a mammoth 238-run target, Peshawar Zalmi put up a spirited fight but eventually fell short, managing 214/5 in their 20 overs to hand Karachi Kings a convincing victory.

Zalmi’s chase began with promise as Mohammad Haris and Saim Ayub stitched a quickfire 30-run opening stand. But the momentum was dented early when Haris departed for 9 in the third over.

Ayub, however, carried on confidently and found a reliable partner in skipper Babar Azam.

The left-hander added 77 runs with Babar for the second wicket before falling to Abbas Afridi in the 11th over. Ayub scored a fluent 47 off 31, peppered with five boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Babar then took charge, playing the anchor as wickets continued to tumble around him. He stitched brief partnerships with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Max Bryant, but Zalmi’s hopes of a successful chase rested firmly on his shoulders.

Just as Babar inched closer to a well-earned century, his innings met a cruel end, a run out on 94 off 49 balls, featuring 10 fours and 4 sixes.

His dismissal in the 18th over left Zalmi needing 55 runs off the final 13 deliveries, with too much left for the lower order to chase down.

Maaz Sadaqat (19)* and Hussain Talat (12)* fought till the end but could only add 30 runs together, as Zalmi eventually finished 23 runs shy of the target.

Among the bowlers, Abbas Afridi led the charge for the Kings with 2/48 in his four overs. Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza chipped in with one wicket each.

Earlier, Karachi Kings posted a massive 237/4 in their allotted 20 overs after being invited to bat first by Peshawar Zalmi, thanks to a record second-wicket stand between David Warner and James Vince.

The innings couldn’t have started on a more dramatic note, with Luke Wood striking gold on the very first delivery, dismantling debutant Ben McDermott for a golden duck.

But the early breakthrough only paved the way for fireworks.

David Warner, joined by Vince at the crease, staged a sensational recovery for Karachi Kings.

The duo stitched together a 162-run partnership for the second wicket, combining power with precision and turning the momentum firmly in the Kings’ favour.

Vince was the first to depart, falling to Ali Raza in the 15th over after a fine 42-ball 72, laced with 11 boundaries and a six.

The very next over, Zalmi found another opening when Wood removed the dangerous Muhammad Irfan Khan for just two.

Warner, having anchored the innings brilliantly, finally perished for a commanding 86 off 50 balls, caught at deep mid-wicket off Arif Yaqoob in the 17th over.

His knock featured 11 fours and 2 sixes, providing the perfect platform for the lower order to explode. That’s exactly what Khushdil Shah and Mohammad Nabi did.

The all-round duo smashed an unbeaten 70-run stand in the final overs to push the total well beyond the 230 mark.

Khushdil was the chief aggressor, hammering 43 off just 15 balls*, while Nabi chipped in with a handy 26 off 10*.

With the ball, Luke Wood stood out for Peshawar Zalmi, returning excellent figures of 2/19 in four overs. Arif Yaqoob and Ali Raza chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Mike Hesson wants ‘match winners’ Babar-Rizwan back in Pakistan T20I team: reports

Pakistan’s newly appointed head coach, Mike Hesson, is reportedly pushing for the return of star batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan into the national T20I team.

Reports suggest that the head coach considers both batters key to the team’s preparations for the 2025 ACC Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

Both senior players were previously dropped for the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year, a move by the selection committee aimed at giving younger players international exposure.

Rizwan, after leading the side in just two series, was also relieved of T20I captaincy duties, with Salman Ali Agha stepping in as the new skipper.

However, Hesson appears keen on bringing back experience into the dressing room, albeit with a fresh approach.

Reliable sources confirm that the former New Zealand coach recently held a strategic meeting with selector Aqib Javed at the PCB headquarters, where player roles and team composition were thoroughly discussed.

Insiders close to the development reveal that Hesson still views Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as “match-winners” but wants the duo to evolve their game, particularly by improving their strike rates and adopting a more aggressive mindset in the shortest format.

While the upcoming five-match T20I series against Bangladesh, scheduled in Faisalabad and Lahore later this month, may still be used to test new faces, the long-term blueprint seems to include a blend of youth and proven performers.

Babar Azam vows strong comeback amid batting struggles

Pakistan’s ace batter Babar Azam opened up about his batting struggles, aiming to make a strong comeback.

While speaking on Peshawar Zalmi’s YouTube channel, Babar acknowledged that every player goes through challenging phases in their career and emphasised the importance of focusing on regaining his form.

He also admitted that he has gone through difficult times before, but this time the bad patch has lasted a bit longer.

“Every player experiences such times, and this time it’s a bit longer. My effort is to get my form back,” he said.

Babar Azam also highlighted the importance of keeping things simple, highlighting a relaxed mindset.

“In these times, you have to keep things simple around you and you have to believe in yourself, because in these scenarios there are a lot of things that surround you.

During this time, the more you keep yourself normal and simple, the easier things get because you confuse yourself if you do overdo things,” Babar explained.

The right-handed batter expressed gratitude for the strong support from fans, while also recognising the pressure that comes with it.

“Fans provide a lot of support, and with that comes pressure. My aim is always to perform well,” he said.

”I firmly believe that I will live up to fans’ expectations,” he concluded.

Babar, who is currently leading Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, has struggled to score runs recently.

He has managed to score 178 runs in eight innings, at an average of 29.66, with the help of two half-centuries in PSL 10.

For context, Babar Azam has not scored a century in international cricket since the 2023 Asia Cup opening match against Nepal.

It is pertinent to mention that the tournament, which was briefly suspended last week due to rising cross-border tensions with India, is all set to resume on May 17 with Karachi Kings facing Peshawar Zalmi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Peshawar Zalmi are in a precarious position as they have won four out of eight games played, and they have to win both of their remaining fixtures to ensure qualification for the tournament’s Playoffs.
